Age goes from 1st July - 30th June. Children in the class may be various ages. In Foundation they start off 4 and 5 in January and end up 5 and 6 in December.

Education is under provincial jurisdiction. The above grade levels are used by many provinces, but Quebec is different. Kindergarten is optional, and is often a 1/2 day program. All children have the right to attend school beginning in September of the year they turn six. Children are required to attend school when they reach compulsory school age, which is seven years of age. Most schools provide kindergarten.
