Voters elect NEW

Guadalupe County Sheriff

Pair of constables hold onto their seats

(Seguin) -- There’s indeed a new Sheriff in town. Joshua Ray, the chief deputy of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, earned substantial support during Tuesday’s GOP Primary Election. Ray defeated challenger Patrick Pinder for the position of Guadalupe County Sheriff. Ray received 13,583 of the votes cast while Pinder received 4,515 votes.

Since there is no Democratic challenger during the November General Election, Ray will assume the new role as Sheriff in January 2025.

Ray, who will replace longtime Sheriff Arnold Zwicke, says he was overwhelmed by the incredible level of support that was shown by voters.

Commissioner Pct. 1 race headed to a run-off

(Seguin) -- The race for Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1 is headed to a run-off.

Jaqueline “Jackie” Ott and Dustin Engelke, one and two respectively, were the top two vote getters in Tuesday’s GOP Primary Election.

Although the pair led the pack of five candidates, neither was able to get close to the 50 percent plus one majority resulting in the run-off race.

Ott received 1,915 of the votes cast while Engelke received 1,610 votes. Rounding out the pack was Clint Taft with 903 votes; Bryan Underwood with 869 votes and James Ransdell with 800 votes.

Both look to replace longtime Commissioner Greg Seidenberger who chose not to seek re-election.

Ott says she is humbled by the number of folks who came out to show their support on Tuesday and looks forward to continuing her campaign.

“I’m really excited for the opportunity. I’m ready to work hard

again. And I just want to congratulate everyone. It was really such a pleasure to get to know some of the folks in this race and I’m glad for that opportunity too and just ready to work hard and earn the votes again in May,” said Ott.

Engelke says he too is appreciative to all those who came out to the polls. He says the work continues.

“I’m excited. I’m really humbled and honored from the results ––especially from the precinct one voters. I’m super happy to be in the position that I’m in, and I really appreciate all the support that I’ve gotten over the last several days and several months. I’m going to continue the same things.

Texas House race results in run-off

(Seguin) -- The campaigning continues for the Texas District 44 seat in the House of Representatives. Incumbent John Kuempel, of Seguin, is headed to a runoff election with challenger Alan Schoolcraft, of McQueeney.

The margin for the two top vote getters was effectively a two man race throughout Tuesday's GOP Primary Election. Both, however, were unable to reach the 50 percent plus one level to win the clear majority from their voters in both Gonzales and Guadalupe Counties.

Leading the pack of four candidates the entire time was Schoolcraft with 10,910 votes. Kuempel followed closely behind with 10,213 votes.

Rounding out the group of candidates were David Freimarck with 523 of the votes cast and Greg Switzer with 1,030 votes.

The run-off election is slated for Tuesday, May 28.

“I’m just amazingly thankful. Everybody that knows me, knows that I’m a man of faith and God’s blessed me in so many ways and he continues to do that. I’ve got so many supporters, so many family –– my wife for standing next to me and being with me through this journey. And I can’t even begin to say how much I appreciate Sheriff Zwicke and his leadership and his trust in me and everything he’s done. And then just the voters of Guadalupe County placing their trust in me after they’ve had the same man leading the helm for so long. I’m so extremely thankful for this opportunity,” Ray said.

Ray for the last year has served under the leadership of Sheriff Zwicke. Ray says he is honored to have learned the ropes in hopes of building upon Zwicke’s success over the last 20 years.

“We’ve got a lot of growth coming to our community and we’ve got challenges, but we have a very good sheriff’s office, and we have outstanding men and women of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s office that go out every single day and work tirelessly to serve and protect our community. It’s been one of my greatest privileges in my life to be able to lead them as the Chief Deputy under Sheriff Zwicke, but to be able to continue that as the Sheriff and lead them into the future –– I can’t say enough,” Ray said.

Commissioner, continued.

My plan is making sure that I run a campaign focused on myself and that is providing the best possible outcome for Guadalupe County. I’m just excited to be in this position,” said Engelke.

While Underwood and Ransdell were unavailable for comment, Taft was able to thank those who showed

Ray also thanked Pinder who currently serves as the Guadalupe County Emergency Management Coordinator and Fire Marshal. He says Pinder should be commended for running a clean race.

“I also want to extend some thanks to Patrick Pinder and the race that we had. We didn’t have a lot of problems in our race, you know, there was really no negative campaigning, so I’m very appreciative of that. It was a clean race. I’m thankful for that,” Ray said.

Pinder was unavailable for comment following Tuesday’s results.

Meanwhile, a pair of incumbents on Tuesday also secured their respective Guadalupe County Constable positions by picking up the GOP nomination in their race.

Incumbent Jeff Large defeated challenger Jim O. Wolverton II for the position of Guadalupe County Constable Pct. 3.

Large received 2,924 of the votes cast while Wolverton received 1,234 votes.

Earning the nomination for Guadalupe County Constable Pct. 4 was Harvey Faulkner. Faulkner defeated challenger J.C. Batey. Faulkner led the race with 2,932 of the votes cast. Batey followed behind with 1,299 votes. Like the sheriff’s race, both constable positions do not face Democratic challengers in November.

up to the polls on his behalf. Taft says he appreciates the support and the experience of throwing his name in the hat.

