WELCOME BY THE GOVERNMENT & REGION OF ATTICA Harry Theoharis

Lefteris Avgenakis

George Patoulis

Minister of Tourism

Deputy Minister of Culture & Sports

Governor of Attica Region

Athens welcomes, both athletes and visitors, in Athens for the 37th «Athens Marathon. The Authentic». This year’s event surpasses any competition so far with more than 60,000 athletes and citizens, who are eager and excited to experience the original classic course. This is a boost to the local tourism and a nomination as a leading sporting and cultural event, highlighting the modern trend towards sports tourism. The priority of the Government and the Ministry of Tourism is to highlight our cultural heritage and the Authentic Marathon is inextricably linked to the history of Athens and its contribution to world culture. It is a global symbol and perhaps the most widespread international sporting event since the Olympics. Such kind of events incorporate our vision of how sport tourism can become an extremely pοwerful market for the economy and the development of the nation. Ι wish you the best of luck!

The revival of the Modern Olympic Games, 123 years ago, was crowned with the Marathon in its unique course, from Marathon to the Panathinaikon Stadium. Today, the yearly Race reaches its 37th edition and is one of the greatest and most difficult, globally. Test your endurance, run from antiquity until today! Welcome to the Run of History!

The «Athens Marathon. The Authentic» is a sporting event of significant historical and cultural value. I am very pleased that the Region of Attica cooperates with the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) on the conduct of such a great sporting event. Apart from forging the principle of fair play, the Authentic Marathon is an optimal way to highlight Attica. Indeed, tourism, in particular health and wellness tourism, may currently constitute a driving force for growth in Attica and in the country as a whole.

The Athens Marathon is an outstanding symbol of culture, fair play and strong will.

It is an honor for us, to once again host the start of the Authentic Marathon Run.

Above all, it is a symbol of effort. Many small and personal efforts in order each one of us to exceed his limits. Those small efforts that lead to the great one. To the effort of a whole society for evolution and progress.

The Authentic Marathon Run is not just a simple sports event.

The message of the Athens Marathon should not be limited in Panathenaic Stadium. It is constant, it is clear and It begins from Athens to be spreaded all over the world.

You are all invited to the events we are organizing prior to the 37th Authentic Marathon Run.

It exceeds all worldwide cultural and social limits and is a monumental institution for our Municipality.

ATTENTION: Runners who wish to continue running beyond the stated time limits, need to bear in mind that they are running at their own risk. Police will gradually allow vehicles on the streets after the last runner passes each feed station within the set time limit. ELECTRONIC TIMING All runners will receive a timing chip from the Registration Center at the ERGO Marathon EXPO (ΤaeKwonDo Indoor Hall at Palaio Faliro) along with their bib number. By using the chip, runners will be registered in the official results and will be informed about 29

their split times. Split timing zones are installed every 5 kilometres and at 21.1km. Any runner for whom no time is shown at the Start, the split timing zones and the Finish, will be disqualified. The timing chip along with the bib number indicate the athlete’s identity and starting block in the electronic system. Only athletes who: (a) participate in accordance to the rules; (b) are placed in the right starting block; ( c) have timing indications at the Start, all split timing zones and the Finish; and (d) complete the race within the time limit (8 hours) will have their final and split times appearing in the Official Results and get a participation certificate. RULES AND FAIR PLAY Observance of the rules and regulations set by the International Athletics Association Federations (IAAF), the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the Hellenic Athletics Federation

(SEGAS), is substantial for the safe and fair participation of all runners in this huge sport event. The ideas of fair play and noble competition characterize the Athens Marathon, therefore mutual understanding and support among participants are essential in promoting the Olympic and sports ideals. Everyone should respect his/her co-runners and try not to block their way and the flow of the race. In case of not following the above rules, the event’s judges as well as the AMA OC staff may exclude runners from the Final Results, after evaluating electronic and audio visual material. ATTENTION: The participation of athletes with race handcycles, race wheelchairs, skates, skateboard, bicycle or accompanied by an animal is not allowed in the Athens Marathon. Due to the particularities of the marathon course, the large number of participating athletes, the existing infrastructure and the event’s operations for the staging of ~13 different races on the same day (either in the city center of Athens or along the Marathon course), the AMA OC can ensure safety of runners only under the above mentioned terms and conditions.

