Driver volunteers needed for local Meals on Wheels Program By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The local Meals on Wheels Program is looking for a few good volunteers. The program which works to deliver hot meals to homebound residents in Seguin and Guadalupe County is hoping to signup individuals willing to give of their time whether it be three hours a week or even one hour a month. The program which works in partnership with the Comal County Senior Citizen Foundation in New Braunfels is locally coordinated by St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Seguin. The local church each weekday assembles the volunteers needed to deliver the warm meals to dozens and dozens of elderly and homebound residents. Karen Wallock, who works to recruit volunteers for the local program, says the Meals on Wheels can never have too many volunteers. "We have a good number of volun-

teers but life happens. So, some of our volunteers haven't been able to drive as much as they wanted to and so we just need a supplement and we need people who can drive on a regular basis but we also need people who drive kind of the last minute. We sign up for driving through Sign Up Genius. You have to be able to access the calendar online and we will help people that don't know how to do that. I've made house calls to do that. It's a very easy way to sign-up and you don't have to commit to every Tuesday morning for the rest of your life. You sign-up whenever it's convenient for you. It might be once a month. It might be once a week. We have some people that drive three times a week so whatever works for you is fine," said Wallock. Wallock says volunteers not only have to pass a background check but they must also have a vehicle and proof of insurance. Wallock says the program is a great way to give back and can be outfitted for most schedules. See WHEELS, page 3

County collection stations operating as expected Residents reminded on fees, schedule for collection stations By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is applauding the smooth opening and operation of its two county collection stations.

Loads of trash and recyclables are now being accepted at the Kingsbury Collection Station and Marion Collection Station. The stations are being operated four times a week by Republic Services.

"They are up and running. We've got the two sites. The first day was Nov. 6 and it seems as though everything is going well. We haven't had any concerns, complaints. We've gotten some feedback from the constables. We didn't know how heavy the traffic was going to be starting out. We didn't want there to be traffic problems. weekends, on the Saturdays. They said it really was not as busy as expected but had good traffic flow. There weren't really backups so it seems like everything is working well," said Kutscher. In addition to household trash, items can also be dropped off for recycling.

Republic will recycle "tires,

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says he's pleased to see that the service has returned for county residents. He says the county has been without the sites since the end of July when the company could not compromise on a deal with the county.

The Kingsbury Collection Station is located at the corner of FM 2438 and County Road 204 (Old Seguin-Luling Road) while the Marion site is located at the corner of Vernell Street and State Highway 78 on the east side of Marion.

Kutscher says because it's been a while since the stations have been opened, the county was not sure how the initial operation would run. Luckily however, Kutscher says things seem to be operating pretty smooth.

"Every house I go to, I receive a blessing. The clients are most gracious and grateful for receiving the meals. I mean every time I go home, I count my blessings that I have family to take care of me and that I can maybe help to take care of somebody who doesn't have as much family as I do but everybody is just so happy to receive the meals. One lady said 'oh, I usually take half of this meal and then I eat the other half for supper.' So, it's like 'oh!' I wish we could do more but she is grateful to have what she has -- every one of them. The requirements to be a client is tht you can't drive anymore. So these people are mostly housebound unless somebody comes and takes them somewhere. They've lost a lot of their independence," said Wallock. The first step for those wishing to volunteer will be to call or stop by St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. The church phone number is 830372-4330. The church is located at 201 E. Nolte.

Bulldogs close out year with 8-2 overall record, 8-1 mark in the ASC Among the five teams that D3football.com projected last week as the five teams that would receive the Pool C bids, all five of those teams won their final games. Plus No. 4-ranked University of Wisconsin at Whitewater lost its first game of the year and lost its conference's automatic bid. University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh knocked off the Warhawks and claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's automatic bid. UW-Whitewater took one of the five Pool C bids. The other four at-large bids went to: Wesley (Del.), Redlands (Calif.), Wartburg (Iowa), and North Central (Ill.). Each of those five teams has just one loss. Not one two-loss team received an at-large bid.

