Vandals damage “Wendy the Squirrel” at Seguin City Hall

(Seguin) — The city’s Squirrel Trail public art display has suffered its first major blow.

The Seguin Police Department is investigating a criminal mischief case in which vandals damaged the Wendy the Squirrel statue on Thursday, January 2. The statue is located outside of Seguin City Hall in the 200 block of North River Street.

The statue isn’t just one of many pieces of art that make up the Squirrel Trail, but it’s also a symbol of community and it was commissioned in remembrance of Wendy Parker, the late wife of Seguin City Manager Steve Parker. Wendy Parker died in November 2023, and the statue which carries her name was unveiled just a couple of months ago.

Steve Parker posted a message about the situation on his Facebook page.

“While it is extremely disappointing that such a beautiful piece of art was damaged through a kindless act of vandalism, I can assure you that the

beauty and joy that this art program has brought to the people of Seguin will not be tarnished. The squirrel donated by the friends and family of our cherished Wendy was built out of love, generosity and kindness. Our squirrel art program has been so well received and has brought so many families closer together. That is what this program is about. A random act of vandalism will not tarnish the fabric of this community because the true citizens of Seguin have a true respect and love for this community like nothing I have ever seen. I am so proud to call Seguin my home,” wrote Steve Parker.

The police department has released photos from a surveillance camera in the area.

You can also see the images on our website, seguintoday.com or on our KWED Facebook page.

If you recognize any of the individuals in the photo or if you have helpful information in the case, you’re asked to contact the Seguin PD at 830379-2123.

Main Street releases its 2025 downtown calendar of events

(Seguin) -- Downtown Seguin will be active all year long with a full event calendar ensuring you have a reason to come downtown every month. This includes large community events celebrating Seguin’s rich heritage and monthly markets supporting local home-based entrepreneurs.

Central Park will be the spot for the monthly Yellow Rose Artisan Markets occurring every second Sunday and Fourth Saturday of the month. The markets feature over 40 vendors selling handmade goods, homemade foods, and artwork.

The themed, monthly Third Thursdays hosted by the Downtown Business Alliance of Seguin are an opportunity to explore and shop downtown Seguin late as the businesses stay open until 8 p.m. Each month is a different theme, such as May’s Margarita Madness, to give a little bit more fun to the monthly shopping event.

Every Saturday, Austin Street Market sets up at 414 North Austin Street. The market is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and features a variety of vendors including farmers, artists, and crafters.

In addition to the reoccurring monthly events and markets, downtown will be the site for numerous community festivals, parades, and events. These events bring together the community to celebrate holidays, our culture, and more.

Four parades are scheduled for 2025 including the Biggest Small-Town Fourth of July Parade on July 4, the Guadalupe County Fair Parade on Oct 10, the Veteran’s Day Parade on Nov 11, and the Holiday Stroll Parade on Dec 4.

Other community events to ensure that are on your calendar are MLK March, Moonlight & Roses, Spring Trade Days and Earth Day Festival, Race to Raise, Cinco de Mayo, Summer Concert Series, Pecan Fest, Art & Wine Walk, and Sip n’ Stroll.

The first event in Central Park for 2025 will be the MLK March on January 20. The march starts at TLU and ends in Central Park with a small program celebrating Dr. King’s legacy.

GHN expanding healthcare access for military families

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Healthcare Network (GHN) has announced the completion of a new contract amendment with TriWest Healthcare Alliance (TriWest), that will allow TRICARE beneficiaries to access its payer agreement, effective January 1, 2025.

GHN previously entered an agreement with TriWest to serve and participate in the Veteran’s CCN network in 2021, but will now include the TRICARE Program. TRICARE beneficiaries include: Active duty, National Guard and Reserve, Retired and Retired Reserve service members, eligible family members, survivors, children and former spouses.

GHN CEO, Deana Henk says this is good news for military families in the region.

“We are pleased to expand access to our military families in 2025. We have been working for many years to complete a TRICARE agreement, but have now found great partners in TriWest and CHRISTUS Health Plan in order to serve these brave men and women and their families,” said Henk.

TriWest will become the TRICARE West Region contractor on January 1, 2025 and will replace Health Net Federal Services, LLC as the administrator. The TRICARE West Region includes 26 states, including Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Louisiana.

While many of the contracted providers with TRICARE will automatically be assigned to the TriWest networks, GHN’s new contract will create additional access to its hospital and physician members for TRICARE beneficiaries. GHN is a physician hospital organization

that facilitates managed care contracts on behalf of its members. GHN’s hospitals include Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, Connally Memorial Medical Center, Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital and over 340 Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers in Guadalupe, Comal, Hays, Wilson, and Karnes counties.

All three GHN hospitals will be included in the new TRICARE provider network and many of GHN’s physician practices have agreed to participate. TriWest is currently adding GHN providers to its directories and claims systems, and additional GHN practices may also be added over time. GHN also holds a contract with CHRISTUS Health Plan for TRICARE coverage under the US Family Health Plan, which is managed separately from TriWest.

