Residents encouraged to be careful when traveling with loads of cash

(Seguin) – A year long investigation has landed a Houston area couple behind bars. Seguin Police officials say over the course of the last year, Seguin has experienced a handful of jugging incidents which have been under investigation. Jugging is described when suspects follow people in vehicles who may be carrying large sums of money. They say these are typically people who leave the bank to go home or to another business. These criminals wait to break into the victim’s car

or truck and/or commit armed robbery, stealing the victim’s money.

The local investigation is said to have uncovered multiple vehicle burglaries within multiple jurisdictions. The Seguin Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division was able to locate vehicle rental history used by the suspects and tied both the suspects and vehicles to various jugging incidents with the city of Seguin, Temple, and Buda.

During this investigation, the Seguin Police Department requested and received assistance from multiple agencies. They included the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, the Temple Police Department, the Buda Police Department, the Trinity University Police Department, and the US Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force.

Oliver was charged with two counts of burglary of vehicles with two or more previous convictions. Byrd

Byrd last week was also taken into custody by the US Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force, where she was transported and booked into the Galveston County Jail. Oliver also faced other charges resulting in his transport to the Galveston County Jail.

Seguin Police officials strongly encourage those who withdraw sums of money to be aware of their surroundings and to avoid distractions. They are also asked to conceal their cash and valuables. Smokey Joe Williams Field to Host Southwest Regional Senior Little League Baseball Tournament

(Seguin) -- Smokey Joe Williams Field will host the Southwest Regional Senior Little League Baseball Tournament starting on Friday.

The tournament features seven teams from five different states. Teams representing Colorado, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas will take the field over six days in Seguin. The teams compete in the Little League Senior Division, which comprises of boys ages 13-16 years old.

The host team is New Braunfels Little League. The team advanced to the regional tournament by defeating Cuero in the District 31 Championship last month. A team from Seguin was eliminated by New Braunfels in that tournament.

New Braunfels will play West University out of Houston in the first game of the Southwest Regional on Friday at Smokey Joe. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Tournament Director Shelli Harborth says the tournament style is a modified double-elimination. The champion of a winner’s bracket will face the champion of a loser’s bracket to determine the winner of the tournament.

Harborth says all the teams will be in attendance for Saturday morning opening ceremonies.

“We will have opening ceremonies on Saturday at 10 o’clock and all the teams should be there.”

Tickets are $5 for one-day or $15 wristbands can be purchased for the entire tournament. Harborth says they plan to have plenty of food and drinks for visitors to the tournament.

“We do have several food trucks coming in,” Harborth said. “We’ll have

different ones at different times of the evening and then a couple of vendors are coming too.”

The New Braunfels/West University game will get the tournament started on Friday at 5 o’clock. The tournament will conclude with the championship game on Wednesday, July 26th at 6 p.m.

The winner of the championship game will advance to the Senior League Baseball World Series in Easley, South Carolina. The World Series takes place July 29th through August 5th.

All games for the Southwest Regional Senior Little League Baseball Tournament will be held at Smokey Joe Williams Field at 950 S. Austin Street in Seguin. You can find game schedules and results at the tournament website.
