SISD steps up to the plate for a second at bat District orders $7.3 million bond issue for sports complex this May

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is taking another swing at getting a new baseball/softball complex built on the high school campus.

It was just over two months ago when local voters turned down a $7.5 million bond issue for the sports complex. Now following action on Tuesday, the school board is returning with another attempt for the same complex – an attempt that will go before voters on Saturday, May 6.

Explaining why the school district felt it needed to give it another go was Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez.

“There were a lot of bonds that failed in November. We were very fortunate that our Proposition A passed and I’m very thankful and grateful for the community’s support.

Seguin ISD trustee shares details behind decision to resign

(Seguin) -- A resignation is coming to the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees.

Seguin ISD School Board member Cinde Thomas-Jimenez says she’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

That response was made after folks were surprised to learn that she would be stepping down early from the school board.

On Tuesday, Thomas-Jimenez was given the opportunity to share her thoughts about her decision.

“I just want ya’ll to know, I did not win the lottery and I am not terminally ill. I’m just retiring from my job in July and my husband and I have purchased a home in another state. We are going to be making our way in that direction and so it took me a long time to decide that I was going to leave this board because I

feel very strongly about all the work that we have done. I have been here for six and a half years. At any rate, I just wanted to let you all know that the board has discussed this and they have some options looking forward to finding a replacement. I’m not leaving tomorrow. I’m not leaving next month. It’s going to be a few months down the road. I just wanted to be able to discuss it with the board and I

“...or not they would support a baseball/softball facility. I think it was the largest bond in Seguin ISD’s history. There was a lot that that bond package entailed -- safety and security, a new McQueeney Elementary, Ag/ Science facility, Barnes expansion and the list goes on. So, you are limited in the amount of emphasis on any one part of that bond package. This would allow an opportunity to solely focus on that one facility keeping in mind that we do not have a baseball facility of our own -- most districts do,” said Gutierrez.

Perhaps one of the most important components of bringing the item back on the ballot is that the complex, if approved by voters in May, would come with NO tax increase. Hopefully, Gutierrez says this would allow voters to seriously consider the new turfed fields and help the district finally complete all the facilities for the high school campus.

“I know we had conversations years ago about some possibilities but a lot has changed in the last four and five years when you look at the cost of construction as well as just the way that the economy is and we had discussions and possibilities of looking at fund balance. Well the cost of building a facility like this continues to rise and I can’t imagine what the cost will be in a year or two or three down the road and if we get to a place where we do it in phases, well, who gets priority? Is it boys or is it girls? And so, we

Thanking Thomas-Jimenez for her service on the board was Board Secretary Linda Duncan.

“Cinde, we owe you a debt of gratitude for all that you brought to this board and especially for stepping up in a time that was tumultuous in taking the reins and I personally want you to know that we are better off because of your leadership so thank you!” said Duncan.

Trustees met behind closed doors to discuss the resignation and options for replacing Jimenez.

Now without raising the tax rate, district officials say they are still able to generate enough in tax collections to pay the debt that would be associated with the $7.5 million. “...actually collected more in terms of tax than what we needed and we used those dollars to buy down debt. When we buy down debt, that actually gives us more capacity. We have less debt to pay and therefore that coupled with the fact when we do a refinance, you wouldn’t do that unless your annual requirement would be going down and so that’s what we’ve taken advantage of,” said Hillberg.

Dr. Gutierrez says the complex itself would not only serve the students but would be a great asset to the community as a whole. The potential to host tournaments and other events make the fields a great investment.

“Part of the data that we want to try to get in partnership with the city’s economic development is just the impact that it is having on our economy. As we have now stated with the art facilities and we are able to host statewide or regional events whether it’s for fine arts or athletics, it is certainly having an impact on not only our district but on our local economy. But having a facility like this would allow us the opportunity to host different tournaments as well and even to look at expanding. There’s been a very strong interest in expanding the baseball/softball to the middle school. There have certainly been some limitations and in an effort to be competitive, you want to start to develop those skills early on and a lot of our students don’t have the opportunity to start in a Little League. Those things cost. It could expand opportunities for more students but we would certainly look at using this facility to host our own events for our students which we struggle to do,” said Gutierrez.

Seguin ISD Athletic Director Craig Dailey was also on hand Tuesday night to talk about the struggles of the district not having its own baseball field. He says a player on average spends 40 minutes a day traveling to and from the city-owned Smokey Joe Field at the Seguin Events Complex. He also provided the team’s struggle earlier that day when kids during the sunshine were bused to Barnes Middle School because the fields were wet. He says not only did they have to practice indoors but parents had to work through the trouble of going and picking them up after practice. On top of the inconvenience of having to go off campus to play ball, he says both the baseball and softball fields are in horrible condition. District officials say even some teams dislike having to come to Seguin because of the fields and the danger that they pose for their players.

