Sales tax growth demonstrates growing economy in Seguin Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- More money continues to flow into the local economy. The city of Seguin wrapped up 2024 with a look at the sales tax data for the last few years. Finance Director Susan Caddell shared the news about the city’s growing sales tax collections during a presentation at the last meeting of the Seguin City Council. Caddell says Seguin’s sales tax growth exceeded that of most communities in this area. “Really good news on the sales tax front. (We had) a 12.46 percent increase from this time last year. You can see every month, with the exception of June, we’re up. Then you can also see in May we were up 71 percent. That’s when we got an almost $740,000 sales tax payment. Even with that big sales tax audit payment that we had, we were up 6.7 percent for

the year and we’re still ahead of from the surrounding areas that I compared us to,” said Caddell. Caddell says anyone that you look at it retail sales grow significantly in 2024. It’s another indication of the commercial growth that’s taking place in the Seguin area. “In 2024, I have it broken down by quarter. In 2024, through June -- you go back to 2021 -- and you can see that through June, we collected more than we did from 2021 for the whole year previously,” said Caddell. The sales tax collection isn’t just good news for the economy, but it also supports property taxpayers. The city of Seguin uses a portion of its sales tax to help fund the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC). It also uses a similar small portion to help ease the tax burden on local taxpayers.

The barbecue restaurant in downtown Seguin was honored with a prestigious Michelin Bib Gourmand Award. Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen shared the resolution during the council's last meeting. “Whereas, the city of Seguin takes great pride in the achievement and contributions of its local businesses, that not only support our economy, but also elevate the culinary scene. And whereas this recognition from the Michelin Guide highlights Burnt Bean Company’s dedication to culinary excellence, its ability to provide exceptional food at a great value and its warm, welcoming atmosphere that draws from people from all over who wait in line for a taste of the legendary barbecue. And whereas Burnt Bean Co. was invited to the Michelin Guide ceremony in Houston on November 11, 2024, where it was among 45 restaurants from across that were Texas recognized with the Bib Gourmand Award, an honor given to establishments that exemplify the best value for money
and that offer exceptional food in a relaxed in a relaxed setting,” said Dodgen. Dodgen says that Burnt Bean Co. continues to make Seguin a destination spot for visitors looking to try their delicious meats, sides and other creations. She says the city is proud of its accomplishments. “This recognition is a reflection of the hard work, creativity and passion of Burnt Bean Co. owners Ernest Cervantes and David Kirkland, who combined their talent in 2021 to create a restaurant that has become a beacon of culinary innovation and excellence in Seguin. And whereas Burnt Bean’s inclusion in the Michelin Guide Texas underscores the strength of our community and the importance of supporting local businesses that contribute to Seguin’s continued growth and prosperity. 2025 New Years Resolutions for Downtown Making a New Year’s Resolution to Support Downtown Seguin, Texas Special by Seguin Main Street Staff
(Seguin) -- As we welcome the new year, it’s a great time to reflect on our goals and resolutions. While personal growth and self-improvement often dominate our lists, why not consider a resolution that helps make a meaningful impact on your community? Consider making a resolution to show your support for downtown Seguin in 2025. Downtown Seguin is a historic and vibrant district that reflects the spirit and heritage of the community. From historic buildings to locally-owned shops and restaurants, it is a place that is rich in character, offering a diverse mix of activities for residents and visitors alike. However, like many small towns, Downtown Seguin faces challenges from larger shopping centers and changing economic dynamics, that’s why your continued support of downtown should be one of your New Year’s resolutions so that Seguin sense of place and identity is preserved and strengthened for generations to come. Ways to Support Downtown Seguin Making a resolution to support Downtown Seguin doesn’t mean you have to overhaul your entire lifestyle. Small changes can make a big difference, and there are many ways to get involved: 1. Shop Locally Make it a priority to buy from local retailers rather than big-box stores. Whether it’s picking up gifts, clothing, home decor, or handmade goods, local businesses rely on the support of the community to stay afloat. Many downtown stores offer unique items that you won’t find anywhere else. Some of the businesses in downtown Seguin, like Seguin Brewing Company or The Seguin Art League, provide opportunities to support the arts and local entrepreneurship. Make it a point to seek out and support these local gems. 2. Dine in Downtown Instead of opting for chain restaurants or fast food, explore the diverse culinary offerings in Seguin’s downtown area. Whether you’re in the mood for farmto-table, BBQ, Asian, pizza, bar food, or sandwiches, the local eateries in and around downtown offer delicious meals that reflect the town’s unique flavor. And when dining at places like Pecantown Books & Brews, you are not only supporting Pecantown, but local farmers, bakers, and makers who are the restaurant’s suppliers. 3. Attend Local Events Seguin’s downtown district hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from the popular Pecan Fest to

