Performance of Seguin City Manager gets high praise, increase in salary Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Seguin City Manager Steve Parker received a huge vote of confidence from the Seguin City Council on Tuesday. The council voted unanimously to provide Parker with a pay raise and offered him some additional benefits after conducting his annual evaluation in executive session. Councilwoman Monica Carter explained the council’s wishes just prior to the formal vote on his performance. “I would like to make the motion on behalf of the city council. We would like to
make the following recommendation -- a 2.5 percent merit increase totaling $298,080.51 which is an increase of $7,2070.26 to your current base pay. We’d also like to recommend a one time incentive payment of $10,000 and a much needed 20 additional hours of personal leave which will bring your total annual personal leave hours to 80 hours or two weeks,” said Carter. The council gushed about Parker’s performance over the last year. Parker, pg. 3

It’s Showtime
Showcase Seguin returns tonight to Seguin Coliseum, event is Free Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce is planning to have fun and all while doing business at this year’s Showcase Seguin 2024 Business Expo. The event showcasing the goods and services of Seguin businesses will open its doors today rom 5 to 7 p.m. at the Seguin Coliseum. Excited about this year’s event is Chamber President Chester Jenke. Jenke says the showcase is one of their most successful ways of connecting local businesses with customers. “Showcase Seguin is an event that allows our Seguin Chamber members to come out and show what they have. So, we will have about 40 vendors or 40 businesses that are represented, four food booths. There will be some refreshments as well that are available. The bottom line is they are showing Seguin what they have
in Seguin so they don’t have to leave town to go shop,” said Jenke. The showcase, however, is not all business. Chester says the addition of a theme each year, transforms the event into a whole lot of fun. “The theme this year is Business in Toyland so each of the booths will have a Toyland spin to them if you will. We’ve got some celebrity judges. They are going to be walking around, judging each of the booths so that’s always kind of a fun thing. They’ll build their booths and we will say that there are some that are very very competitive and then, we have those other ones that are competitive if you will. So, it’s kind of neat to see the way that they build their booths up and again, there will be some contests that take place as well and those contests, the answers will be provided to you by those folks that
are in the booths. So, it ought to be a good evening,” said Jenke. Most importantly, Chester says there is not cost to attend. He says the event is entirely free. “It’s grown each year and a couple of years ago, we made this a free event for the public. Instead of having a charge to go in to see what’s in Seguin, we just wanted to show off what Seguin has got. So, we made it a free event. But they do have to have a ticket so they need to register online and they can do that at the seguinchamber.com and it’s on the front page. Just click on, Showcase Seguin, and it will take you to the registration page and as I said, it’s free to register. Free entry but you have to register,” said Jenke. Again the event is free but registration is required by visiting seguinchamber.com.

Parker, continued. Councilman Jason Biesenbach expressed his gratitude to Parker, and said that he believed that he’s doing a great job. “Steve I just think you’re doing a really good job. I really appreciate everything that you have been doing around town,” said Parker. To say it was a love fest, may not be an overstatement. The council’s relationship with Parker has grown over his tenure. That’s been especially true after the unexpected death of his wife, Wendy in late 2023. Councilman Bill Keller says they believe in Parker’s ability to lead the dayto-day operations of the city, but he says he means much more than that to the city of Seguin. “There’s much more than a professional relationship between the council and you. There’s a lot of love. It’s a two-way street. We know that you care for this community. You love this community and from everybody that I talk to, everybody loves you, the job you are doing and again, the word is possibly underutilized but I think I would represent everybody by saying we love you,” said Keller. Councilwoman Carter says she hopes that Parker remains in Seguin for a very long time, because his leadership will be hard to replace. “We just appreciate all you have done for this city. It does not go unnoticed. Anyone that would follow you and we are not talking about you needing to go anywhere where we have to discuss anyone following you but there’s huge shoes to fill with you and all that you do. So, just on behalf of the entire council, we thank you,” said Carter. Mayor Donna Dodgen says she spoke to staff and several others before Parker’s evaluation. She says the consensus is clear, and people believe that he’s doing a great job as Seguin’s city manager. “You represent our city with enthusiasm, dedication and commitment. You are really solution driven. You are not a no person. It is a how can we make it work? You solve problems through solutions. You love the one on one with people. You give out your cell phone number and your
email to more people thank I think I can even know and for many many years, whether we want to say it or not, we have done things one way and we are not doing that anymore and that’s because of you and I appreciate that. You look for employees that are at the next level. You look to the future who give us a new view, future thoughts and experiences. You strengthen and allow directors to leave their employees autonomously but is available when they need direction or help. You are an integral part of development and recruitment efforts. You are always ‘reppin’ Seguin, Texas. I talked to some of the directors and they all talked about how easy and supportive you are. You are creative with your solutions and encourage them to think outside the box and to the future and you know I’ve talked to your peers because I’ve run into them lately and he’s admired, often sought out for advice and mentoring and they all spoke well of his integrity, energy, creativity and honesty. So, we love you Steve,” said Dodgen. Parker was thankful after the council’s vote. He says last year was a challenging year, but the council and the community have just been extremely support every step of the way. “I’m blessed with one of the most awesome organizations and all the directors, all the staff members go above and beyond a high level of customer service and this is a time when we are in a very fast growth mode so without leaders like ya’ll helping and championing and being able to explain the benefits of growing fast but how we are growing smart. I just can’t say enough about this community. How they stepped up for me when my wife passed away, how my team stepped up. This made me realize that as long as you will have me, this is my forever home. I love it here. I’m invested in this community and I will continue to go forward 100 percent. This is a great organization,” said Parker. Parker has served as city manager since January of 2020. He tackled a number of projects and grown city staff during that time. All in an effort to meet the growing demands for services in what has now become a fast growing city.

