KWED wins prestigious Public Service Award from TAB

(Austin) -- Seguin radio station AM 1580 KWED picked up some hardware at this year’s Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) Convention and Trade Show. KWED was one of only a handful of radio and television stations honored with the Bonner McLane Public Service Award.

TAB President Oscar Rodriguez says the awards recognize broadcasters that are “dedicated to serving their local communities by helping grow and strengthen the cultural and economic fabric of the Lone Star State.”

KWED earned the award in the Small Market Radio category. Darren Dunn, general manager and partner for KWED radio, says it was a honor to be recognized by the TAB.

“I feel like the radio station and our company tries to uplift this community with everything that we do, but we highlighted our annual KWED Holiday Food & Toy Drive. The event raises money and accepts new toys and non-perishable food items to benefit the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa program and the community’s food pantry -- The Christian Cupboard. City hires firm to help with reviews of Navarro High School project

(Seguin) -- The Navarro ISD is moving forward with its plans to soon begin construction on its new high school. While the district gets closer to its official groundbreaking, the city of Seguin is also working to make sure the plans for the project meet all of its requirements.

The city this week agreed to hire BB Inspections to handle plan review services for the Navarro High School Project. Planning Director Pamela Centeno says it’s not unusual for the city to hire an outside firm to conduct these services on the city’s behalf.

“The city of Seguin already has third party services for inspections and has a contract also for plan review. However, the current contract that we utilize is set up on an hourly rate for plan reviews or a plan review for residential. For a large project like Navarro High School, that has now been submitted for review, it needs a different price/fee structure setup for that, so the city of Seguin is proposing to utilize the BB Inspections who we currently use for our residential inspections and plan reviews as needed for the Navarro High School plan review,” said Centeno.

The council only approved the plan review services at this time, but Centeno says that BB Inspections is also expected to be hired to conduct the building inspections on the project once construction begins on the new high school.

“This is just for the plan review at this time. This is also not about the fee charged to the school. We will bring that back to you at a future meeting. We have proposed

it for the next meeting but I think we are going to move that to the first week in September. That way we also have an opportunity to reach out to Navarro ISD who had requested consideration for a waiver to the actual fee charged to the school,” said Centeno.

The school district has indeed requested that the city waive most of its fees in relationship to the project. The council held brief discussions on that request earlier this year, but no action was taken. Once the plan review and inspection contracts with BB Inspections are finalized, the request for fee waivers will likely again be presented to the city council for possible approval.

Navarro ISD officials say they hope to officially break ground on the project later this month. The construction schedule calls for the new campus to be open in the fall of 2025.

Man’s body discovered in area fire

(New Braunfels) — The Guadalupe County Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing its investigation into a structure fire that claimed the life of a male resident.

Fire crews just before 2 a.m. Monday responded to the 300 block of Skytrail Drive, for a structure fire. During suppression efforts, fire crews learned that one male occupant of the residence was unaccounted for. Unfortunately, the victim was later found in the garage of the home.

While official identification and cause of death are pending

an autopsy by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office, the victim is believed to be the 54-yearold homeowner.

Man flees in vehicle, deputies reportedly forced to fire weapons

(Guadalupe County) –Investigation continues into an early morning incident that forced Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Deputies to fire their weapons at a vehicle. Chief Deputy Joshua Ray the incident was reported at 2 a.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Union Wine Road. He says deputies were initially called out to the property for a verbal disturbance.

“Deputies arrived and were confronted by a male suspect who denied them access to the property. The male suspect ran to his vehicle and began driving erratically on the property and at one point drove his vehicle at a high speed towards deputies.

Deputies discharged their firearms at the vehicle. After the suspect left the scene in his vehicle, deputies lost sight of him,” said Ray.

The suspect has not been apprehended but is believed to have fled the local area. Ray says no one was injured during the incident. The case remains under investigation by the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Rangers.

Following an assessment of the scene and collecting witness statements, the Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the fire’s origin and cause.

Assisting Agencies included the Lake Dunlap Volunteer Fire Department, Marion Volunteer Fire Department, New Braunfels Fire Department, McQueeney Volunteer Fire Department, Guadalupe County Fire Rescue, Schertz EMS, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Award, continued.

Our staff has been hosting this event for more than a decade and it’s really our way to give back to the community during the holiday season. We want every child to have a special gift during the Christmas season, but we also want to make sure that our community is wellfed throughout each year. We bring special guests together for the event, including elected officials, community volunteers and students from the Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD and Texas Lutheran University. Those folks stand, and in some cases, perform, outside the radio station each year as a way to help support the Christian Cupboard and Blue Santa. It’s an amazing thing to see,” said Dunn.

Dunn says the award is nice, but they don’t do these kinds of things for awards. He says the station exists to provide service to the community.

