THE BIRTH OF THE MARATHON RACE From legend to sport to social movement

The Athens Marathon has its roots in the victory of the Greeks over the Persians, in the historic battle of Marathon of 490B.C. Post battle, a legendary Athenian soldier-messenger ran in his armor from Marathon to Athens to announce the victorious news and then died from exhaustion. His sacrifice inspired the birth of the Marathon sport during the first Modern Olympic Games oin 1896 in Athens. Charilaos Vasilkos was the winner of the first marathon race trials held on the authentic course (1896) and Spyros Louis won the first ever gold medal in the modern Olympic Marathon (1896). In 1921, the International Association of Athletics Federations standardized the 42,195m (26.2 miles) as the official Marathon distance. Since then, the victory of the Greek Stylianos Kyriakides at the Boston Marathon (1946) and the heroic Marathon Peace March of Grigoris Labrakis (1963) paved the path for the birth of the annual Athens Classic Marathon (1983). In 2014, the race was renamed ÂŤAthens Marathon. The AuthenticÂť and is now recognized as one of the most important international marathon events. 11

ΤHE 2019 - 2026 AMA MEDALS

2500+ History on a collection of eight medals

Based on the Greek roots of Marathon, the Hellenic Athletics Federation decided to depict the history of the sport on the medals of Athens Marathon, designed by KIZI Design Studio. Starting in 2019 and for 8 consecutive years, one side of the finishers’ medal will depict a different historic milestone of the Marathon’s long history. Famous artists have already committed to draw the best moments of the sport. In 2019, the «Battle of Marathon 490BC» has been depicted on the medal Athens Marathon, with the unique style of the famous Greek painter, Alekos Fassianos. In the following years, the legendary «Soldier-Messenger», the «Birth of Marathon 1896» and other turning points of Marathon’s evolution will be designed by different famous artists, such as Kostas Varotsos, Yannis Psichopedis and others. Each individual medal in the 8-piece collector’s series will be engraved with a single letter. Once the set has been completed in 2026, on Marathon’s 130th Anniversary, the letters on the eight individual medals will spell the world “Marathon”.

13

ΤHE 2019 ATHENS MARATHON MEDAL The Marathon Battle by Alekos Fassianos

During the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC., eleven thousand soldiers from Athens and Plataies under the leadership of the genius General Miltiades, fought bravely against the gigantic army of over 100,000 Persians. The victory of the Greek army over the Persians prevented the Persian invasion into Europe, allowing in the following years (5th century B.C.) the growth of Democracy and the development of Arts and Culture in Greece, and mainly in Athens, setting the basis of Western Civilization. This great important historical moment is inextricably linked to the legend of the soldier runner, who sacrificed his life carrying the victorious message from the battlefield of Marathon to the people of Athens. The 2019 Athens Marathon medal, the first of the new 8-medal series of the event, is dedicated to this glorious battle and is signed by Alekos Fassianos. He is globally known as one of the greatest contemporary Greek artists, whose work has been acknowledged from New York to Tokyo and exhibited in many major museums and galleries around the world. The Hymn of Authentic Marathon

After the legendary Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. a soldier-messenger ran in his armor, from Marathon to Athens, to announce «Nenikikamen» (Rejoice, We Won) to the Athenians and then died from exhaustion. The famous Cypriot composer George Theofanous - inspired by the soldier’ sacrifice - wrote and offered to the Hellenic Athletics Federation and the marathon community the Hymn of the Authentic Marathon. Recorded in the Greek Public Television studios, the Anthem titled «NENIKIKAMEN» was first presented to the public, inside the Panathenaic Stadium on 11 November 2018, during the 36th Athens Marathon event. The team responsible for the recording, production and presentation of the Anthem consists of the baritone Kyros Patsalides, the mezzo-soprano Ines Zikou, the Greek Radio Symphony under maestro Tasos Symeonides, the Choir of Public Power Corporation Group under maestro Kostis Kostandaras, and the leading violinist of Thessaloniki State Orchestra, as orchestrator, Antonis Sousamoglou. “It is so beautiful to live for Peace, it is so great to die for Peace.” Grigoris Labrakis The sayings, life and death of Grigoris Labrakis illustrate the core values of the Athens Marathon and its devotion to peace. THE HISTORIC START AND THE PANATHENAIC STADIUM From Marathon to Athens

