Early voting begins today for Republican, Democratic PRIMARIES in Texas Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- The primary election season has officially arrived. The Demcratic and Republican primary elections will be held on Tuesday, March 5. Early voting begins today for both primaries.

Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes says the primaries are partisan elections, and voters will have to choose which party’s election they want to vote in before they are able to receive a ballot.

“I think the most important thing for people to know, before they head out to the polls, is that this is a party primary election.

And so what that means, is

voters when they come out to vote, are going to have to select either a Democratic ballot or a Republican ballot before they can vote. And that’s a little bit different than what we see in November where all the different parties are on the same ballot. So, I think that’s an important item for the voters should be aware of. I definitely recommend that they go to our website and download their sample ballot, or come into one of our offices and get a sample ballot so that they’re prepared when they come to the polls.

El Ranchito closes its doors Darren Dunn

(Seguin) -- Seguin is a community well known for its quality Mexican food. It boasts a number of restaurants, serving everything from traditional Mexican fare to Tex-Mex favorites. Even with a growing list of establishments, it’s not likely that you would find a Mexican restaurant in Seguin that’s been doing it for as long as El Ranchito, but sadly that tradition has come to an abrupt end.

Cecilia DeLaGarza, the owner of El Ranchito, announced in a post on social media, that the restaurant was closing after serving this community for nearly nine decades.

“As the owner and sole operator of the El Ranchito Restaurant, I have made the difficult decision to close the family restaurant that my late husband’s grandmother, Juanita Cardenas, opened in 1935.

While I wish our family legacy could continue, after 89 years of

having the opportunity to serve the community, this is not just feasible and Saturday, February 17, 2024, was the final day of business,” wrote DeLaGarza in the post.

DeLaGarza thanked their patrons for supporting the restaurant over the years. She says they had hoped to remain open, but she was unable to continue to operate the business.

“Unfortunately, I have recently faced a health issue that has forced

me to prioritize my well-being. It has been a challenging time, but I want to express my gratitude to the local community for their unwavering loyalty and support over the past few years. Although I wish to continue our family legacy, I am unable to physically manage day-today operations. While this decision has been difficult for me, I have been advised that it is in my best interest. I express my gratitude and will always cherish the memories, love, and support we received from our loyal customers and other local businesses who have supported El Ranchito Restaurant for all these years,” wrote DeLaGarza.

The post made no reference to the future of the El Ranchito building, or if there was a plan to sell it at this time. El Ranchito is located at 983 N. Hwy 123, across the highway from Seguin High School.

“That often catches voters by surprise in the primary years because that is different than our other elections,” said Hayes.

Voters will not only need to be aware of the fact that they need to make a party affiliation with this election, but they also need to understand that they might not be eligible to vote in some races. Hayes says you may find yourself looking for a race that’s on another party’s ballot, or for a race that lies outside of the boundaries of your voting district.

“I think it’s important to note that there are candidate signs all over and that’s part of our process.

But just because a voter sees a candidate’s sign, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the voter resides in that person’s district. So, that’s where the sample ballot comes in very handy, because a voter may see a candidate’s signs all over town, but they may not reside in that candidate’s district. And so, it’s important to know which party that candidate is in, and also if the voter lives in the district or not. Because that can generate some confusion when the voters come out to the polls, and the person they’re looking for isn’t on their ballot. And it may just be because the voter doesn’t actually reside in that candidate’s district,” said Hayes.

The primaries are administered by the Guadalupe County Elections Office on behalf of the local GOP and Democratic parties. Hayes says the elections will be held together to make it easier for voters to access ballots for both parties.

“In our county, we are doing a joint primary election, which means that the voters will come to the same polling place -- whether they are voting Republican or Democrat.

There’ll be one set of election judges, (and) one set of voting equipment. Everything is shared between the two different parties. From that perspective, everything will look exactly the same as it does in every other election. The primary difference being, that they will have to select whether they want a Republican or a Democratic ballot,” said Hayes.

There are a few rules that voters will need to follow when they arrive at the polls. Hayes says they want everyone to participate in the voting process, but following these rules will make it a better overall experience for everyone.

“In order to vote in Texas, the voter needs to present a photo ID. Typically what we see is a Texas drivers license or a military ID and things of that nature (or) a passport. But it is important for a voter to bring a photo ID. It’s also important to note that there is no recording devices allowed in a polling place. And that includes within 100 feet of the polls. So, outside any Election Day or early voting location, there’s what we call a distance marker, and once the voter passes that distance marker, they shouldn’t be wearing any campaigning or political gear, (and) they shouldn’t have their cell phone out and be using it. So again, this is where we go back to having a sample ballot or some kind of voting guide already marked on a hard copy and in their hands, because voters are not allowed -- per Texas law -- to use their cell phones

There are local, state and federal races on each ballot.