The decision to call for the bond election was unanimous. District officials say the campaign for the new baseball/softball complex will get heavy as the weeks continue. Additional information is expected to be made available soon on the district’s website.

Thursday sports recap

Dunn

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Matador boys basketball team picked up another district win on Tuesday with a 59-53 victory over Kerrville Tivy. The Matadors outscored Tivy 23-15 in the first quarter and never trailed from there. Matador junior John Jackson led all scorers with 23 points. With the win, the Matadors are now 4-4 in district play, and 18-8 overall. The Matadors will host Wagner on Friday night.

(Seguin) -- The Lady Matadors were held scoreless in the first quarter of Tuesday night’s game en route to a 50-28 road loss to Kerrville Tivy. Seguin’s Jazmine Missildine scored 14 points for the Lady Mats, but there wasn’t enough offense to overcome the slow start. The Lady Mats are back on action on Friday night when they play at Wagner.

(San Antonio) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers on Tuesday earned a dominate road win over San Antonio Davenport. Navarro outscored Davenport 33-21 in the second half, and cruised to a 52-37 victory. The game was actually tight after the first two quarters of play, and Navarro had just a four point lead going into halftime, but they would would pick up the scoring the rest of hte way. The Lady Panthers got 23 points from Tatum Harborth and 16 points from Tegan Harborth in the victory. The Lady Panthers improve their district record to 6-3.

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro boys basketball team is still searching for its first district win, following a 64-53 loss on Tuesday to Davenport. The

Panthers fall to 0-7 in district play, and have an overall record of 6-12.

(Marion) -- The Marion Lady Bulldogs were slated to play a non-district game last night against San Marcos Home School, but no results have yet been reported for that contest.

(Marion) -- The Marion boys were off on Tuesday, but they return to action on Friday night with a 7:30 matchup against Great Hearts Monte Vista in San Antonio. The Bulldogs currently have an overall record of 1214, and are 2-4 in district play.

(Seguin) -- The TLU men’s basketball team returns to action on Friday with a game against St. Thomas in Houston. That game tips at 8 p.m. and can be heard live at tlubulldogs.com. The Bulldogs are coming off a tough 70-68 loss to Austin College on Saturday night in Seguin.

(Seguin) -- The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team will also be on the road in Houston on Friday night. The Bulldogs will take on St. Thomas, with a tip slated for 6 p.m. The TLU women currently have a record of 10-8, and they are 6-4 in conference play. That record includes two straight wins, including Saturday night’s 71-42 blowout victory over Austin College in Memorial Gymnasium in Seguin. Edna Juanita “Nita” Henry, age 86 of Seguin, passed away on January, 20, 2023. Edna was born on November 12, 1936 in Freer, Texas to Joseph William Butler and Mabel Ethel (Teague).

Edna is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roland J. Henry Sr. (RJ); brothers J.C. Butler, Jimmy Roy Butler and sister Margie Butler.

Survivors include her sons, Happy Henry and wife Millie, Scott Henry and wife Marilyn; grandchildren Denise Lyssy and husband Brian, Anthony Henry, Brooke Lakey and husband Corey, and Boone Henry; great-grandchildren, Tenley Lyssy and Willow Lakey; other loving family members and friends. Nita met her husband RJ at the Peppertree Cafe in Seguin, Texas

where she was a waitress. They were married on August 20, 1955. Nita and RJ enjoyed dancing to country music their favorite songs being Waltz Across Texas and Silver Wings. Over the years Nita was known for many talents. She was a hairdresser in New Braunfels, a Pink Lady at New Braunfels Hospital and a den mother for the Boy Scouts. She enjoyed raising animals and was known for raising exotic birds for over 40 years. Her and RJ raised their two boys and cattle on Henry Hills Ranch in Kingsbury, Texas.

Irene Sophia Schwab Fletcher has taken her wings and gone home to her heavenly Father at the age of 85 years old. Beloved Mother, Sister, Grandmother, Great Grandmother took her flight home on January 21, 2023. She was born August 1, 1937 in Tardea Hills, Wilson County, Texas to Gilbert Schwab and Pauline Krueger Schwab.

