student among victims in bus accident in Bastrop County

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD has confirmed that one of its students was among those involved in a major crash involving a Hays CISD school bus, a concrete truck and a private vehicle in Bastrop County last Friday. While the district can’t release too many details due to privacy and concern for the student and their family, it has been confirmed that the “child is not in the hospital.”

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil has been working closely with the family to meet their needs. According to SISD, the student was on the bus because the district partners with Hays CISD for special programming, such as the trip during which the accident occurred.

The bus carried more than 40 people, most of them pre-K students from Tom Green Elementary in Buda and was returning from a field trip to the Capital of Texas Zoo in Cedar Creek when it was hit by a concrete truck on State Highway 21. Two people, including a 5-year-old child, were killed in the crash. The other victim was reportedly driving behind the bus. Several others, including adults, suffered serious injuries. Officials say a few victims remain hospitalized.

San Antonio Spurs make an impact in Seguin

(Seguin) --- The San Antonio Spurs is giving all of Seguin plenty of reasons to cheer. After keeping it a secret for a few weeks, Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin says it is finally proud to announce that it has been chosen as one of two $100,000 Frost Bank Operation Renovation Grant winners.

It was back in December when Teatro Executive Director Dr. Yvonne De La Rosa says she accidentally came across the renovation grant opportunity online.

Despite only having 24 hours in which to submit the grant, De La Rosa says she got straight to work.

However not only was that deadline later extended but the grant opportunity, itself, was extended into the Austin area doubling the competition.

De La Rosa says all the anticipation and nervousness, however, was quickly dismissed in February when she learned of the award via email.

“Let me tell you, I read it all the way until it said ‘Congratulations!’ and I cried and I called my dad and I called Sulema (Silva), our board president and also my sisters to share this news because I know that my mother is so excited for Teatro to continue this legacy that the community has been involved for 41 years and that our post WWII building that was the second Our Lady of Guadalupe Church is able

to get some renovations that we’ve been needing to have for a while,” said De La Rosa.

Although Teatro was publicly introduced as one of the winners during a recent Spurs game, the $100,000 amount was not publicly revealed until now.

“When I spoke to Spurs and also Frost, they said that our application was a standout and that they were unaware of the amount of work that Teatro has been doing in the community for 41 years and they wanted our students and our dancers and our families to have a safe place to come to and have all the necessary renovations in order to keep thriving,” said De La Rosa.

The grant will go toward a series of renovations and enhancements at the Teatro Cultural Arts Center located at 921 W. New Braunfels St. De La Rosa says among the priorities is a new commercial kitchen. She says the non-profit organization relies heavily on two large food fundraisers that not only support its Ballet Folklorico and Mariachi programs but also a host of other community programs throughout the year. More importantly, De La Rosa says a brand-new kitchen will help support the revitalization of Teatro’s culinary arts program.

Beginning today, March 27, at 5 a.m., the inside westbound lane of the I-10 frontage road, between SH 123 and Walnut Branch Creek, will be closed while the contractor works to construct a future detour. TxDOT officials say this is a temporary closure and work will continue until 7 p.m., on Thursday, March 28, weather permitting.

“Also, we’d like to go back to teaching cooking classes that we’ve had in the past whether how it is to make tamales, how to make tortillas, pan de calvo, different classes so this commercial kitchen would allow us to start the programming again and make it even better,” said De La Rosa.

De La Rosa says Teatro’s selection for the Operation Renovation Grant is a huge win for Seguin. She says its support of the program over the years has been priceless.

Also, not only did they just present a check to Teatro but De La Rosa says both Spurs and Frost Bank personnel traveled to Seguin to see the center for themselves.

“I’m excited for the Seguin community because we have had avid Spurs fans in our community and to see that the Spurs organization had recognized the work of the community and of the Teatro says a lot about who we are as a group, who we are as an organization and who we are as a community and that touches my heart. Never in a million years, like Sulema mentioned to me when she was signing some paperwork as the president that never in her wildest dreams would she see the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin partnering and signing a document together and that right there is telling to me that this national organization and the basketball association at that has seen our community in a different light,” said De La Rosa.

