The vision begins tonight for Wells Fargo building Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The vision for the city of Seguin’s newly purchased Wells Fargo property begins today.

Tonight marks the first of three public meetings designed to work toward the future use of the property.

The Wells Fargo property is located at 101 E. Nolte St. in downtown Seguin.

As reported earlier, the city council approved a partnership with TBA Douglas Architects so that it could help it sell the property to a qualified developer. The idea is to select a developer

who will then redevelop the site based on the community’s vision -- a vision that will be laid out during these next three meetings at the Seguin Public Library.

City leaders say each of the three meetings will build upon the previous one. They say the logistics of each of the ideas brought to the table will be reviewed.

Tonight’s meeting will discuss the focus on downtown character, design use of public right of way and other wanted amenities.

The Seguin Daily News is highlighting the local candidates appearing on the March 5, 2024 Primary Election. Each candidate was asked to respond to the following three questions.

Early voting began on Tuesday, Feb. 20 and runs through Friday, March 1. Today’s featured contest is for the Republican nomination for Guadalupe County Sheriff. The two candidates look to replace longtime Sheriff Arnold Zwicke who has chosen to retire. There are no local candidates appearing on the Democratic ballot for this position.

I'm running for sheriff because my core belief in public service and community safety drives me to action. Having served as a former deputy sheriff and now as the fire marshal and emergency management coordinator, my commitment to enhancing the safety and well-being of our community is unwavering. Over the past 12 years, I've gained a comprehensive understanding of the needs of our emergency responders and the citizens they protect, approaching challenges with an all-hazards perspective.

With a background rooted in all-hazard preparedness, I'll build upon the foundation laid by the current sheriff and propel our department forward. My tenure and local connections, forged through firsthand experiences with local disasters, crimes, and emergencies, afford me a unique insight into our community's dynamics. As the county's emergency management coordinator, I've cultivated relationships with various agencies, strengthening our collaborative efforts in ensuring public safety.

My familiarity with the sheriff 's department's operations equips me to address its needs while meeting the expectations of our citizens. My leadership approach prioritizes fiscal responsibility, effective communication, and genuine empathy. I lead by example, fostering a culture of accountability and transparency within law enforcement.

Beyond qualifications and experience, my sincere care for the well-being of our first responders and community propels me forward. I've witnessed the positive impact of community-oriented policing and am committed to building upon this foundation.

I am a United States Marine Corps Veteran and retired from the Texas Department of Public Safety. I served in many roles during my 22 years with DPS: THP State Trooper, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, K-9, DPS CID Special Agent, Hostage Negotiator, and ultimately Texas Ranger. I have a diverse law enforcement background including uniform patrol, undercover operations, disaster relief, hostage negotiations, and major complex criminal investigations. I retired in October of 2022, and was immediately appointed as Chief Deputy Sheriff of the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office. As the Chief Deputy, I am Sheriff Arnold Zwicke’s second in command and currently supervise all Sheriff ’s Office operations, jail operations, and 260 employees. I am a graduate of Texas A&M University in Commerce with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

I am a career law enforcement officer. I am currently endorsed by Sheriff Arnold Zwicke and many other legendary and executive level law men throughout the State. I believe the future of our county is going to need strong and experienced leaders to lead us forward. The crisis at the border has changed everything. We need an experienced law enforcement officer at the helm of our Sheriff ’s Office.

I’ve served all throughout the State of Texas for most of my career. My family and I have moved back to this area three times over the course of my career because my wife is from here. This is our home. Our family is here. Our extended family is here. I care about this community and want to do everything in my power to protect it. Teams needed for golf tourney Money to be raised for large Seguin sign in local park Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) -- The 2024 Leadership Seguin Class is ready to play and have fun in hopes of raising money for its proposed community service project.

The class wants to install a large, lighted and interactive "Seguin" sign in Walnut Springs Park, across from the Seguin Library.

The plans are in place and a key component to seeing this vision come true is fundraising.

The leadership class is a program hosted by the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

The class hopes to take advantage of the Max Starcke Park Golf Course before it closes for renovation.

Chamber membership coordinator Maria Castilleja says the group has chosen to host a Swing for Seguin Golf Fundraiser tournament on Friday, March 8.

She says the money will go towards this year's class project which includes larger-than-life size letters that spell out Seguin.

"The large interactive letters could be 5 foot to 25 foot, lights, the whole she-bang. It's $36,000. We've found a company out in Cedar Park that was actually endorsed by the city of Killeen which is where the project stemmed from. They raved about them and we did some bidding and they were the ones who came in. The $36,000 is what we are needing to do the whole she-bang. If we just wanted to do the letters with maybe spotlights, Jack Jones (parks director) has been working with me on how the lights could look like even if we didn't have the illuminated letters. It would be about $20,000," said Castilleja.