artisan markets and community parades. These events provide entertainment, celebrate local culture, and bring the community together. Make it a resolution to participate in these events, whether by volunteering, attending with family and friends, or simply enjoying the festivities. 4. Support Local Arts and History Downtown Seguin is home to the Seguin Heritage Museum where they are working hard to preserve Seguin’s history. Downtown Seguin is also home to numerous art organizations and businesses like the Seguin Art League, You’re So Crafty, the Texas Theatre, and the Palace Theater. These cultural institutions provide rich insights into the city’s history and showcase the talents of local artists. Take time to visit these locations, support exhibits, and even consider purchasing a piece of local art to help sustain the arts scene. 5. Share Your Experiences Word of mouth is a powerful tool in supporting local businesses. Share your experiences on social media, write positive reviews, and recommend your favorite spots to friends and family. By promoting Downtown Seguin, you are helping to raise awareness of its offerings and encouraging others to explore. In conclusion, as you think about your resolutions for this new year, consider how you can contribute to the future of Seguin’s downtown. By making a commitment to shop, dine, and support local, you’re not just making a positive impact on the businesses you visit, but on the community as a whole. Every action, no matter how small, helps keep Seguin a vibrant, thriving place to live, work, and play. This year, make a resolution that matters – support Downtown Seguin and help ensure that this historic area continues to thrive for generations to come.

China Urged To Share COVID Data (Undated) -- The World Health Organization is urging China to share its coronavirus data related to the start of the pandemic. The organization in a statement this week says without transparency, sharing, and co-operation among countries, the world cannot adequately prevent and prepare for future epidemics and pandemics. Some scientists think COVID transferred from animals to humans, but others suspect it escaped from a laboratory in China. China in the past has rejected the lab theory. The country has not responded to the World Health Organization’s request. Exercise Study Shows Short Intense Exercises Are Good (Undated) -- A new study shows just a small amount of intense exercise can lower a person’s risk for a major adverse cardiovascular event. Researchers at the University of Sydney say just one and a half to four minutes of high intensity exercise throughout the day can lower that risk. Examples of that include going up stairs and carrying in the groceries. Sydney Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis calls the findings significant because he says it represents a much lower amount of physical activity than any current exercise related recommendation and is easier for many people to incorporate it into their daily routine. The study was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The Cleveland Clinic Offers Tips To Keep Health Goals (Undated) -- The Cleveland Clinic is offering tips to try and achieve health goals being set for the new year. Dietitian for the Cleveland Clinic Kristin Kirkpatrick says folks should get very specific on a health goal because studies on New Year’s resolutions show the more general the health goal being set, the less likely it will be achieved. An example of this she says is instead of saying you’ll eat better, say have a vegetable with each meal. Kirkpatrick says to keep the health goals realistic and that people don’t have to immediately overhaul their diet but instead start with simple food swaps. Study Shows Estrogen Linked To Women Binge Drinking (Undated) -- A study shows the female hormone estrogen can prompt women to consume a large amount of alcohol. Researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine say their data published in Nature Communications could spur different approaches for treating alcohol use disorder. The study indicates estrogen causes women to “pre-game,” making them drink large amounts in the first half-hour after the alcohol is offered. Researcher and Professor Kristen Pleil says the study shows what might be the first explanation for sex related differences in binge drinking. The study involved researchers serving alcohol to lab mice while they tracked their estrogen levels.