The authentic Marathon course starts from the town of Marathon and finishes inside the Panathenaic Stadium, Athens. This historic start has marked many races during the 120+ years lifespan of the sport. It also hosts the engraved marble stone of the first modern Marathon race of 1896 and the cauldron - initially made for the Athens 2004 Olympics - which holds the Marathon Flame. The Panathenaic «Marble» Stadium lies on the site of an ancient Greek stadium erected in 338 B.C. by the orator Lykourgos. The ancient stadium was first used in 330/329 B.C. to house the «Great Panathenean» athletic games. It was used during the Roman period, but was abandoned during the Christian period, when earlier religions and barbarian spectacles were banned. On the occasion of the first revival of the ancient Olympic Games known as the Zappeian Olympiads of 1870 and 1875, the Stadium was reconstructed, with the generous support of Georgios Averof, to host the first modern Olympic Games of 1896. Today, the Panathenaic Stadium is owned by the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Athens Marathon is the only official sporting event it hosts. 27

A SUPPORTIVE ACTION FOR MARATHON RUNNERS «AVRA Wave»: We Run Together

Within the framework of the Athens Marathon, 2019 became the launch year of a new supportive action for Marathon runners at the 31st mark of the 42,195m classic route, known among marathoners as the famous “wall”. AVRA Natural Mineral Water, a longtime supporter of the Authentic Marathon, initiated the «AVRA Wave», a unique «encouragement wave» which brought marathon runners closer to their supporters, at the toughest point of their race. There, the «AVRA Wave» welcome supporters and encouraged, along with them, the heroic efforts of the runners, with the passion and emotion that families and friends can offer to their own people. The «AVRA Wave» mini-buses transferred marathon supporters, free of charge, from D. Plakentias metro station to the 31st km. (Stavros Bridge) and back, as well as from the Evangelismos metro station to Panathenaic Stadium. Thus, hundreds of supporters had the opportunity to cheer for their own athletes at the race’s most demanding points and then, to welcome them during the magical moment of their finish at Kallimarmaro. 39

ΤHE AIMS MARATHON SYMPOSIUM Τhe annual international forum of Race Directors

Since 2 0 0 7, the International Association of Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) organize the AIMS Marathon Symposium where race directors and executives, from 75+ races, explore issues about race management and operations. The annual 3-hour seminar takes place in the Athens Marathon hotel, on Saturday morning. Major international speakers and well known marathon race organizers give speeches and presentations and analyze case studies on a specific topic each year. The theme of the 2019 AIMS Marathon Symposium was «Technology and Mass Long Distance Races». Topics discussed in the past 13 years of the Symposium are related to management, marketing, operations, health services, quality control, safety and security, doping control, data protection, charity and environmental protection projects. The Greek National Tourism Organization, the Region of Attica and the Athens International Airport co sponsor this event. 48

TΗΕ OPENING CEREMONY OF ΑΜΑ Honoring the Marathon’s birthplace

Just as the Olympic movement has Ancient Olympia as its historic point of reference, the Marathon movement recognizes the Tomb of Marathon as the event’s sacred birthplace. On that ground, the Hellenic Athletics Federation and the Town of Marathon, supported by the Greek National Tourism Organization and the Attica Region, organize the opening ceremony of the Athens Marathon in the archeological site of the Marathon Tomb on the eve of the Authentic Marathon Race. This year, under the direction of choreographer Artemis Ignatiou, the Art Dance Theater commemorated the 192 Athenians who died in the Battle of Marathon (490BC). The event reminds the world of this historic encounter, the legendary soldier-messenger and how he is connected to the birth of the Marathon event (1896). After the ceremonial chorus act, the lighting of the Marathon Flame takes place, followed by a torch relay to the historic Race Sart, in the town of Marathon. The ritual is broadcasted live by Greek Public Television (watch it here) and attended by representatives of 75+ international marathon races, lead figures of the sport, top marathon runners and other participants. 50

ΤHE LIGHTING OF THE MARATHON FLAME

Ruth Chepngetich Stefano Baldini

At the Marathon Tomb

Established in 2007 by the Hellenic Athletics Federation, the International Association of Marathons and Distance Races and the town of Marathon, the Marathon Flame is an international symbol of human will which promotes the ideals and principles of sports and running worldwide. Every year, on the eve of the Authentic Marathon race, after the Opening Ceremony (a chorus act replicating the legendary Battle of Marathon), the lighting of the torch takes place at the sacred site of the Marathon Tomb. The Flame is handed to an important marathon figurehead (e.g. Olympic medalist, famous runner) and aTorch Realy to the Historic Marathon Start follows, where the AIMS ÂŤBest Marathon RunnersÂť of the year light the cauldron of the Marathon Altar. The Flame is kept at the altar until the following morning to welcome the 20.000+ marathon runners at the start. After the race, the Flame is moved to the Marathon Museum in the town of Marathon, where it remains lit throughout the year and is available to travel to other international marathon events as a symbol of unity, fraternity, peace and culture.

