Let the construction begin
New Max Starcke Park playscape on its way up
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) -- Construction is officially underway for the city of Seguin’s newest playscape area at Max Starcke Park. The community recently gathered to celebrate the start of construction of the new Kids
Kingdom Playscape on the park’s east side. The celebration focused on the efforts that went behind the purchase of the new amenity and the new quality of life feature that will be added in the Seguin community.
The playground was funded in part by a Niagara “Perk Your Park” grant that community members helped the city secure. City officials say thanks to the community’s overwhelming support during a 6-week public outreach campaign, the city won the $75,000 grant to assist with rebuilding playscape that was removed from the park last spring due to safety issues.
Covering the majority of the cost, however, was park development funds that are collected from new housing developments. Jack Jones, the Seguin
Parks and Recreation director, says the total cost for the new playground is $650,000. He says the ability to fund this playground with no taxpayer money is a win-win especially when you consider the cost of the original Kids Kingdom.
“It did cost $100,000 back in 1995. It sustained damage in the flood of 1998. So there was a rebuild and we opened again in 1999. In February of last year as you all know, the old wooden playscape was over there and it was 28 years old and it need to go. Park, pg. 3
Candidates for state representative share statements following Tuesday’s results
(Seguin) -- Statements and words of thanks to their voters are being extended today by the top two vote getters in the race for House District 44, Texas State Representative.
Incumbent John Kuempel, of Seguin, is headed to a runoff election with challenger Alan Schoolcraft, of McQueeney.
Unable to clear the majority of votes, both Kuempel and Schoolcraft continue their campaigns in both Guadalupe and Gonzales Counties.
Following results in Tuesday’s GOP Primary Election, Kuempel expressed sincere appreciation to his supporters.
“I’m very grateful to thousands of Guadalupe and Gonzales County conservatives for propelling us into the runoff in such a strong position,” said Kuempel. “We are fighting relentlessly to advance our Christian values, deliver record-setting property tax relief, and fully secure our border. Now, it’s on to victory in
the May 28th Runoff and even more conservative results for our families.
God Bless Texas!”
Schoolcraft also thanked his many supporters and believes that from day one, he has not wavered from his dedication to faith, family values and conservative principles.
“My opponent has proven
he does nothing but waver. John Kuempel has continually proven that standing with Democrats on their agenda is more important than standing up for the district’s conservative values, for parents and children, and for opportunities for greater educational success.”

Guadalupe County welcomes new attenuator truck
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Guadalupe County) -- As the need for safety increases on local roadways, so does Guadalupe County’s attempts to keep as many folks safe as possible especially those working on the roadways or responding to an emergency.
The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court recently approved an addition to its emergency response fleet with the purchase of a new attenuator truck.
Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator and fire marshal, says the strategic acquisition aims to bolster the safety of first responders and road crews during roadway operations.
He says not only does the Ford 550 flatbed/ commercial cab offer a versatile storage for traffic barrels, cones, barricades, and spill cleanup materials but it also includes an attenuator, a safety device affixed to the rear, designed to minimize injuries in the event of a collision.

Park, continued.
It needed to be replaced. So that is why we are here today to ground break for this new inclusive playscape,” said Jones.
City Manager Steve Parker says the playground is more than just a great place for families, it’s an investment in Seguin’s growth. He says the park is just one more way to welcome the future of this community.
“This is an exciting day. Since I’ve become city manager, this has become one of the fastest growing cities in all of the South Texas area. We are growing 3 to 5,000 people a year so we’ve been doing every type of study that a city can do because the one thing I hear is that they want to grow smart, right? So, we’ve done a comprehensive plan, we’ve done downtown plans, we’ve done park master plans and the two things we hear -- we want to preserve our heritage and the history and the other thing, is we want quality of life projects in Seguin and to me, this is a great quality of life project. This city council over the last several years has invested over $4 million to our parks system and it’s really really exciting to see all the new families come here, the existing families being able to have these resources -- splash pad, playground equipment, pickleball courts and that’s growing in tourism from all over to come into our community and really put Seguin on the map. But it takes a lot of people. This was a great venture,” said Parker.
Jones says what makes the

playground even more attractive is that it will include a design that will be unique to any other park space in this Central Texas area.
He says among the inclusive play structures will be the Temple Trolley that was designed in collaboration with Dr. Temple Grandin, inventor, author and autism advocate. The Temple Trolley offers gliding, spinning and swinging in one collective fun package.
In addition, the playground will operate on the ground level so that access to equipment is available to everyone.
Welcoming all children to play is Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen says the city can’t wait to fast forward to the park’s ribbon cutting.
“This is such a wonderful opportunity and you know, we have made a conscious effort and we made a commitment to continue every
He adds, “That is why Governor Abbott and President Trump both expressed support for my candidacy very early on. They understand how important this election is for the future of Texas. Other great conservative Texas leaders like Senator Ted Cruz, Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Ag Commissioner Sid Miller also endorsed me in the fight to protect the conservative soul of this district. I urge every conservative of this district to stand up now in this runoff election and choose a true champion for their values.”
Leading the pack of four candidates the entire time was Schoolcraft with 10,910 votes. Kuempel followed closely behind with 10,213 votes.
Rounding out the group of candidates were Greg Switzer with 1,030 votes and David Freimarck with 523 votes.
The run-off election is slated for Tuesday, May 28.
piece of equipment that we add to a park for quality of life will be an all inclusive piece of equipment. That’s very important. It gives me chills to think about. It gives me chills to think that in the past, all children couldn’t play here and so that’s very very important to me,” said Dodgen.
Jones says adding to the quality of life through the parks system has already proven successful as seen with the construction of the pickleball courts and of the new Bauer Park located on College Street.
“The city of Seguin has made a significant investment in parks, playgrounds especially here in Starcke Park. This is our legacy park. This was built in 1938,” said Jones.
City officials, who gathered for the groundbreaking on Tuesday afternoon, say they are hoping to have the new playground ready to go by early summer if not sooner.
Truck, continued.
The collapsible nature of the attenuator absorbs impact, safeguarding the lives of both first responders and motorists.
County officials say the rapid replacement capability of the attenuator ensures minimal downtime, further emphasizing the commitment to maintaining a high level of safety.
Additionally, the truck features a traffic control signal on the back, facilitating efficient traffic management at accident scenes or construction sites.
Expected to be operational within the next few weeks, the attenuator truck will be under the auspices of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management office and staffed by the first responders of the fire marshal and emergency management department.

France Makes History Enshrining
Abortion As
Constitutional
Right
(Paris) -- France is now the first country in the world to make abortion a constitutional right. The French Parliament voted 780-to-72 in favor of the measure that amends the French constitution. Efforts to guarantee the right for abortion in France started as a response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022. Before the vote, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said, “Above all, we’re sending a message to all women: your body belongs to you.”
Wyoming Passes New Regulations For Abortion Clinic
(Cheyenne, WY) -- Wyoming lawmakers have passed a bill that would add regulations to surgical and chemical abortions to the state’s last remaining abortion clinic. The new bill, expected to be signed into law this month, would reclassify abortion clinics as ambulatory surgical centers. That would require doctors who perform abortions to be licensed and add criminal penalties for violations. The state passed two bans last year on abortion and the use of an abortion pill, which are both under injunction pending an April court hearing.
Colorado Bill To Grant Personhood Status To Embryos, Fetuses Fails
(Denver, CO) -- An effort to charge Colorado women with a crime if they get an abortion isn’t going anywhere. It was voted down in a House committee right after being introduced yesterday. The Republican-sponsored bill aimed to classify an embryo or fetus as a person. It was nearly identical to one that also failed last year.
