City Manager Doug Faseler to lead Holiday Stroll Parade By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) - For the past 14 years, he's led the City of Seguin. And now City Manager Doug Faseler will lead the 28th Annual Holiday Stroll Parade. Faseler has been named as the grand marshal for this year's holiday lighted parade in downtown Seguin. In thinking about this year's grand marshal, Mayor Don Keil said Faseler quickly came to mind. He says as soon as Faseler announced his retirement, and he got over the disappoint-

ment, he started thinking about what we could do to honor him for his service. "The Christmas Holiday Parade is always something that we reserve for somebody that has done something important for the community and that has stood out for the community and we want to honor him and this was just so timely. I mean it was perfect timing and you know, he is still going to be in town for a couple of weeks and I asked him and Laura to be in the parade and I think it's time that the city as a whole can say

thanks and he can show his face and wave and enjoy it -- instead of having to worrying about whether everybody is doing their job and if the lights get lit - all those sorts of things. He can be the center of attention rather than have to worry whether it's happening or not. So, he deserves it and I think it will be a great time as it always is," said Keil. Keil adds no one has done more in the last two decades to improve this city than Faseler. Faseler and his wife, Laura, will ride with the Mayor and his wife,

Marty, on a horse drawn carriage at the front of the parade. After the parade, the community is invited to gather in Central Park for the annual tree lighting. The mayor will also announce the winners of the parade and the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest. Food booths, photos with Santa and festive music by the Seguin High School band will also be made available. The parade, which kicks off two nights of downtown holiday fun, begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, Dec. 5 at the

intersection of College and Austin Streets. The parade will proceed south on Austin Street to downtown Seguin.

The contest was started a few years ago to help illustrate the Christmas season's true spirit of giving and sharing. The winning letter along with any photos of the family will also be printed in the holiday edition of the Seguin

Navarro staves off Sinton rally in regional semis, Deleon breaks single season rushing mark a lot of pressure, knowing that if he makes it, he puts it away. Awesome job by Malachi DeLaTorre with the snap, Sam Muniga with the hold, and Sebastian with the kick. Unbelievable, awesome job by those guys."

(Cuero) - Euler Deleon ran for 238 yards and three touchdowns to break Navarro's single season rushing record and help the Panthers survive a valiant comeback by Sinton with a 31-22 win in the 4A Division II Region IV semifinals Friday at Cuero's Gobbler Stadium.

Sims supported Deleon's big night on the ground with 88 rushing yards on 13 carries. Sinton contained Johnny Alegria for the most part, holding the senior tailback to 53 yards on 17 carries just a week after he ran for a career-high 237 and two touchdowns in the area playoff win over Rio Hondo.

With 2,003 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns on the season, Deleon toppled the previous mark of 1,869, set by Austin Randle in 2003. "He's a great young man, he works his tail off, he plays with everything that he has, and his teammates love him," Navarro head coach Rod Blount said in reflection of Deleon's season. "They're going to do everything they can to make sure he gets what he needs to, and they feed off each other. You can't say enough about the young man as a student, as an athlete, as a competitor. He's unbelievable." Deleon scored all three of his touchdowns in the first half and followed the second and third with two-point conversion runs to help Navarro forge a commanding 222 lead. Sinton's only points during that stretch came on a two-point return by Ray Perez after a blocked PAT kick following the Panthers' first score. Sinton began its rally with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Rene Galvan to Daelyn Davis on a 4th-and-7 play and a failed two-point conversion to cap a 70-yard drive with 57 seconds left in the second period, trimming Navarro's halftime lead to 22-8. The Panthers gambled on 4th-and-2 from their own 14yard line in the third quarter, and the Sinton defense stuffed it for a one-yard gain to take over on downs at the 15. Two plays later, Galvan hit Robert Hughes with a touchdown strike and called his own number on the twopoint conversion try to make it a six-point game, 22-16 with 6:46 left in the period. Sinton had a promising drive going with a chance to tie or take the lead midway through the fourth quarter before

The Panthers finished with 397 rushing yards on 67 snaps and didn't attempt a pass all night. The Navarro defense held Sinton to 261 total yards. Myles McCord came up with his first interception of the season to set up Navarro's third touchdown drive in the first half, and Brett Butler recovered a fumble. The Panthers stopped two of the Pirates' three two-point conversion tries. Blount credits Sinton for pushing his team to the limit, and says his the Panthers will benefit from responding to adversity moving forward.

