Tenth squirrel makes its debut in Seguin

(Seguin) – Seguin welcomes its 10th Squirrel to the city’s nest.

Finding a home along the city of Seguin’s Squirrel Trail is “Sudy.” The art projects consist of larger than life stone squirrels that are sponsored publicly, painted and then placed at various locations around town.

This latest squirrel is named in honor of Sudy Bruns. Sudy is described as one of the most dedicated if not the hardest working member of the Women’s Federated Club Building. The squirrel was unveiled Friday morning on the clubhouse’s lawn located at 432 N. River St . The club room is known as “the first structure in Texas built solely for women’s clubs.”

Sponsoring the Squirrel was Frank and Penny Follis.

Penny says it didn’t take very long for them to decide to honor Sudy with her very own squirrel.

She says Sudy’s contributions to the club house over the years have been vital to its restoration and preservation.

Responsible for creating and depicting the contributions of the three clubs that operate at the building was local Artist Nancy Hartfiel. Penny

says she couldn’t be more pleased with the final product.

“I just think Nancy did a great job of capturing the history of the club house as well as highlighting the Cemetery Tour that Sudy was so instrumental in organizing. She recognized the three clubs that needed this club house and were responsible for its maintenance and she has the wildflowers, the pearl necklace, the hats, the tea party – kind of the history of the house that goes back to the early 1900s and the ladies that met here so I was very pleased to see all that,” said Penny.

Penny says it was a year ago, when she contacted Sudy’s husband Joe just to make sure that they didn’t go against his wife’s wishes. After receiving his blessing, she says the project was put into full motion.

Although surprised with the honor, Sudy was humbled by the gesture and embraced the legacy of the club house as a team effort.

“No, it’s an honor for all of us that are here. There was a lot of work that was done and that’s nice because it wasn’t one person or two people. It was a bunch of people doing it,” said Sudy.

A tasty dose of science: TLU’s Chemistry CHAOS Night returns tonight

(Seguin) -- Ready for a delicious night of CHAOS? Doors open again this year for Texas Lutheran University’s annual Chemistry CHAOS Night!

CHAOS, which stands for Chemistry Happens with Adventurous Outstanding Scientists, is all about exploring the wonders of chemistry in fun new ways.

The theme of this year’s event is The Chemistry of Food and Cooking.

Kids of all ages will be fueled with questions such as “Ever wonder why eggs turn white when you cook them? Or why cookies baking in the oven smell so great?”

They’ll even go home with the answer of why the tonic water glows under a black light?

“We don’t often think about the science behind the foods we eat every day,” says Dr. Alison Bray, professor and chair of the chemistry department at TLU. “At Chemistry CHAOS, students of all ages will have the opportunity to learn about food and cooking science through hands-on and some ‘don’t-try-thisat-home’ experiments.”

Kids from kindergarten through high school-as well as kids at heart-are invited to join the fun and learn about the processes that happen in the world of food

and cooking through a variety of experiments.

Dr. Bray says visitors will also get lots of chances -- chances to learn how to make a biopolymer in the form of rice paper sushi wraps, conduct candy chromatograph as well as get the chance to taste liquid nitrogen ice cream.

“We are so excited to share our science and hope that the community will be too!” says Bray.

TLU’s Chemistry CHAOS will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Jackson Park’s Student Activities Center. The event, being hosted by TLU’s Pi Rho Chemistry Club, is free and open to the public.

Hartfiel is not only an artist but a member of the Seguin Delphian Study Club, one of the groups that meets in the building. It’s also in affiliation with the Preservation of Shakespeare & Federated (Study) Club. Hartfiel says depicting the structure’s history was the most important consideration in painting the squirrel.

“The women of Seguin, they wanted a building that was theirs. They got money. They got land donated and they would meet and they would get all dressed up in their pearls, their hats, their best dresses – leave the kids at home and they would meet and have their tea and coffee in their best china and during the war, they would knit for the other people in the country whether it be scarves or hats or whatever they collected to send to people in camps. They always had projects that they were doing and different groups just continued until today,” said Hartfiel.

Hartfiel says her favorite part of her artwork is the Riverside Cemetery that is illustrated across the squirrel’s tail. She says the clubs’ Saints Alive Cemetery Tour that will again be resurrected this fall is among the most notable fundraisers for the groups. She says, again, Sudy is attributed for collecting this very detailed information that had to be researched.