52

THE MARATHON FLAME TRAVELS AROUND THE WORLD Spreading the «Symbol of Human Will»

The Marathon Flame as the symbol of Human Will, aims to promote the unity, fraternity, friendship and peace amongst the world’s nations and to enhance running and participation in long distance races as a healthy lifestyle. Since 2007, the flame has traveled over 30 times to other Marathon events to cities in four different continents, as well as to Antarctica: Boston and Chicago (USA), Ottawa and Toronto (Canada), Mexico City (Mexico), Quito (Equator), Pietermaritzburg (South Africa), Panjin, Shanghai and Xiamen (China), Mumbai (India), Dusseldorf (Germany), Lindau & Bregenz (Germany-Austria), Vienna (Austria), Belgrade (Serbia), Genova (Italy), Prague (Czech Republic), Omsk (Siberia-Russia), Tromso (Norway), Nicosia, Paphos and Larnaka (Cyprus) and Thessaloniki, Nafplion and Chania (Greece). The of Marathon Flame always take place under the auspices of AIMS, while the Hellenic Athletics Federation/Athens Marathon and the Marathon Town act as the guardians and care takers of the Flame.

ΤHE «PROTERGIA» SPONSORS’ VILLAGE Across the Panathenaic Stadium

Runners, friends, f a m i l y members and spectators, besides the Marathon EXPO, had the chance to meet the sponsors, partners and NGOs of the event at the PROTERGIA Sponsors’ Village, which operated on Saturday afternoon and Sunday all day, just across the Panathenaic Stadium at the Karaiskaki Square of Zappeion Megaron. It was a place for entertainment, where one could try new products for running, health and diet, play games and take challenges for all ages, have gifts by the event’s sponsors, meet other runners, buy memorabilia of the event (e.g. AMA merchandising), get refreshments and food, meet and support several charity organizations promoting social responsibility projects or green initiatives. In 2019, the PROTERGIA Sponsors’ Village was visited by more than 70,000 runners and spectators, who thought of it as a great opportunity to rest, wander around and get entertained during a very long race day.

THE «X-RAY» OF THE AUTHENTIC ROUTE A challenge for brave runners

The Authentic Marathon route is a challenging linear course. It could be divided into four main sections. The race starts in the town of Marathon. The first 3kms are slightly downhill so self-control is recommended. Then it is mostly flat until you reach the 10K mark in the middle of Nea Makri municipality. The second part of eight kilometers consists of uphills and downhills, alternatively, and should not be run aggressively. There is only one long downhill relief after 17K. The third part of 13 kilometers is known for its challenging hills, while the most difficult spots are the hills at kilometers 20, 25, 28 and 31. The final part, the last 11 kilometers of the authentic course are mostly downhill but can become challenging due to fatigue. The steepest downhills are at kilometers 32 and 37. Everyone’s favorite long-lasting memory is the one of the last 600m down Herodou Attikou street and the final turn into the crowded, unique in the world, Panathenaic “Marble” Stadium. 60

AMA KIDS’ FUN RUNS All along the Marathon course

One of the major missions of the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) is the initiation of youth into sports. SEGAS takes advantage of its prestigious running events to bring elementary school children closer to running. Within the context of the Athens Marathon, Fun Runs for children (9-12 years old) take place on the Sunday of the main event, both in the streets of Athens and on the roads of municipalities along the classic Marathon route. In the center of Athens, the 1200m Fun Run offers children the unique experience of crossing the famous finish line inside the emblematic Panathenaic Stadium and watching the glorious finish of the Athens Marathon winners and other participants. Local Councils schedule the various Fun Runs of 700m to 1200m along the authentic course, 30’ to 45’ before the lead elite runners pass through the municipality, providing a wonderful opportunity for the entire family to combine the pleasure of participating in the event with being among the front-line spectators watching the athletes in full action. In 2019, more than 7,500 school children participated in the 8 races of the event.