Irene was baptized on September 12, 1937. Irene was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Karnes City, Texas on July 5, 1953 by Arnold J. Thrig.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert Schwab and Pauline Krueger Schwab Holtz; son, Gilbert Henry Fletcher; sons-in-law, Bob Archer and David Bunton; grandson, Derrick Bunton; granddaughter, Grace Fletcher Radley; great granddaughter, Emma Grace Sparkman; sisters, Lois Samsel/Harry Samsel, Ruth Wittig/ Alvin Wittig; sister-in-law, Carrie Ann Schwab and brothers-in-law Henry Pape and Tony Pawlik.

Josefina “Josie” Ybarra Castro was called Home to be with the Lord on January 23, 2023 at the age of 73. She was born on August 27, 1949 in Seguin, Texas to Ricardo Ibarra and Maria Cruz Aguero.

Josie was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She enjoyed going out with her sisters and spending time with family especially with her grandchildren. She enjoyed collecting knickknacks and listening to music. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Beverly Yvonne Vradenburg

French, age 95 of Seguin passed away on January 15, 2023. Beverly was the 5th child born to Clifford & Gertrude (Hutchinson) Vradenburg in Webb City, MO on December 31, 1927. She had 3 older brothers and 1 sister who have all preceded her in death. The family moved to Texas in 1937. She graduated from Edison High School and joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1944, and began her nurses training at Medical & Surgical Memorial Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She graduated in 1947 as a Registered Nurse at the age of 19.

Beverly married Harold (Hud) French August 30, 1947 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, San Antonio, Texas. They lived briefly in California and Oregon but returned to Texas to make their home. They enjoyed 55 years of marriage until Hud’s death in 2002. They were active members of Concordia Lutheran Church for many years. They were blessed with 2 daughters, Randi Fowler (who preceded her in death) and Cindie Kidwell; 4 grandchildrenMichael, Barbara, Lisa (Ron) and Stephen (Autumn); 9 great-grandchildrenJeremy, Stephanie, Allen-Michael, Dylan, Ryan, Kaylee, Savannah, Sawyer and Tate; and 3 great-great-grandchildren- Leland, Brock and Beverly; former son-in-law and friend, Michael Stehling; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and many friends; and her 2 sons-in-law, John Fowler and Kenneth Kidwell (both of whom preceded her in death).

Beverly worked at BAMC in the operating room where she was the Head Nurse of the Cardio-Thoracic Service for many years. She retired from BAMC (the same day Hud retired from the Academy of Health Services) January 1, 1988 after 22 years.

Beverly was an outgoing, loving, Christian person who enjoyed life. She loved traveling, which she did often. Her family was important to her and she spent many happy times with them. She was strong in her faith and knew she was a child of the Lord. Beverly and her daughters moved to Seguin after Hud’s death and she became active at First Baptist Church of Seguin.

FDA Changes Strategy On COVID-19 Vaccines

(Washington, DC) -- The FDA is changing the COVID-19 vaccine process. In documents shared online, the agency said the process could follow a similar format to the flu vaccine. That would possibly include streamlining vaccine composition, immunization schedules, and updates on COVID-19 vaccines as more information becomes available. The FDA said it will likely assess strains of the coronavirus at least annually and decide in June which to select for the fall season, a process that’s taken while assessing annual flu vaccines.

Hochul Highlights Statewide Lead Remediation Plan

(Rochester, NY) -- New York Governor Kathy Hochul is highlighting statewide plans to ensure children aren’t exposed to lead poisoning at home. The governor has proposed all rental properties built before 1980 be inspected for lead paint. She also promised to fiscally help landlords create safe conditions and provide staff for local health departments to roll out and enforce the program. Hochul laid out her plans in Rochester, calling it an example for the rest of New York since Rochester has been working for years to reduce lead paint exposure.

King County Morgue Filled With Overdose Victims

(Seattle, WA) -- The spike in overdose deaths in Washington State has the King County morgue exceeding capacity. Last year, the county had one-thousand-17 overdose deaths which is a 43-percent increase over 2021. Fentanyl is the leading cause of overdose deaths. Public Health Seattle & King County says people think they’re taking prescription pills or cocaine, but it’s laced with deadly fentanyl. When the morgue is full and there’s a backlog for autopsies, the deceased wait on gurneys or at funeral homes that have agreements with the county.

BYU To Pay Students For Trying Snacks

(Provo, UT) -- Brigham Young University in Utah is looking to hire students to taste food. The Food Sensory Lab at BYU is asking students to taste different snacks and treats and share their thoughts. Manager Amanda Rees told FOX 13 the lab uses the feedback to adjust recipes or even recreate a competitor’s product. Participants get between five and 20-dollars per panel.
