City of Seguin continues to roll out plans

(Seguin) - With housing developers and new retail springing up across the city, one might question whether the city is ready for the growth that has officially arrived. Today, the Seguin Daily News begins a three-part series taking a closer look at the evidence of growth throughout the city. Today, the SDN dives into the details of growing smart.

Josh Schneuker, the executive director of Seguin’s Economic Development Corporation, says the city’s objective has always been to grow responsibly. In fact, he says being ready and planning for this growth started years ago.

“We are obviously making sure that we grow in a responsible manner where we can continue to ensure that we have the infrastructure and

the utilities to accommodate that growth and then also continue to support our existing residents. I mean it’s critical. That is something that we look at with every different development that comes into the city. We never want to get ourselves in a pinch where we are going to somehow put our water supply in danger, put something in danger just because we are not thinking about that but we’ve just got a fantastic staff, I think, at the city from our utilities department to our engineering staff to our planning folks and city management that we are all working together to make sure that those are things we are thinking about and we are making those investments right now,” said Schneuker.

Elections office recaps PRIMARY ELECTION

(Seguin) -- The number of voters who turned out for the March Joint Primary Election was not exactly record-breaking as initially predicted.

That’s according to Lisa Hayes, the Guadalupe County Elections Administrator.

“Our turnout was a little lower overall than the last presidential primary. I think we were looking at a difference of this primary, we had about a 21 percent turnout and the last presidential primary was around the 26 percent turnout. So, we did see a slight drop in that turnout and I really don’t know what to attribute that to but that’s what the numbers tell us. Overall though, everything went really well. We are glad people came out to vote. We always want

as many voters as possible so we just hope that the voters keep coming out to vote and make their voice heard. That is why we are here,” said Hayes.

While the numbers were slightly lower, the overall process, according to Hayes, was smooth.

“From our end, it seemed smoother overall. I mean there’s always going to be a couple of little things where we might have lines taking a little longer, equipment slowdowns -- not the voting equipment but anytime you are using electronic poll books and things of that nature, you are at the mercy of some of the technology but overall, everything went really well. Our poll workers as always are wonderful to work the polls for us and adapt and overcome and they

do a really good job. We couldn’t do elections without them so they are always appreciated. But overall, everything went well. From our perspective, we thought that it was a pretty busy election day but I have heard from others that they said that the polls weren’t as busy as they expected. Our phones ring all day long non-stop because we have 36 locations calling us so for us, it always looks a little different than from those going to the polls,” said Hayes.

While the process was smooth inside, Hayes says there were a few complaints about what happened outside the polling locations and hopes that things will improve during future elections.

Schneuker says most of what the community sees today are things that have been in the works.

“Things take some time. I mean these projects - I know we’ve talked about them for quite a while now but things like Cordova Road and Rudeloff Road, those are going to start moving forward here to increase roadway capacity for the housing growth that we are seeing in that area. Our Geronimo Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, we are going to have our groundbreaking ceremony and we are going to be able to double the treatment capacity that that facility can handle. Obviously other outside entities like TxDOT see the growth that is happening here in Seguin and throughout the region and that is why we are seeing the I10 expansion project. You have the other things like the State Highway 46 expansion project that is being looked at right now as well. So, there’s a lot of work and there’s a lot of collaboration not only amongst different city departments but with other outside entities to make sure that we are all on the same page with where we are headed as a community and to make sure that we can continue to handle the growth and grow in a responsible manner but also ensuring that we can remain economically competitive for years to come,” said Schneuker.

Schneuker believes Seguin benefits from following surrounding communities, which have grown significantly over the last 5 to 10 years. He says the city has been able to watch and learn from these cities and what not to do.

“We brought folks in, new city staff that worked in those cities like New Braunfels and San Marcos and Schertz and Cibolo. So, they’ve been in these environments and had to work on projects within their previous work experience for rapidly growing communities and now, it’s Seguin’s turn and we are able to really tap into their expertise and their knowledge and how they handle this in their previous work lives and take that experience and implement it into what we are doing here in Seguin,” said

“I think one of the main things we saw at the polling locations and it was not at all the polling locations so I want to be clear about that but electioneering can be a problem for us voters who are electioneering wearing candidate gear and things like that -- that really wasn’t a problem. We did have a lot of very enthusiastic supporters of different campaigns and candidates and I think we saw a little more voter complaints about those candidates and those campaign sign holders. They were outside the 100 foot mark which is the law but they were very enthusiastic in supporting their candidates and I

While some fear or even object to the city’s fast, rapid growth, Schneuker says growth for Seguin was just inevitable.

“So again, we are very fortunate I think to have really amazing city staff that I think obviously knows how to work around all the growth that we are seeing and work with the developers and really have these investments and these projects that are -- I just think a win-win for the community. So, I think the future is bright for Seguin. The growth is going to continue. It’s going to happen just based on where we are located. It’s hard not to grow when you only 35 minutes outside of San Antonio and an hour south of Austin. I mean you are really in the heart of the one of the fastest growing mega regions in the United States. It’s just a matter, again, that we are collaborating with other entities and agencies and working hard here within the city to address the needs of our citizens,” said Schneuker.