“I just want to thank everyone that supported me. It’s been an experience for me. I’ve never done this before and I’m happy that I gave it a shot. I decided to run because I wanted to serve my neighbors and make a difference. I didn’t come out

on top, and that’s alright. It doesn’t change the love that I have for this community,” said Taft.

The GOP Primary Runoff election is slated for Tuesday, May 28. The winner of the run-off will then advance to the November election where they will face both Democratic nominee Nahomie Alanis and Libertarian candidate Nolan Schmidt.

With perfect grammar and a hint of aristocracy, Nancy was seldom without comment and left no one wondering of her opinion. With far-ranging interests from history to travel, there was no need for Google when Nancy was in the room. Although occasionally wrong, she was never in doubt.

From talking with Nancy, one might have deduced she was tutored in Buckingham Palace; however, she was born in the small town of Bogata in northeast Texas on July 8th, 1942, to Jack and Commie Rhoads. She attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, and, after graduating, moved to Seguin with her parents. In 1963, she met her future husband, Henry, while spending time at the Lake Breeze Ski Lodge on Lake McQueeney. Henry and Nancy were wed on August 1st, 1964.

Throughout her years in Seguin, Nancy was active in many groups, clubs and organizations. Although she would be ashamed to admit it now, in the 1960’s, she and Henry were heavily involved in the local democratic party, leading to a lifetime of interest in politics and government. She was a longtime member and occasional president of the Seguin Shakespeare Club, where she could let her fantasies of royal heritage blossom. She was also active with the Seguin Tejas Club, several local book clubs, the Crystal Clear Water board and the Vestry of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Nancy served as president of the Seguin ISD School Board where her often colorful commentary earned her many friends and an occasional foe.

Henry and Nancy loved to travel. Throughout their 38-year marriage, they

traveled the continental US in Henry’s different airplanes and had wonderful adventures. They also traveled internationally, spending time in England and Germany over several visits. In the late 1990’s, they bought a ranch in Marfa, Texas where they had great fun building a ranch house and living like Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor.

Forever a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and her TCU Horned Frogs, she loved watching football, but also enjoyed playing tennis with her friends. In the 1980’s, she spent many summer days at Max Starcke Park playing doubles tennis or by the pool at the Ski Lodge with her forever-best-friend, Elizabeth Walker.

After Henry’s death in 2002, Nancy enjoyed cooking and spending time with her many grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of her friends, playing bridge and spending time in various book clubs or with other church members.

Nancy was loved by those around her and will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Phillip Ewald and her Husband Henry. She is survived by her brother Robert Rhoads of Dallas, her daughter Donna Gregg and husband George of Colorado Springs, Donna’s sons James and Dane, and her son John Ewald of Seguin and his daughters, Caroline, Jacqueline, Annabelle, Mary Claire, Savannah and Margaret.

A memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Chapel at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeogh Hall.

Private interment will be held in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Nolte, Seguin, Texas, 78155.

You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.

Walgreens, CVS To Start Selling Abortion Pills This Month

(Undated) -- The two largest pharmacy chains in the U.S. will begin selling abortion pills as soon as this month. Walgreens and CVS will start selling Mifepristone at certain pharmacies in states where it’s legal to do so. The two companies received certification from the FDA to dispense the pill. CVS will start filling prescriptions in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the next few weeks and will expand to more states where allowed by law. Walgreens plans to fill prescriptions in Pennsylvania, New York, California, Illinois and Massachusetts. The chains will not provide the pills by mail.

Deaths From Drinking Increased In The U.S. During The Pandemic

(Undated) -- Alcohol-related deaths surged during the pandemic. That’s according to numbers from the CDC, which found that there were over 480 deaths per day from excessive drinking in the U.S. during the height of the pandemic. Officials say social isolation, stress, and delays in getting medical care could have been a factor. Alcohol carryout and home deliveries were also more available, officials added. The CDC says the spike in deaths could give states a reason to make alcohol less accessible.

Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings Recalled

(Undated) -- Chicken dumplings sold at Trader Joe’s are being recalled because they might contain pieces of plastic. Officials say over 61-thousand pounds of the Trader Joe’s Steamed Chicken Soup Dumplings are being recalled because they could have plastic from a permanent marker pen. The product was produced in December, but consumers might still have it in their freezers. The chicken dumplings should not be eaten.

Missouri Cannabis Sales in Danger While Packaging Gets Approved

(Jefferson City, MO) - Missouri cannabis products have brought in a little over one-billion-dollars in sales this past year. But some producers say new state packaging regulations are causing significant delays, which threaten profits for retailers. State Health Department Spokeswoman Lisa Cox says the new rules are intended to educate consumers and make marijuana products look less appealing to kids. Companies must now submit their designs for state approval. Soon, packaging will only be allowed one color besides black and white, and logos or images cannot be larger than the word “marijuana” or “marijuana-infused product.” Also, all text must be in either black or white, and all products must also have a warning label.