With 2,003 yards on 192 carries, senior fullback Euler Deleon owns the Navarro school record for rushing yards in a single season. Photo by Jacqueline Springs. a bad snap forced Rylan Galvan to dive on the ball for a loss that put the Pirates in 3rd-and-23. After an incomplete pass, Sinton elected to punt on fourth down, and Navarro's Gabe Means blocked the kick. Defensive lineman David Reyna recovered the ball and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown to put the Panthers up 28-16 with 4:40 to play. Sinton didn't go away quietly from that point. Robert Hughes returned the ensuing kickoff to the Navarro 37, and Rene Galvan delivered a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Allen three plays later to cut the deficit to 28-22. Navarro sophomore Brody Whitson recovered Allen's onside kick attempt seconds later at the Pirates' 48-yard

line. Sebastian Sneed nailed a 26-yard field goal into the wind with 1:58 remaining to generate the final 31-22 margin. The onside kick recovery, the field goal, the blocked punt, and a fake punt conversion by Jean "MoMo" Sims to keep Navarro's first touchdown drive going all contributed to an exceptional special teams effort that proved critical against a scrappy Sinton team. "The guys stepped up and made a big play when we needed it," Blount said. "David did an awesome job of fielding the ball and getting it in the end zone. It's been automatic for Mo all year - he saw it, took off, and picked up the first down for us. Clutch, clutch field goal under

"We need tough ballgames, and we need to be backed up against the wall," the coach said. "We knew that they were going to come out and play hard in the second half. They always have. Much improved team. They've done a great job. But our guys made plays when they needed to, picked up the first downs, and got stops." Navarro is in the fourth round of the playoffs for the third time in four seasons, and the fourth time in school history. The Panthers meet District 13-4A-Division II rival Wimberley in the Region IV finals on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio. (Geronimo) - Navarro held Seguin without a basket during a 16-1 third quarter run to break open a game that was close at halftime and hand the Matadors a 46-29 loss Tuesday evening at the Navarro Events Center. Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch early and finished the first quarter knotted up at 5-5. Each squad picked it up in the second period, with Seguin edging Navarro 15-14 to take a 20-19 lead into halftime. The Panthers ramped up their full-court defensive pressure after the intermission, and a free throw by Neveah Quiroga is all that saved the Matadors from a shutout in the third quarter.

Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank four points of the fourth quarter to spark a 6-2 run that cut the margin to 37-27, but the Panthers responded with eight straight points to put the game away. Three freshman starters led Navarro in scoring, with Harborth pouring in a gamehigh 18 points while Sturm and Hepp each contributed eight. In the trio's first season of varsity basketball, Harborth is averaging a team-high 14.2 points, Sturm 8.6, and Hepp 5.5. Navarro head coach Darrell Harborth is encouraged by the early season chemistry among the freshmen and older players.

Navarro used a pair of buckets from Lalyn Sturm, a threee by Micayla Hawes, two-point field goals from Ryanne Hepp and Berklee Andrews, and five points on a three and a two at the end of the period by Tatum Harborth to build a 35-21 lead.

"They've played together for a long time now, so they know where each other's going to be, and it's one of those things where as good as they are, they play well together, it's two guards and a post on that aspect, and the other kids are all contributing, doing their part, and I think they're all coming together as a team," Harborth said.

Seguin's Kaitlyn Ranft scored the first

Ali Harless finished with four points,

Hawes three, Andrews and Sara Benner two apiece, and Kailey Dietert one. Ranft led Seguin with eight points. Taylor Bode added five. Coming out sluggish after halftime is an issue that first-year head coach Angela Brittain says the Matadors are still trying to iron out. "We haven't been a third quarter team all season, and so we know going out there that we've got to step it up," Brittain said. "We didn't do the things that we needed to do and take the shots that we needed. We just kind of fell apart in the third quarter. We weren't running our plays, they were just putting pressure on us, and we weren't able to handle it." Seguin (5-5) opens the District 26-5A schedule Tuesday at Goldie Harris Gym with a 6:30 p.m. tip against KerrvilleTivy. Navarro (6-4) hosts Marion on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Average American Eats 3,000 Calories On Thanksgiving

Number Of Abortions In U.S. Continues To Fall

(Washington, DC) -- The average American eats more than three-thousand calories on Thanksgiving Day. According to the Calorie Control Council, that comes along with 150 grams of fat. For a 160-pound person, it would take a four-hour run to burn all of that away. Don't go starving though. The council recommends planning light low-fat foods for the days following Turkey Day.

(Atlanta, GA) -- The number of abortions performed in America continues to fall. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported there were about 623-thousand abortions in 2016, the most recent year where statistics are available. It was more than 636-thousand the year before. It marks a 24-percent decline from the number reported in 2007. The numbers are based on 47 states self-reporting their totals. Three states, California, Maryland, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia do not report their totals.

Birth Rates Fall Again In 2018

Massachusetts Governor Signs Nation's Most Stringent Ban On Flavored Vaping Products

(Atlanta, GA) -- Birth rates are down for the fourth year in a row. A new report from the CDC shows fewer than three-point-eight million babies were born in the U.S. in 2018. That's a two percent drop from the year before. It's also the fewest number of births in more than three decades. The report shows the teen birth rate fell seven percent, but the rate for women between 35 and 44-years-old slightly increased.

(Boston, MA) -- Massachusetts will have the nation's toughest ban on flavored tobacco products. Governor Charlie Baker signed the ban into law yesterday to fully take effect on June 1st. It immediately restricts the sale of all flavored nicotine vaping products. It will add a ban on menthol cigarettes to start in June. People can purchase flavored vaping products only in licensed smoking bars and must consume them on site. The state is also adding a 75-percent excise tax on the purchase of e-cigarettes. The law also forces health insurers to cover the cost of getting people off of tobacco.
