Seguin Parrot Head Club Phling Seguin Parrot Head Club Phling

(Seguin) – If you’ve been unable to dip your toes in the sand this summer. Don’t worry. That’s because the Seguin Parrot Head Club hopes to bring those tropical and beachy vibes to Seguin this weekend during its annual Phling at the McQueeney Lions Club.

Party with a Purpose is the main foundation for the organization.

Kathy Seeger, one of the founders of the local chapter and group president, says all folks have to do is first learn about the Parrot Heads and the rest is easy.

“It’s kind of fun to explain. We are a group of people who love tropical music. We basically work because we have to, but we always wish we could be living on the island somewhere. The Parrot Heads started back with Jimmy Buffet and so with that, we are an international club all over the world and there’s actually 14 Parrot Head Clubs in Texas and our whole agenda is have fun but also raise money and make a difference. So, that’s why you hear us say ‘Party with a Purpose.’ Anything we

Tickets still available for annual Allan Dreibrodt Memorial Fundraiser

(Seguin) -- Kids all across Guadalupe County are expected to be the big winners during this weekend's Allan Dreibrodt Memorial Fundraiser. The annual event is put on by the non-profit foundation that honors the memory of Allan Dreibrodt, a local businessman and former ag teacher, who loved volunteering and supporting local youth related programs.

This year's fundraiser is set for this Saturday night at the Columbus Club Hall of Seguin (formerly the KC Hall). Brannon Dreibrodt says the event honors his father's legacy by raising money to support those programs and activities that were so important to him during his life. The

do involves raising money so this weekend is our 13th annual Phling and so what we do with that is basically just have a big tropical party with air condition,” said Seeger.

Seeger says this year’s Phling will again include a full night of entertainment. She says on tap for that night will be a catered meal, beverages, silent auction, ticket raffle and live music by the Jonas Lorence Band.

“We have a little over 100 silent auction items and then we have three large raffle items. One is a Port A package. We have a lottery tree. We also have a booze wagon. You get food. We will have shrimp – grilled shrimp and peeled shrimp, pork steaks, potatoes and then also it will include frozen margaritas, sangrias, beer – one of our members is making 500 Jello shots. All that is included along with the live music and dancing,” said Seeger.

Seeger says each year, local non-profits have benefited from these folks getting together and having a great time. Phling, pg. 4

idea for the fundraiser came after Allan's memoir was published and those proceeds were used for the first scholarships.

Brannon says that eventually grew into a much bigger effort that's been supported by the community.

“That’s what it is all about is those kids and that’s what he wanted these funds to go to. He didn’t want a penny from his books. He wanted it all to go to kids in agriculture and so we said what a great way to continue his name, to continue his legacy of helping these kids like he’s done for so many years then starting something in his name specifically for that purpose,” said Dreibrodt.

Comedy Hypnosis Show comes to Seguin

(Seguin) -- Great ready to laugh, be amazed, or maybe even hypnotized. Tickets are now available for this Saturday night's Twisted Rich Comedy Hypnosis Show at the Smokehouse and Saloon located on FM 1117.

The night of entertainment gets underway at 8 p.m.

Looking forward to bringing some laughs to South Texas is Comedian Richard Holmgren.

"I've been doing what I call a comedy variety show since like 1994 and I've taken that all across the country. The main thing is it's a comedy show. I do a lot of tricks and stunts and magic and things like that -- get some audience participation involved. For the last six years or so, I've done comedy hypnosis. So, what we will see on Saturday night is pretty much a combination of both. We will be putting some people on stage and putting them under and getting them to do some funny things and then we'll combine that with some comedy that I've been doing for the last 30 years," said Holmgren.

Tickets are available now at Smokehouse and Saloon or at the General Store on FM 1117. Tickets are $25 each or two for $40.

Marion Sausage Supper, Parade slated for Saturday

(Marion) – The Greater Marion Area Chamber of Commerce is inviting its friends throughout the county over for its 87th Annual Marion Sausage Supper. snow cones from 2 to 6 p.m. and a live auction at 4 p.m. A variety of vendors will also be set up throughout Marion City Park. Serving as co-host is the Marion Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition to having the right school supplies, the folks over at the Elks Lodge believe that kids also need to look their best. The Seguin Elks Lodge will be hosting a free Kids Back to School Haircut Day this Sunday from Backpacks, continued.