“KWED has been such a big part of Seguin and Guadalupe County since the late 1940’s. We are there during the best and worst

of times. We try to be a voice of reason, support, and truth for the entire community. We do that through our radio station, our newspaper (Seguin Daily News), our monthly magazine (Seguin Today), and through our website (seguintoday.com). We love all things Seguin, and we are constantly looking for ways that we can help to make this community a better place to live, work and play,” said Dunn.

The TAB Convention & Trade Show was held August 2-3 at the JW Marriot in downtown Austin. The Bonner McLane Public Service awards were handed out during the TAB’s Leadership Breakfast held on August 3. The award is named after Bonner McLane, who was TAB’s first Executive Director. He died in 1987.

The other public service award winners include KXAN-TV Austin (Large Market TV), KBTX-TV Bryan-College Station (Medium Market TV), KTAB/KRBC-TV Abilene (Small Market TV), and Cox Media Group Houston (Large Market Radio).

Navarro football 2023 preview: Panthers return several All-District senior defenders and will be challenged by tough schedule

(Geronimo) -- The Navarro Panthers bring back a wealth of experience on defense and they’ll face a tough schedule both in district and non-district during the 2023 high school football season.

Practices are taking place for the Panthers with the season less than weeks away. Navarro head coach Rod Blount is in his sixth year at the helm. The Panthers have advanced at least three rounds in the UIL playoffs in each year of Blount’s five seasons as coach.

Navarro will face a gauntlet of a schedule this year and it starts in non-district on August 25th with the Navasota Rattlers at Erwin-Lee Field in Geronimo. Blount says the first four games of the season will test his team during the nondistrict season.

“We’ve got Navasota. They’re a dark horse to win the region. They played well last year and I think they’re returning nine and nine (starters on offense and defense). So, that’s gonna be a tough ballgame,” Blount said. “And then Cuero, we always know what Cuero has and they’re ready to play. Smithville is bringing back a ton. Their lines are gonna be the strongest in a long time. And La Vernia is also ranked high in 4A Division-I again as well. So, they’re gonna get us ready to play. We gotta make sure we stay healthy throughout that season, but it’s gonna for sure get us ready for district play.”

In the Panthers’ district last year, the four qualifying teams from District 13-4A swept through the other districts in the UIL Division-II Bi-District and Area playoff rounds. The Panthers along with Jarrell, Wimberley and Lago Vista all reached the regional semifinals from the district. Lago Vista

would eliminate Navarro and Wimberley would take out Jarrell in the semi’s. The Texans then beat the Vikings en route to the state championship where they would fall to Carthage.

For Navarro this year, the defensive unit features a number of returning seniors who were All-District selections as juniors in 2022. Defensive end Landun Taylor, inside linebacker Hayden Toliver and outside linebacker Nicholas Schwarzlose were First Team All-District last year. Linebackers Gabriel Rangel and Jacob Arias, defensive back Diego Chapa and lineman Matthew Richardson are back from the 2022 All-District Second Team.

Blount says his players on defense are putting in the work at practice to be the best in the state.

“Defense is flying to the football right now and we’re really excited about that,” Blount said. “The kids believe in themselves. They know they played really well last year, most of them as juniors and they want to make a statement and they want to be the best defense in the state of Texas.”

On the offensive side of the ball, senior running back Antwoin Mebane is back for the Panther Slot-T attack after earning First Team All-District accolades last season. Mebane averaged 105.7 yards rushing per game in six contests last year. Senior Colton Schuelke is battling young challengers to replace the departing Bryce Nall at quarterback.

Around 100 players are trying out for the football team at Navarro High School this year as the Panthers look to make another deep postseason run in 2023.

Arizona Heat Kills Honeybees In Extreme Weather (Phoenix, AZ) -- Honeybees are dying off in extreme Arizona heat. An entomologist told CNN it’s a “major concern” since the bees can forage up to 113 degrees, but the state has had many days soar over that. Experts are worried about the increasing number of dead honeybees, which are vital to the ecosystem. An Arizona beekeeper adds the heat is melting the bee’s homes and other bee colonies are attacking them because of food scarcity.

Summer Covid Cases On Upswing (San Diego, CA) -- It’s summer, so doctors expect it, but COVID cases are on the upswing. As of July, more people are testing positive and more people are going to the hospital. In San Diego County in California, 55 people with Covid went to the hospital on July 20th; that’s a near-historic low, but an uptick over the past two weeks. The county has also detected coronavirus in the wastewater. Experts say that’s the most immediate signal of current spread in the community; the level has also increased, although nowhere near last year’s levels. Doctors say it’s a reminder, covid is still around and you STILL have to take precautions. This follows reports from the East Coast, where New York and New Jersey are seeing increased cases of COVID as well.
