By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- A local church hopes a big decision that it made to end 2019 will pay off big for the church and the community in 2020 and beyond. Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church has completed its purchase of the Seguin ISD's Juan Seguin campus. The district, earlier in the school year, decided to move forward with selling the vacant and aging building, located at 450 Dolle Street just west of the Seguin Police Station. The school was officially closed as a campus in 2010. It last served as the district's pre-k campus and was part of a list of properties that the district's facilities committee recommended should be put up for sale. The school district used a competitive sealed bid process to find a buyer for the school. Spirit of Joy's bid of $125,000 was accepted by the district in May of this year, and it has taken months for closing to occur. That process officially came to an end, with a closing on December 30.

Now that the ownership has officially been transferred over to Spirit of Joy, Elliot says there's a great deal work that still needs to be done. She says the church is eager to get started, but she knows it's going to take some time to get the renovations started. "Right now, Spirit of Joy is going to be working with architects and contractors, and getting construction plans put together. Our next couple of months is going to be working on getting all of the designs done, and all of the paperwork put together so that we can actually start doing some construction work," said Elliot.

Megan Elliot, pastor of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, says the church conducted a feasibility study once the bid was accepted, and then started working with the Seguin ISD and the city of Seguin to get the deal closed. Both governmental entities had to be involved because there were some questions on the title about who owned various portions of the property. "It was certainly a complicated process to close on this property. There were a lot of title issues that needed to be worked out. You had two public entities -- the city (of Seguin) and the school district -- trying to come to agreement on the title issues. You had a bunch of people doing research. So

Elliot says they are looking at two buildings initially that are believed to be in relatively good condition. "We are going to be focusing on the library and the auditorium on the west side of Dolle Street. We are going to be rehabbing those first, but we are also going to be focusing on the buildings on the east side to make sure that they are sealed and secure, so that they will not sustain any additional damage beyond what they already have. Our plan is to rehab the two buildings on the west side, first; and then work on getting community partners and grants and other funding sources to start working on the buildings on the east side," said Elliot. "The buildings on the east side are what we are going to focus on for community use -- in terms of putting together a museum, a community center, and a bunch of things that will hopefully benefit all of Seguin. It's going to be a multi-phase process. It's going to take us several years to get to the end of this project. We are really excited to get started. While we are waiting on all of the documents, we are going to be having some work days and doing some work ourselves. The little bit that we can do to get started. I think we are all extremely excited to get the work underway," said Elliot.

Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church currently meets in the Silver Center in downtown Seguin. According to the church's website, guests "are welcome just as you are -come and join us." The church will eventually relocate to its new home in the Juan Seguin School. An exact timetable for that move is not yet known. Meanwhile, the Seguin ISD's sale of the building is part of a strategy to rid the district of vacant buildings that in some cases sat dormant for years. Seguin ISD Superintedent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez earlier this year spoke about why the district was recommending the sale of spaces like Juan Seguin. See SOLD, page 3

“It’s no longer a facility that the district could utilize for a variety of reasons because of capacity and the amount of money we would have to put in if we were going to use it. It just wouldn’t be a facility that would hold 550-600 kids. I feel very fortunate that we have been able to receive a lot of support about this decision, and the community feels strongly about addressing our vacant facilities because they are coming at a cost, and we had a variety of input that was provided through that facilities committee -- who they represent different segments of the population. One individual

on the facilities committee even lives in that neighborhood and she provided some very valuable information as well, and we really want to show the community that we have plans to be good stewards of taxpayer’s dollars and that we are making an effort to address these vacant facilities. We will have more vacant facilities that we are looking to address later but for right now, things are looking pretty good for the Juan Seguin campus,” said Gutierrez. The former Lizzie M. Burges campus is also on the market. The campus previously served as the district's disciplinary alternative school. The program has been relocated

and is now part of the Saegert campus in downtown Seguin. That move left Burges empty, and allows the district to try to find a suitable buyer for that school as well. The Saegert campus, itself, had been vacant for years prior to the formation of the district's new facilities plan. The campus was reopened this school year with the displinary alternative education program. It now also houses the district's Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center, which had previously been housed in Oak Park Mall. The district is hosting an open house for its Saegert facility from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday. The community is encouraged to attend the event.

(Seguin) - Texas Lutheran women's basketball split a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference home games earlier this week, dropping the 2019 SCAC Championshp rematch to Trinity 60-51 on Sunday before defeating Schreiner 67-57 on Monday.

The Bulldogs were dominant in the rebound department with 41 rebounds compared to Schreiner's 26. Texas Lutheran finished the night with 15 second chance points, 11 more than Schreiner.

The Bulldogs shot 20-54 from the field in Sunday's matchup, while Trinity went 23-69.