June to see the renovations through.

The other non-profit to receive a grant was the Madonna Neighborhood Center in San Antonio. Teatro’s group mission is to “promote a better understanding of the Mexican American culture and its people by the teaching, study, practice and performance of the arts and humanities.”

Bulldogs Sweep SCAC Weekly Awards for Second Time This Season

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran senior right-handed pitcher Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/ Clear Falls) has been named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Pitcher of the Week while sophomore outfielder Annie Kay (Sinton/ Sinton) earned SCAC Hitter of the Week honors, announced by the conference on Monday.

The recognition from the SCAC marks the 18th time in program history and second time this season that the Texas Lutheran softball program earned both the league’s top hitter and pitcher weekly honor in the same week.

Strother won all three of her starts, throwing the second perfect game of her career on March 22 and her third and fourth career individual nohitters over the weekend. Strother would strike out 39 over the course of 17 innings of shutout work, including 13 out of 15 batters faced in her perfect game against Dallas on Friday. She allowed just two baserunners across her three outings, holding opponents to go just 1-for-52 (.019). Strother limited her opponents to just one hit and one walk on the week. Strother would become TLU Softball’s all-time strikeout leader in her start against Southwestern on Monday, surpassing Cathy McBride’’s previous

record of 502 over the course of the 1994 through 1997 seasons. Strother reached the record in 456.2 innings while McBride’s came over a career spanning a program record of 617.2 innings. Strother, who currently has 541 strikeouts, is seventh amongst active Division-III pitchers in career strikeouts and ranks fourth in SCAC history in the category. The shutout also marked the 28th of her career, ranking second amongst active Division-III pitchers.

Kay went 9-for-14 (.643) with four runs driven in over the course of five games for the Bulldogs. The sophomore slashed .643/.667/.643 for a 1.310 OPS, scoring seven runs and drawing

one walk in her 15 plate appearances. She produced four multi-hit games while reaching in each of TLU’s five contests. Kay would also steal seven bases on the week, moving her into the top ten in the SCAC in the category.

Annie Kay earns her first career SCAC Weekly honor while Strother earns her 15th career SCAC Weekly honor.

Mario DeLeon Campos, age 92 of Seguin, passed away on March 22, 2024. Mario was born on January 19, 1932 in Seguin, Texas to Regina (DeLeon) and Evaristo Campos.

Mario was a Korean combat veteran who bravely served his country in the United States Army. He proudly fought in the battle of Pork Chop Hill demonstrating unwavering courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

Mario was known for his kind heart and boundless love for his family. He took great pride in being an uncle through 5 generations. He was called Uncle, Tio, or Dewy. He was always ready with a smile, a hug, loving notes left for you, and words of wisdom for each of his nieces and nephews. They were his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them, creating unforgettable memories with everyone that will be treasured forever.

His love for gardening was evident in the vibrant blooms and lush greenery that adorned his garden. Not just his garden but often gardening at nieces and nephews to be sure that they too had blooms. His favorites were bluebonnets that he took special care of, Zinnias, and Yellow Roses. Whether tending to his flowers or vegetables, he poured his heart and soul into cultivating beauty and sustenance from the earth. His garden was not just a hobby but a reflection of his nurturing spirit and appreciation for the simple pleasures of life.

Mario touched the lives of all who knew him with his warmth, amazing sense of humor, generosity, and gentle spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a deep connection to the natural world. Though he may have bid farewell to this earthly garden, his memory will continue to bloom in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Brandes

Elizabeth Annie (Gold) Brandes, age 99, passed away on March 25, 2024. She was born on Jan. 5, 1925, one of nine children born to Theresa (Janecka) and Edward Gold. She was born at home on their family farm in Weimar, Texas, and grew up with 6 sisters and one brother picking cotton, milking cows, and many other chores.

During WWII, women were required to do the work of men who had gone to war. She worked at EGGA-Day Hatchery in El Campo, TX, and later at Dixon Cleaners. When Clarence Brandes, Sr. came home from the war, they dated and married on November 18, 1946., at St. Phillip’s Catholic Church in El Campo, TX.

