NBA Suspends Ja Morant For Eight Games For Flashing Gun On Camera

(Memphis, TN) -- The NBA is suspending Memphis Grizzles star Ja Morant for eight games without pay. Morant has been away from the team since earlier this month when he went on Instagram Live displaying a gun at a strip club in Colorado. He also just recently left a counseling program in Florida. Morant will be eligible to return to the Grizzlies on March 20th against the Dallas Mavericks.

Trail Blazers Announce New Mascot

(Portland, OR) -- The Portland Trail Blazers introduced a new mascot to fans during Tuesday night's game against the Knicks. Douglas Fur, spelled F-U-R, is a big foot character. The Blazers had a bigfoot mascot in the 1980s when the team played at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Douggy, as the new mascot is called, will work with the current mascot, Blaze The Trail Cat. The North American Big Foot Center, located in Boring, helped the Blazers develop the new mascot.

Josephine Garcia Molina, age 87, of Seguin passed away on March 8, 2023. Josephine (Peppy/Josie) was born on April 27, 1935, in Walder, Texas to Modesto Garcia and Dominga Martinez.

Josephine was a loving, kindhearted woman who spoiled her children and grandchildren without hesitation. She was sweet with a little side of zest. Josephine loved her garage sales, lotto tickets, listening to the news on KWED and sitting on her porch watching the cars zip on by. Josephine was an easy-going person, full of life, jokes, love, and honesty. She was one who would give you all she had and if she did not have it, she would assure you as to how to get it. Many friends and family would go to her for advice for both personal and business issues. She was crazy about her family and friends. She loved everyone so deeply and because of all of the love she gave to everyone she will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.

She is preceded in death by her father, Modesto Garcia; mother, Dominga Martinez and daughter; Estella Molina-Hall, brothers; John, Joe and Frank Garcia; sister, Gloria Salazar and one and only Daughter in-law; Cindy Molina.

She is survived by her children, Fred Molina Jr.; Lilia Rodriguez; Elisa Flores (Henry Flores Sr.), Sister, Mary Canales (Max Canales); many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.

A memorial visitation celebrating Josephine’s life will be held on Friday March 17, 2023 from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at Palmer Mortuary at 7:00 p.m.

Study Finds Significant Rise In Black Infant Sudden Deaths

(Washington, DC) -- A new study shows an alarming rise in sudden infant death rates for Black babies. According to researchers, it’s nearly three times higher than the rate for white babies in 2020. The study appearing in the Pediatrics Journal says the reason for the disparity is unknown. It recommends “interventions” to address racial and ethnic disparities in sudden unexpected infant deaths in the U.S.

Third Anniversary Of NYC’s First COVID-19 Death

(New York, NY) -- It’s been three years since New York City’s first recorded COVID-19 death. Mayor Eric Adams is marking the grim anniversary by noting that the pandemic “devastated our city, our families and our lives.” There’ve been more than three-point-two-million confirmed COVID cases in New York City since March 2020. Two-hundred-eleven-thousand people have been hospitalized and more than 45-thousand have died. Adams says that 99-percent of Big Apple residents have gotten at least one COVID shot in what was the largest vaccination effort in New York City history.

Man Hospitalized After Being Bitten By Zebra In Ohio

(Circleville, OH) -- Authorities in Ohio say a zebra owner is hospitalized after being attacked by the animal. Deputies and medical crews were called to the man’s property near Circleville, south of Columbus, Sunday after he was bitten and seriously hurt. Pickaway County Sheriff Matthew Hafey says the zebra had to be put down after it became aggressive with first responders.

Massive Seaweed Pile Heading Toward Florida’s Gulf Coast

(Tampa, FL) -- One of the largest seaweed mounds in history is floating toward Florida’s Gulf Coast. WFLA reports the five-thousand mile wide algae bloom can be spotted from space heading toward the state’s coast. The Florida Department of Health says the brown seaweed washed up on beaches in large amounts to provide habitats for creatures like crabs, shrimp, and sea turtles. While positive for the environment, it can create a bad odor and cause skin rashes. This comes at a time when the Gulf Coast is already dealing with impacts of red tide.
