Navarro ISD welcomes first day of school

(Geronimo) -- It’s back to hitting the books for students in the Navarro ISD. The Navarro Panthers are among the final batch of students in Guadalupe County to head back to class.

Celebrating today’s first day of school is Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley. Although Epley was hired on during the end of last school year, she says today is the day that she has been looking forward to.

“I got to spend about three weeks with students when I first came into the district right before the end

of the school year but to begin this year, that excited for that first day, there is nothing like it and to be a part of this community on that first day welcoming our students back is just beyond words. I know it’s an opportunity for us to make connections and to start off on the right foot when it comes to another year of learning. So, I’m super excited,” said Epley. As families make their way back to campus, Epley reminds them of a few important notes when it comes to traffic and other roadway conditions in and around the district.

“The first weeks of school can be challenging as we settle into the rhythm of drop off, pick up, and new bus routes. With the road work TxDOT is doing on SH123, we know that this year will be even more challenging. Please know that we debrief daily in these first days to adjust to improve to provide a smoother experience for everyone. I appreciate your patience as we continuously improve to shorten drop off and pick up lines, and balance transportation routes to get all our riders to school and home on time and safely,” said Epley. Seguin Fire crews keep a close eye on barn fire

(Seguin) -- Seguin Fire Units remain on the scene of a large barn fire off Auxiliary Airport Road on the city’s east side. The fire began around 5 p.m. Monday. In fact, Assistant Fire Chief Garrick Herbert says they have no choice but to sit and wait until the fire burns down to a manageable level. He says round bales are difficult to extinguish. City officials say residents in that area can expect to smell an odor of burning hay bales over the next several hours or even days. No word yet as to what caused the fire.

The Seguin Police Department is looking to identify this deceptive duo.

PD officials say this man and woman entered the Tractor Supply store in Seguin and purchased over $1,700 worth of merchandise using a fraudulent check.

They say the pair attempted to enter Tractor Supply a second time utilizing the same scheme. However, an employee recognized them, and the couple left the location prior to the officers arriving.

Anyone recognizing this duo or who has information on the incident is asked to call detectives at 830-4012368. Those wishing to remain anonymous are asked to contact the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at 1-877-403-8477 (TIPS).

As Epley mentioned, those bus routes will especially be important. She says that’s when she is asking parents to exercise some patience.

While it may take a few days to iron things out, she says the Navarro ISD Bus Transportation Department will be doing its part to keep parents in the loop.

“We also want our parents to know that as they have concerns in those first days, it’s important to reach out directly to your principal or our transportation call center. We will have people available to talk live with you at our bus transportation call center

starting at 6 a.m. That number is 830401-5550. We know that it can also be a stressor if you think a bus is coming at a particular time and it’s not there yet, feel free to call that number if you have

any questions or concerns,” said Epley. Helping provide the momentum for another successful year is this year’s district theme, “Memories Made Here.” Epley says when she arrived in the district in late April, it didn’t take her very long after meeting with community members, parents, teachers, students, and staff to decide on the theme. She says for them, Navarro ISD “is a place where wonderful memories of people, lessons, experiences, and opportunities live.”

Communities in Schools seeking AmeriCorps partners in education

Living allowance plus education awards available

(Seguin) - Communities in Schools of South Central Texas is searching for individuals willing to help elementary school students be successful.

CIS is currently searching for 26 part-time members of the community who want to serve students through its new AmeriCorps Program.

Program coordinator Savana Mehaffey, says the program being made available through the OneStar Foundation grant will help create one on one development for students in the districts that it serves. Those districts include Seguin ISD, Schertz-CiboloUniversal City ISD, Marion ISD, and Luling ISD.

“We were awarded a grant from AmeriCorps to be able to recruit 26 members, part-time to go into our elementary schools to help with our students who are falling behind academically in math and reading. The goal is for our AmeriCorps members to work one on one or in small groups with these kiddos in elementary school and to help them get back up to grade level. After the quarantine happened and the pandemic happened, a lot of our kids as I’m sure you know have fallen behind academically due to not having a lot of in-person contact in the schools and so their math and reading have struggled hugely,” said Mehaffey.

Mehaffey says the program encourages an ongoing commitment by the individual. She says that consistency will be key to making a difference and helping to close the learning gap.

"It's a 10-month commitment and within that 10 months, our members would have to work 900 hours so if you break that down, it boils down to about 25 hours a week so we are going to be pretty flexible with the schedule but the only thing that I am personally requesting of members is that whatever days they choose to work on - let's say they want to work a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or however they want to break that up, that they just stay consistent all year.

Of course, college students, their schedules will change the following semester, but we will work with that. That way they can stay consistent and be available for the kids and the kids know what to expect when they come into work with them on their academics," said Mehaffey.

In exchange for their time, Mehaffey says the program does offer a financial incentive to help these volunteers continue their commitment to these children.

“It’s essentially a volunteer program. It’s not a job. There is a living allowance that will be directly deposited into the member’s bank account. It’s $1,200 a month but it is taxed. But it is just a living allowance and then upon the completion of the 900 hours, they will be eligible and awarded an education award of around $3,400 that our members can use to pay back student loans, or they can put it toward a college student. They can put it to pay tuition or for books, whatever they need it for and then if the member is 55 or older and let’s say they don’t have any college debt or anything like that, they can actually gift that education award to their child or their grandchild to use,” said Mehaffey.