POWER WALKING SPECIFIC RULES The same rules apply for participants in Power Walking race, with the following specifications: 1. Participants in Power Walking are placed in the last starting block, to start at 09:35’. Starting from a different block than the appointed one will result in the disqualification of the participant. 2. Time limit to conclude the race is set at 17:41’. 3. If a walker wishes to change the type of race, he/she needs to change his/ her bib number. This can only be done with the permission of the Organizing Committee at the event’s Registration Centre. The deadline for reporting such a change is Saturday November 9, 2019. 4. There will be no winners or specific results classification for the participants in Power Walking. ACCESS TO THE RACE ROUTE – MARATHON RACE ATTENDANCE All race routes will be free of vehicles. It is strictly prohibited for anyone (spectators, coaches, etc.) other than runners to move on all race lanes, in any type of vehicle. Parallel street lanes will also be free of traffic and dedicated to vehicles accredited to the AMA OC (ambulances, police vehicles, etc.). All spectators are kindly requested to

use public transportation (Metro and buses outside the race routes), as indicated in the maps. No escorting of runners in bicycles is allowed. The presence of accompanying persons in any of the street lanes, failure to demonstrate a valid accreditation pass or obstruction of runners or disobedience to the police orders will lead to their expulsion from the race route and disqualification of the athletes they escort. Starting this year, personal supporters (family members, friends, colleagues, etc.) of the runners will have the opportunity of cheering for them at the 31st kilometer of the course, known among marathoners as the famous “wall”, and then go back to Panathenaic Stadium to welcome their finish of this unique marathon. AVRA Natural Mineral Water, a long-time supporter of the Authentic Marathon, will initiate the “AVRA Wave”, a unique “encouragement wave” which will bring runners closer to their supporters, at the most demanding moment of their race, the 31st mark of the 42.195m authentic classic route. The initiative aims to create a “connecting link” between the toughest point of the runners’ gigantic effort and the magical moment of completing it inside the Panathenaic “Marble” Stadium. The “AVRA Wave” mini-buses will facilitate supporters, by transferring them, free of charge, every 33

MEDICAL ADVICE FOR SAFE AND PLEASANT PARTICIPATION IN THE RACES OF “ATHENS MARATHON. THE AUTHENTIC”

PART 3:

In order to enjoy the unique experience of participating in the Athens Marathon without putting yourself in danger, you should be healthy and in good physical condition on that day.

ATTENTION: If you have a medical problem that may cause a loss of senses (such as diabetes), please put a cross in front of your number and write the details of your disease and the medication you receive on the back side of your number.

NOTICE The Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) is very pleased with the annual increase of the number of participants in the “ATHENS MARATHON. THE AUTHENTIC”. Participation is open to all, even to people who suffer from serious medical conditions, provided that they have their doctor’s consent, especially for the Marathon Race. It is advised that you visit your doctor before participating in the event. Participants who have not prepared sufficiently for the race should also pay extra attention. All participants should have a cardio check-up before the race, which is very important for every participant. In any case, all responsibility for participating in the Athens Marathon is entirely on the participant. The following guidelines contribute to a better performance and a safer race.

ILLNESS AND TRAINING If you have the flu, a feverish cold or tummy bug, do not train/run until you have fully recovered. After that, start training gently and build up gradually. Do not attempt to catch up on lost mileage shortly after an illness or an injury – this may aggravate the damage or the illness. If you had the flu over the last month, please reconsider your participation in the Athens Marathon.

The Athens Marathon and the Hellenic Athletics Federation are acknowledging the contribution of BETABET that provides the necessary medical equipment to the Organizing Committee in order to ensure that the event is staged in the most safe way.

54

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you cannot easily run 15 miles one month before the Marathon, it is highly unlikely that you will manage to finish or enjoy the race that day. In this case, it would be wiser for you not to participate in the Marathon Race. Instead, you could participate in the 10km or 5km road race.

THE DAY BEFORE THE RACE

On the day before the race, avoid intense practice and try to get enough rest. Prepare the objects that you will use on

race day. Eat a light supper rich in carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc.). Do not forget to drink sufficient amount of water, especially if the next day is forecast to be a hot one.