Area high school school basketball roundup: Seguin’s Desiree Zuniga makes 100th three-pointer of the season Chris Austin
(Boerne) -- Seguin Lady Matador Desiree Zuniga made history in Boerne on Tuesday night, knocking down her 100th threepoint shot on the season against the Champion Lady Chargers. Champion won the game, 66-44. Freshman Britlyn Walls led Seguin with 18 points, while the senior Zuniga dropped in 14 in her last game as a Lady Matador. The Lady Mats conclude their season with nine wins. By the way, you can check out video of Zuniga’s historic shot. We have it for you on the KWED Facebook page and at our website SeguinToday.com. (Seguin) -- Meanwhile the three-point shots were falling for the Boerne-Champion boys as they took down the Seguin Matadors, 66-51 Tuesday night at Goldie Harris Gym. The Class 5A 13th-ranked Chargers hit 12 three-pointers as a team lead by Quinn Gable who
had seven treys and a game high 30 points. Seguin was led by Corey Dailey who poured in 18. John Jackson had 17 for the Matadors. In another important game in District 26-5A Tuesday night, the Pieper Warriors held off Smithson Valley 58-57. The win by Pieper coupled with Seguin’s loss leaves the Matadors two games behind the Warriors for the fourth and final playoff spot in the district with two games left to play. Seguin will host Pieper on Friday night. Three-pointers were dropping in Marion last night as well. (Marion) -- The Marion boys established a team record for threepointers in a game on Tuesday night as they reached the century mark in dispatching Luling, 10045 in Marion. The Bulldogs drained 19 threepoint shots in the game to establish a new school mark. Five Bulldogs
reached double figures in the win. Braeden Fleming led the way with 22 points. Richie Rayos had 19. Levi Gutz dropped in 16. Travis Randle added 12. And Jackson Missildine had 10 points. The Bulldogs clinched the third seed out of District 26-3A with the victory. The Boys BiDistrict round starts on February 19th. Marion will host Randolph on Friday night at Marion High School in a game you can hear on KWED. Meanwhile in the first game of a doubleheader in Marion, the Lady Bulldogs blasted Luling 5824 to wrap District 26-3A play on Tuesday night. The Marion girls finish as the third seed out of the district. They will play the second-place team from District 25-3A which will either be Hallettsville or Edna. The Lady Brahmas and
the Cowgirls finished tied for first place in that district. They will have a playoff to determine the top seed out of the district and the loser will play Marion next week in the Bi-District round. The Lady Bulldogs played Halllettsville last year in the BiDistrict round, coming up short in a close loss. (Geronimo) -- And the Navarro Lady Panthers, who wrapped their season on Monday, finished in a tie for third place in District 27-4A with Wimberley. A playoff game is likely to be held between the Lady Texans and Lady Panthers to determine the three seed in the district. Navarro’s potential BiDistrict opponents from District 28-4A would be either first place Cuero or second place La Vernia. The Lady Panthers beat Cuero last year in the Bi-District round.
