Winds become challenging during area house fire

(Guadalupe County) – “March 19th was a day set to burn. High winds and low humidity combined to keep fire departments throughout the state busy, and Sand Hills VFD was no exception.” That’s all according to fire officials with the Sand Hills Volunteer Fire Department.

They report that at 10:41 p.m. Wednesday, the department was notified of a structure fire in the 100 block of Hollow Pass.  Units responded to the scene and found a small home and two vehicles engulfed in flames. Assistant Chief Kelly Hallmark agreed with the department that the weather was doing no favors with wind gusts of up to 30 mph.

“The wind gusts really whipped up the fire,” said Hallmark. “It burned hotter and faster.”

Fire officials say the tenant of the home had escaped unharmed prior to

the fire department’s arrival.  Units from Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue, Sand Hills VFD, New Berlin VFD, and Seguin Fire Department worked to extinguish the flames, and prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent properties.

The fire was controlled, and all units were cleared at approximately 1:15 a.m.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  The American Red Cross was notified and aided the tenant whose belongings were destroyed.

The Coastal Bend Flying Circus and the Surfside Flyers Club Showcase hope to take advantage of the winds this weekend during the annual Community Kite Festival. The festival is hosted by the Seguin ISD and Seguin Parks and Recreation Department. The visiting group will showcase various large-scale kites during the community kite flying event this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manuel C. Castilla Park. See story on page 2.

Let the kites soar into the skies

Community Kite Festival set for this Saturday

(Seguin) – Folks are hoping that recent winds in the area will stick around for at least one more day.

That’s because kites will be in the sky this Saturday for the 4th Annual Community Kite Festival. The partnership between the city of Seguin and the Seguin Parks and Recreation Department invites families to the open fields of Manuel C. Castilla Park for a day of fun.

Allison Seidenberger, Seguin ISD ACE director, says folks can either bring a kite from home or some will be provided on-site.

“We have several ways that families can enjoy the kite flying portion of the event. One of them is the observation of the Coastal Bend Flying Circus and the Surfside Flyers Club Showcase and so they will be out in the field with some of the larger more ornate kind of kits and doing some demonstrations. We also have been graciously donated by the city of Seguin and Walmart

of Seguin free kites that we will help families assemble and be able to use and take and participate in the event with those and then lastly, we have a station that actually is the city of Seguin station – the one that the parks and rec run – and that is where they actually do kite making. There’s an opportunity to build and make your own kite from the materials that they will have there for you. So, there’s lots of ways that you can get involved with the kite flying,” said Seidenberger.

Although the featured event is kite flying, Seidenberger says a host of other fun events and activities will be available.

“We have over 35 booths that are available for receiving information, activities and they are community-based resources for families to be able to utilize to help support in various ways. I know one exciting thing that is new and different this year is Leadership Seguin will be there, and they

will be raffling off a Zero Turn lawnmower and those proceeds are going to be going toward a new 40x60 picnic pavilion at the park that we actually hold this event at– the Manuel C. Castilla Park. That’s their initiative for the year and so we are excited to have this opportunity for them. I think they are going to actually have it there on display,” said Seidenberger.

The ACE program will also be hosting various yard games for families. The event will include DJ music and a performance by the Vogel Elementary School Choir at 10:30 a.m.

Free hot dogs, chips, and drinks will also be served while supplies last. ACE and the Seguin HEB are making the food possible.

Door prizes will also be raffled off for those in attendance.

The free Community Kite Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Manuel C. Castilla Park is located at 2402 N. Guadalupe St.

Area high school juniors compete for this year’s Distinguished Young Women title

(Seguin) -- A total of 15 young ladies will compete this weekend during the annual Distinguished Young Women of Guadalupe County contest better known locally as Junior Miss. Coordinators say this is the first time in a long time that the contest has featured this large of a group. The scholarship program features high school juniors living in Guadalupe County. This year’s competition also marks a milestone for the organization as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Despite changes over the years, Guadalupe County remains the only location in the state of Texas that still hosts its own individual program. All other winners advance to the state level from an “at large” program.

Although the program’s name has changed from Junior Miss to Distinguished Young Women, longtime

coordinator Toni Winters says the goal of highlighting the exceptional talents and qualities of participants remains a primary objective for organizers. At first glance, DYW may look a bit like a pageant, but she says it’s much more of a scholarship program that focuses on the academic and community accomplishments of participants rather than their beauty.

This year’s contest gets underway at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Texas Theatre. Tickets are $15 a person and can be purchased at the door. To learn more about the program, check out this month’s issue of the Seguin Today Magazine. The magazine is available for free at SeguinToday.com. Print copies of the magazine are also available for pick up at Seguin Radio KWED located at 609 E. Court St.

and before late-night games. The grandchildren shared many memories of playing spades, Uno and board games, playing with the army men, and having meals around the dining room table together. Those were some of their most cherished memories. She was always sure to have whatever her grandkids liked on hand so that everyone felt special. Whether it was their favorite games, toys or their favorite meals, everyone who was with her knew that they were the center of attention. They enjoyed playing out at the farmhouse feeding Tubby, a pony on the farm, sugar cubes and apples. While the animals were never allowed in the house, she always found a way to sneak them a snack and give them a little pat. Alongside those memories, her granddaughters speak about all of the ways she impacted them through her poise and caring heart, whether she was teaching them how to be proper ladies at the dinner table or teaching them how to embroider cup towels.

Though gone, never forgotten. This gorgeous, sweet, sassy woman gave so much to the people and family around her and has touched many lives. For many of the people around her, she was the strongest woman they’ve ever known. She will be loved for eternity by her family and God above.

Virus Spreads Like Wildfire

(Austin, TX) -- An outbreak of measles in West Texas is now up to 279 cases. That’s roughly the same number of cases that was seen nationally, all of last year. Statistics released Tuesday by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services show the fastest growth continues to be in a rural community that has the lowest immunization rates in the state. They’re urging everyone to get the shot.

NY Governor Launches Web Portal Supporting Access To Measles Vaccine

(New York, NY) -- In the wake of four measles cases in New York, Governor Hochul is launching a web portal supporting access to vaccines and accurate public health information. Hochul says there are three unrelated measles cases in New York City and one in Suffolk County. While that doesn’t qualify as an outbreak, the one right across New York’s border does. The Governor says there are 350 measles cases reported in Ontario since last fall. Hochul says the best protection is getting two doses of the MMR vaccine, quoting the CDC as saying that’s 97-percent effective. Hochul also attacked Health Secretary RFK, Junior, calling him the nation’s leading vaccine skeptic. She says he’s spreading misinformation about cod liver oil being able to protect against measles. Hochul says his claims are “baseless, irresponsible and puts lives at risk.”

Texas AG Announces More Illegal Abortion Clinic Arrests

(Houston, TX) -- Two more suspects are facing charges related to an illegal abortion operation at several Houston-area clinics. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced the arrest of Jose Ley and Rubildo Matos. Ley worked as a medical assistant and Matos, a nurse practitioner for Maria Rojas who was arrested Monday. Rojas was the first person arrested under the state’s anti-abortion ban. She’s also charged with practicing medicine without a license and faces more than 20 years in prison if fully convicted.

Judge Declines Contempt Order For Trump Over Seattle Children’s Funding

(Seattle, WA) -- A federal judge is declining to hold the Trump administration in contempt of court for canceling a research grant at Seattle Children’s Hospital, in spite of a court order. It would have funded the development of an online tool for health education for trans and nonbinary youths. The National Institute of Health revoked the grant after Trump issued an executive order in January halting federal funding for pediatric gender-affirming care.
