Toast to Texas to move downtown

(Seguin) – Celebrating Texas Independence Day on March 2 will look a bit different in Seguin this year.

For years, the annual Toast to Texas program has been held on the steps of the historic Sebastopol House. However, this year, the event is moving to Central Park in downtown Seguin.

The event which raises a toast to Texas’ independence from Mexico is hosted each year by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Abishai Mercer Dickson-Seguin Chapter and the city of Seguin.

Group Vice President, Kreschendalyn Backus, says not only will the event be held downtown but this year’s celebration will include some extra guests and Lil Texan festivities beginning at 11 a.m.

“This year, it is different because it is on a Saturday, and it hasn’t

been on a Saturday in years, so we decided to invite and direct some of our activities towards the youngest Texans and we’ve got some booths out. The Daughter of the Republic of Texas, our district, is sending out the traveling trunk which has artifacts and interactive items from that time period of the Republic of Texas. The Magnolia House is coming out with a booth and other historic organizations in our county along with 4H Shooting Sports will have their project on Western Heritage. The county’s Master Naturalists will have a Texas Indian exhibit that they will be bringing out and the art league is coming down to do some arts and crafts with the kids. Teatro is going to dance and perform and their Mariachi at 11:15,” said Backus.

West side residents to spruce up their homes this weekend

(Seguin) – Residents on the city’s west side will be sprucing up their neighborhood. A band of volunteers including a large group of students at Texas Lutheran University students, will be hitting the streets for Saturday’s annual Spring Clean-Up/Day of the Dogs Service Day.

The effort to help their neighbors cleanup their homes was started years ago by Seguin City Councilman Chris Rangel and his wife Ileen who live in the Dolle Street area. It has since grown into a partnership with the city of Seguin and Texas Lutheran University.

Ileen says cleanups restore the environment and empower people and all while connecting neighborhood communities. She says their belief in creating a safe and nice neighborhood started well before her husband was elected to the city council. She says this is a testament that making a difference can begin with anyone.

“I see it all the time. There’s a huge change that has happened since we’ve started this almost 12-13 years ago. They start seeing that sign go up on the fence post that says that the clean-up is happening and all of a sudden, you start seeing everybody putting the things that they themselves can’t take (to) the big trash or just wanting to do their spring clean-up or fall clean-up and know that this is an opportunity for them to get rid of things that is a little harder for people to get rid of when we don’t have the help,” said Rangel.

Ileen says what makes the clean-ups even more special is the partnership with TLU students. She says together, the effort has made a significant impact and has reaffirmed the students’ residence in Seguin.

“This year, we have about 65. During the spring,

we usually have the football team and the soccer team and baseball. We have several different organizations that are helping us -- the softball team.

There’s been so many TLU sports people (in) the spring one because usually in the fall, they are busy with their sports. So, we have a lot of them doing their team building. This is their community too. They are housed in the same neighborhood, so they really love doing it and we want to make sure they are having fun because if they aren’t having fun, what’s the use of doing it,” said Rangel.

Ileen says volunteers will be going door-to-door to assist residents with items to dispose of properly. Residents are also encouraged to bring their unwanted items from around their home and yard for disposal at the corner of Dolle and Jones Streets. She says Saturday is also a great opportunity to join the volunteers and help make a difference.

“If they see they have a neighbor that needs help and they can bring the stuff for them, I say if you can help your neighbor, please do because that’s the only way that your neighbor is going to get help. Sometimes, people worry about well they have children or they have somebody else.

Well, if their children really wanted to help or they could help, they would have done it. So, if you see somebody who needs help and you can do it, I strongly say ‘please help them!’ We are supposed to be here to help our neighbors,” said Rangel.

The clean-up will be held Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Today marks last day for early voting

(Seguin) -- Today is the last day for early voting in Guadalupe County. Early voting will end today for both the Democratic and Republican primary elections.

Voters can cast their ballots at any one of the six early voting polling locations.

