Comprehensive, downtown master plans on council agenda TONIGHT
(Seguin) -- Citizens will have another chance tonight to weighin the city’s long term plans for the future of Seguin. The Seguin City Council is slated to consider the second and final reading of an ordinance adopting the city’s new comprehensive master plan. The plan focuses on nearly every aspect of living and working in Seguin for the next 20 to 30 years. It also helps to provide a roadmap for the city to accomplish those goals and objectives laid out in the comprehensive plan.
The council tonight is also slated to discuss and consider action on a proposed master plan
for just Seguin’s downtown area. This master plan is similar to the comprehensive plan, except that it only focuses on the future of downtown Seguin.
In addition to the approval of both plans, the council is also slated to hear a presentation on the results of a feasibility study, that’s exploring the possibility of building a new hotel and conference center here in Seguin. The study includes a market assessment to look at if there was a need here in Seguin and if it could be sustained if built.
The council meeting gets underway at 5:30 p.m. today at Seguin City Hall.

Special award, inspirational speakers on tap for Texas Women of Influence Gala & Conference
(Seguin) -- A local businesswoman will be among those recognized during a major event in Seguin, dedicated to recognizing the top female leaders from across the state. The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its 2023 Texas Women of Influence Gala Night and Conference.
The chamber announced last week that this year's Guadalupe County Woman of Influence Award will be given to Krista Moreno. Moreno is a life-long Seguin resident and owner of both Bloom Realty and Diamond Air. She was nominated by a community member and chosen by a group of people who reviewed the nominations submitted for this year's award.
The chamber's press release described Moreno as the epitome of community service. It says for the past 20 years, she has dedicated countless hours to advocating for students and teachers in the Seguin ISD. She has served on the Seguin Education Foundation Board of Directors for more than 15 years, and she also serves on the Communities in Schools of South-Central Texas Board of Directors. CIS provides a number of support services to students across a large portion of South-Central Texas, including student support services at several campuses in the Seguin ISD.
Moreno also serves on the city of Seguin Planning and Zoning Commission, and she is an active member of the Four Rivers Association of Realtors. In addition to her regular volunteer work, chamber officials say she was also instrumental in organizing the political action committees that helped to pass major bond packages in the Seguin ISD in 2019 and again in 2022.
Moreno will be presented with her honor during the Texas Women of Influence Gala Night, which runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Augst 2 in the Seguin Coliseum.
The gala is part of the kickoff of this year's event. Day two of the event continues with the conference day on Thursday, August 3 in the coliseum. Organizers say there will be two speakers on the main stage, along with nine breakout sessions, an Inspiration Center, the keynote speaker, and vendor shopping in the lobby area.
The chamber also released the names of the speakers for this year's conference. The speaker list includes:
Felicia Jeffery – CEO, Gulf Coast Center
Lynn Kincaid – CEO, H.E.B. Federal Credit Union
Sarah Wilson – “True Women of True Crime Part 1”
Melissa Vega – “Image in Media”
Ruth A Reitzel, PhD – “Women in STEM”

Parents Of Trans Teenagers Try To Stop Law
(Austin, TX) -- A handful of Texas families are suing to stop a law that would ban transgender medical care for minors. They’re represented by Lambda Legal, which claims it violates parental rights and discriminates against transgender teens on the basis of sex. The bill states transgender minors would no longer be able to receive puberty-blocking medication, hormone therapies or surgeries. The lawmakers behind the bill say they are doing it to protect children from irreversible medical procedures. Several doctors are also suing, arguing the new law prevents them practicing medicine. These are the same arguments that have blocked similar laws in Florida, Arkansas and Tennessee.
First OTC Pill FDA-Approved
(Washington, DC) -- The first over-the-counter birth control pill is getting the government green light. The FDA is clearing Perrigo’s once-a-day hormone-based Opill to be sold without a prescription. The company won’t start shipping the pill until early next year, and there will be no age restrictions on sales.
NJ Governor Releases Playbook For Youth Mental Health
(Atlantic City, NJ) -- New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is unveiling a Governor’s Playbook to strengthen youth mental health. He outlined a plan during the opening session of the annual National Governor’s Association meeting last week. The four-pronged playbook includes addressing prevention and building resilience, increasing awareness, ensuring those who are bullied have access to treatment, and providing training for caregivers or educators. Murphy says America’s youth mental health crisis is complex, but the guide suggests 35 policies and contains examples of successful initiatives.
House Votes To Limit Abortion Access In The Military
(Washington, DC) -- A federal defense bill is in doubt after House Republicans vote to restrict abortion access, bar transgender health services and limit diversity training for military personnel. Democrats condemned the moves, warning they could not support the defense bill with the abortion restriction included. They accused the GOP of trying to use the Defense Department to achieve an extreme agenda of rolling back the rights of women, people of color and transgender individuals. Republicans accused Democrats and the Biden administration of trying to turn the Pentagon into a hotbed of radical progressivism.
