Southwest Prep to build new campus for GROWING high school classes
(Seguin) -- Construction officially gets underway this week as Southwest Preparatory School prepares for a new high school in Seguin.
Although the new addition to the campus will include space for both high school classrooms and a cafeteria, officials say the new building will be the foundation for their first official cohort of high school seniors.
Southwest Preparatory School-Seguin is an open enrollment, tuition-free, public charter school, which serves grades Pre-K through 12.
School Principal Dana Fornabaio says with enrollment continuing to grow, it has prompted the charter school to try to keep up with its facility needs here in Seguin.
“Since we have started here, this campus is one of our district campuses for Southwest Prepatory District. This is one of our newer ones and we have since I believe we are going on our eighth here at this campus, so we had started slowly adding on after elementary grade levels – the middle school and then the high school. So, next year will be our first year having our senior class of 12th graders. With that being said and just kind of over the past two years with implementing a lot of new different programs such as Capturing Kids Hearts and just the overturn.... Campus, pg. 3

Middle school land purchase back on Seguin ISD agenda
(Seguin) --- The Seguin ISD is expected to finally move forward with the potential first steps needed to secure a land deal for a future third middle school.
As reported last week, the school board opted to hold off on action that would allow Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez from moving forward with the purchase of a 42acre tract of land, located adjacent to the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center.
The issue according to the district was more about how the agenda item read than the school board being opposed to the purchase of this land.
District officials say the change also allowed the district to illustrate to the public its due diligence in handling this land deal and making
sure that it is the best location for a future school.
Tonight’s agenda reads, “Consideration and Possible Action, Including Adoption of a Resolution to Make an Offer to Purchase
Approximately 42 Acres of Real Property Located at 407 Patricia Park
Court, Seguin, Texas from GREEN DOG DEVELOPMENT, LLC.”
The special meeting of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees gets underway at 6:30 p.m. today in the Seguin ISD Board Room located in the Seguin ISD Administration Building.

of how we have been with our curriculum and the fact that we are a smaller class – classroom sizes – two per teacher ratio and we have a lot of interventions on our campus as well as tutors to give that extra support as well as a lot instructional assistance here,” said Fornabaio.
Southwest Prep last week broke ground for the new school building to be built at its current site, located at 2400 E. Walnut Street.
Fornabaio says its primary focus was to keep up with those growing numbers at the secondary level.
“Our idea for this new building that we are going to be doing. Demolishing of the old little piece (began) on Saturday. It’s two floors so it’s going to be kind of a multi-use building but on the second floor is where all of our high schoolers will be housed and then on the first floor is where we will have our cafeteria and other office space and things of that nature but the reason we are building a new two story building is because we want to give our high school kiddos their own space because we are a pre-k through 12th grade,” said Fornabaio.
More importantly, Fornabaio says the new building is vital to continuing their classrooms with a small student-teacher ratio.
“We are excited to be able to provide our students with more of their own personal space especially with
our high school kids and they are still going to be in that small classroom setting and getting a lot of that one on one. We are going to have that one-onone technology. It’s going to be very innovative so just being able to provide them those opportunities from the larger districts to come on in and have this kind of other family-oriented community, I think it’s going to be a really great year, so we are excited,” said Fornabaio.
The expansion of Southwest Prep is only the first of many plans that have been put into motion. Campus leaders say providing a great and safe learning environment is that first step.
“Eventually at the end of the day, we want to make sure our kids are getting the best opportunities possible. We are also going to start in this upcoming fall semester when school starts, we are starting our dual enrollment so that students can start receiving their college credit. Eventually, we want to become an early college high school. This is probably going to be just because of the space that we have – the most expansion that we are going to be able to do on the land that we have here so this will be it for this actual space for our pre-k through 12th grades,” said Fornabaio.
Weather permitting, construction on the new Southwest Prep high school building is expected to be completed in time for the first day of school scheduled for Aug. 14.

