Showcase Seguin continues to put the fun in doing business Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- This year’s business expo at the Seguin Coliseum welcomed dozens and dozens of potential customers. Showcase Seguin is hosted annually by the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce. Sharing Thursday night’s success was Chamber President Chester Jenke. “I think it was awesome. The feedback from the vendors was really really good. The number of people that stopped at each of
the booths and had a conversation with our local businesses I think is just kind of over the top, much more than what most of them expected,” said Jenke. This year’s business expo featured 48 booths. Registration also estimates close to 600 people were in attendance. Jenke says the hope is for folks to consider booth participants before seeking goods and services elsewhere. Showcase, pg 2.

Schertz Police drone hits the streets to help fight crime (Schertz) -- A police department on the west end of Guadalupe County is flying high today over its latest news. The Schertz Police Department has added a drone to its arsenal. The Schertz Citizens Police
Academy Alumni Association bought and donated the $20,000 drone late last year. The unit has a high-resolution camera, night vision, a spotlight, and a loudspeaker. Police Chief Jim Lowery says it
can be used at crime scenes and to help look for missing persons. A team of two officers, two sergeants, and a Geographic Information System specialist will start training to use the drone next week.
Showcase, continued. “Ultimately, we are trying to get you to stay and shop local and if you didn’t find something you need here tonight, definitely take a look at those other folks that are in town. We had vendors here from every walk and every talk inside the Seguin area here. If you wanted food, if you wanted banking, if you wanted life insurance, if you wanted mortuary, I mean we had all of that here tonight,” said Jenke. Adding to the fun was this year’s theme Toyland. The decorated booths offered prize giveaways, samples and other small gifts to those who stopped by. Jenke says the top creative booths also walked away as winners. This year’s winners include First Place, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and its Barbie theme. Second Place was the Seguin Gazette with its
Mario Brothers décor and Third Place went to Seguin Radio KWED and the Seguin Daily News with its KWED R US theme. Chamber officials say they again appreciate all those who participated and are already planning for next year. See photos on page 3.

Court Rules Refusing A Mask During Covid Not 1st Amendment Protected (Trenton, NJ) -- A federal court is ruling that refusing to wear a mask during the COVID pandemic is not protected under the First Amendment. Two New Jersey residents filed claims to the Appeals Court that they faced retaliation from school officials and police in Freehold and Cranford, after they refused to wear a mask while mask mandates were in place. The court’s ruling stays consistent with other similar legal decisions that found that masks were not a political symbol, but rather safety devices and protective equipment. Congress Grills Pharmaceutical Company Execs Update (Washington, DC) -- During a hearing in front of a senate subcommittee Thursday the three largest pharmaceutical executives admitted that patients in the United States are paying too much. Executives at Johnson & Johnson, Merck and Bristol Myers Squibb were summoned in front of the Senate Health Committee and were confronted about American prices compared to other wealthy countries. They conceded that prices are higher in America but claimed that medications arrive faster than anywhere else in the world, and that other countries have more limited health insurance coverage. The Department of Health and Human Services found in 20-22 that even when taking into account the discounts Americans receive from health plans and employers pay, people still pay on average at least three times as much. The executives went onto blame the pharmacy benefit managers for not negociating better deals because they receive more money when the sticker price of a drug is higher. Town Hall Focuses On Black Maternal Health (Tampa, FL) -- Black women in Tampa Bay are coming together to advocate for better maternal health care. A town hall was held in Tampa earlier this week at Sunshine Health on West Waters Ave. Those who attended talked about problems they’ve experienced getting proper care during their pregnancies. Zay Bell organized the town hall. She says she went into pre-term labor and had to watch her son die because her pregnancy was eight days short of being considered viable. Bell is planning another town hall in April. She tells ABC Action News we can’t fix racism but what we can fix is accountability.