TLU senior running-back Ian Leslie ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the final game of his college football career Saturday at Bulldog Stadium. Photo by Dustin Wyatt. (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran's 2019 football season officially came to a close Sunday when the team did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Football Championship. TLU (8-2 overall) finished second in the American Southwest Conference with an 8-1 league record. Those eight wins in ASC play are a new TLU record. The second-place finish is TLU's best showing in the ASC. TLU's signature win of 2019 was its 38-27 road victory over then-No. 6 HardinSimmons on Oct. 5. Since Carl Gustafson took over as head coach, TLU has produced 6-4, 7-3 and 8-2 records in successive years. The Bulldogs finished third in the ASC in 2017, third in the ASC in 2018, and now second in the league in 2019. TLU's two losses this year came to Hendrix College (Ark.), in TLU's first game of the year, and to No. 2/No. 1 Mary HardinBaylor in TLU's ninth game of the season. The Bulldogs needed a lot of help Saturday from other teams around the nation to be considered for one of the five Pool C "at-large" bids.

Susquehanna (Pa.), at 9-1 and ranked fourth in the last South Region rankings, was left out of the NCAA post-season. TLU was eighth in the final South Region rankings, released last week before the final games of the regular season. The Bulldogs advanced to the 2014 NCAA Division III playoffs as a Pool B selection. TLU played in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference that season and had a 9-1 regular-season record. The SCAC did not have an automatic bid to the NCAA post-season in 2014. TLU defeated McMurry 57-14 on Saturday at Bulldog Stadium. The game was the final collegiate contest for 14 Bulldog seniors. "The leadership that our seniors have provided, not just this year, our team has seen that we have made positive steps these past few years mainly because of those seniors," said Carl Gustafson, TLU's third-year head coach. "Their leadership, their resolve, their work ethic, they take care of the young guys - I think our team wanted to play well today to pay tribute to the seniors, and I think we did." The Bulldogs did their best Saturday against McMurry to make a case for a playoff bid. TLU dominated both lines of scrimmage by rushing for 387 yards and seven TDs and collecting nine tackles for loss (including five sacks). TLU's seven rushing touchdowns was one shy of the school record of eight, set in 1998 against Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Senior running back Ian Leslie celebrated Senior Day with 130

Marion girls double up Dilley (Marion) - Marion is 2-0 to start the 2019-20 girls basketball season after cruising past Dilley 4020 at home last Friday. The Bulldogs overcame a slow start offensively to shut out the Wolves 18-0 in the second quarter and take a 20-2 lead into halftime. Dilley won the third quarter 149 to make it 29-16 going

into the fourth period. Marion used an 11-4 edge in the final stanza to win by 20. Marion's Lizzie Abrameit matched Dilley's point total by herself with a game-high 20 points. She also contributed six rebounds and two steals. Sarah Cook grabbed 13

rebounds to go with two points, while Lily Bek pulled down 12 rebounds and scored four points. Molly Rooke and Alicia Durbin each scored four points as well. Signe Rabenaldt added three, Toryn Autry two, and Cheyenne Dickey one. Marion travels to face Lytle on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

rushing yards and a career-best three touchdowns on 16 carries. Leslie scored on a pair of 1-yard runs and had a 13-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter. Leslie and most of his 13 senior teammates were a part of TLU's 2-8 season in 2016. Since that year, starting with the Carl Gustafson hiring in November of 2016, the Bulldogs have gone 21-9 with records of 6-4, 7-3, and 8-2. The Bulldogs finished third in the ASC in 2017 and 2018 and now have a runner-up conference finish. "I think us going through that 2-8 trial made that bond what we have today," Leslie said. "Again, we are flipping it from 2-8 to 8-2. We had to grow together. We came in together. I'm sure after that first year everybody was like, "What's going on?" But once we got that new culture in, we took it upon ourselves to do that extra work in the summer. Again, going from 2-8 to 8-2, you pretty much don't hear about that in three or four years. I think this class is pretty special." Leslie's fellow senior running back Austin Mathews also went over the 100-yard mark Saturday. Mathews rushed for 116 yards on 17 carries and scored on a pair of six-yard TD runs. Mathews finished his Bulldog career with 26 rushing TDs in 33 games played. He rushed for 1,999 yards on 355 carries, averaging 5.6 yards per carry. Sophomore quarterback Wade Freeman rushed for a career-high 127 yards on only 11 carries. He averaged 11.5 yards per carry, and he scored on a three-yard rush on the Bulldogs' opening drive. The Bulldogs led 37-7 at the half. TLU scored just before the half on a 29-yard scoring strike from Freeman to senior Charles Robinson Jr. Robinson caught five passes for 75 yards. Sam Guzman led TLU in total tackles, with 11. He had a half-sack and a tackle for loss. Brandon Bennett added nine total tackles, including one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. The fourteen Bulldog seniors playing in their last home game were: Mathews, Leslie, Robinson, defensive end Manny Longoria, linebacker Derek Dunn, cornerback Kedrick Ward, offensive lineman Coy Tutt, offensive lineman Cameron Maha, offensive lineman Travis York, offensive lineman Garrett Garza, offensive lineman Andrew Lotz, linebacker Adairius Norwood, receiver CJ Romero, and offensive lineman Benjamin Rodriguez.

