(Seguin) -- The city of Seguin is moving forward with its plans to install a public restroom facility in Central Park. The Seguin City Council recently approved the purchase of the structure that will house the restrooms. In preparation for that installation, the council last week hired a local contractor to handle the site prep work inside the park.
Kyle Kramm, Main Street and CVB Director, says the public restrooms in downtown Seguin have been needed for a long time. He says they are excited about the upcoming installation.
“At the December 3rd, 2024 City Council meeting, we awarded a contract to Restroom Facilities Limited to actually purchase the building that would be the downtown restrooms. And so, we are continuing that process of getting things ready for that site when the restrooms come in,” said Kramm.
The city is eager to get the restrooms installed, but Kramm says the site prep
needs to take place first.
“These are things like the ADA access, the site permit, grading the site, as well as compacting the soil for the building when it comes, and lots of other items that will be required for the site,” said Kramm.
The city is hiring Sullivan Contracting Services to handle all the site work that needs to be done, so that the restrooms can be installed.
“We received a quote from Sullivan Contracting Services, a Choice Partners Purchasing Cooperative member, for $136,809.57. This project did come in a little over what we had anticipated, so we already approved...a budget adjustment using ARPA funds to make up that difference of about $70,000,” said Kramm.
Accessible and clean public restrooms have been on a wish-list of items for downtown Seguin for decades. Kramm says the current public restrooms in the downtown area are limited.

(Seguin) -- Three well-known leaders from across the area will take to the stage at this year’s MLK Banquet in Seguin. The banquet is the only paid event during the five-day celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The fund-raising event begins at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in the Seguin Coliseum, with a social time slated for 4 p.m.
MLK Planning Committee Member Regina Lee says they have a solid line-up of speakers for this year’s event. Guest speakers include Katie Cunningham, Cibolo City Councilwoman; George Green, former New Braunfels City Councilman; and Michael Hart, Pastor of Spirit Filled Family Church in Schertz.
Lee says each speaker will bring a special message to those who attend the banquet.
“Every year, we try to do a little something new. This year, we’re going to speak on hope, love and unity, and we have three guest speakers doing that. They will not speak for 30 minutes each, I promise,” said Lee.
The Seguin MLK Day Planning Committee boasts one of the largest MLK celebrations in the state. This year, Lee says they made an effort to invite more people from outside of Seguin to the event, especially those from other parts of Guadalupe County.
“So, we are trying to not only do the city now, but we’re also trying to encompass the county and we even stole out of the next county, and we just borrowed George Green for the night,” said Lee.
Committee members are encouraging people
to take note of the start times. They say that the banquet actually begins at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Coliseum, but they will open the doors as early as 4 p.m. for people to socialize. Cheese and crackers will be served during the social hour, with dinner served once the banquet starts.
Tickets for the MLK Banquet are $50 each and that includes a full meal during the event. Lee says its a reasonable price to pay when you consider the quality of this year’s line-up of speakers. Tickets can be purchased online at https://tinyurl.com/mwsmm9ed.
All other MLK events are free. The nearly week long celebration begins on Thursday with a church service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church. The church service is sponsored by the Baptist Minister’s Union. Friday’s schedule includes the Segin ISD’s Musical Showcase in the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center, and the Black Entreprenuer’s Network in Tschoepe Hall at Texas Lutheran University. Both events begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. In addition to the banquet, Saturday’s schedule also includes “Story Time” at Pecan Town Books & Brews, starting at 10 a.m. A Gospel Fest, featuring the Seguin Community Choir and others, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in TLU’s Wupperman Little Theater. The festivities end with the annual MLK Day Freedom March. The march begins at 10 a.m. along Prexy Drive at TLU. The march will travel down West Court Street down to Central Park for the start of the MLK Day Program.
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Sunrise Rotary Club wants you to save the date for its big Pre-Super Bowl Bash. The event is the club’s big fundraiser, and it’s slated for Saturday, February 8th at the Big Red Barn.
Rotarian Heather Felty says it’s had a few different names, but one thing remains the same -- it will be a great night that you don’t want to miss.
“We have rotated through fundraisers. Last year, I think we pretty much found a hit. We had such a great time, and around this pre-Super Bowl time kind of give it a nice little buzz and fun time for gaming. We had laughs, raffles, game-game-games, amazing
food, and fun times. All to support scholarships in the Seguin and Navarro area,” said Felty.
Tickets and table sponsorships are currently available via the Sunrise Rotary Club’s Facebook page, or you can call Rotarian Dennis Clarkson at 210-834-1240.
continued.
The new restroom facility will be located at the northeast corner of Central Park, which should keep it from interfering with the flow of special events that are held in the park.
