Seguin welcomes first squirrel of its city-wide art project

(Seguin) – There’s a squirrel on the loose and it’s exactly how the city of Seguin wants it. The first of a series of hand crafted squirrels was unveiled this past Sunday on the lawn of Spirit of Joy Church.

Congregation members joined the city of Seguin, its neighbors and community members for the special unveiling of the larger-thanlife concrete squirrel that has been transformed into an individually designed colorful work of art.

For weeks, even months, the fiberglass squirrel has been painted and prepared by local artist Nancy Hartfiel. The squirrel was purchased

to sit outside the church alongside the city’s Walnut Springs Hike and Bike Trail by Spirit of Joy congregation member Kathy Yandell.

Named Joy, the squirrel is a representation of the heritage of the church building which once served as the former Seguin ISD Juan Seguin campus – a campus that originally served as the Mexican school in the community. Feeding into the Hispanic culture with the help of last year’s 40th anniversary of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, Hartfiel showcases Joy by utilizing the different flowers from all the various parts of Mexico. TV segment digs deeper into Davila’s BBQ family history

(Seguin) -- The legacy behind the family of a thirdgeneration pit master is now a story that everyone has come to learn. thanks to the featuring of Adrian Davila on The Dish -- a part of CBS’ Saturday Morning.

Davila, operator of Davila’s BBQ here in Seguin, was interviewed about not only his culinary talents, but about the foundation that helped him get started in the family-owned business -- a business that continues to operate on West Kingsbury Street in Seguin.

CBS correspondent Janet Shamlian sat down with Davila at the local restaurant for the weekend segment.

In addition to sampling all of the restaurant’s favorites. including the all so popular barbecue grilled cheese sandwich, Shamlian shares Davila’s passion for culinary arts and his desire to keep the cooking traditions of the Vaqueros, or cowboys alive.

Camera crews even follow Davila to his ranch on the east end of Guadalupe County, where he puts some of his most precious cooking skills to action.

Perhaps the most rewarding opportunity for Davila is to have had a chance to share the importance of his family with viewers and pays homage to his late grandfather Raul – who started it all.

“I remember him taking something that at the time was so primal as a big cut of meat and breaking it down and making something beautiful with it and when it came out, onto the table and people enjoyed it, that was astonishing to me,” said Davila.

The operation of the business was then inherited in the 90s by Adrian’s father, Edward, who assumed the reins from Raul.

Today, Edward works alongside Adrian in continuing the 50-plus year tradition.

During the TV segment, Shamlian shared an observation.

“I was watching your dad watch you and you couldn’t see it, but I saw the pride in his eyes. He’s proud of you,” she states.

Unable to hold back the tears, Davila replies, “that’s what we all want right? We’re born with this inherent trait to satisfy our parents. It’s human. Everybody wants it –to satisfy their parents, right? Everybody wants to make their parents proud.”

Seguin reminded to “Love Your Local”

(Seguin) -- If you are following the Downtown Seguin Facebook page, you might have seen their “Love Your Local” posts promoting and sharing information on the people and businesses that make up downtown. These posts serve as a way to connect the community with these individuals who are invested in revitalizing downtown Seguin. Its also a reminder that at the Valentine’s holiday, and all year long, that it is important to “show your love” and shop with our small, local independent businesses.

These posts are leading up to February’s Third Thursday themed Love Your Local. February’s Third Thursday is February 16 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. And like the Facebook posts, it is also reminder to the Seguin community about the importance of shopping with your local, homegrown businesses all year long.

In appreciation of your showing your love to the downtown businesses, the stores will be offering discounts and specials. Additionally, as you shop, businesses will enter you to win a gift basket filled with goodies from the downtown businesses.

“We appreciate the community’s support of downtown throughout the year, but a gentle reminder

about showing support to the local businesses in downtown is always useful,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director, “We hope everyone will come out to show some love to our downtown businesses.”

In addition to the shopping, several food trucks plan to be downtown surrounding Central Park. Or grab dinner at a downtown restaurant like Ebi-Ebi, Seguin Brewing, or 1916 Bar & Bistro.