Those polling locations include:

• The Guadalupe County Elections Office in Seguin at 215 S. Milam St.;

• The Guadalupe County

On March 2, 1836, the Texas Declaration of Independence was voted unanimously and signed at Washington-on-the-Brazos by 59 Anglo and Tejano Delegates representing the people of Texas.

Organizers say for the past 38 years, the Toast to Texas celebration has traditionally been a short program in which elected officials raise a glass of spring water in celebration of Texas Independence.

Backus says this year, the occasion celebrates 188 years since settlers in

Mexican Texas officially declared independence from Mexico creating the Republic of Texas.

“At 1:30, the normal ceremony will start with (State Representative) John Kuempel as our MC and Judge (Kyle) Kutscher doing the toast and the goal is always for Judge Kutscher to do the toast around 2 o’ clock. We ask that the churches ring their bell at 2 o’clock for one minute,” said Backus.

The ceremony encourages all residents to come out and celebrate this important piece of Texas history. It also is a reminder for Texans all over the world to recognize the importance

Early voting will be held today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Navarro multi-sport student-athlete Colton Schuelke makes college football commitment official

(Geronimo) -– After two seasons as an all-district selection at two different positions, Navarro High School senior Colton Schuelke will play college football at NCAA Division III McMurry University.

Schuelke made a commitment to the private Methodist school located in Abilene during a ceremony at the high school on Wednesday morning.

As a junior in 2022, Schuelke was an honorable mention all-district selection at wide receiver for the Panthers. In his senior year, he became a second team all-district quarterback. When it comes to which position he’ll play on the next level, Schuelke says he’s ready to play either role.

“I went to (the McMurry) camp as a wide receiver. I did some good things there, but they told me that they like my arm, that they want me to develop there but they also want me to develop my wide receiver aspect,” Schuelke said. “So who knows, I could be a hybrid. I could play wide receiver. I could play quarterback. It’s in God’s hands and I’m there.”

Schuelke threw for 839 yards operating the Navarro Slot-T offense this past season. He tossed eight touchdown passes and did not throw an interception.

Navarro head football coach Rod Blount lauded Schuelke’s work ethic and his willingness to do anything to help the team. Blount says he feels Schuelke will be a great addition for the McMurry program.

“I think he’ll excel with what they’re wanting to do with him, using him as a wide

receiver. But if they get in a bind, he can always step in and play quarterback,” Blount said. “He’s done a great job for us in all of our programs, football, basketball, baseball. So, we’re excited to see him move on and can’t wait to see the success he’s gonna have.”

In addition to his athletic prowess, Schuelke excelled in other school endeavors. He was a member of the Mighty Panther Marching Band. He’s also participated in the school’s CTE program becoming certified in phlebotomy and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Schuelke plans to study kinesiology at McMurry. He intends to go to graduate school and study sports medicine.

The McMurry football team will compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2024. The War Hawks are led by head coach Jordan Neal.

On Monday, Schuelke’s teammate Houston Berry officially signed a letter of intent to play football at West Texas A&M University in Canyon near Amarillo.

Stephen Keith “Steve” Tschoepe, age 65, beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, was called to his eternal resting place on February 25, 2024.

Steve was born on March 6, 1958, in Seguin, Texas, to Barbara Jean (Blay) and Allen Ray Tschoepe. His love for his community grew as he did. By the time Steve graduated from Seguin High School as a proud Matador of the Class of 1976, he had already made a name for himself in our small town. He worked at the Seguin Gazette as a photographer and reporter, always wanting to be the first one “in the know.” He eventually went on to work at Lone Star Printing, where he worked as a salesman. This job was fitting for him because as much as HE KNEW, he also wanted EVERYONE ELSE TO KNOW – thus the power of the written word. His last professional endeavor was with Century 21 D&D United/Century 21 The Hills, where he worked as a realtor. This job was the pinnacle of Stephen, whether he realized what he was getting himself into initially or not. He loved Seguin so much that he wanted everyone else to move here and love it just as much as he did, and he wanted to help them along in that process.