According to officials, Seguin’s growth shows no signs of slowing down. Over the past 10 years, the city’s population has grown nearly 25 percent, and since 2020, it has grown 13.5 percent.

Seguin is on the same fast-paced growth schedule reported in surrounding communities such as New Braunfels and Kyle.

think we did see a little bit of voter disgruntlement with the way some of that went and was something that was outside our control but we did see more of that than we normally do and that was a little bit disappointing. Anytime the voters call us complaining because they felt intimidated, it is a concern for us. So, I wish we had seen a little less of that and I’m hoping that moving forward, we don’t have so many issues with that,” said Hayes.

While they await the canvassing of votes in this election, Hayes says her office is preparing for the next two scheduled elections this spring

“We will have a primary run-off definitely in the Republican Party on

May 28 and then of course, between now and then, we also have May 4 cities and schools election to prepare for and so that’s really what we are working on right now is to get ready for those elections and then we will roll into the May 28 Primary Run-off but we will have more information as we get passed the canvassed dates from this election,” said Hayes.

Despite the number of voters who turned out, Hayes says the overall number of registered people in Guadalupe did increase.

The number of registered voters in Guadalupe County is 123,857, compared to 117,790 this time last year.

Area high school baseball and softball roundup

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors fell to 1-1 in District 26-5A play with a 7-1 setback to Smithson Valley on Friday night at the Fields at Huber Ranch.

First team all-state pitcher Madeline Haun struck out 12 for the Rangers. The junior went the distance in the circle to pick up the win.

The Lady Matadors got their lone run across in the third inning when Morgan Schultze led off with a single. Brylee Weiding then doubled to move Schultze to third. Schultze would then score on a wild pitch.

The Rangers would bat around in the fifth inning and plate all their runs in the game to get the victory. Smithson Valley improved to 1-1 on the young district season.

In the field for Seguin, Lady Mat third baseman D’yanna Priestly had a couple of web gems at the hot corner, making a diving catch on a Smithson Valley bunt attempt in the third inning. She also made a diving stop on a harder

grounder to steal a base hit.

The Lady Matadors will look to get back in the win column in district when they head to Kerrville-Tivy tomorrow afternoon to take on the 2-0 Lady Antlers. First pitch takes place at 2 O’clock.

(Marion) -- The Marion Lady Bulldogs took games from Natalia and Karnes City on Friday and Saturday. Marion beat the Lady Mustangs 7-6 at home on a walk-off error in the seventh on Friday and then blasted the Lady Badgers, 18-1 on the road on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs are off for Spring Break, they’ll open District 26-3A play against Cole at home next Tuesday.

(San Marcos) -- The Seguin Matadors fell in their final two games at the San Marcos baseball tournament on

Friday, dropping a 12-1 decision to Harker Heights and an 8-5 game to host San Marcos.

The Mats will be back on the diamond Tuesday to open up their district schedule. Seguin will travel to Pieper to take on the Warriors at 3 O’clock on Tuesday afternoon.

(Hallettsville) -- The Navarro Panthers also dropped their final two games at the Hallettsville tournament on Friday. Calhoun took down the Panthers, 15-6 in the first game and then 2023 Class 2A state finalist Shiner squeaked past Navarro, 3-2 in the second game.

Navarro will travel to Poth to take on the Pirates Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Children Fentanyl Exposures Up 449% (Portland, OR) -- The number of children treated for exposure to fentanyl nationwide is up 449 percent. Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University analyzed data from all U.S. Poison Centers. In 2016, there were just ten cases of exposure in children younger than six. By 2023, that number increased to 539 children. When exposed to fentanyl they can lose consciousness, stop breathing and suffer brain damage. Eighty-two percent of the unintentional exposures happened in homes. Researchers are urging fentanyl users to keep the drugs out children’s reach.

Ozempic Is Center Of Health Debate In City Council (New York, NY) -- There’s a push for better health messaging for weight loss drugs in New York City. City Councilwoman Julie Menin says the health department should make sure everyone knows the risks when it comes to using drugs like Ozempic for weight loss. More than onemillion people are diabetic, and Menin says those people should be in front of the line when it comes to getting access to drugs like Ozempic. The bill introduced by Menin calls on the health department to craft better messaging that describes how the weight loss medicine works.

(Washington, DC) -- A new study shows a single dose of LSD could provide lasting anxiety relief. The FDA has granted breakthrough therapy status to an LSD formula from Mind Medicine Inc. to treat generalized anxiety disorder. The study found the drug was generally well tolerated with most adverse events rated as mild to moderate, transient and occurring on dosing days. It found the most common adverse effects when patients first took the drug were hallucinations, euphoric mood and nausea among others. Mind Medicine plans to meet with the FDA in the next few months to start an expanded clinical program in the second half of this year.

New Jersey Officials “Concerned” Over Mumps Outbreak (Flemington, NJ) -- An outbreak of mumps in New Jersey has health officials concerned and recommending MMR shots. The Health Department is currently investigating eight suspected cases of mumps in one family cluster in Hunterdon County. Officials believe this cluster is connected to international travel. Symptoms of mumps include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and appetite loss, appearing later as a swelling of the salivary glands or puffy cheeks and a tender, swollen jaw. There’s also been one confirmed measles case.

Registration Open for City Summer Day Camp