To find the participating stores, just look for the white flags out front of the store. And plan on coming downtown every Third Thursday for a fun themed evening.

Art, continued.

Excited to have unveiled the city’s first squirrel is Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street and CVB director. Kramm says the squirrels are all part of the Seguin Commission on the Arts Squirrel Trail Program – a program similar to public art projects used in some other cities. Examples include the horses in Amarillo or closer to home, the Mermaids in San Marcos.

“This is very exciting to know that we had this idea percolate in our heads for a while and then we started actually putting things on paper and then we started to write out the plan and we started getting quotes. It was a lengthy process just to get where we are at, but I definitely think it’s worth it. The excitement of the community and their response to just seeing that first squirrel – just seeing the concept when it first came out has been very

exciting to see how well the community has responded to this,” said Kramm.

Kramm says hopefully a number of other squirrels will be placed around the community very soon.

“It’s exciting to see the first one actually outside in the wild. We’ve got several more in the works probably another four or five to be installed over the next two months or so and we’ve already got sponsors for another five so it’s going very well and so we are looking forward to having this public art that will beautify Seguin as well as help attract tourists and visitors because they will want to probably go around and see the different squirrels at all the different locations,” said Kramm.

Meanwhile, those wishing to purchase a squirrel are invited to contact Kramm or the Seguin Commission on the Arts. The city’s plan is to sell anywhere between five to 10 squirrels every year for the next few years.

Strong 2nd Half Propels Navarro Lady Panthers to the Area Round

(Seguin) -- The Navarro Runnin’ Lady Panthers came out strong in the 3rd quarter turning a one-point halftime deficit into sizeable lead, as they knocked off Cuero 47-34 in the UIL Bi-District round Monday night at Seguin High School.

The teams battled back and forth in the 1st half as both squads traded blows with the Lady Gobblers holding a 22-21 lead at the break. The Lady Panthers were lead by Tatum Harborth who scored 12 points in the game’s first 16 minutes including a three-pointer just before the buzzer to cut Cuero’s lead down to one.

In the third quarter, Navarro’s Ryanne Hepp poured in five points to get the Lady Panther offense rolling as they outscored the Lady Gobblers 15-5 in the decisive quarter to take control of the game. Following the game, Navarro head coach Darrell Harborth credited Hepp for her effort in helping turn the game in the Lady Panthers’ favor.

“When Ryanne can contribute like that, it’s always better for us. (I’m) proud for her and glad she was able to do those things. She’s always a defense stopper for us and she has to guard those bigger kids, so kudos to her.”

Navarro would keep the foot on the gas in the 4th quarter as they more than doubled up Cuero in the 2nd half, winning the half 26-12. Harborth said the 1st half was a challenge, but he was proud of the way his team played coming out of the locker room.

“Any playoff win is a big win. I don’t think it was our best effort tonight especially in the 1st half, but that is playoff basketball. Give Cuero credit, they did a great job. They have some kids with some size. When somebody has size like that it hurts us a little bit, but (I’m) pretty proud of our 2nd half and how things came out.”

The Lady Gobblers featured a sophomore twin tower combination of 6 foot center Aubrey Bowles and 5’10” forward Arissa Carbonara. The two combined for nine points in the 1st half, but were held to only two points in the 2nd half by the stout Lady Panther defense.

Tatum Harborth lead the Navarro offensive attack with 20 points. Hepp added nine and Tegan Harborth had seven. The win was the Lady Panthers’ 30th victory overall on the season.

Navarro moves onto the Area round and will next face the winner of tonight’s Iowa Colony/Brookshire Royal Bi-District matchup. The UIL Area round takes place later this week.

Scientists May Have Figured Out Why Some People Don’t Get COVID

(Australia) -- A team of researchers from the University of Sydney may have determined why some people never get COVID-19 while others experience severe symptoms. They say a naturally occurring protein in the lungs attaches itself to the coronavirus and prevents it from binding with other cells. The researchers found that people who never experienced symptoms of COVID had higher levels of the protein in their blood than those with a severe infection. Armed with this new information, the scientists now hope to use it to create new treatments that could prevent infection and work against all variants of the virus.

