Residents to learn the ins and outs of hosting an election
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County voters are invited to sign up for a behind the scenes look at not only hosting an election but also ensuring its integrity. Thanks to the vision of Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes, applications are now being accepted for the first official Citizens Election Academy. Much like the police and fire citizen academies hosted by other municipalities, she says this four-day academy is aimed at walking voters through the inner workings of the election’s office.
In order to prepare and better outline this new academy, the elections office recently hosted a pilot program with a cross section of carefully selected attendees.
“We saw a need to give voters information. We know there is a lot of information, some of which is good, some of which is not so good. But our goal with this program is to help provide information to the voters concerning the functions of our office, which includes voter registration and elections. We’ve created this Citizens Election Academy that has multiple class modules, and our goal is to package all of this information in easily digestible bite size pieces.
Elections, pg. 3
Elections, continued.
We’ve got hands on labs based on real life circumstances for an immersive experience that we hope will enhance the transparency of the election’s office and the election process for the voters,” said Hayes.
She says the ultimate goal is to make voters feel comfortable with the election process here in Guadalupe County.
“We want them to understand what goes on behind the scenes. We constantly receive comments from those who come in to help us with elections whether it’s to help us fold mail ballots or test voting equipment or even new employees that come to work in the office and not very long after they’ve been in the office, they are amazed and they are like I had no idea of what went on behind the scenes. I had no idea of all of the steps that go into conducting an election. So, it occurred to me that perhaps, there was a way that we could share this information with the voters and let them know what we do and why we do it and I’m hoping that this program will help
convey that information and open up a dialogue between our voters and our office and build a certain level of familiarity that they feel comfortable coming to us and asking us questions and being a part of the process,” said Hayes.
Among those selected for the pilot program was Guadalupe County Auditor Kristen “Kris” Klein. Klein says the elections office is much like her office in which checks and balances and overall accountability are crucial.
However, if it wasn’t for her participation in this pilot program, Klein says she might have missed this deeper appreciation for the elections office. She says it’s more than just counting up the ballots.
“I love the program. I think it’s an excellent opportunity to reach out to the public to talk about elections and to show all of the intricate details and all of the checking and rechecking and redundancy that there is in making sure that our elections are done right because so much of county government is based on elected officials. We have elected judges, elected sheriff, elected tax-assessor-collector, county clerk, district clerk – Elections, continued.
Elections, continued.
I’m going to forget somebody but all of what they do is incredibly important and that makes our elections here locally incredibly important and having good elections I think is important not just for our county but for our democracy and sharing our county elections knowledge will help our citizens and taxpayers be more informed about how elections really work and I’ve been a county employee a really long time but being a part of the pilot program has opened my eyes on a whole bunch of things that I didn’t know and I thought I was fairly election savvy because I voted in every election for the last 28 years. I’ve been a very active voter,” said Klein.
Hayes says there is no cost to participate in the Citizens Election Academy. She says because the program is respective of a person’s time, only four Tuesday course programs will be offered during the launch of this first official program. Those 6 p.m. Tuesday dates include Aug. 22 and 29 as well as Sept. 5 and Sept. 12.
“It’s four modules. Each module is about an hour, hour and a half and we will start with voter registration, and we end up with election day voting in a mock election and the attendees will have hands on experience with all of these items. I just think, I love doing elections. Elections are what I enjoy, and I want other people to look at elections with that same kind of experience and enjoyment,” said Hayes.
Hayes says to her knowledge, there is not a similar program like this one anywhere else and is excited about building those relationships with voters.
Those extended an invitation to participate in the pilot program were Glenda Henry who shared her experience with Michael Barrow; Karen Hale who shared the experience with Rebecca Broughton; Kris Klein and Edward Hayes
Although the program is free, only 8 to 10 citizens will be allowed to participate in this first cohort scheduled at the election’s office at 215 S. Milam St. Those interested in signing up for the program are asked to visit the elections office website at www.co.guadalulpe.tx.us/elections. They may also call the elections office at 830-303-6363.

Senator Schumer Urges House to Pass Fentanyl Bill
(New York, NY) -- Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke out on Sunday, calling for new legislation to be passed by the House that would significantly reduce the flow of fentanyl into the U.S. The New York Senator held a press conference and urged the House to pass the FEND Off Fentanyl Bill, which successfully made its way through the Senate last Thursday. Schumer says the plan can stop the massive amounts of fentanyl entering the country by Christmas, but that the House must act. Congress will reconvene in September, and Schumer wants the House to include the legislation in its defense bill. The CDC says over 65-thousand people died of fentanyl drug overdoses in the U.S in 2021.
GOP Pro-Lifer Says Party Not Doing Enough For Women
(Columbia, SC) -- A Republican pro-life congresswoman admits her party is not doing enough to help women. Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Nancy Mace of South Carolina says “it looks bad” to target military women so soon after Roe v. Wade was struck down. Mace was referring to a GOP amendment to the annual National Defense Authorization Act that would prohibit reimbursing service members who travel to receive abortions. She said she’s frustrated that House Republicans haven’t taken up legislation related to health care and counseling and other services for women. Mace added Republicans have to do a better job of showing they care about women if they want to “take the White House and flip the Senate.”
New Missouri Task Force Studying Pregnancy Deaths Due To Opioid-Use
(Jefferson City, MO) -- A new state panel is reviewing Missouri’s pregnancy-related deaths due to opioid use. Missouri’s House Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Task Force says recent findings show that the primary cause for pregnancy deaths include mental health concerns, opioid use disorder and substance abuse disorder. Their data also shows that over 60 Missouri women die each year while pregnant or within one year of pregnancy. That gives Missouri the seventh highest rate of pregnancy-related deaths in the country.