Sarah Wallace, the community engagement officer with the Seguin PD, says thanks to other city departments and the community, students will be receiving everything they need to start learning.

“It’s going to be a drive-through setup and to receive a backpack or any school supplies, you would have to have the child with you in the

car just to keep it fair for everybody. It is the only requirement in order to receive a backpack or school supplies and it will be a first come, first serve,” said Wallace. Again, to receive a backpack, the child must be in the vehicle at the time of the event.

The Back to School BackPack Drive gets underway at 10 a.m. Saturday outside the Coliseum located at 950 S. Austin St.

The foundation hands out scholarships and also gives away thousands of dollars during the Guadalupe County Youth Livestock and Homemakers Show.

Brannon says they use all the money they raise to help support the children here in this area.

“Each year, we set a minimum scholarship. We don’t set a maximum. We set a minimum where we are going to have to put at least this many scholarships. On top of that, the youth show, the auction, we do Seguin, Navarro, Marion, Cibolo-Schertz, La Verna, Lifegate, we are all over the place,” said Dreibrodt.

Brannon says this will be a fun night on Saturday. He says not only does it help to raise money for a good cause, but folks will also get a full night for their $50 ticket.

“We are going to have Gary Glenn and the 20X Band. A lot of people remember Gary Glenn, he was the lead singer of Wildcard which my generation, everybody knows Wildcard and what’s cool is they still play a lot of that same music, that 90s country so you are talking some great music – of course, there’s a dance. You can’t not dance to that music, a great dinner by Next Door Catering, silent auction, live auction, gun raffles, we have a liquor raffle so many great great items that we have gotten this year. I’m really

looking forward to seeing the final tally,” said Dreibrodt.

Allan Dreibrodt suffered from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and lost his battle several years ago. Despite the limitations caused by the disease, Allan always supported the youth in this community. Brannon says his dad remained positive about his life even during some of the most challenging days. He says that's one of the reasons why they continue to work hard to keep that legacy alive.

“Near the end, somebody asked him one time, ‘man, what would you do if you could rewind time and not have this disease?’ And dad just kind of sat there for a second and he said ‘I wouldn’t change a thing.’ ‘While this is was a horrible’ – of course I had to watch my hero dwindle in front of my eyes, but he said ‘while this was horrible, this made me who I am. This disease brought me closer to my family and brought me closer to my God so that in itself, shows the kind of person that he was. That he was able to take something like that and in his eyes, make it a positive,” said Dreibrodt.

The doors open at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Columbus Club Hall. The dance begins at 7 p.m. and the auction kicks off at 9 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet. Sponsorships and other donations are also still available. For more information, call 830-8321476 or 830-305-6037.

Marion Bulldogs Get Underway with 2023 Football Workouts

(Marion) -- The first week of football practice continues under the hot Texas sun for area high schools.

The Seguin Matadors, Navarro Panthers and Marion Bulldogs are getting ready for the 2023 season which gets started in a little over three weeks.

The Bulldogs will open the season with a road trip to Hondo on August 25th. Marion will look to make it back-to-back victories over the Owls after edging out Hondo 21-20 in the 2022 season opener in Marion.

Bulldog head coach Ryne Miller says his team has had a good week so far and they’re eager to start the season.

“It’s going great. We started Monday and we have a great group of seniors leading this group,” Miller said. “All these guys came ready to go to work and they’re excited for a challenge. The standards and expectations have been raised this year just like every year and these guys are ready to go to work and have a great football season.”

2022 District 13-3A Newcomer of the Year Bo Stahl is back to lead the Marion offense. Stahl ran for 1,144 yards with 11 touchdowns while playing primarily at running back as a junior last season. He filled in at quarterback for injured starter Dillon Sanchez for three games last year. With Sanchez lost to graduation, Miller says Stahl will be the starting quarterback this year.

On defense, junior Hadley Mote is back to lead the unit. Mote was an AllDistrict selection at linebacker as a sophomore for the Bulldogs during the 2022 campaign.

Marion, Seguin and Navarro continue with their first week workouts today. Seguin opens their season on the 25th at Alamo Heights. The Panthers will host state power Navasota in Geronimo that night.

We will preview the seasons for all three teams next week on KWED. Be listening for those reports on AM 1580 and you be able to read those previews as well online at our website, SeguinToday.com.