CDC Adds COVID Vaccine To Routine Immunization Schedule

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is adding the COVID vaccine to routine immunization schedules for kids and adults. It joins the flu, polio, measles mumps and rubella, and other shots. However, that doesn’t mean the CDC is making the shot mandatory for children. It means that it’s joining their current recommendation for regular vaccines.

State Attorneys General Weigh In On FDA Abortion Pill Approval

(Austin, TX) -- Over 40 state attorneys general are weighing in on a landmark lawsuit that seeks to overturn the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of abortion pills. The Texas suit was filed in November by an anti-abortion group seeking to overturn the FDA’s approval for the medication. New York Attorney General Letita James along with 22 other attorneys general filed a brief in support of the defense, arguing that reversing the approval of abortion bills would have “devastating consequences” for women in the U.S. Meanwhile, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch led a group of 22 Republican attorneys who filed their own brief, claiming the FDA approval is “deeply flawed.”

Colorado Bill To Let Psychologists Prescribe Medication To Patients

(Denver, CO) -- A Colorado bill could soon let licensed psychologists prescribe certain mental medications to their patients. House Bill 1071 will also require psychologists to undergo more training and education before they’re allowed to prescribe. The bill passed the Colorado House of Representatives last week with bipartisan support. With Senate President Steve Fenberg and State Senator Cleave Simpson as prime sponsors of the legislation, the bill is likely to get similar support in the Colorado Senate.

Ask the Master GARDENERS

Q: When should I fertilize my lawn? I want it to look nice this year.

A: Do not fertilize your lawn until you have mown twice. This advice comes from Doug Welsh’s Texas Garden Almanac. By waiting, you know that the grass is actively growing and is ready to use the applied fertilizer.

Q: Is it safe to start my spring vegetable and flower plants? I would like early blooms and fruit.

A: Remember that the last freeze in Seguin in 2021 was February 22, and the last freeze in 2022 was March 13. If you really want to begin now, plant in containers that can be moved indoors if needed. In fact, I always buy my tomato transplants as soon as they are available and plant each one in a gallon container of good soil. Since I don’t need many plants, I put the six pots in my little red wagon so that it can be easily moved.

Speaking of spring flowers, there are many types that are perfect for Texas. We’ve been enjoying our cool season annuals which included dianthus, ornamental cabbage (look at the ones at the entrance to the library), pansies, snapdragons, stock and violets. It will soon be time to replace them with warm season annuals. And, of course, my favorite (because it is so easy to grow and is so colorful) is the periwinkle or annual vinca. Now is a good time to plan your color scheme and perhaps try different annuals than usual, such as amaranthus with its colorful

foliage, or a bed of cosmos which can be seeded or transplanted. Purslane and portulaca both have excellent heat tolerance. Or you might try a bed of tall zinnias, or a bed of even taller sunflowers.

Q: We’ve had a recent rain, but I am afraid of a dry summer. When can I do to help my plants?

A: Mulching is one of the most important things you can do for your garden. Research by Welsh showed that un-mulched shrubs could lose two-thirds of the water applied on the soil through evaporation and only one-third through transpiration. Mulching has other benefits. Personally I think that nothing looks nicer than cedar mulch around the plants by my front door. And the smell is a wonderful reminder of Christmas year round. As the mulch decomposes, it provides organic matter to the soil which is another benefit.

Q: When do I prune my roses?

A: That depends or whether you have spring-blooming climbing roses or other types of roses. I have heritage roses and a few hybrids so I prune mine in late winter. Traditionally this is done on Valentine’s Day. Don’t ask me why, but it does make it easy to remember. Summer blooming shrubs such as these roses generally bloom on shoots that grow from this spring’s growth. When I prune, I also strip off the old leaves, most of which are already dead and gone, and clean out dead leaves and twigs from under the bush.

FYI: Don’t forget to keep your birdbaths full. The birds and animals empty mine every evening.