Darlene Holland Announces RETIREMENT
SEGUIN, Texas -- Darlene Holland, the head coach of both men’s and women’s track and field and cross country and the lone head coach in Texas Lutheran indoor track and field and men’s cross country history, announced her retirement from coaching after 12 seasons as head coach and 17 seasons in total at Texas Lutheran and over 25 years of collegiate coaching.
Holland announces the news of her retirement just days after six Bulldogs student-athletes competed at the NCAA Championships, with five earning All-America status, and just five weeks after her men’s and women’s teams won a combined 12 individual SCAC Championships.
“I knew coming into this season that it was going to be my last,” Holland said. “I had a vision of what could happen this year with the team, and many of my predictions came to fruition. Nobody on the team knew I was retiring, and we went through all of our seasons ‘business as usual.’ I am extremely proud of not only our group who made the NCAA Championships, but the team as a whole as we took on the SCAC competitors and gave it our all.”
Holland just completed her 12th season as the director of both Texas Lutheran’s cross country and track and field programs. She arrived in Seguin in the fall of 2006 as an assistant coach for the women’s programs to then coach Pat Zarate, winning three consecutive American Southwest Conference (ASC) titles together from 2010-12, before taking over as head coach for the TLU women’s cross country and track and field programs in 2012-13. In 2014, she was named the inaugural head coach for Texas Lutheran’s men’s cross country and track and field programs.
“I am thankful for the opportunity that Patrick gave me to jump right in with our women’s teams while he was the head coach,” Holland said. “I think our personalities balanced each other out and we could get the most out of our women. It was pretty awesome to come in right away in the first year and have a national championship 4x400 relay. It was at
that moment that I knew things could reach epic proportions here at TLU. I was all in!”
“Adding the men’s programs was a huge challenge for me and one that I openly welcomed. I remember thinking that I couldn’t wait to have the drive and determination of male athletes blend in with the already inspired women we had on the team. It was definitely a fantastic atmosphere. The inaugural men’s team set a very high standard for themselves and set the foundation of a very strong program.”
Under Holland’s leadership, Texas Lutheran was positioned as one of the premier programs in the ASC and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Her Bulldogs captured seven championships across ASC and SCAC competition including women’s cross country (2012, 2013 (ASC)), women’s track and field (2013 (ASC), 2014 (SCAC)), and men’s track and field (2017, 2018, 2019 (SCAC)).
In her final season, Holland led TLU men’s track and field to one of their most historic seasons to date. Texas Lutheran qualified two athletes for the NCAA Indoor National Championships, six athletes for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships, tallying five All-Americans, while also leading the program to its highest national ranking in program history of number seven in the nation earlier this season. Three cross country athletes also competed in NCAA regionals in 2022 with men’s cross country making their first NCAA Regional appearance since 2019.
In total, Texas Lutheran has qualified over 100 athletes to the NCAA Championships and had 65 athletes achieve All-American status by finishing in the top eight at NCAAs under Holland whether as the head or assistant coach in charge of that event area.
“For 17 years, Coach Darlene Holland has committed her leadership, expertise, and passion to the TLU Track and Field and CrossCountry Program. Her impact on the TLU Track and Field and Cross-Country Program is unparalleled,” Bill Miller, Texas Lutheran Director of Athletics, said. “She started as an excellent assistant and transitioned to being
one of the top NCAA DIII Track and Field and Cross-Country coaches in the nation. She just completed her 12th season as head coach of the women’s cross country and women’s indoor/outdoor track and field and her ninth season as head coach of the men’s cross country and men’s indoor/outdoor track and field. She has done an incredible job. She has led the Bulldogs Cross Country and Track and Field program to conference championships in two different NCAA DIII conferences, she has coached National Champions, many AllAmericans, and has been Coach of the Year multiple times.”
“It is difficult to completely capture in words what she has meant to the TLU Cross Country and Track and Field Programs. She set a high standard and maintained a high standard. She is a winner and committed to doing things the right way. She has left a long term and historical impact on TLU Cross Country and Track Field. Most importantly her student-athletes were not only winners on the track but also excellent students. She has had a tremendous impact on the lives of hundreds of student-athletes who competed in the TLU Cross Country and Track and Field programs. Her leadership, knowledge, and impact will be hard to replace. On behalf of the TLU Athletics Department, I want to thank her for her commitment, her continuous desire to achieve excellence and the tremendous job she did leading multiple Cross Country and Track and Field Programs. She has made her mark in TLU Athletics history, and we wish her all the best in her retirement endeavors.”
Holland has been honored as the SCAC’s track and field Coach of the Year four times, also earning USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and 2019, a feat which only four other women in all divisions have ever been honored.
Holland’s student-athletes have won 122 SCAC individual titles as coach at Texas Lutheran and 134 in total, adding her lone season as head coach in the ASC.