Castilleja says entry for a four person golf team is $500. "$500 -- $125 each a player, a team of four. With that of course, they would get range balls, rental of a cart, 18hole scramble and then of course, breakfast and lunch. We do have support from sponsors already and our lunch is going to be from Burnt Bean. Our breakfast is going to be from Alex's Tacos -- two drink tickets and swag, snacks and we are also offering eight mulligans per team," said Castilleja.

She adds the cost of $500 includes a full day on the greens and/or public recognition toward the project.

"People are saying that they don't golf so we designed a Leadership Friend. For $500, your name could be on our plaque, of course, to show your tremendous support and there's other sponsorships as well," said Castilleja.

Castilleja says she is appreciative to the collection of sponsors who have already shown their support.

She also thanks the city of Seguin, including Parks Director Jack Jones, for working closely with this leadership class.

"For one, the projects like with the city of Seguin, they are not funding it so we fundraise for it. Jack Jones has always said great things about the project. He knows very closely how the wave pool changed. The Juan Seguin burial changed and something like this bringing in people to make them aware of the downtown area and the city of Seguin in general would help a lot of the shops downtown -- not just only them. It's the whole city and I know that seeing a mural is fabulous and I think the kids and the adults would love the interactive part of the letters itself," said Castilleja.

Event sponsorships range from $100 to $10,000.

City officials say the public is encouraged to attend all three meetings or as many as they possibly can just to get a better

idea of the city’s direction.

What are the biggest challenges facing the winner of this seat, and how are you prepared to address those challenges?

The biggest challenges facing the incoming sheriff are multifaceted, stemming from the transition in leadership and the evolving needs of our growing community. As the population expands, so do the responsibilities of deputies, jailers, clerks, and other roles within the sheriff 's office. Staffing retention has been a persistent issue, compounded by the impending change in leadership.

To address these challenges, I'm prepared to approach the transition with careful consideration and inclusivity. Recognizing the potential disparity between my perspectives and those of the previous sheriff, I'll prioritize a smooth transition by ensuring that policies and procedures are updated to align with my vision for the department.

I intend to conduct a thorough assessment of the agency, taking 60 to 90 days to gather comprehensive information before implementing any significant changes. Rather than succumbing to pressure, I'll maintain an impartial stance, inviting open feedback from all agency members through a "no rank in the room" approach.

A valuable framework for evaluating the agency's strengths and weaknesses is the 5 Pillars model, which encompasses crucial aspects such as recruitment and retention practices, policy alignment with state and federal laws, training adequacy, supervision protocols, and disciplinary procedures. By systematically evaluating each pillar, I'll identify areas for improvement and implement targeted strategies to enhance agency effectiveness.

I recognize the unique role of the sheriff in our community-a position of accountability directly to the citizens. Embracing this responsibility, I'll prioritize transparent communication and engagement with the public, fostering trust and collaboration to ensure that the sheriff 's office remains a reliable guardian of public safety.

I understand that the challenges and transition will be complex with any change in leadership, and I will work to make it a smooth transition with all staff at the sheriff 's office.

Why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?

I am the most qualified candidate for the sheriff 's position due to my extensive leadership experience, proven track record in crisis management, and unwavering dedication to community service.

Over the course of my 12-year career spanning law enforcement, fire investigations, fire department operations, and EMS, I have developed a complex understanding of the diverse challenges inherent in protecting and serving our community.

I bring eight years of hands-on experience as the chief of an agency, where I successfully led and managed teams through various complex scenarios. Pinder, pg. 5

The number one priority of any Sheriff should be to protect the citizens of our county and suppress crime. The growth in our county is the most significant challenge facing our residents, which contributes to a host of law enforcement issues. While being mindful of taxpayer dollars, I will increase resources and staffing, partner with area law enforcement agencies and stakeholders, and increase law enforcement presence throughout the county. Law enforcement presence is the single most effective tool in preventing and reducing crime. I will utilize my extensive experience to expand and modernize our enforcement efforts.

I will equip our personnel with the proper tools and technological resources to adequately protect our citizens, protect our property, and protect our Deputies.

I will invest in our personnel by increasing training standards, accountability, and expectations. By doing so, we will provide a better and more professional and effective law enforcement work product for the citizens of Guadalupe County, building upon the legacy and foundation established by Sheriff Zwicke.

Additionally, crimes against children are unfortunately on the rise in our country.

I plan to implement proactive policing strategies, targeting child predators and traffickers both currently in and traveling through our communities.

I have spent my entire adult life combating crime and pursuing those who choose to harm others. My extensive expertise lends me the background and practical experience to lead others in the same pursuit. I currently lead the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office at the direction of Sheriff Arnold Zwicke. I have not only my extensive experience to draw on, but have also had the opportunity to see, learn, and observe how an experienced and dedicated Sheriff has done the job on a day-to-day basis. I am ready and prepared right now, to step into the role of Sheriff.