Vital Statistics Gordon Lynn Tate

Gordon “Lynn” Tate, age 76, of Kingsbury, Texas, passed away on November 14, 2019. Lynn was born on November 22, 1942 in Victoria, Texas, to Harold Glen and Maxine Ellen (Gray) Tate. After graduating from high school, Lynn joined the United States Marine Corps in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and continued in the Marine Reserves after his active duty tour. In 1968 he received his Certificate of Apprenticeship in the trade of electrician. After many years of being a union electrician, he was elected Business Manager of IBEW Local Union 278 in Corpus Christi, Texas - the youngest business manager ever to be elected in an IBEW local. In that capacity he often managed more than a thousand electricians from all over the country placing them in jobs building the huge refineries in Corpus Christi. Because of his leadership capabilities, in 1978 he was appointed by Governor Dolph Briscoe to be Commissioner of the Texas State Commission of Labor & Standards. Other appointments included Ambassador of Goodwill and Special Assistant to the Attorney General, and he served in Governor Mark White’s administration as Director of the Joint Training and Partnership Division whose efforts retrained thousands of workers who had lost their jobs during the economic downturn in the early 1980s. After his service in State government, he created Texans for Civil Justice, an advocacy group which lobbied for the rights of and compensatory damages for catastrophically-injured Texans. Lynn always was mission-driven to look out for the “little guy”, those people who worked hard to support their families and who wanted to maintain the standard of living and privileges of the middle class in America. He never ceased to advocate for fair wages and practices for workers in any capacity he served.

To no one’s surprise, his most important and favorite roles were loving husband, proud father, and doting and adventurous grandfather. Lynn excelled in many sports and led his family and friends into many adventures involving water skiing, snow skiing, motorcycle riding, running, fishing, hunting, skeet shooting, roping and ranching. He earned a reputation for being an avid car, boat and RV trader! He was known for his hilarious storytelling, prompting many family members to request that he tell the same stories over and over again. Throughout his life, he loved the land and the animals the most. That was evident through his actions and his words, especially through his cowboy poetry. He was asked to read his poems in many venues— the Seguin library, beside the family campfires, and he read them at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. During his time in Seguin, he volunteered for the local ICA chapter and served on the statewide Board of Directors for the Independent Cattleman’s Association of Texas. He also volunteered each year at Round Up to raise money for Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and participated in the South Texas Cowboy Gathering in support of the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. Lynn is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Judy Ann (Walden) Tate Ponton. He is also preceded in death by many of his beloved animals. Survivors include his loving wife of thirtyone years, Sharon G. (Budnick) Tate; brother, Dr. Glen Tate and wife Diana; sister, Sharon (Tate) Knapp and husband David; sister-in-law, Janet (Budnick) Brown and husband Michael; brother-inlaw, Russell Budnick; daughters, Debbie Tate, Teri Tate and Laurie Brooks and spouse Curtis Gipson; sons, Guy Tate, and Scott Brooks and wife Deleigh; grandchildren, Cole Brooks, Hannah Brooks, and Braeden Tate Wade and his father Brandon Wade. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, numerous other loving family members and a host of loyal, grieving friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5p to 7p. Funeral service celebrating Lynn’s life will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 2p at Tres Hewell Mortuary with Reverend Jeremy Roy officiating. Interment with military