The restrooms will be ADA-
compliant and will include several features aimed at enhancing accessibility and convenience for visitors. These include stainless steel fixtures, baby-changing and adult-changing stations, and a high-tech operating system that will help to maintain and secure the restrooms.
The restroom facility will have a brick veneer to match the architectural style of downtown Seguin. The design will feature a flat roof with a cornice and an awning over the restroom entrances, in an attempt to also match the characteristics of many of buildings in the downtown area.
SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team (10-2, 4-0 SCAC) never trailed and held on down the stretch to upset No. 24/25 Colorado College (11-2, 3-1 SCAC) 76-65 Sunday afternoon. It is the first ranked win at Texas Lutheran for head coach Troy Patterson and the first ranked win for Texas Lutheran since defeating 12th-ranked Trinity in 2017.
The 10-2 start is the best in the program’s NCAA history as the Bulldogs begin SCAC play 4-0 for the first time since 2019. Also with the win, head coach Troy Patterson became the fastest coach to 60 wins in program history, surpassing Lana Urbanek and Mel Dixon.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures in the ranked eleven-point win, led by 19 points from Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) on five made field goal attempts and shooting 8-of-10 from the line. Sansano would add four rebounds and four steals in addition to dishing out a career-high seven assists.
Angelina Sotelo (San Marcos/San Marcos) finished with 15 points and matched her career-high with six assists. Elexis Morado (Kingsville/Santa Gertrudis Academy) and Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/
Los Fresnos) finished with 12 points each with the 12 point total being a new career-high for Morado while Jones would grab a team-high nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs started fast, jumping out to an early 13-4 advantage behind tough defense and efficient offense. Texas Lutheran converted on four of its first six attempts of the afternoon. The Bulldogs led by as many as ten in the opening frame, and they took a 2012 edge into the second period, aided by eight points from Sarahi Jones.
The Tigers offense came alive in the second quarter but the Bulldogs offense was able to keep the Tigers at-bay, outscoring them 19-17 in the period. Lauren Sansano took over in the second quarter scoring nine of the Bulldogs 19 points in the quarter as the Bulldogs were able to stretch their lead to as many as 15 points and carry a ten point, 39-29, lead into halftime.
TLU kept their foot on the gas in the third quarter, outscoring Colorado College 17-15 to take a 12 point lead into the fourth. After a quiet first half, Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led the Bulldogs in the third with five of her seven points on the afternoon. The Bulldogs largest lead of the day
would come in the period leading the Tigers by 18 points before a combination of free throws and three pointers whittled the TLU lead down to 12.
Although Colorado College outscored Texas Lutheran in the final quarter of play, the Bulldogs still cemented the double-digit win. Texas Lutheran would only turn the ball over six times on Sunday while forcing 18 Colorado College turnovers. The Bulldogs would also shoot 87.5 percent from the line (14-16). The wireto-wire win is their third in their last four games.
The Bulldogs will look to keep the momentum going as they begin a four game road trip starting on Friday, Jan. 17, with a trip to Clarksville, Arkansas, to face the University of the Ozarks Eagles. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Los Angeles County residents are being urged to stay indoors as much as possible as several large wildfires continue to burn. Officials with the South Coast Air Quality Management District say, if people must be outside, they should wear a P100 respirator or properly fitting N95 mask. Air quality levels remain in the unhealthy to hazardous range across the region.
(New York, NY) -- With winter weather ramping up in many parts of the country bringing frigid temps and biting winds, pediatricians are offering tips for keeping the little ones warm. Dressing your child in layers to trap heat and allow flexibility as temperatures change throughout the day is key. Doctors suggest a moisture-wicking fabric as the base layer to keep sweat off kids skin, an insulating material like fleece or wool for the middle, and a waterproof and wind-resistant jacket to protect against the elements. Doctors say keeping those extremities covered with hats, mittens and insulated-waterproof boots, is also essential since children lose heat quickly through their heads, hands and feet.
(Undated) -- Overdose deaths in the United States are rapidly outpacing other countries. A new report from the Commonwealth Fund discovered the U.S. has the highest rate of overdoses out of 30 other developed countries like Canada, Scotland, Iceland, Sweden, Japan, and more. The U.S. has 324 overdose deaths per one million people.
(New Orleans, LA) -- A new study suggests there are health benefits to drinking coffee -- but only if you drink it in the morning. Researchers led by a team from Tulane University in New Orleans found that morning coffee drinkers were more than 30-percent less likely to die from heart disease than people who don’t drink coffee. But there was no reduction in risk for people who drank coffee at all hours. The study was published in the European Heart Journal.