Why do you believe you are the best candidate for the job? In other words, what do you believe sets you apart from your opponents?

My extensive experience in all aspects of law enforcement and my current role leading all 260 employees and daily operations of the Guadalupe County Sheriff ’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff Zwicke, distinctly sets me apart from my opponent. The County Sheriff, by state statute, is the top law enforcement officer in the county. Although there are many aspects to leading the Sheriff ’s Office, the primary and by far greatest responsibility is targeting, investigating, and suppressing crime. My entire professional and adult life has been dedicated to this exact purpose. My wife has deep family roots here. As part of working for the State for 22 years, much like military service, I’ve been called upon to serve throughout the State; but Guadalupe County is and always will be our home. I am thankful for the extensive experience and knowledge God has given me as a result of my entire law enforcement career, because I truly believe He has prepared me for this exact purpose. I am ready to put that expertise to direct use, continuing to serve and protect my home, your home, my family, and your family. (Geronimo) -- On a sunny and windy afternoon in Geronimo on Monday, the Navarro Panthers won their opener in the first game for new coach Justin Dunnam. The Panthers cruised past the Jourdanton Indians, 8-1 at Navarro High School.

Senior Landun Taylor got the Panthers going in the bottom of the first. Taylor stroked a triple down the right field line to bring home Austin Davidson and Gavin Newborg to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Matthew Villaneuva would bring Taylor home on a fielder’s choice for Navarro’s third run.

Colt Brown got the start on the bump and threw three hit-less innings with four strikeouts on the afternoon. Taylor would come in relief and duplicate the junior Brown with another three hit-less innings and four K’s.

The Panthers first-year head coach, Dunnam, called Taylor a great team player following Monday’s ballgame.

“No matter if its football, baseball, track or whatever Landun decides to do and puts his mind to, he’s gonna be great at it,” Dunnam said. “We love having him around. He’s one of those guys in the dugout that cracks jokes and gets everybody going. And on the field, whenever he steps into the batter’s box or whatever position we put him in, he locks in and is ready to go. So, he’s a great kid to have in the program, a great young man.”

Taylor went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. He finished with three RBI and three runs scored.

After facing Jourdanton in Geronimo on Monday, the Panthers will go down to Jourdanton later this week. Navarro will compete in the Jourdanton tournament starting on Friday.

(San Antonio) -- Over in San Antonio, the Seguin Matadors fell on the road in their season opener. Cornerstone Christian took down the

Matadors, 20-8 on Monday. Seguin will host the Matador baseball tournament at Smokey Joe Williams Field starting on Thursday.

(Marion) -- The Marion Bulldogs have their 2024 opener today. The Bulldogs will host Holy Cross this evening. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at Marion High School.

(Marion) -- Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs will be playing right next door to the baseball team when they host Lytle tonight. First pitch will take place at 7 p.m.

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors are hosting Bandera tonight. The game will get started at 7 O’clock at the Huber Ranch.

The Lady Mats will be in Kekaha, Hawaii for the 38th Annual Waimea High School Varsity Softball Tournament starting on Thursday.

Hopkins

Margaret Kyle Hopkins, age 92 of Seguin, Texas formerly of Beaumont, Texas passed away on February 12, 2024.

Margaret, also known as “Meg” and “Mom” was born in Beaumont, Texas June 30, 1931, to Jules and Brudge Kyle. She attended Mary Baldwin Women’s College for 1 year and then the University of Texas for 3 years where she was a Phi Beta Pi and studied language arts. While at the University of Texas, she met the love of her life, Wallace Kimbrough Hopkins (Wally).

Margaret married Wally on February 2, 1952, at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Beaumont, Texas. Soon after their wedding, they moved to El Centro California where they lived in a Quonset hut for 3 years while Wally served in the Navy. This is where they had their firstborn child, Pam. Many memories were shared about the Quonset hut time of their lives and how happy they were making the best of their time together. Margaret and Wally then moved to Beaumont, Texas where they welcomed their second and third-born children, Brudge and Kim, and spent the remainder of their married life together until Wally died in 2002. Margaret then moved to Seguin to be closer to family.

Margaret enjoyed being a member of the Beaumont Jr. League, Magnolia Garden Club, and served on the Garden Committee at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she loved beautifying the church grounds. Margaret and Wally raised their 3 children in the Episcopal Church and supported each of them throughout life by encouraging them and attending activities, school events, weddings, births, and child-raising support.

Margaret loved to travel, spend time in the kitchen, and gardening, and reading countless books. She traveled the world with Wally, her family, and friends creating countless special moments in all our lives. Margaret also loved to play tennis and had a great circle of tennis friends she played with weekly, including some of her and Wally’s best friends the Coffins and Dishman’s.