If you asked Steve though, his main job was taking care of the Texas Theater. On any given weekend, he was at the theater ensuring that every rental went seamlessly. Steve’s passion for the Texas Theatre infected everything he did, so much so that a majority of the Tschoepe/Van Booven family events since Steve’s first involvement with the Texas Theatre have been held at that exact location, including surprise birthday parties and wedding showers.

If Steve was not at his office at the Texas Theatre or Century 21, he could be found out and about in the community pursuing several other endeavors. He selflessly volunteered his time for any causes that stirred his embers. He was an usher at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church for many years, in addition to serving on the Church Council there. He served on GVEC’s Power Up Grants Review Committee and was a board member for both the Seguin Education Foundation and the Seguin Conservation Society. He volunteered countless hours with the Guadalupe County Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program, formerly known as Junior Miss. (His niece was third runner-up in the program one year, and Steve could not have been prouder.) Steve was a member of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce and was involved with the Seguin Economic Development Corporation. He even served as City Councilman, even though his family has always jokingly called him the “mayor” of Seguin.

While his resume is impressive, Steve’s true inheritance is the love that he had for his family and friends. You could guarantee that Steve would always be there for you; he always showed up. He was a man of his word, and a man to give his word. He never made excuses and never felt sorry for himself, no matter what he was going through behind the scenes. He had a heart of gold, and no occasion was left unacknowledged. He believed in the importance of

traditions and carried on his mother’s love of holidays. Whether it was a hand-decorated Valentine’s Day cake or a special Christmas appearance by Santa, Stephen knew how to make you feel special. When you spent time with Stephen, life slowed down. You felt transported back to the “good old days” when the only thing that mattered was spending time together.

Stephen loved a good prank, and his nemesis was usually his brother, Douglas. Every family event became the Steve and Doug Comedy Show, with everyone in stitches at their antics. Stephen and Douglas were more than brothers; they were best friends. This was also true of their sister, Tina, although the boys did cut her a *little* slack.

The culmination of this love, however, lay with the birth of his nieces, nephews, and great-nephews, for whom he assumed a pseudograndfatherly role. Uncle Steve was the proudest uncle around. He was at every shower, birthday party, holiday, parade, and recital. He supported every fundraiser and always made sure he was being fair to all. He even helped orchestrate the eventual marriage of his niece and nephew-in-law, scheming amongst others to set the two up for years. What a feather in his hat! It was truly a blessing to have such a strong role model walking alongside us each day, showing us how to serve God, our family, and our community.

Family and friends of Steve will all remember him for his smile, his kindness, and his care. What a legacy to have witnessed unfold over these last 65 years – a life well-lived by a one-of-a-kind man.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his sister, Tina Van Booven and husband Steve; brother, Doug Tschoepe; niece Ashley Schriewer, husband Zann, great nephew Kent; nephew Tyler Van Booven, wife Hallye, and great nephew Harris; nephew Logan Van Booven, wife Annie, and great niece or nephew due in May; aunts, Betty Spell and Janet England; uncles, Vernon Blay, Jr. and Roger Blay; numerous cousins, other loving family members and an entire community of friends.

Stephen was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Emanuel’s Lutheran Church with the Reverend Marcus Bigott presiding. Interment will follow in the San Geronimo Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Texas Theater.

Pallbearers will be Tyler Van Booven, Logan Van Booven, Zann Schriewer, Dan Garza, Richard England, and Donnie Barnett.

Lee Roy Hugo Schievelbein, age 89 of Seguin, passed away on February 26, 2024. Lee Roy was born on October 22, 1934, in Guadalupe County, Texas to Lucille (Friedeck) and Robert Ferdinand Schievelbein Sr.

Lee Roy loved his Lord and Savior and went peacefully home with him while his children were by his side. He also loved his family very much and always put them first, whether that was leading Boy Scout Troop 107 as “Mr. Chief”, or longtime sponsor with Jody of Luther League at Emmanuel’s Lutheran, and scheduling vacations with Jody and one grandchild at a time going wherever the grandchild chose. 9 times out of 10 it was a week at the beach. As much as he loved his grandchildren, he loved his great-grandchildren even more and loved to interact with them as much as possible.

