New year, new award for GRMC
Hospital receives the America's Best Hospitals for Patient Safety Award By Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has started the new year off with a bang. The hospital announced on New Year's Day that it has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety by the Women’s Choice Award. The Women's Choice Award is known as a top referral source for women. It works to empower women and help them make informed and smart healthcare decisions by identifying the country's best healthcare institutions. This year, GRMC is being honored with the Best Hospitals for Patient Safety Award®. GRMC officials say this is a significant honor for the hospital. They say the award signifies that GRMC is in the top eight percent of the more than 4,800 hospitals evaluated in the United States. GRMC's success goes well beyond that criteria and it actually falls into the top percent of hospitals when it comes to patient safety. GRMC CEO Robert Haynes says this is another indication that the hospital continues to provide quality care for the people it serves in this region. “This national recognition from the Women’s Choice Award signifies that GRMC is one of 379 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for patient safety in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award”,
said Haynes. “This award confirms our testament to the high standard of care provided to patients every day by the staff at GRMC and to our dedication in providing highquality, safe care to every life we are privileged to touch.” To receive the award, hospitals must also use an Inpatient Safe Surgery Checklist to assess effective communication and safe practices during three perioperative periods: prior to administration of anesthesia; prior to skin incision; and prior to the patient leaving the operating room or procedural area. Rhonda Unruh, GRMC vice-president of quality, says this award is a big deal to those who work inside the hospital, but she says it may be even more significant to the patients they serve. She says it demonstrates the hospital's commitment to provide quality service to their patients and their families. "So what I think I would want the public to understand from this award, is that GRMC is a place that they can trust; because we are putting processes and practices in place to make sure that while you are here under our care, that you are receiving the best qaulity care possible and the safest care possible. We really want to make sure that healthcare reduces suffering and that patients feel safe. So I think that this is what that award should mean to them. They can trust GRMC," said Unruh. GRMC, continued from page 1 Qualifying for the award is no easy task, and the standard set by Women's Choice Award is said to be quite high.
“We’ll get those little devils!”
“Very few hospitals can say they are the safest in the country, and by identifying those who are, the Women’s Choice Award is helping the female consumer identify the hospitals in her area that are dedicated to creating the safest patient experience,” said Delia Passi, Founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “This recognition is critical for women as they make 80% of healthcare decisions and need to know they are putting themselves—and their family members—in safe hands.” The methodology used to select GRMC as one of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety is unique in that it evaluates 11 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) measures of infections and complications, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems

It is the only award recognizing excellence in patient safety based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence. Healthcare has made significant strides in patient safety in recent years. Hospital-acquired conditions declined 21% from 2010 to 2015, resulting in 125,000 fewer patient deaths according to a report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Hospital-acquired conditions are conditions that a patient develops while in the hospital being treated for something else. Better Business Bureau offers tips for successful New Year's resolutions where to start looking. Always take a tour of facilities and read the contract closely to determine how much a membership costs each month. You can also check the gym's business profile on bbb.org. Watch for free trial scams. Some health and fitness goals, like quitting smoking or losing weight, can be a slow process. You may even feel like you aren't making much progress, so turning to "miracle" products may begin to seem like a good idea. First and foremost, you should always be careful when taking products for your health and should consult with your doctor first. Second, products using big claims and celebrity endorsements may be attempting to lure you into a free trial scam. This is when a company claims it'll send you a sample of its product for free, you just need to give your credit card information to pay shipping and handling. Later, you find a charge for the full cost of the product. If this is the direction you decide to go when working on your New Year's resolutions, always read the terms and conditions carefully before placing your order and use your credit card for extra protection.
By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- With the arrival of the new year, many are looking back at what they accomplished in 2019 and looking forward at how they can improve in 2020. The fresh start of a new year is the perfect time to make resolutions, and improving health is often at the top of the list. While set with good intentions, the American Psychological Association (APA) says New Year's resolutions can create anxiety if left unaccomplished. They recommend starting small and asking
for support. Better Business Bureau serving the Heart of Texas offers these tips to support consumers on their journey to a happier, healthier 2020: Get fit with the right gym. New gym memberships increase at the beginning of January, when consumers decide to invest in a gym and their health. There can be many benefits to working out at a public gym: classes, equipment, accountability and more. However, you want to be sure you're at the place that's right for you. Knowing your fitness goals and setting priorities can help you determine
Care for your mental health, too. Caring for your health extends beyond your physical health. Helpguide.org emphasizes the importance of social connection when caring for your mental health. In fact, a report released by Better Business Bureau at the end of September showed social isolation to be a factor in increasing scam risk. Those with fewer people in their lives to discuss potential scam offers with were more likely to become victims of fraud and lose money. Take time this year to connect with old friends and meet new ones too. For more information visit bbb.org.

Facebook Removing HIV Drug Ads Because Of Misleading Info
Sanders Campaign Says Doctors Declare Bernie Healthy
(Menlo Park, CA) -- HIV drug advertisements are being taken down on Facebook over complaints they contain misleading information. Dozens of LGBTQ advocacy groups had been calling for the removal of the ads for Truvada. They linked the drug with potential side effects such as severe bone and kidney damage. A Facebook official told NBC News its independent fact-checking partners found some of the ads are misleading and "they can no longer run" on the social media platform.
(Washington, DC) -- Bernie Sanders says his doctors are giving him a clean bill of health. The 78-year-old Vermont Senator released letters from three doctors pronouncing him fit and ready to serve as president. Sanders suffered a heart attack in October that briefly forced him off the campaign trail. He underwent a procedure to implant stents and appeared on stage just two weeks later at a Democratic debate. Sanders' primary physician Dr. Brian Monahan said the senator performed well on a recent treadmill test at the University of Vermont Medical Center. If elected, Sanders would be the oldest president to win the White House.
Study: Opioid Deaths Spike After Plant Closings
The Nation's 43M Caregivers are Being Honored At 2020 Rose Parade
(Undated) -- A new study finds that opioid overdose death rates are higher in communities where an automotive plant has closed. And not just a little. Researchers report the rates were 85 percent higher after five years. The study's author says the data suggests that when economic opportunities collapse, it could have negative consequences for health. Most of the counties affected were in the South and Midwest. The increase in overdose deaths was largest among white men. The study was published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine.
(Long Beach, CA) -- Our nation's 43-million caregivers are being honored at this year's 2020 Rose Parade. They'll ride on a "My Home is My Castle Float" to bring attention to the unpaid care by family members that keeps many seniors aging in place at home. They help with routine activities such as personal hygiene, shopping or transportation and 46-percent help with medical and nursing help. As many as one in three millennials, ages 25 to 40, provides unpaid care to an adult in America. The SCAN Foundation, a non-profit group based in California, puts the value of unpaid caregiving at 500-billion-dollars a year.