Jett
After a hard-fought battle with a lengthy illness, Herbert Allen Jett, 78, of Seguin, Texas went home to be with the Lord on June 3, 2023. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Seguin. While growing up in East Tennessee, Allen attended Childs Memorial Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus as his savior. Later he attended both Paint Rock Baptist Church and Cedar Fork Baptist Church where he met his bride, Patricia Jett. They were married at Cedar Fork Baptist Church in April 1964.
Allen later became a member of Walnut Creek Baptist Church in Austin, Texas where he served as a deacon for many years.
Allen was born on November 10, 1944, in Harriman, Tennessee to Woodroe & Imogene Jett who preceded him in death. In 1963 Allen joined the United States Navy and served his country for seven years. Following his Navy career, he worked in the insurance industry for a few years before deciding to return to college to earn his degree at the age of 35. After graduating he moved his family to Austin, Texas to work for Texas Instruments.
Allen worked at several different companies in Austin as an Electrical Engineer before retiring in 2006. Allen and Patricia moved to Seguin following his retirement.
One of Allen’s dreams was to become a pilot, which he accomplished in 1995. This led to quite a few adventures for Allen and Patricia. Later in life at 74 years of age, after building a house and getting settled in Seguin, Allen also earned his Amateur Extra Ham Radio License where he loved making connections both locally and around the world. He especially enjoyed communicating with Morse code. Allen treasured his friendships with the local Ham Operators group.

CDC: Teen Birthrates Hit Record Low
(Atlanta, GA) -- Teen birth rates are at another record low in the U.S. The CDC reports teen birthrates dropped three-percent last year. That’s a smaller drop than previous years as teen birthrates have fallen an average of eight-percent each year since 2007. The report’s lead author said that may mean teen birthrates can’t get any lower. Meanwhile, the birthrates for women ages 40 to 44 jumped four-percent and 12-percent for women 45 and older.
President Biden Taps Mandy Cohen As New CDC Director (Washington, DC) -- North Carolina’s former health secretary is set to be the new CDC Director. Reports say President Biden is planning to give the position to Dr. Mandy Cohen. HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra reportedly spoke to Cohen to congratulate her. The current CDC chief, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, is stepping down June 30th.
Concern That COVID Could Be Making A Comeback In NY (New York, NY) -- There’s growing concern that COVID could be making a comeback in New York. Wastewater surveillance shows signs of a coronavirus rebound in New York City and several suburbs including Yonkers, New Rochelle and parts of Rockland County. All 14 water treatment plants in the city are reporting high concentrations of the COVID virus, meaning 50 or more cases per one-hundred-thousand people. The data shows that trend began before Memorial Day weekend. But City Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan is telling The Gothamist it’s too early to determine whether the increase is the start of a dramatic surge.
Spike In Little-Known COVID-Like Virus Called HMPV (Valhalla, NY) -- There’s been a spike in a little known springtime virus that causes COVID-like symptoms. It’s called HMPV, short for human metapneumovirus and causes a range of symptoms including runny nose, sore throat, fever, congestion and breathing problems you may have had recently if you tested negative for COVID. Marina Keller, an epidemiologist at Westchester Medical Center, says the virus doesn’t cause severe infection so doctors don’t always test for it. Testing is mostly done in young kids and the elderly with the CDC reporting a 36-percent post-COVID spike in HMPV cases.
We love what we do. And it shows.