Lee Roy was a 46+ year employee of SMI with most of those years in Sales. Well known for his “storytelling,” some call them jokes, Lee Roy had many of his customers who called daily just to get the “story of the day” and usually ended up buying more steel while he had them on the phone.

Lee Roy was very appreciative and thankful to everyone who cared for him during the last few months. He made sure to always express his gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, and caregivers, especially his daughter Cathy, who put her life on hold so she could be his primary caregiver.

Lee Roy and Jody enjoyed membership in the Happy Soles Square Dance Club, participating in the Roadrunner Camping Group, and attending events their grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated in.

Ewald VITAL STATISTICS

With perfect grammar and a hint of aristocracy, Nancy was seldom without comment and left no one wondering of her opinion. With far-ranging interests from history to travel, there was no need for Google when Nancy was in the room. Although occasionally wrong, she was never in doubt.

From talking with Nancy, one might have deduced she was tutored in Buckingham Palace; however, she was born in the small town of Bogata in northeast Texas on July 8th, 1942, to Jack and Commie Rhoads. She attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, and, after graduating, moved to Seguin with her parents. In 1963, she met her future husband, Henry, while spending time at the Lake Breeze Ski Lodge on Lake McQueeney. Henry and Nancy were wed on August 1st, 1964.

Throughout her years in Seguin, Nancy was active in many groups, clubs and organizations. Although she would be ashamed to admit it now, in the 1960’s, she and Henry were heavily involved in the local democratic party, leading to a lifetime of interest in politics and government. She was a longtime member and occasional president of the Seguin Shakespeare Club, where she could let her fantasies of royal heritage blossom. She was also active with the Seguin Tejas Club, several local book clubs, the Crystal Clear Water board and the Vestry of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Nancy served as president of the Seguin ISD School Board where her often colorful commentary earned her many friends and an occasional foe.

Henry and Nancy loved to travel. Throughout their 38-year marriage, they

traveled the continental US in Henry’s different airplanes and had wonderful adventures. They also traveled internationally, spending time in England and Germany over several visits. In the late 1990’s, they bought a ranch in Marfa, Texas where they had great fun building a ranch house and living like Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor.

Forever a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and her TCU Horned Frogs, she loved watching football, but also enjoyed playing tennis with her friends. In the 1980’s, she spent many summer days at Max Starcke Park playing doubles tennis or by the pool at the Ski Lodge with her forever-best-friend, Elizabeth Walker.

After Henry’s death in 2002, Nancy enjoyed cooking and spending time with her many grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of her friends, playing bridge and spending time in various book clubs or with other church members.

Nancy was loved by those around her and will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Phillip Ewald and her Husband Henry. She is survived by her brother Robert Rhoads of Dallas, her daughter Donna Gregg and husband George of Colorado Springs, Donna’s sons James and Dane, and her son John Ewald of Seguin and his daughters, Caroline, Jacqueline, Annabelle, Mary Claire, Savannah and Margaret.

A memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeogh Hall.

Private interment will be held in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Nolte, Seguin, Texas, 78155.

Joyce Kelso Willis Lee, formerly of San Antonio, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, in Seguin. She was born in San Antonio to parents Winchester Kelso and Erna Wagner Kelso.

Joyce attended St. Mary’s Hall until her senior year, graduating from Mt. Vernon in Washington, D.C. She then attended Hockaday Jr. College, receiving an associate degree in Business. After Hockaday, she went to the University of Texas in Austin and was a Kappa Kappa Gamma pledge.