“As the building has gotten older, it needed a lot of repairs and so they were looking for a project that

would make enough money to cover the repairs plus scholarships and things to keep giving to the community and that’s when they started the idea of the cemetery tours. That’s when I kind of came into (the group) -- it was at the end of the Cemetery Tours and those were so neat and I loved that and then COVID hit and they were over. So, this year, now that I am a member, and we started talking about how we could raise some money -someone said to restart the cemetery tours. (And) when I drew it up and did the cemetery on the back, they said ‘oh, that’s morbid. You can’t have a cemetery on it,’ so I tried to put the tour on it but not make it look like a cemetery. So, it’s fun. It was fun to do,” said Hartfiel.

As of today, the city wide program currently has 15 more squirrels that will be unveiled over this next year.

The opportunity to sponsor the next batch of squirrels is still available. The cost is $2,500 per squirrel. Each sponsor will also need to cover the cost of the artist that he or she personally selects.

Strother Throws No-Hitter, Offense Explodes as No. 15 Bulldogs Complete Dallas Sweep

IRVING, Texas -- No. 15 Texas Lutheran completed the series sweep over University of Dallas on Saturday, beating the Crusaders 9-2 in Saturday’s opening game before defeating the Crusaders 17-0 in five innings for its fourth runrule victory of the season.

TLU (12-2, 5-1) secured its second conference series win and first sweep of SCAC competition. TLU completed the three-game conference sweep in dominating fashion, outscoring the Crusaders 41-2 and outhitting Dallas 55-4 on the weekend. TLU’s pitching staff struck out 34 batters on the weekend.

On Saturday, TLU stole 18 bases to total 23 on the weekend and 43 over the course of their six conference games this week. Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) led the way stealing nine bases on Saturday, including matching her own single-game record set last season by stealing six bases in game one on Saturday. Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) and Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton) would each steal four bases on the weekend.

In the circle, TLU’s trio of senior Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland), sophomore transfer Ainsley Davis (Rockwall/ Jesuit (OR)), and sophomore Katelyn Howard (Waller/Hempstead) each saw action on the day, with Ouellette (3.0 IP) striking out three, Davis (2.2 IP) striking out four, and Howard (1.1 IP) fanning two. Davis picked up her first win of the Bulldog, improving to 1-0 on the season.

Texas Lutheran immediately went on the attack in the first inning with Clark leading the game off with a single, stealing second and third and scoring on a throwing error from the Dallas catcher to put TLU up 1-0 before fans were comfortable in their seats. After a double from Jayna Reid (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs), Tatum Seith (Hewitt/Midway) hit the first home run of her collegiate career to give TLU a 3-0 lead.

In the third, an RBI single from Kourtney Bellinger (Houston/Grand Oaks) scored Tavery Ortiz (Texas City/Texas City) before Reagan Hillis (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) plated Bellinger with an RBI single of her own.

Dallas cut into the TLU lead with runs in the third and fourth to shrink the TLU lead to 5-2. Davis would get out of the fourth with a strikeout, stranding two base runners.

TLU got the runs back and more in the sixth as Caelee Clark stole home, Tavery Ortiz ripped a single to score Tatum Seith, and Kourtney Bellinger drove in Ortiz with an RBI single for the second time in the game.

A sacrifice fly from Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock) added an extra insurance run in the seventh inning to close the game’s scoring.

Texas Lutheran tallied 17 hits with six Bulldogs having multi-hit performances and five driving in at least one run. Tavery Ortiz led the way with a 4-for-4 game with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Caelee Clark was 3-for-5 with six stolen bases and two runs scored. Tatum Seith and Kourtney Bellinger drove in two runs apiece.

Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) continued her dominance in the circle, following up her perfect game on Friday with a complete game no-hitter vs. Dallas in the series finale, while the offense blasted 22 hits on the day en route to an 17-0 run-rule victory over the Crusaders.

The offensive explosion was highlighted by a six-run second and a seven-run third inning.

The scoring began in the first inning courtesy of an RBI single from Tavery Ortiz, a sacrifice fly from Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) and an RBI fielder’s choice from Reagan Hillis.

The Bulldogs would truly break the game open in the second. After back-to-back singles from Annie Kay and Caelee Clark to start the inning, Tatum Seith would drive in Kay with an RBI single before Ortiz would drive in Clark with a sacrifice fly. An RBI single from Kylee Jack (Richwood/ Brazoswood) would drive in Seith. An RBI double from Hillis, an RBI single from Linzee Leal, and an RBI bunt single would conclude the scoring in the second with a score of 9-0.

