Seguin ISD cancels school for solar eclipse

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is following in the footsteps of other area school districts who have made the decision to cancel classes on April 8 in observance of the historic solar eclipse event.

The district on Monday sent out a letter explaining its decision to parents.

Tanisha Hearn, the communications specialist for the Seguin ISD, says the top factor was safety.

“We’ve been monitoring the requests for absences from our staff and that’s was a big concern just to protect the safety of the students on our campuses that it seemed like it was the best decision to move in the direction that we did,” said Hearn.

The district also noted that there were enough “minutes allotted in the calendar that students will not need to make up the day later in the semester.”

Over the last few weeks, other school districts especially those along the solar eclipse viewing line, stated that an influx of traffic and people coming into the area to view the eclipse would not only affect regular school traffic and bus schedules

but it could impact the response time should there be an emergency at one of their campuses.

While the Seguin ISD also realizes the concerns “surrounding transportation and attendance,” Hearn says the district’s priorities are also aligned with what it believes will be an “awe-inspiring experience.”

“We know it’s a historical event and we want people to be able to take the opportunity to learn and enjoy this away from all of the chaos that may (happen) during that day because of traffic and people trying to enjoy and observe,” said Hearn.

In its communication to parents, the district also made sure to include a link to NASA so that all families can better understand the phenomenon and how to safely witness it firsthand.

Farm Bureau office to say ‘thank you’ to local farmers

(Seguin) -- Local farmers and ranchers are not going unnoticed on this National Ag Day.

In fact, it’s the goal of the Guadalupe County Farm Bureau to thank and show appreciation to all those in the industry.

Ray Joy Pfannstiel, president of the local Farm Bureau board of directors, says in celebration, the farm bureau will be treating farmers and ranchers to some lunch today. He says they are invited to stop by at the local Farm Bureau office from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s not directly tied to Farm Bureau but we are in Agriculture so we just decided that maybe we would do something to thank the farmers and ranchers for what they do and what they provide for us and so the thought was we would get some hot dogs together and if you (see) or hear this, come by and pick up a hot dog and I think we will have some chips and cookies and bottle water. So, if they are in the area, we will just show

our appreciation for what the farmers and ranchers do for us,” said Pfannstiel.

Pfannstiel says he not only encourages them to take some time out of their busy day to stop by but also invites the community to come out and share its “thank yous.”

“Fortunately, we had some rain the last couple of days and some farmers are out doing some other things running around doing errands, picking up parts that they would normally push off, come out and partake of it or if the average citizen that is in the Seguin area or in Guadalupe County, take that opportunity to stop by and help us thank the farmers and ranchers that provided the food and fiber for Guadalupe County,” said Pfannstiel.

Free hot dogs will be served on a first come, first serve basis. The local Farm Bureau office is located at 325 S. State Highway 46.

Blood drives being planned for remainder of this week

(Seguin) -- You have three more opportunities in which to help save a life. A series of Community Blood Drives that began over the weekend at HEB continue this week at other various partnering locations.

The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is encouraging individuals to become blood donors and heroes to patients in need by making an appointment.

The mobile unit will be in Seguin today and Wednesday at Texas Lutheran University. Today’s hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Donors will also have the chance to give on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fantastic Sam’s.

While blood is in demand year-round, donations are especially needed during these warmer months of the year. That’s according to Roger Ruiz, of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.

“Patients in more than 100 hospitals, clinics in South Texas rely on the generosity of blood donors regularly. The need for blood is constant to meet the ongoing needs of patients scheduled for surgery, those who need blood as part of their regular cancer treatments, newborns and their mothers, and many other patients,” said Ruiz. “Many patients need blood transfusions regularly, like 9-year-old Lyric. She receives frequent blood transfusions to help ease pain caused by sickle cell disease.”

Ruiz says donating is made easy. He says folks start off by making an appointment by visiting SouthTexasBlood.org or by calling 210-731-5590.

Now while appointments are not required, they are recommended.

After signing up, he says individuals will be asked

to complete a 10-minute health questionnaire.

Prior to donating, donors will take part in a quick health screening which includes blood pressure, iron check and temperature.

Ruiz says the actual blood donation process, itself, only takes about 10 minutes.

Anyone over the age of 16 can donate, however, a parent must give consent for a 16-year-old to donate. Donor gifts will be provided at each site. Those who donate at Fantastic Sam’s on Sunday will receive a $10 voucher for a free haircut good for that day only. They will also be entered into a drawing for the chance to win six months of free haircuts.

Beyond Seguin Borders: Celebrating music & art at ILLfest

(Austin) -- The second weekend of March, ILLfest came to Austin, bringing EDM, art, and Texas style together for an unforgettable experience. I was invited on behalf of Seguin Daily News and Seguin Today to check out the two-day festival, so I dug out my hydro-pack, grabbed my earplugs and donned my trusty Doc Martens as I headed up the road from Seguin for the event.

On arrival, I picked up my media pass from will-call, headed through security and entered the festival.

Bustling crowds moved around the grounds, wearing their most colorful festival attire as nearby friends traded trinkets and bracelets to spread positivity. Artwork was everywhere, and food and shopping vendors were tucked in a convenient corner just off the main festival area.

Massive murals could be seen everywhere inside the gates, and artists were actively working on pieces throughout the two-day festival. One artist named Mez Data told me he's been painting most of his life and looks forward to the festival each year.

"I was part of the first ILLfest," he said. "And I've been able to be here every year. This character, I just made up when I got here. I'm known for my characicatures so I already kind of have a direction, but they don't have a personality or develop until I'm on the wall. It's not pre-planned. I just show up and start painting."

The fact that the artists were actively working on pieces during the event gave it a more interactive feeling than just showing up and observing completed pieces. Being able to talk to the artists was another bonus.

The murals became a backdrop for festival attendees who posed for selfies and group photos and also just took pictures of the art before heading to one of two stages to check out the music.

With many big names on the lineup for ILLfest this year, I spent most of my time at the outdoor stage, making friends and enjoying the music. I watched people spin flowstars, hula hoops, and poi while everybody danced and generally had a great time.

As the sun went down, ILLfest's atmosphere became even more immersive. Murals that were static earlier glowed under blacklights and with the help of glow-in-the-dark paint. The artwork came alive with projectors, some of which provided interactive responses to movement. It was pretty incredible, and honestly I did not expect that level of production quality on the art side of the event.

Rezz closed out day one with the bass and lasers. EDM music is heavily male-dominated, so seeing crowds go wild for a female headliner was pretty empowering –– especially during Women's History Month.

On day two of the event, the artwork transformed even more, with the piece I'd spoken

to Mez Data about finally being completed as an homage to drum and bass music. That day, I caught artists I didn't know and spent my time talking to festival-goers about their experiences. There were people from all around Texas in attendance, with even more people flying in from out of state for the event.

People reported having a great time but with one common complaint about the price of alcoholic beverages. While a premium was definitely tacked on to the drinks, it aligned with other similar events, which also typically have higher prices on these items.

After all was said and done, my biggest takeaway from the festival was the positivity of every single person I spoke to. On day two, while enjoying a set on the lawn, a random man approached me and introduced himself –– much to my surprise, I was meeting Jason Millsap, the owner of Illfest. He stayed and chatted for a while, sharing with me that his dream for the festival was to be a place where different forms of creativity could come together, creating an environment for people from all walks of life to enjoy. I believe he and the ILLfest team accomplished this goal.

ILLfest was a place where creativity thrived and was celebrated in all forms, from music to art and even fashion. It was a weekend escape from everyday life where people could just be themselves, and I'm so glad I got to be there and experience it for myself.