There are no locally contested races on the Democratic ballot in Guadalupe County, but there are some state and federal contested races on each Democratic ballot.

All of the locally contested races appear on Republican ballots here in Guadalupe County. There’s a countywide race for the Republican nomination for Guadalupe County Sheriff. Sheriff Arnold Zwicke is not running again, after spending more than 20 years in office. Both Patrick Pinder and Joshua Ray are running for the GOP nomination for sheriff. The winner of this race will run unopposed during the general election in November.

Sheriff Zwicke’s term runs through the end of this year, and the new sheriff would take office on January 1, 2025.

There’s also a heavily contested race for the Precinct 1 seat on the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Commissioner Greg Seidenberger is not seeking reelection, which opened up that seat to five-hopefuls. Jackie Ott, James Ransdell, Clint Taft, Bryan Underwood and Dustin Engelke are seeking the Republican nomination for this seat. The winner of this GOP nomination will earn the right to face the Democratic nominee, Nahomie Alanis; and the Libertarian nominee, Nolan Schmidt, who are both running unopposed for the nominations of their respective parties. There are several other local, state and federal contested races on the GOP ballot.

BATON ROUGE, LA -- The Texas Lutheran women’s track and field team competed in the LSU Twilight Friday at Carl Maddox Field House at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

TLU would be the lone Division-III team in the meet.

For the third week in a row, junior Taylor Norrell (Lake Jackson/Brazosport) stole the show by breaking yet another record - this time one of her own - breaking her own 60m hurdle record set just last week with a new record time of 9.22 seconds to finish in 11th place.

Freshman Mackenzie Combs (New Braunfels/Canyon) finished seventh in the 3000m run with a time of 11:37.74.

Emma was born on July 8, 1931, in St. Hedwig, Texas to Regina (Wyrwich) and Peter Aniol, Sr. Emma is preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Otto William Radtke, her brother, Peter “Sonny” Aniol, Jr., and sister, Sophie Craft.

Hopkins

Margaret Kyle Hopkins, age 92 of Seguin, Texas formerly of Beaumont, Texas passed away on February 12, 2024.

Margaret, also known as “Meg” and “Mom” was born in Beaumont, Texas June 30, 1931, to Jules and Brudge Kyle. She attended Mary Baldwin Women’s College for 1 year and then the University of Texas for 3 years where she was a Phi Beta Pi and studied language arts. While at the University of Texas, she met the love of her life, Wallace Kimbrough Hopkins (Wally).

Margaret married Wally on February 2, 1952, at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Beaumont, Texas. Soon after their wedding, they moved to El Centro California where they lived in a Quonset hut for 3 years while Wally served in the Navy. This is where they had their firstborn child, Pam. Many memories were shared about the Quonset hut time of their lives and how happy they were making the best of their time together. Margaret and Wally then moved to Beaumont, Texas where they welcomed their second and third-born children, Brudge and Kim, and spent the remainder of their married life together until Wally died in 2002. Margaret then moved to Seguin to be closer to family.

Margaret enjoyed being a member of the Beaumont Jr. League, Magnolia Garden Club, and served on the Garden Committee at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she loved beautifying the church grounds. Margaret and Wally raised their 3 children in the Episcopal Church and supported each of them throughout life by encouraging them and attending activities, school events, weddings, births, and child-raising support.

Margaret loved to travel, spend time in the kitchen, and gardening, and reading countless books. She traveled the world with Wally, her family, and friends creating countless special moments in all our lives. Margaret also loved to play tennis and had a great circle of tennis friends she played with weekly, including some of her and Wally’s best friends the Coffins and Dishman’s.

Margaret and Wally loved to spend weekends at Lakeway where they spent many summers water skiing on Lake Travis, playing tennis, and attending Longhorn football games with their children and grandchildren. When they were not at Lakeway, they enjoyed spending many summers in Breckenridge, Colorado with friends and family watching hummingbirds, playing tennis, and enjoying the cool Colorado air.

She spent much time with her family at El Paraiso Ranch in Bandera, Texas where she hosted the family and many generations of friends with her amazing recipes, keeping the hummingbird feeders filled, feeding deer and threw out thousands upon thousands of bluebonnet seeds. Though this bluebonnet effort was somewhat unsuccessful, she continued her efforts.

Margaret’s passion, vigor, and overall sunny disposition throughout her life brought joy to all those surrounding her. Her generosity, graciousness, kindness, and willingness to adventure set examples for many to follow.