Many of her pastimes included sewing, quilting, baking kolaches, gardening, canning vegetables, and playing the harmonica. She was a member of St. Ann’s at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin and was active as long as she was able. She was a devout Catholic and looked forward to attending Adoration weekly.

Family was most important to Alice (as she was affectionally called), and she made many birthdays, and holiday celebrations special and memorable, especially Easter and Christmas. When her children were grown, she worked at Dixie Crème Donuts and St. James School and cafeteria.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Brandes, Sr.,

brother and sister-in-law George (Clarine) Gold; sisters and brothersin-law Celestina Gold, Tracy (Henry) Fisher, Rosie (Clinton) Stancik, Hattie Foster Walker and her husband’s Lee Foster and Edward Walker, Tillie (Erwin) Pohlmeyer, Wilbur Maerz, and Bill Strong; nephews: Hank Fisher, Roy Fisher, Edward Joe Stancik, Joe Lee Foster, George Gold, Jr., Kenneth Gold, Glen Watts; nieces, Nancy Watts, Joyce Stancik, and Danette Le Blanc.

Russell Wayne Clopton passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Saturday, March 23, 2024. Russell was born in Seguin, TX, on September 24, 1973, to Rusty and Sandy Clopton. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1992, and received a BA in English Studies from Texas Lutheran University in 1998.

On March 7, 1998, he married his high school sweetheart, Pamela Clark.

He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Jack and Charlotte Clopton, and maternal grandparents,

Robert Lee Hill, age 85 of Seguin, passed away on March 24, 2024. Robert was born on November 18, 1938, in Nixon, Texas to Lou (Dromgoole) and Perry Moses Hill.

Robert and Betty were active members of the Dewville Methodist Church. He loved going out for a great meal, especially with his church family whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed talking to everyone who would listen to memories or any other subject that might come up.

Robert is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, his parents, great-grandson, Zane Pieprzica, and his brother Wayne Hill.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Pawelek and husband Isidore and

Marvin and Thusnelda Friedeck.

U.S. Life Expectancy Increased In 2020

(Undated) -- Life expectancy in the U.S. has gone up for the first time in two years. A CDC report released Thursday found that in 2022, life expectancy at birth was 77-and-a-half years. The life expectancy rate still hasn’t reached pre-pandemic levels, but COVID wasn’t included in the top three leading causes of death in 2022. According to the report, heart disease and cancer were the leaders, followed by unintentional injuries.

Study: Drinking Water In U.S. Prisons Contain Cancer-Causing Forever Chemicals (Washington, DC) -- Almost half of prisons in the U.S. are located downstream from water sources that likely contain cancer-linked “forever chemicals.” That’s according to a new study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Insufficient water quality testing around prisons means officials have only found that five-percent of prisons are located in places that definitively contain the toxic compounds. But 47-percent have at least one presumptive source of pollution in their boundaries. Even within the five-percent that definitely contain toxic chemicals, those facilities house tens of thousands of people affected by the water.

Mayo Clinic Health System Introduces Primary Care On Demand App (Rochester, MN) -- The Mayo Clinic Health System is introducing a new mobile app designed to connect patients to healthcare around the clock. The Primary Care on Demand app allows patients to ask questions about their health care and seek treatment for minor health problems like a rash or a cold. Video visits with a doctor can also be scheduled and will be billed at the standard office rate. The app is available to patients 18-years-old and older in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

U.S. Supreme Court Hears Missouri-Filed Case On Free Speech (St. Louis, MO) -- The U.S. Supreme Court has heard oral arguments this week on a case brought forward by attorneys general in Missouri and Louisiana. The lawsuit filed in 2022 by Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey claims the federal government colluded with social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, to suppress freedom of speech concerning public health disinformation and election conspiracies. Attorneys for President Biden’s administration have argued that federal officials don’t have the authority to order content removed from social media platforms and say the plaintiffs have exaggerated the government’s abilities. A ruling on the case is not expected for several months.