THE DAY OF THE RACE

Get dressed appropriately, according to the weather forecast. Wear lightweight running shoes that you have used before and you are sure will not hurt your feet. Wear cloches and soaks that you have used and washed at least once before and they will not handicap your body movement in any case (rubbibg, tight or wide or heavy clothes, made by unsuitable materials).

ones (higher temperature, humidity or both). The pace, the intensity in which you choose to run the race is the most important issue concerning the management of your endurance and abilities. DURING THE RACE The more you press yourself to finish the race, the more important it becomes to get fluids and food regularly. Drink at regular intervals, trying not to overdo it.

Have a light breakfast a few hours before the race starts. Avoid eating anything that contains fat.

Drinking too little can lead to problems, as you need to replace some of the body water you lose as you sweat. Drinking too much can be very dangerous and lead to hyponatremia, fits and, in some cases, even death. Drink when you feel the need but do not gulp large amounts of fluids before, during and after the race.

Leave your home/hotel early enough to be in time at the start area or the pick-up spots designated by the Organizing Committee, in order to avoid getting stressed.

Every athlete has different needs according to his/her body build, running pace and, above all, the weather conditions, as all these factors have an impact on how much someone sweats.

Be sufficiently hydrated before the race. One glass of water (250ml) is enough to achieve this. You may drink water until 30’ before the race starts, if the day is forecast to be a hot one.

Faster runners (<3h 30mins) on a warm day may need as much as one litre of fluid per hour (2 pints). Slower runners should need less, particularly on a cool day, more than 500ml per hour shouldn’t be consumed.

Revise on time your race tactics from the beginning by slowing your pace if and when the weather conditions are unfriendly deflecting from the usual

Prefer fluids and food that you have already 55

used and tested before. You can trust the products provided to you at the feed stations, but if you want, you can carry your own supplies. Water stations are frequent along the course. You do not need to drink water at each one of them, just make sure you have a mouthful of water occasionally. Sports drinks can also be found at certain stations (see relevant section). Run slightly, especially if your level of preparation for the match you are attending is not satisfactory. Follow this advice and it is most likely to meet the requirements of the race without requiring medical assistance. Doctors and First Aid Volunteers will be along on the way and will be covering all the races in health terms, not just where there are power stations. If you leave the race, head to the nearest station where medical assistance is provided. Pay attention to these tips and follow them as a guide before and during the Marathon. AT THE FINISH After you finish the race, do not stand The Athens Marathon and the Hellenic Athletics Federation are acknowledging the contribution of SANTAIR that provides the necessary number of defibrillators to Medical Services in order to ensure that the event is staged in the most safe way.

still. Keep walking, especially if you feel dizzy, and drink to replace lost fluid. Go to the baggage area as soon as possible, collect your kit bag and change into warm, dry clothes. Then go to the meeting point area. Foil blankets will not stop you from becoming cold. Keep on drinking slowly and have something to eat. Some runners feel faint even one and a half hours after the end of the race, often because they do not get enough fluid and/or food. Keep in mind that you should not drink excessively. It is preferable to hydrate yourself gradually over the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours after the race. Eat something salty and space out your drinks. In this way you will not get hyponatremia and will replace the water, salt and glycogen that were lost during the race. If for any reason you feel unwell, dizzy or weak, please visit the first aid station located at the finish venue. Within the next few hours after your finish, if you are not handicapped by an injury, see about to move and take a walk for some time. This will help you to recover sooner after a great effort. Although it doesn’t turn away the reason of the body fatigue, a very gentle massage session made by an expert could give you a relief feeling and accelerate the recovery procedure.

ΑΜΑ MEDAL SERIES 2019 - 2026

2500+ years of History on a collection of eight medals

Based on the Greek roots of Marathon, the Hellenic Athletics Federation decided to depict the history of the sport on the medals of Athens Marathon, designed by KIZI Design Studio. Starting in 2019 and for 8 consecutive years, one side of the finishers’ medal will depict α different historic milestone of the Marathon’s long history. Famous artists have already committed to paint the best moments of the sport. In 2019, the «Battle of Marathon 490BC» has been depicted on the medal Athens Marathon, with the unique style of the famous Greek painter, Alekos Fassianos. In the following years, the legendary «Soldier-Messenger», the «Birth of Marathon 1896» and other turning points of Marathon’s evolution will be designed by different famous artists, such as Yannis Psichopedis, Kostas Varotsos and others. Each individual medal in the 8-piece collector’s series will be engraved with a single letter. Once the set has been completed in 2026, on Marathon’s 130th Anniversary, the letters on the eight individual medals will spell the world “Marathon”. 61