She was never a quitter and lived a life of positivity, always making the most of any situation. Most recently, slowed by an aging body, she never complained, but instead continued to use her life doing things she loved. With the help of caregivers, she never stopped making gumbo, crawfish etouffee, baking rounds of cookies, and cakes, planting new flowers, and preparing her garden. She had already begun to prepare for this year’s tomato crop with new plants in the dirt. She compiled a cookbook in 2023 and a 2nd cookbook near completion.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, Jules and Brudge Kyle, her husband Wallace Kimbrough Hopkins, her daughter Pam Hopkins Lock, her sister, Mary Kyle, sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Hill, brother in law George Hopkins. She is survived by her son, Brudge Kyle Hopkins, daughter, Kim Hopkins Mueller and her husband Bernie, her sister-in-law, Jane Hopkins and her 5 grandchildren who she loved dearly, Julie Lock Lambert, her husband Peter, Christy Lock Sutton, her husband Andrew, Brian John Lock, Amber Mueller Wendt, her husband Michael, Kyle Joseph Mueller and his wife Alyssa.

Lastly, Margaret is survived by 5 great-grandchildren whom she adored, Henry and Clyde Lambert, Madison Sutton, Margaret, and Eleanor Wendt.

The family wishes to express our thanks to the wonderful caregivers, healthcare providers, and other individuals who have helped her continue to live life joyfully: Kimberly, Stacy, Rachael, Ingrid, Regina, Victoria, Gloria, Adrian, Josephine, Chon, and Manuel. We also want to thank Dr. Thomas Raetzsch and his staff for their care and love.

Though our hearts are deeply saddened that our Meg and precious Mother is no longer with us, we can’t help but celebrate that she is now in a heavenly place with her love Wally.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 23, 2024, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 680 Calder Ave., Beaumont, Texas 77701, followed by a reception at 870 19th Street, Beaumont Texas 77706 immediately following the service.

Olga Ramos, age 79, of Seguin, Texas passed away on February 13, 2024. She was born on January 13, 1945, in Seguin to Jesusa (Garcia) and Senovio Guerrero.

Olga and Lupe were married for 60 years on September 22, 2023. She loved to do crafts and take care of her puppy, Bear.

She loved taking care of others, especially her children, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Her tamales were her specialty. She was one in a million!

She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Juan “Johnny” Garcia and Larry Garcia, and her sister Marilu Flores.

CBP Doc Reportedly Wanted Fentanyl Lollipops (Washington, DC) -- The top doctor for Customs and Border Protection tried to get his staff to get him fentanyl lollipops, according to a whistleblower report sent to Congress today. Dr. Alexander Eastman reportedly spent hours directing staff to obtain the schedule 2 narcotic to take with him to the UN General Assembly meeting in New York last September, arguing he might need them if any CBP operators on the trip were injured in an emergency, or if they encountered a patient in need. The whistleblowers say they questioned how he would store the lollipops and what he would do with any unused fentanyl, to which he responded by writing a new policy regarding Schedule 2 narcotics. They also say at the time Eastman was under investigation over improper ordering of narcotics for a friend who works with the agency’s Air and Marine Operations.

Study: More Die From Smoking Drugs Than From Injecting Drugs (Washington, DC) -- A new study suggests there are more overdose deaths from smoking drugs than from injecting drugs. The CDC looked at data from crime scene investigations, autopsy reports and witness accounts of overdose deaths, and compared data from 2020 with data from 2022. Their report found smoking was the most common form of drug usage involved in ODs. It found the percentage of overdose deaths from smoking drugs rose to about 23 percent during that time, while the percentage of ODs from injections fell to 16 percent. The majority of those deaths were from synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

60 Products Recalled Due To Listeria Outbreak (Undated) -- The FDA has recalled nearly 60 products containing contaminated dairy. A national outbreak of listeria has been linked to cheese, yogurt, and sour cream made by Rizo-Lopez Foods and sold under over a dozen brand names. The recall has also been extended to salad kits, taco kits, and other products sold nationwide, including Walmart, Costco, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe’s. Those products either contain cheese made by Rizo-Lopez Foods or were processed on the same line. The outbreak is linked to two deaths and 23 hospitalizations.

Beach Boy Brian Wilson Has Dementia (Undated) -- The family of Brian Wilson is confirming that the Beach Boys co-founder has dementia. A post on his Facebook page says that two “longtime” family representatives will serve as co-conservators for Wilson. The post added the decision on conservatorship came after “consultation” with Wilson, his seven children, and his doctors. The family noted that Wilson will still be able to work on “current projects” and “participate in any activities he chooses.” The family determined that Wilson is unable to care for himself since the January death of his wife, who also served as his manager.