ΤHE AMA VOLUNTEERS’ PROGRAM Be part of the event, without running

S i n c e 2003, the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), via the Athens Marathon Volunteer Program, brings together socially active individuals whose main purpose is to offer impeccable support to runners, visitors and fans of its world-wideevents, in addition to the joy of personal fulfillment and entertainment. More than 3,500 AMA volunteers share their enthusiasm for social giving, a vision which has evolved over time into providing high quality services during the 5-day event and its parallel activities. Each volunteer, whether individually or through collaboratin gorganizations, brings a unique added valueto the event and raises awareness for important social and environmental initiatives. The Volunteer Program trains, supports and coordinates all volunteers to be the core not only of a great international event, but of all actions related to social cohesion and sustainability. SEGAS is grateful and respectful to all Authentic Marathon volunteers who have contributed to making 2019 yet another historic year to remember. 62

THE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROGRAM OF ΑΜΑ Solidarity through the charities

Since 2006, t h e Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) donates the proceeds from local Health Running Clubs’ race entry fees to various NGOs and social charities. As of 2009, the Social Responsibility Program of the Athens Marathon collaborates annually with several major local and international NGOs that take advantage of the Authentic Marathon’s popularity to raise money for their purposes and projects. In 2011, SEGAS donated 100,000 euro, of AMA budget, to support UNESCO’s fund for the education of young African girls, while in 2012, actively promoted the campaign «WhyPoverty» run by the Greek PublicTelevision and other international media channels. In 2019, SEGAS, AMA sponsors, NGOs and other entities raised almost half a million euro for charity purposes on the ocassion of the 37th Athens Marathon. 63

ΤHE AMA «GREEN» PROGRAM Towards a Zero Waste Future

The Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) respects the environment, supports the United Nations’ sustainable development goals and follows AIMS “Green Guidelines” under the guidance of the environmental organization INSTITUTE TEAM FOR THE WORLD. In 2019, SEGAS joined forces with the ZERO WASTE FUTURE initiative by Coca-Cola, official sponsor of the 37th Authentic Marathon, and extended its goals towards a zero waste marathon. The initiative radically reduced the event’s environmental footprint: • collection of a total of 13.5 tons of recyclable materials and organic waste (55% increase since 2018) by using 500 waste bins at the designated Zero Waste Spots of AMA, • collection of 9.2 tons of plastic bottles/packaging materials, • introduction, for the first time in Greece, of an event’s medal ceremonies podium produced from 162kgrs of recycled plastic, • collection of slightly used 400 pairs of sport shoes and approx. 700kgrs of sport clothing to be donated to underprivileged individuals, groups and refugees, • repurposing of used materials, such as banners and mesh, by transforming them into “new” useful items with the engagement of skillful refugees. 66

«MUSIC ON THE RUN»

Full community support for the runners

T h e “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” has a rhythm of its own, as talented volunteer musicians and dancers join the event. The designated entertainment zones along the course encourage runners to keep their pace till the finish line. Their ubiquitous presence on race day enhances the festive city-wide celebrations. In 2019, the “Music On the Run” Program of AMA – mainly supported by the event’s Grand Sponsor, OPAP S.A. - welcomed 38+ bands and DJ’s along the different race courses. The entertainment zones hosted artists such as Nic DeeJay and the Band, Mica Eio, Groovy Peacocks, Μanos Mavrakis, Nora Tsopanaki and Ioanna Omorfia, as well as percussion bands Quilombo and Lagi, and the philharmonic orchestras of the Municipality of Athens and of other municipalities along the course. DJ Stathis Alexandrakis (AKA DJ Noiz) was also welcomed on the decks of the “Sponsors’ Village”. 68

THE ΑΜΑ AS A «GROWTH CATALYST» The «boom» of running movement in Greece

T h e success of Athens Marathon, followed by the establishment of Athens Half Marathon and the running series «Run Greece», has created the framework for a huge growth of the running movement and the further development of a healthy lifestyle in Greece. So, from the ~50 events and ~15,000 registered runners, in 2006, today, the running market in Greece consists of 500+ races and 250,000+ runners. This growth was also boosted by the flourishing of many Running Clubs, as well as the multiplication of running events all around the country. During the huge economic crisis in Greece, the successful organization of top running events by the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) and the positive attitude of the country’s growing running community provided to the people powerful messages of hope and optimism. Today, assisted by the new legislation regarding staging of running events, SEGAS is ready to lead running in Greece to even bigger growth, establishing better and safer standards for the organization of running races.

THE ATHENS HALF MARATHON Welcoming Spring in Greece