For more information on GHN, its network of providers, or this new agreement, please contact the GHN office at (830) 303-4846.

Events, continued.

Moonlight & Roses on April 4 will feature jazz music in the Memorial Rose Garden, complimentary deserts, and the presentation of the 2024 downtown and art awards.

Downtown will be busy on April

26 as it hosts the Race to Raise and the Spring Trade Days & Earth Day Festival. The race supports Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation and takes runners from downtown to Starcke Park and back. As the runners make their way back to downtown, they will find over 30 Earth Day exhibitors and 80 trade

day vendors educating about green living and selling all sorts of products.

LULAC Council 682 will be hosting its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration on May 2 and 3. The event features live music, vendors, and the celebration of the Mexican heritage.

The Central Park Summer Concert Series will return for live music every Sunday in June. Come enjoy local bands perform.

Pecan Fest on October 25 is a celebration of our famous nut and our agricultural heritage. Over 100 vendors will be set up with many selling pecan products.

Our holiday season will be kicked off with the Holiday Stroll that includes a parade, cocoa, a 5K, kids activities, and Santa! The 2025 dates are December 4 – 6.

Be sure to check the calendar of events at www.visitseguin.com to stay informed about these events and more as they are added to the calendar. See you in downtown Seguin in 2025!

Seguin Matadors hand Highlands first district loss with impressive win

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matadors took down the top team in District 27-5A in convincing fashion on Friday afternoon at Goldie Harris Gym.

The Mats steamrolled the San Antonio Highlands Owls, 60-38. Seguin never trailed in the game in sending Highlands to their first district defeat in seven games.

Junior Corey Dailey had the hot hand early for the Mats burying three threepointers in the first quarter to finish the stanza with 13 points as the Matadors built an 18-15 lead after the first eight minutes. Seguin would push their lead to six at halftime, 29-23 led by Dailey’s 17.

After a slow start in the third quarter, the Matadors would build on their lead. With just a 32-31 lead near the mid-point of the third, the Matadors took control thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Cameron Juarez-Bruns that extended the Seguin lead to seven. The senior Juarez-Bruns would drop in 12 of his 14 points in the game in the second half helping Seguin put away the Owls with a 28-7 run over the game’s final 12 minutes.

Matador head coach Guy Nowlin lauded the effort of Juarez-Bruns following the victory.

“Right there at the end of the game I told him, ‘that was the best game you played all year’. He’s had kind of a bit rocky go at it, but today he stepped up. He played well on the defensive end also.”

Dailey led all scorers with 26 points. Tavien Miles and Colton Saengerhausen each had six points while Jordan Miller poured in five for the Mats. Seguin improved to 4-2 in district play with Friday’s impressive win. The Matadors will next host San Antonio Burbank on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Rebeka Wilke paced the Lady Mats with 11 points. Seguin finished the first half of the district season with an even 4-4 record. The Lady Matadors will play at San Antonio Burbank on Tuesday night.

(San Antonio) -- On the girls side in San Antonio, Highlands snapped Seguin’s four-game district winning streak as the Lady Owls dropped the Lady Matadors, 43-28.

Broccoli Recalled In 20 States

(San Diego, CA) -- A bunch of broccoli is now under recall. These are bags of Marketside ready-to-eat broccoli florets sold at Walmart. The FDA says they may be contaminated with Listeria in about 20 states. Listeria can cause severe illness, especially in little kids, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and belly issues. All the bags are marked with a “best if used by date, December 10, 2024”, however, some families may have them in the freezer and need to toss them out or get a refund.

Experts: Don’t Start Too Fast To Lose Weight

(Undated) -- Getting in shape and losing weight comes out on top for New Year’s Resolutions. Healthy living experts warn not to bite off more than you can chew, and to “start slow” by building up your exercise routine instead of jumping into tough workouts. Just getting on a treadmill or walking for 20 minutes, at least three times a week, is a great place to start. A “U.S. News and World Report” study shows about 80-percent of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. Experts says that’s largely due to unrealistic goals.

Exercise Study Shows Short Intense Exercises Is Good

(Undated) -- A new study shows just a small amount of intense exercise can lower a person’s risk for a major adverse cardiovascular event. Researchers at the University of Sydney say just one and a half to four minutes of high intensity exercise throughout the day can lower that risk. Examples of that include going up stairs and carrying in the groceries. Sydney Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis calls the findings significant because he says it represents a much lower amount of physical activity than any current exercise related recommendation and is easier for many people to incorporate it into their daily routine. The study was published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

New Rules For Dispensaries Help Feed The Munchies

(San Francisco, CA) -- One of the new California laws that’s now in effect allows marijuana dispensaries to make and sell food, turning them into Amsterdam-style cannabis cafés. The legislation was pushed by San Francisco Democratic Assemblyman Matt Haney who tells FOX News that people looking to get high can now hang out at dispensaries like you would at a bar. Opponents, though, are concerned about the health effects of secondhand smoke.
