Let the clipping ‘n snipping begin Seguin hair, nail salons reopen for business By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Thousands of hair stylists and barbers will be picking up their shears and clippers today. Nail salons and other beauty businesses will also be in operation as today marks the second phase for Governor Greg Abbot’s Open Texas plan. Limited or appointment only service, face coverings and smaller occupancies, however, are among the rules being laid out for the businesses who for many have been shut down since March 20.

only come one person at a time unless they are a family -- a husband or wife or parent and child. I think we will be fine. I think it will be easy for us to stay six feet apart because we don't have a crowded space so that's not going to be an issue for us," said Schulz. See NAIL SALON, page 3

The go-ahead by the governor to open the salons, however, came as a bit of a surprise for many stylists as the original thought was that these services would reopen on May 18. Despite the earlier date, many hair salons and barbershops have already mobilized a plan that works for their own respective business. Those ready to open shop is Audra Schulz, the owner of Hair Haus located at 315 N. Austin St. Schulz says keeping customers safe is already something that hair salons are mandated to do. "Sanitation has always been a big part of our industry. I think that's why a lot of hair dressers have been upset about the closure and everything because we take six hours of sanitation, sterilization every two years just to renew our license and we have done that for many, many years and we are going to continue practicing all of those sanitation procedures and ramp them up a little bit and then right now, we are only going to take appointments. We will not be seeing walk-in clients unless there is room for someone to come in the door safely. We have plenty of room in our salon because we only have five stylists so we have a lot of room between our stylists and our clients and we've asked clients to

Protective shields like the ones installed here at Natural Nails are among the new safety changes that clients will see as they return to nail salons or other beauty businesses. Courtesy photo

SHS rolls out celebration event during cap and gown pickup By Cindy AguirreHerrera

plenty of thankful parents – parents like Reyna’s mother Teresa.

(Seguin) – Seguin High School graduation festivities officially began Thursday morning with a special surprise for seniors. Seniors were treated to a human chain of cheering teachers as they drove thru a car line to pick up their caps and gowns. This bonus celebration for the soon to be graduates was the brainchild of Seguin High School Principal Dr. Hector Esquivel. Dr. Esquivel says with the ongoing pressure to make sure that this time of year is made special for his seniors, he decided to move forward with the idea – an idea that came to him one night when he couldn’t sleep. "I thought that this would be a very special event as our students are coming on campus -- most of them for the first time since before we broke for Spring Break and I thought if we use our social distancing and we all made a huge human chain with signs telling them that we love them, we miss them and that they did it -anything to encourage them

"Oh my God! I'm so proud. It's a great day to be a Matador!" said Teresa.

and show them that we really care about them so much (and) that we were really willing to look like fools out there to make sure that they see that – then they'll always remember that. I just kind of saw it as an opportunity to be able to celebrate them because of everything that they've gone through," said Esquivel. Totally surprised by the cheering, sign holding and noise making teachers was Senior Reyna Davila. Davila says she hopes the teachers know that it was all well worth their efforts. "I like it. It made me a lot more happier than I thought. I was kind of upset that this was how we had to do it but I'm really glad that they had that for us. It was good to see all of my teachers," said Reyna. Not only were the students surprised but there were also

For the teachers, Thursday was also an opportunity to reunite and finally see their students. SHS Teacher Kelly Soefje says things could not have been more perfect. "I think that it is an awesome opportunity to celebrate all students' accomplishments. This is about the most exciting thing that they have been able to do since the pandemic hit and so I feel like it's the least that we can do to celebrate them picking up their caps and gowns and all of their graduation things and it's exciting for us because we get to see their faces again and we get to see the excitement and the joy and like the culmination of all of their hard work. It's like a right of passage to pick up their caps and gowns. As a matter of fact, I think we should do this for them every year. It's so exciting," said Soefje. In addition to picking up their caps and gowns, students this year were also provided with special Class of 2020 yard signs.

As for her establishment, Schulz says customers are asked to call and make an appointment. She says not everybody will be returning to work on Friday. "The people that work on the salon are independent contractors and so everyone is allowed to work their own hours so some of us have chosen to start on Friday and some have decided to wait until Tuesday just to try to get things in order," said Schulz.

The trick to looking good can also mean having a good manicure and pedicure. Like hair salons and barbershops, customers beginning today can also visit their favorite nail salon. Lynn Vu, the owner of the Nail Shop located at 1507 E. Court St #113, says she and her employees could not wait to reopen. She says these last couple of months have been rough.

"We definitely do not like it when we had to see our employees struggle like as for us, we had to take money out of our retirement account to make ends meet. It's been really hard seeing all of my employees Schulz says these last couple of months struggling," said Vu. have no doubt been challenging for the hair and beauty industry and hopes that In speaking to the Seguin Daily News, Vu everyone begins to recover with today’s opening of salons. "I think it's different for everybody because everybody is in a different situation. Personally, I had received a lot of help from my bank at First United. They were able to get an operating loan from the PPE program and the people that work there have been awesome about handling all the paperwork for us. It's been really great because I've heard a lot of horror stories about that. So, that was helpful and me personally, I’ve been okay for the last couple of months, but I know the whole unemployment benefit situation has been a real nightmare and it's not their fault. It's just because there are so many people applying, but it's been really hard for stylists to try to figure out the website and paperwork to get that all done. I don't know if a lot of have really benefitted from that, so I think everybody is just really happy to get back to work," said Schulz.

"So, we have taken every effort to ensure that our customers have a safe and enjoyable experience and then we also will be following all of Governor Abbott's safety guidelines like implementing an appointment system. We will also reduce our maximum capacity to 25 percent and also, we will be requiring social distancing and people

With a large majority of salons being back in business today, Vu is asking that customers practice a bit of patience in getting scheduled in their appointment books. She says she’s sure that each salon across town will be doing all that they can to assist all original and new customers. "We ask that you please be patient. We are not ignoring them. We will definitely respond back after their appointment time because people have been blowing up our phones like crazy. But yes, be patient and make sure that if they are sick or having fever or know someone who has corona -- please do not come in until you feel like you are fully well," said Vu. Friday’s orders also include the reopening of tanning salons across the state. However, before entering one of these businesses, customers are encouraged to find out whether that business will be requesting that they wear a mask. Customers are also encouraged to stay outside in their vehicles until their stylists or nail technician is ready for them.

White House Press Secretary on National Testing Strategy (Washington, DC) -- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany [[ kay-lee MACK-en-aynee ]] says it is "simply nonsensical" to test everyone in America for coronavirus. During a press briefing, McEnany said if the U.S. tested every American, they would have to "test them again in an hour." She said testing should only be conducted in hotspots, such as nursing homes and meat packing facilities. McEnany says the U.S. needs to be strategic with testing because our hotspots per capita are higher than any other country. She added that this will be a governor-led effort moving forward.
