Seguin ISD looks to return to the table to take action on school property

(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD will have to wait a few more days before it can take initial steps toward potentially locking down the land for a future third middle school campus. The land in question is a 42acre tract adjacent to the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center located on the city’s northeast side.

Although they are very interested in the potential of this property, Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez says the board felt the language as presented in the agenda item did not fully establish the district’s intention to determine the best decision.

“Nothing changes as far as our interest in looking at that property as a possibility for a third middle school. I think what the board is wanting us to do is change the resolution language when we come back to really outline the district doing our due diligence on the study of the property. As you all heard, there was some public commentary on that property and with every reason but what we do once we

have that opportunity to make an offer on a property then we go into the part where we work with our architect and engineers to look at the soil, to look at the water, to look at the easement and so that’s what this resolution would have afforded us to do but I think what the board

is wanting us to come back with is really outlining what some of that due diligence would look like,” said Gutierrez.

Prior to the board’s action, the school board heard from several members of the community and residents in that area who felt that

the property was not the best place for a school. They cited issues with the property being in a flood plain as well as in Randolph’s fly zone, which according to most of them, is a deafening experience and potentially harmful to students.

Central Park Summer Concert Series Returns

Bring your family and friends out for the FREE Central Park Summer Concert Series. The series features live music at 7:00 p.m. every Sunday in June with the final concert on July 2.

Kicking off this series is the talented Comal Community Band conducted by Alfred Tapia, making it the band’s twelfth time to kick off this series.

Alfred Tapia is a San Antonio native who served in the military Army as a musician and Bandmaster until he retired in 1984.

During his service Tapia conducted bands in Vietnam, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, the German Democratic Republic, France, and Morocco. He has remained an active musician in the San Antonio area since, including being a member of many other bands, teaching, and conducting.

The Comal Community Band plays a wide array of pieces from German inspired to classical and modern wind arrangements. Just as they are diverse in musical genres, they are diverse in members.

Members come from all ages, genders, occupations, and backgrounds and share their talents in harmony.

Some band members are past band directors or professional musicians, but most are just amateur players with a heart for music.

This year’s concert series will feature five area bands on Sunday evenings with Comal Community Band kicking things off on June 4. On June 11 Dirty River Jazz Band performs, followed by Groove Factor on June 18. On June 25, Natalie Rose will take the stage. The final concert on July 2 will feature the San Antonio Symphonic Band playing a variety

of patriotic, classical, and big band music.

Chicken Salad sandwiches, smoothies, shaved ice, mangonadas, ice cream, and floats will be sold by Wiggle Waggle. The concerts will be on Sundays starting at 7:00 p.m. and end at 8:30 p.m. The family-friendly concerts are free and offer something for almost every musical taste.

If approved, the agenda item would have delegated authority to the superintendent to negotiate and execute the necessary documents to effectuate the property purchase. Included in this process would have been a period in which the district could have conducted the necessary tests and investigations to determine whether any public concerns about purchasing the property were valid.

Convincing trustees to wait until the language can be changed was School Board Member Joshua Bright. Bright says the idea was simply to provide the public with a better understanding of how a deal if reached, was made.

“Like when you are buying a house, right? This is the same process. You make an offer which we have to make an offer and then you go through an inspection period and I think that in the resolution, that needs to say that – that part of the process -- is we are going to make an offer, yes and then during the period of inspection, we will do all of our due diligence to do all the tests and everything like that and really I think that’s what we really need to put in the resolution itself – maybe explain it a little bit more for the public,” said Bright.

However, Gutierrez says holding off on the vote comes with some risks.

“It does cause concern because right now, properties are not on the market for a very long time especially this much property and we encountered some challenges back when we started to look at the property for McQueeney. We’d identify a property. We would want to come to the board to discuss it and within a matter of days, it was not available anymore. The other challenge was finding a property within our budget. We asked our community for $1 million and the properties that we were finding were $3 million, $4 million, $5

million. We were very fortunate to find a plot of land for McQueeney Elementary School within that budget or close to that budget and so our concern right now is we went out to voters and asked for $2 million – that the price of the land, the cost of the land is going to continue to increase. Our hope is that we can find a property in the coming months that we can secure. Although, we do not need that third middle school right now or not even in the next few years, we want to be proactive and secure that property and so our hope is that we don’t encounter as many challenges as we did with securing land for McQueeney Elementary,” said Gutierrez.

As for the issues raised by the community, Gutierrez says none of them were a surprise. He says once the district gets around to giving him the go-ahead to pursue a deal, then a 60-day inspection period will go into effect, and the district will be one step closer to determining the district’s future.

“These weren’t surprises. These are all issues that we had discussed before with the easement, with the floodplain, with the fact that you have the base right there and the planes that fly over. Those were things that we had discussed already and had talked through with our attorneys. There wasn’t anything up to this point that had caused an alarm or a significant concern to make us want to not come to the board for authorization to pursue this property further. So, none of what was shared was a surprise,” said Gutierrez.