Margaret and Wally loved to spend weekends at Lakeway where they spent many summers water skiing on Lake Travis, playing tennis, and attending Longhorn football games with their children and grandchildren. When they were not at Lakeway, they enjoyed spending many summers in Breckenridge, Colorado with friends and family watching hummingbirds, playing tennis, and enjoying the cool Colorado air.

She spent much time with her family at El Paraiso Ranch in Bandera, Texas where she hosted the family and many generations of friends with her amazing recipes, keeping the hummingbird feeders filled, feeding deer and threw out thousands upon thousands of bluebonnet seeds. Though this bluebonnet effort was somewhat unsuccessful, she continued her efforts.

Margaret’s passion, vigor, and overall sunny disposition throughout her life brought joy to all those surrounding her. Her generosity, graciousness, kindness, and willingness to adventure set examples for many to follow.

She was never a quitter and lived a life of positivity, always making the most of any situation. Most recently, slowed by an aging body, she never complained, but instead continued to use her life doing things she loved. With the help of caregivers, she never stopped making gumbo, crawfish etouffee, baking rounds of cookies, and cakes, planting new flowers, and preparing her garden. She had already begun to prepare for this year’s tomato crop with new plants in the dirt. She compiled a cookbook in 2023 and a 2nd cookbook near completion.

Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, Jules and Brudge Kyle, her husband Wallace Kimbrough Hopkins, her daughter Pam Hopkins Lock, her sister, Mary Kyle, sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Hill, brother in law George Hopkins. She is survived by her son, Brudge Kyle Hopkins, daughter, Kim Hopkins Mueller and her husband Bernie, her sister-in-law, Jane Hopkins and her 5 grandchildren who she loved dearly, Julie Lock Lambert, her husband Peter, Christy Lock Sutton, her husband Andrew, Brian John Lock, Amber Mueller Wendt, her husband Michael, Kyle Joseph Mueller and his wife Alyssa.

Lastly, Margaret is survived by 5 great-grandchildren whom she adored, Henry and Clyde Lambert, Madison Sutton, Margaret, and Eleanor Wendt.

The family wishes to express our thanks to the wonderful caregivers, healthcare providers, and other individuals who have helped her continue to live life joyfully: Kimberly, Stacy, Rachael, Ingrid, Regina, Victoria, Gloria, Adrian, Josephine, Chon, and Manuel. We also want to thank Dr. Thomas Raetzsch and his staff for their care and love.

Though our hearts are deeply saddened that our Meg and precious Mother is no longer with us, we can’t help but celebrate that she is now in a heavenly place with her love Wally.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 23, 2024, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 680 Calder Ave., Beaumont, Texas 77701, followed by a reception at 870 19th Street, Beaumont Texas 77706 immediately following the service.

A celebration reception will also be held in Seguin on Sunday, February 25, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Lake Breeze Ski Lodge, 225 Ski Lodge Rd, McQueeney, Texas 78123.

Video Shows Alexei Navalny In Good Health Day Before Death (Russia) -- A video shows Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was apparently in good spirits the day before officials announced his death.

In a Thursday court appearance, Navalny was joking with the judge, asking him to “warm up” his bank account because he was running out of money due to fines. Navalny showed no obvious signs of poor health as he was seen speaking through bars on a TV screen in the courtroom.

According to the Russian Federal Prison Service, Navalny felt sick after a walk on Friday and lost consciousness. He was 47-years-old.

Study Links Antidepressants To Child Brain Problems (Aurora, CO) -- Taking antidepressants like Prozac while pregnant can hinder a child’s brain development and possibly cause mental disorders later in life. That’s the findings in a new study published last week in the journal Nature Communications. Experts say antidepressants that raise serotonin levels can influence how the brain learns and adjusts.

CDC: Long COVID Most Prevalent In West Virginia, Alabama, Montana (Atlanta, GA) -- A new CDC report shows the effects of long COVID are lingering longer among people who live in certain states. It’s most prevalent in West Virginia, Montana and Alabama, where about one in ten people surveyed reported experiencing the effects. Long COVID rates were nine--percent or higher in North Dakota, Oklahoma and Wyoming. The CDC says that overall, nearly seven-percent of U.S. adults have experienced it. Symptoms of long COVID, which is defined as lasting three months or more, include brain fog, persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, cough, rapid heart rate or cardiac arrhythmia. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Removed From EPA List (Kittery, ME) -- After three decades, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine has been removed from an Environmental Protection Agency list.

The shipyard was designated as a superfund site back in 1994 due to health and safety concerns. A total of seven areas near the shipyard were identified as possibly being contaminated. The Navy has agreed to do reviews every five years and submit reports to the EPA.