honors will follow in Dugger Cemetery on South Highway 123. A reception will be held immediately following at the Agricultural Heritage Center (Red Barn). Serving as pallbearers will be Cole Brooks, Scott Brooks, Daniel Darby, Gary Gray, Richard Gray, Derek Knapp, Dustin Knapp and Justin Tate. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Michael Brown, Troy Callaway, Bill Darby, Curtis Gipson, Alan Guisinger, David Knapp, Al Lain, Ronnie McDaniel, Bruce Nixon, Jim Smith, Glen Tate, Guy Tate, Braeden Tate Wade and Brandon Wade. The Tate family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to the many loving helpers who came in the home to give Lynn as much comfort and kindness as he needed. Appreciation also goes to the devoted, skilled nurses of Opus Care Hospice and Limitless Healthcare Staffing. Memorial contributions may be made to the Outdoor Learning Center, 1865 E. US Highway 90, Seguin, TX 78155, Guadalupe County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1593, Seguin, TX 78155-1593 or the ALS Association of Texas, 1315 Sam Bass Cir, Round Rock, TX 78681. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Larry Engelke

Larry Engelke, age 72 of Floresville, formerly of Seguin, passed away on November 16, 2019. Visitation will be held on T u e s d a y , November 19, 2019 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Serving as pallbearers will be Miles “Bubba” Engelke, Ricky Engelke, Travis Engelke, Dustin Engelke, Colton Engelke and Eric Bint. Dad taught us so much... To be kind, love and care for everyone. He was the best man we knew. The best husband to Mom, and absolutely the best PawPaw. Most of all, he was the best Daddy two girls could ever have. Larry grew up in Seguin and was a graduate of the Seguin High School Class of 1965. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Larry was a Texas State Trooper for 30 years. After retiring from the DPS he worked as a Safety Director for Express Carriers, then started his own trucking company hauling cattle for his son-in-law, Vince. He just never could retire. He served with the Texas State Troopers Association for many years, most recently on the Board of Directors. Larry never met a stranger, he touched so many lives. He would go out of his way to always encourage and he loved past any faults. Larry was a true friend. As all of you know he LOVED to hunt and fish with family and friends... We are sure you all have a story or two about that... Memorial contributions may be made to The Country Church, P. O. Box 421, Marion, Texas, 78124 or to the Texas State Troopers Association, In honor of Larry Engelke for families of fallen Troopers, 5555 N. Lamar Boulevard, Suite J105, Austin, Texas, 78751. Report: Trump Backs Off Plan To Ban Flavored Vape Products

Lung Association Says It's Time For Flu Shots

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump is reportedly backing off a plan to ban some flavored vaping products. The Washington Post reports that Trump worried the move could lead to job losses, which would be a drag on his re-election campaign. Trump previously said he supported banning kid-friendly e-cigarette flavors like mint and candy flavors. First Lady Melania Trump and the President's daughter Ivanka were reportedly key in getting him to initially back the plan. The White House says Trump is committed to responsibly protecting children's health.

(Chicago, IL) -- With Thanksgiving less than two weeks away now, the American Lung Association is now joining health officials all over the country in recommending flu shots. They recommend flu shots for everyone six months of age and older. Flu shots are especially important for children, teens, seniors, pregnant women and people with serious health conditions such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease. The CDC says more than 42-million people were sickened by flu during the last flu season and 61-thousand died.

Poll Shows 7 Of 10 Americans Are Stressed By Mass Shootings

Medicine May Be As Good As Surgery For Some Heart Patients

(Washington, DC) -- A new poll shows that mass shootings are the most prevalent source of stress for Americans. That's what 71-percent of adults told pollsters at the American Psychological Association. Psychologist Jim DiazGranados says because of mass shootings, they're changing their behaviors when it comes to shopping malls, houses of worship, theaters and outdoor festivals. Last Thursday, a teen shooter killed two classmates and wounded three others at his high school in Southern California and then shot himself in the head.

(Philadelphia, PA) -- A new trial finds high-risk patients with stable heart disease may do as well on just medication as opposed to invasive surgery. The data found that invasive surgeries often helped improve chest pain and quality of life, but a lot of variables were unchanged. Things like subsequent heart attacks and heart failure did not show a significant difference. The results were presented over the weekend at the American Heart Association's annual conference in Philadelphia.