The Marathon Battle by Alekos Fassianos

Eleven thousand soldiers from Athens and Plataies died during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Under the leadership of the genius General Miltiades, they fought bravely against the gigantic army of over 100,000 Persians. The victory of the Greek army over the Persians prevented the Persian invasion into Europe, allowing in the following years (5th century B.C.) the growth of Democracy and the development of Arts and Culture in Greece, and mainly in Athens, setting the basis of the Western Civilization. This great important historical moment is inextricably linked to the legend of the soldier runner, who sacrificed his life carrying the victorious message from the battlefield of Marathon to the people of Athens. The 2019 Athens Marathon medal, the first of the new 8-medal series of the event, is dedicated to this glorious battle and is signed by Alekos Fassianos. He is globally known as one of the greatest contemporary Greek artists, whose work has been acknowledged from New York to Tokyo and exhibited in many major museums and galleries around the world. 63

AN «X-RAY» OF THE AUTHENTIC MARATHON COURSE A challenge for brave runners

The Authentic Marathon route is a challenging linear course. It could be divided into four main sections. The race starts in the town of Marathon. The first 3kms are slightly downhill so self-control is recommended. Then it is mostly flat until you reach the 10K mark in the middle of the Nea Makri municipality. The second part of eight kilometers, consists of uphills and downhills, alternatively, and should not be run aggressively. There is only one long downhill relief after kilometer 17. The third part of 13 kilometers is known for its challenging hills, while the most difficult spots are the hills at kilometers 20, 25, 28 and 31. The final part, the last 11 kilometers of the authentic course are mostly downhill but can become challenging due to fatigue. The steepest downhills are at kilometers 32 and 37. Everyone’s favorite long-lasting memory are the final 600m down Herodou Attikou street and the final turn into the crowded, unique in the world, Panathenaic “Marble” Stadium. 67

MARATHON RUNNERS ENCOURAGING ACTIVATION «AVRA Wave»: We Run Together

Within the framework of the Athens Marathon, 2019 is the launch year of a new support action for Marathon runners at the 31st mark of the 42.195m classic route, known among marathoners as the famous “wall”. AVRA Natural Mineral Water, a long-time supporter of the Authentic Marathon, initiated the «AVRA Wave», a unique «encouragement wave» which brings marathon runners closer to their supporters, at the toughest point of their race. There, the «AVRA Wave» will welcome supporters and encourage, along with them, the heroic efforts of the runners, with the passion and emotion families and friends can offer to their own people. The «AVRA Wave» mini-buses will be transferring marathon supporters, free of charge, from D. Plakentias metro station to the 31st km. (Stavros Bridge) and back, as well as from the Evangelismos metro station to Panathenaic Stadium. Thus, supporters will have the opportunity to cheer for their own athletes at the race’s most demanding moments and then, to welcome them during the magical moment of their finish at the Stadium. THE «GREEN» PROGRAM OF ΑΜΑ Towards a Zero Waste Future Marathon

The Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) respects the environment, supports the United Nations’ sustainable development goals and follows the AIMS’ “Green Guidelines” under the guidance of the environmental organization «Institute Team for the World». In 2019, along with Coca-Cola as main sponsor and partner, SEGAS will intensify its activations and communication strategy towards a zero waste marathon. The ZERO WASTE FUTURE program by Coca-Cola aims το intervene, educate and change citizens’ behavior regarding waste. Athens Marathon’s environmental footprint should be radically reduced by adopting circular economy and recycling practices during the event. Thus, the following activations will take place: • Collection of plastic packages, so to be recycled and reused, acquiring a second life. • Organic waste will be composted respectively • Collection of slightly used sports shoes, so to be reused by underprivileged individuals, groups and refugees • Collection of used runners’ clothes, discarded at Marathon start, so to be reused by people in need • continue the pilot upcycling project, which engages skillful refugees, to revive used marathon material, such as banners and nets, by transforming them into “new” useful items 71