Returning to San Antonio, Joyce met the first love of her life, John Mitchell Willis, Jr., US Army, Medical Corps. They were married in 1947 and were blessed with two children, John Mitchell Willis, III, and Joyce Ann Willis. When her husband died in 1962, Joyce moved back to San Antonio. Here she raised her children and became active in many organizations: The Battle of Flowers, Monte Vista Garden Club (past president), The Forum (past president), Timely Topics (past president), Junior League, Christ Episcopal Church Altar Guild, St. Luke’s Knitting Guild, Harry Jersig Hearing Center, Boy’s Town, and Morningside Ministries just to mention a few.

In 1993, Joyce married the second love of her life, John Thomas Lee. With this marriage, Joyce was blessed with three adult sons: John Scott Lee, Douglas

Lee, and Timothy Lee. Joyce and John Lee had 25 years together and spent that time traveling, cruising, and enjoying each other’s company. John died in 2019, and shortly after, Joyce moved to Seguin to be near her daughter and son-in-law.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands John Willis and John Lee, her brother Winchester Kelso, her son John Mitchell Willis, III, and her grandson Daryl Richey.

Left behind to celebrate her legacy are her children Joyce Willis Richey (Don), John Scott Lee (Rob), Doug Lee (Nancy), and Timothy Lee; grandchildren (who knew her as GranLady) Molly Willis Lopez (Danilo), Leanne Richey Boddie (Bryce), Jennifer Willis McNeil (Mason), Amanda Lee Edwards (Matt), and Katherine Lee Mullins (Nathan); and great-grandchildren Endie Boddie, Makeda Boddie, Leigh Edwards, and Adam Edwards as well as her beloved nieces, nephew, their families, longtime friends, and her St. Andrew’s Family.

A memorial service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess and the Reverend Patricia Riggins officiating. A reception will follow in McKeogh Hall.

Antiviral Drug May Save Lives In COVID Outbreaks

(Austin, TX) -- The use of an antiviral drug after a COVID-19 diagnosis could save lives and money. University of Texas researchers examined the use of the drug Paxlovid based on NIH data from high risk patients who took it during the 2022 omicron variant wave. The UT report says widespread use would have reduced hospitalizations by the hundreds of thousands. The savings is estimated to be anywhere from 57 to 170-billion dollars. The research suggests Paxlovid use could save approximately 30-thousand lives during a major outbreak.

South Florida Congresswoman Calls For Firing Of State Surgeon General (Sunrise, FL) -- A South Florida congresswoman is calling for the immediate termination of Florida’s Surgeon General amid the measles outbreak in Broward County. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz says Dr. Joseph Ladapo should be declaring a public health emergency and requiring all non-vaccinated children to quarantine for three weeks as per CDC guidance. Ladapo, who was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis, has granted parents the authority to determine how long their children should stay home from school. There are currently nine cases confirmed in Broward County, with another case confirmed in Central Florida’s Polk County.

13 Children Have Died Of Flu This Season In NY-NJ (New York, NY) -- Thirteen children have died of flu so far this season in New York and New Jersey. There’ve been 11 confirmed pediatric deaths in New York but no ages given. New Jersey is reporting two deaths in children between the ages of five and seventeen, including one in a child with significant health issues. Flu has been widespread in both states for three months, compared to two months last season. Symptoms can include fever and chills, sore throat and cough, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headache, fatigue and vomiting or diarrhea. Health officials are urging people to get their flu shots if they haven’t already.

Man Is Fifth Industrial Worker To Die In Michigan In 2024 (Macomb County, MI) -- A 63-year-old die setter is the fifth confirmed industrial worker death in Michigan this year. The man died from injuries dustained at his Macomb County workplace. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration says on January 24th the worker was standing on a semi-truck flatbed trailer, attempting to move a heavy cart to the side of the trailer. The cart, which was holding a heavy die fixture, fell off the trailer onto the man. He was rushed to a hospital but died of his injuries a month later.

Non-Profit Expo

The Guadalupe County Fair will host a Non-Profit Expo from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24 at the Seguin Event Complex, located at 950 S. Austin St. There will be booths, fun things for kids, door prizes, and a big equipment rodeo. The expo is free and booth space for non-profits are free.