According to the district, the property’s location was popular because it sits adjacent to the SOLC. As reported earlier, the Seguin ISD is in the process of also purchasing the outdoor learning center with hopes of building its future Ag Center at the site.

District officials say to keep with its timeline and not lose out on the deal, they’ll have to return for another vote as soon as possible.

Study: Heart Attack Slows Down Long-Term Brain Health

(Washington, DC) -- Researchers are finding a decline in cognition and memory for those who have suffered from a heart attack. A new study published in the JAMA Neurology journal shows that those who’ve suffered from at least one incident of myocardial infarction had a “significantly faster” rate of global cognition slowdown. The research shows that having a heart attack impacts long-term brain health, rather than causing an immediate decline in function.

Fungal Infection Spreading Through NY and NJ

(New York, NY) -- A dangerous fungal infection is spreading at an alarming rate across the United States, including New York and New Jersey. The CDC says Candida auris is a form of yeast that is typically not harmful to healthy people but can be a deadly threat to those who are immunocompromised. It easily spreads and can infect wounds, ears, and the bloodstream. New York has so far this year reported 149 cases as of last week after reporting 379 cases in total last year, the highest in a decade. Meantime, New Jersey has already confirmed 416 cases, surpassing the 375 cases reported last year.

U.S. Sanctions Groups In China And Mexico Over Fentanyl-Laced Pill Production

(Washington, DC) -- The United States is putting sanctions on 17 entities and individuals in China and Mexico that it says are involved in fentanyl-laced pill making. The Treasury Department says the targets of the sanctions are either “directly or indirectly involved” in the process to make the dangerous drugs that are often headed to the U.S.. Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted that the sanctions are in coordination with the Mexican government and are intended to target criminal entities and individuals, not the countries.

Nevada Gov Strengthens Abortion Protections

(Carson City, NV) -- Nevada’s governor is strengthening abortion protections across the state. In a surprising move, Joe Lombardo became one of the first Republican Governors to ensure protections for out-of-state patients seeking abortions as well as in-state healthcare providers. The law bars state agencies from helping in out-of-state investigations that could lead to the prosecution of someone who traveled to Nevada to get an abortion. It will also ensure medical boards don’t discipline doctors who provide abortions. Lombardo has described himself as pro-life, but said on the campaign trail that he would respect the will of the voters.

We love what we do. And it shows.

We are honored that Modern Healthcare Magazine has named us one of the best places to work in the nation — again. Our collective dedication to providing world class healthcare means we are all passionate about taking care of you and your family for many years to come.

Ask the Master GARDENERS

Q: We have had such a lovely spring with nice rain, but now summer is coming. What are some good plants that can withstand the Texas heat?

A:Summer nighttime temperature in Texas is the problem, not daytime heat, according to Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist. Plants need lower nighttime temperatures in order to rest at night and reduce their respiration. Otherwise, respiration continues and the plant wears itself out. Annuals that have heat tolerance are marigolds, periwinkle, portulaca or moss rose, purslane, scaevola, and zinnias. Sun tolerant caladiums and coleus also do well. Perennials for the Texas summers are Firebush (Hamelia patens), Gold Star Esperanza, hardy hibiscus, lantana, petunia, phlox, plumbago, salvias and verbena. And remember, lantana, petunia, plumbago, all salvias and verbena attract hummingbirds to your garden.

Q: Are there particular plants that will attract birds to my yard?

A: Plants, shrubs and trees that have berries, fruits, seeds or nuts are available for our area. This includes American beautyberry, holly, elms, figs, native persimmons, oaks, pecans, sunflowers, tomatoes, and yaupon holly. Everyone has trouble with birds pecking their ripe tomatoes. I pick mine when the bottom of the tomato turns white with a tinge of red, and bring it in the house where it continues ripening.

Q: My cat has been chewing on my potted

bromeliad sitting on the window sill. Is it poisonous?

A: All the sources I found on the Internet say that bromeliads are not poisonous, but could be toxic. In other words, that cat could vomit or get sick or have an allergic reaction, but won’t die. Bromeliads and African violets are listed as two safe plants to have in the house with cats. However, you probably don’t want your bromeliad to have raggedy cat eaten leaves. Maybe you could place it in a window in a cat free room.

Q: When do I raise the mowing height of my lawnmower?

A: Normally we increase our mowing heights during summer to decrease lawn water use and increase drought tolerance. The recommended heights in the Texas Garden Almanac are two inches for Bermuda, four inches for St. Augustine, and six inches for buffalo grass.

Q: What can we do to conserve water this summer?

A: First of all, mulch your flower beds, shrubs and around young fruit and shade trees. Not only does mulch reduce moisture evaporation from the soil, it also reduces weeds and keeps soil temperatures lower. Another way to conserve is to remove weeds from your lawn and beds because they are competing for water. Do not over fertilize the lawn because this adds to excess growth (and you will need to mow and water more). Hopefully by now you have had your irrigation system checked for the beginning of the summer season to make sure that your sprinkler heads are not wasting water on sidewalks, driveways, etc.
