Seguin reminded to “Love Your Local”

Special by Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB director

(Seguin) -- If you are following the Downtown Seguin Facebook page, you might have seen their “Love Your Local” posts promoting and sharing information on the people and businesses that make up downtown. These posts serve as a way to connect the community with these individuals who are invested in revitalizing downtown Seguin. Its also a reminder that at the Valentine’s holiday, and all year long, that it is important to “show your love” and shop with our small, local independent businesses.

These posts are leading up to February’s Third Thursday themed Love Your Local. February’s Third Thursday is February 16 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. And like the Facebook posts, it is also reminder to the Seguin community about the importance of shopping with your local, homegrown businesses all year long.

In appreciation of your showing your love to the downtown businesses, the stores will be offering discounts and specials. Additionally, as you shop, businesses will enter you to win a gift basket filled with goodies from the downtown businesses.

“We appreciate the community’s support of downtown throughout the year, but a gentle reminder about showing support to the local businesses in downtown is always useful,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director, “We hope everyone will come out to show some love to our downtown businesses.”

In addition to the shopping, several food trucks plan to be downtown surrounding Central Park. Or grab dinner at a downtown restaurant like Ebi-Ebi, Seguin Brewing, or 1916 Bar & Bistro.

To find the participating stores, just look for the white flags out front of the store. And plan on coming downtown every Third Thursday for a fun themed evening.

Art, continued.

Excited to have unveiled the city’s first squirrel is Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director. Kramm says the squirrels are all part of the Seguin Commission on the Arts Squirrel Trail Program – a program similar to public art projects used in some other cities. Examples include the horses in Amarillo or closer to home, the Mermaids in San Marcos.

“This is very exciting to know that we had this idea percolate in our heads for a while and then we started actually putting things on paper and then we started to write out the plan and we started getting quotes. It was a lengthy process just to get where we are at, but I definitely think it’s worth it. The excitement of the community and their response to just seeing that first squirrel – just seeing the concept when it first came out has been very exciting to see how well the community has responded to this,” said Kramm.

Kramm says hopefully a number of other squirrels will be placed around the community very soon.

“It’s exciting to see the first one actually outside in the wild. We’ve got several more in the works probably another four or five to be installed over the next two months or so and we’ve already got sponsors for another five so it’s going very well and so we are looking forward to having this public art that will beautify Seguin as well as help attract tourists and visitors because they will want to probably go around and see the different squirrels at all the different locations,” said Kramm.

Meanwhile, those wishing to purchase a squirrel are invited to contact Kramm or the Seguin Commission on the Arts. The city’s plan is to sell anywhere between five to 10 squirrels every year for the next few years.