The third inning saw TLU plate seven runs on seven hits and an error. The scoring onslaught began with RBI singles from Jack, Taylor Vannett (Kingwood/Kingwood) and Hillis. Brooklyn

Stone (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Alta Loma) pinch-hit for Annie Kay and hit a sacrifice fly for her first career RBI. Olivia Prinz (Georgetown/ Georgetown), who missed the entire 2023 season due to injury, would hit a pinch-hit RBI single for her first hit and RBI since returning to play.

A sacrifice fly from Tavery Ortiz would drive in her team-leading third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to conclude the inning’s scoring.

An infield RBI single from Harleigh Russell (Fort Worth/Boswell) would bring the final tally to 17-0.

Strother twirled her second no-hitter of the weekend, striking out 12 of her 16 batters faced and was just one walk shy of her second perfect game. It was TLU’s second no-hitter of the season and 35th in program history. The no-hitter was the second of the season for Strother, fourth individual of her career, and sixth overall. The shutout is her fifth of the season and her fourth straight.

The 22 hits by the TLU offense was the most in a single-game since 2014 when the Bulldogs registered 23 hits against the Schreiner Mountaineers in a 23-7 victory. Thirteen Bulldogs registered a hit, with only one hit being an extra base hit, with 11 bringing in at least one run led by Ortiz’s three RBI.

For the first time in nearly two months, the Bulldogs return to Ed Kruse Stadium on Tuesday to begin a five-game homestand starting with a Tuesday non-conference doubleheader against Texas A&M-San Antonio. Mario DeLeon Campos, age 92 of Seguin, passed away on March 22, 2024. Mario was born on January 19, 1932 in Seguin, Texas to Regina (DeLeon) and Evaristo Campos.

Mario was a Korean combat veteran who bravely served his country in the United States Army. He proudly fought in the battle of Pork Chop Hill demonstrating unwavering courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

Mario was known for his kind heart and boundless love for his family. He took great pride in being an uncle through 5 generations. He was called Uncle, Tio, or Dewy. He was always ready with a smile, a hug, loving notes left for you, and words of wisdom for each of his nieces and nephews. They were his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them, creating unforgettable memories with everyone that will be treasured forever.

His love for gardening was evident in the vibrant blooms and lush greenery that adorned his garden. Not just his garden but often gardening at nieces and nephews to be sure that they too had blooms. His favorites were bluebonnets that he took special care of, Zinnias, and Yellow Roses. Whether tending to his flowers or vegetables, he poured his heart and soul into cultivating beauty and sustenance from the earth. His garden was not just a hobby but a reflection of his nurturing spirit and appreciation for the simple pleasures of life.

Mario touched the lives of all who knew him with his warmth, amazing sense of humor, generosity, and gentle spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a deep connection to the natural world. Though he may have bid farewell to this earthly garden, his memory will continue to bloom in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Brandes

Elizabeth Annie (Gold) Brandes, age 99, passed away on March 25, 2024. She was born on Jan. 5, 1925, one of nine children born to Theresa (Janecka) and Edward Gold. She was born at home on their family farm in Weimar, Texas, and grew up with 6 sisters and one brother picking cotton, milking cows, and many other chores.

During WWII, women were required to do the work of men who had gone to war. She worked at EGGA-Day Hatchery in El Campo, TX, and later at Dixon Cleaners. When Clarence Brandes, Sr. came home from the war, they dated and married on November 18, 1946., at St. Phillip’s Catholic Church in El Campo, TX.

Many of her pastimes included sewing, quilting, baking kolaches, gardening, canning vegetables, and playing the harmonica. She was a member of St. Ann’s at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin and was active as long as she was able. She was a devout Catholic and looked forward to attending Adoration weekly.

Family was most important to Alice (as she was affectionally called), and she made many birthdays, and holiday celebrations special and memorable, especially Easter and Christmas. When her children were grown, she worked at Dixie Crème Donuts and St. James School and cafeteria.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Brandes, Sr.,

brother and sister-in-law George (Clarine) Gold; sisters and brothersin-law Celestina Gold, Tracy (Henry) Fisher, Rosie (Clinton) Stancik, Hattie Foster Walker and her husband’s Lee Foster and Edward Walker, Tillie (Erwin) Pohlmeyer, Wilbur Maerz, and Bill Strong; nephews: Hank Fisher, Roy Fisher, Edward Joe Stancik, Joe Lee Foster, George Gold, Jr., Kenneth Gold, Glen Watts; nieces, Nancy Watts, Joyce Stancik, and Danette Le Blanc.