Though the Mountaineers lost by ten, at one point they were down 22 points and made a late 12-point run to bring the game back to six points late in the fourth quarter.

Abby Hroch got into foul trouble early and played limited time, but still put up ten points and was one of two players without a negative plus-minus.

The Bulldogs finish the three-game home stand Friday with a 7:30 p.m. tip against Southwestern.

Google AI Could Improve Breast Cancer Detection

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is providing an update on the number of lung injury cases connected to e-cigarettes. The agency announced Tuesday that two-thousand-561 people have been hospitalized. Of those, 55 have passed away in more than two dozen states and Washington, DC. Every state plus two American territories have reported at lease one case. The patients range in age from 13 to 77 years old, but the majority are under 35.

(Mountain View, CA) -- A new study is showing that artificial intelligence could help improve breast cancer detection. The research published in the journal Nature found that technology developed in Google's DeepMind AI unit could identify breast cancer from mammogram images with a similar accuracy as radiologists. The A-I system also reduced the number of false positive results. Researchers credit artificial intelligence with being able to detect subtle cues that the human eye may miss.

Opponents Of AR Abortion Laws Ask For Injunction Extension (Little Rock, AR) -- Pro-choice proponents are asking a federal appeals court to keep an injunction in place preventing three Arkansas abortion laws from going into effect. A federal judge blocked the laws from taking effect while challenges worked their way through the courts. Arkansas's attorney general is fighting that injunction. One law bans doctors from performing abortions on a woman who is 18 weeks or further into the pregnancy. They also require abortion doctors be board certified or board eligible in obstetrics and gynecology and prohibits the procedure if it's due to a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome.

Sinai Health System's Data Breach Exposes Info On Thousands (Chicago, IL) -- Sinai Health System in Chicago is dealing with a data breach that may have compromised the personal information of nearly 13-thousand people. Sinai officials are telling the federal government that patients' names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers, health information or insurance information were potentially exposed. The breach happened back in October someone gained unauthorized access to two employee email accounts. Experts say there's no evidence that any of the personal information has been misused.

Mildred “Millie” Deiker

Bloomingdale, IL where they began their family life, welcoming four children into the world. While Bill traveled extensively for work, Millie raised four children and created a beautiful home each time Motorola transferred them to a new city or state. When the children were young and while still in Illinois, Millie taught Sunday School classes, volunteered with swimming lessons, served as a room mother for her children's various classrooms, and was a Cub Scout and Webelos Den Mother. She taught neighbors to sew, and sewed clothing for people who needed assistance.

Mildred “Millie” Deiker, age 82 of Seguin, passed away on Christmas morning 2019. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2020 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral services celebrating Millie’s life will be held on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Cathe Evins officiating. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center (CLC). Private burial will be held at a later date in the First United Methodist Church Columbarium in Knolle Chapel. Millie was born on June 6, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to Eugene and Amelia “Millie” (Gonsiorowski) Lukasik. She grew up in downtown Chicago with her brothers Danny and Gene, and loved their frequent trips to their grandparent’s farm in Wisconsin. Millie attended school in Chicago until her senior year of high school when her family moved to Arlington Heights, IL. She graduated high school from Arlington Heights High School after which she began working at Motorola in Franklin Park, IL. It was there that she met the love of her life, Bill Deiker. Bill and Millie were married in January of 1960, and moved to

Millie, Bill and their family moved to Seguin in 1972, where she continued her focus on her family and community. Millie led troops of Brownies and Girl Scouts for her daughters, served on several civic committees, and was a member of the local Republican Women’s Association. As an avid Bridge player, Millie belonged to several bridge clubs in Seguin with numerous long-time dear friends. Deeply involved in her church, the First United Methodist Church of Seguin, Millie was a longtime devoted member of The Sharer's Sunday School Class. Millie also volunteered for other church activities and events such as cooking dinner for the kids of the MYF, teaching Vacation Bible School, serving as Treasurer for her Sunday School class, boxing food for Angel Food Ministries, helping stock food at the Christian Cupboard, sewing costumes and other items for children’s nativity programs, volunteering in the Pumpkin Patch, serving as a church service usher, and much more. A loving mother and homemaker, Millie was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays. She loved to sew and quilt, and was also quite skilled with knitting needles. Over the years, Millie gifted her family and friends with amazing handmade sweaters, scarves, quilts, clothing items, and housewares, all of which are treasured to this day. Millie especially loved her role as “Nana” to her many grand- and great-grandchildren. Millie is preceded in death by her lov-

Tony proudly served his country in the Texas National Guard for 12 years and for 18 months in the Army Reserve. He served as Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America at a local church for 13 years, was President of Seguin Plumbing Board for eight years, and was a member of the Seguin Hermann Sons Lodge #37. Tony enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Happy Soles Square Dance Club of Seguin.
