Understanding that words are made of letters and connecting sounds is a foundational skill called the alphabetic principle. Alphabet Garden includes over 100 lessons that expose and introduce early learners to capital letters, lowercase letters, and the sounds they make. These lessons invite students to recognize the letters in isolation and in context, practice letter formation, and associate a sound with them to support foundational early literacy development through engaging and multisensory activities.

Best Practices

Gradual Release: Introduce new lessons as a whole group to model how to complete the activity. Practice the gradual release method as students begin to gain confidence and independence.

Fine Motor Skills: Enhance letter formation practice by incorporating activities that strengthen fine motor skills such as tracing, cutting, or using manipulatives.

Sharing: Allow students to share their ideas with others around them. As students make connections to letters encourage opportunities to discuss what they notice or have discovered about each letter.