Hill VITAL STATISTICS

Russell Wayne Clopton passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Saturday, March 23, 2024. Russell was born in Seguin, TX, on September 24, 1973, to Rusty and Sandy Clopton. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1992, and received a BA in English Studies from Texas Lutheran University in 1998.

On March 7, 1998, he married his high school sweetheart, Pamela Clark.

He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Jack and Charlotte Clopton, and maternal grandparents,

Robert Lee Hill, age 85 of Seguin, passed away on March 24, 2024. Robert was born on November 18, 1938, in Nixon, Texas to Lou (Dromgoole) and Perry Moses Hill.

Robert and Betty were active members of the Dewville Methodist Church. He loved going out for a great meal, especially with his church family whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed talking to everyone who would listen to memories or any other subject that might come up.

Robert is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, his parents, great-grandson, Zane Pieprzica, and his brother Wayne Hill.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Pawelek and husband Isidore and

Marvin and Thusnelda Friedeck.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Pamela; his parents; brother, David (Susan) Clopton; in-laws, David and Judy Clark; sister-inlaw, Cindy (Steve) Meeker; brother-in-law, Russell Clark; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be 10am, Friday, March 29th at Grace Gardens Funeral Home. A visitation will be 6-8pm, Thursday, March 28th, also at Grace Gardens Funeral Home.

U.S. Life Expectancy Increased In 2020

(Undated) -- Life expectancy in the U.S. has gone up for the first time in two years. A CDC report released Thursday found that in 2022, life expectancy at birth was 77-and-a-half years. The life expectancy rate still hasn’t reached pre-pandemic levels, but COVID wasn’t included in the top three leading causes of death in 2022. According to the report, heart disease and cancer were the leaders, followed by unintentional injuries.

Study: Drinking Water In U.S. Prisons Contain Cancer-Causing Forever Chemicals (Washington, DC) -- Almost half of prisons in the U.S. are located downstream from water sources that likely contain cancer-linked “forever chemicals.” That’s according to a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Insufficient water quality testing around prisons means officials have only found that five-percent of prisons are located in places that definitively contain the toxic compounds. But 47-percent have at least one presumptive source of pollution in their boundaries. Even within the five-percent that definitely contain toxic chemicals, those facilities house tens of thousands of people affected by the water.

Mayo Clinic Health System Introduces Primary Care On Demand App (Rochester, MN) -- The Mayo Clinic Health System is introducing a new mobile app designed to connect patients to healthcare around the clock. The Primary Care on Demand app allows patients to ask questions about their health care and seek treatment for minor health problems like a rash or a cold. Video visits with a doctor can also be scheduled and will be billed at the standard office rate. The app is available to patients 18-years-old and older in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

U.S. Supreme Court Hears Missouri-Filed Case On Free Speech (St. Louis, MO) -- The U.S. Supreme Court has heard oral arguments this week on a case brought forward by attorneys general in Missouri and Louisiana. The lawsuit filed in 2022 by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey claims the federal government colluded with social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, to suppress freedom of speech concerning public health disinformation and election conspiracies. Attorneys for President Biden’s administration have argued that federal officials don’t have the authority to order content removed from social media platforms and say the plaintiffs have exaggerated the government’s abilities. A ruling on the case is not expected for several months.

Registration Open for City Summer Day Camp

Registration is now open for the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s Just for Kids Summer Day Camp program for those who have completed Kindergarten through 5th grade, not to exceed 11 years of age. The camp operates from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. from Monday, June 3 to Friday, Aug. 2. There is a $25 registration fee due at the time of registration and the weekly fee is $110. Volunteer Van Drivers Needed

Guadalupe County Veteran Services Office is in great need of volunteer van drivers. Even those who can only commit to one day per month. Volunteers will drive local veterans who have no transportation to their VA medical appointments in San Antonio. To volunteer, call 830-303-4188 ext. 1249.

The Life Changing Church is now offering a Free Accredited Homeschool Program for adults wanting to earn their high school diploma. It is a self-paced, no classes to attend program. You work around your schedule and at the end of the program you will receive an accredited diploma that is acceptable for college. Tutors are available at no charge. Salvation Army Office

The Seguin Unit Salvation Army office is located at 205 North King Street. The office is open to receive requests for assistance weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Volunteers Needed

The Guadalupe Valley Young Marines need volunteers. They promote a healthy, drug-free program and need males, 19 years and up who would like to see the program grow by contributing time to help future citizens, boys and girls 8 to 18.