Mehaffey says anyone wishing to commit to making a difference in the local schools is encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

"The only thing that we are asking is that you have a high school diploma or GED, that you have reliable transportation, that you can work during the school hours between 8:30 to 3:30 and be able to pass a criminal background check," said Mehaffey.

In Seguin, educator partners will be placed at both Patlan and Jefferson Avenue Elementary Schools. Those interested in education or social work are especially encouraged to apply for an available position in any one of the schools serviced by Communities in Schools. Jackson Pond hauls in another college offer for Seguin football

(Seguin) -- Seguin Matador tight end Jackson Pond announced on social media on Monday that he has received a college football offer from Virginia University of Lynchburg.

The Dragons are a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association. They are lead by head coach Tim Newman.

Back in June, Pond received two college offers. On June 20th, McMurry University made an offer to the Seguin senior. Pond received an offer from North American University on June 19th.

In his junior season, Pond had 13 receptions for 170 yards and four receiving touchdowns in seven games played for the Matadors. During his sophomore campaign, he hauled in 13 catches for 126 yards.

Pond’s offer is just another one of many received by Seguin High School football student-athletes in the last three months.

Running back John Jackson received an offer from McMurry University in Abilene on June 20th. On June 19th, offensive lineman Cooper Neumann received an offer from Louisiana Christian University based in Pineville, Louisiana.

Defensive back Donovan Cray has received four offers. In July, he was offered by McMurry University. In June, Cray received offers from Southwestern Assemblies of God University, North American University and NCAA DivisionIII power Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Sophomore quarterback Corey Dailey received offer from UT-Rio Grand Valley in May. The Vaqueros will take the field for their first season of competition

The Matador 2023 football season gets underway next Friday night on the road against Alamo Heights. Seguin went 6-5 in 2022 under second year head coach and Seguin High School alum Craig Dailey.

The Matadors will scrimmage Pflugerville this coming Friday evening at Matador Stadium. The scrimmage is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

De La Cruz

Candor De La Cruz passed away on August 4, 2023 at age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Victoria De La Cruz; brothers, Felix De La Cruz, Richard De La Cruz, Manuel De La Cruz, Eluterio De La Cruz and sisters Josephine Rodriguez and Petra Camposano. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Teresa De La Cruz; his only daughter Rebecca Soto; son-in-law Roman Ney Soto; grandson Ryan Ney Soto; and granddaughter Grace Lauren Soto.

Candor was born on July 28, 1930, in Seguin, Texas. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1951 and enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 as an Army Medical Tech.

On December 29, 1958, he married Teresa Alvarado. Soon after, he began his career as a furniture salesman. He worked for Starcke Furniture for nearly 40 years under three generations of the Starcke Family. He retired, but soon returned to work at Rooms to Go in Seguin until his 2nd retirement in the early 2000s. During his retirement, he loved spending time with his beloved grandchildren Ryan and Grace. He loved being outdoors and took pride in his yard, his floral gardens, and his pecan trees. Many times, he could be found outdoors watering his roses and plants. He could also be found enjoying his morning coffee at the nearby Donut Palace.

During his life, Candor was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Seguin. Candor and Teresa were part of the dedication ceremony of the church at its current location in 1967 and donated the baptismal font still used today. He served many roles in the parish including CCD teacher, Parish Council Member, Holy Name Society Member, Member of the Cusillitas, Eucharistic Minister and mass usher. He volunteered annually at the church bazaar setting up booths and assisting with bingo. During his lifetime, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club, the Lions Club, the American Legion and many other organizations. He will be remembered as a loving husband, wonderful father, and doting grandfather.

The family would like to give special thanks to Nesbit Living and Recovery Center and Heart to Heart Hospice for their exceptional care and support. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church or SCUC Special Olympics on behalf of his granddaughter Grace Soto.

Services honoring Candor will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Friday, August 11, 2023. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 10:00 a.m. and the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery.

Milroy E. Schneider died at his home in Seguin on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. He was born on November 26, 1933, to Edgar and Ulla (Bielke) Schneider in the Zuehl Community. He was baptized and confirmed in the Redeemer Church in Zuehl. He was an active 4-H member in Guadalupe County.

Milroy graduated from Marion High School in 1951. He joined the Air Force and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

Milroy married Yvonne Raske in November 1955. After completing his military service, he began work in the meat department at Hild Bros in Marion. He then began working for Handy Andy in San Antonio and Austin.

Because of his meat-cutting skills, family members often invited Milroy to help when the butchering time arrived.

After he retired, Milroy and Yvonne returned to Seguin in 1999. He enjoyed working in their yard and loved gardening, completing woodwork projects, and grocery shopping. He enjoyed 9-pin bowling and was a member of the Marion Bowling Club.

Milroy is preceded in death by his wife Yvonne, his parents, his mother and father-in-law, Henry and Anona Rake, his sister Frances Hall and her husband James, sister in laws Claudia Schneider and Jenalyn Schneider and brother-in-law Rodney Kelso and sister-in-law Marilyn Rake.

Survivors include brother Harry Lee Schneider of La Vernia and Ray Joy Schneider of Illinois, sisters Gloria Schwarzlose and husband Raymond of Uvalde and Sylvia Kelso of Seguin, many nieces and nephews, and family members.

Roxanne Patterson, 89, passed peacefully on July 28, 2023. She was born on January 31, 1934, in Brownfield, Texas. She moved to Seguin in 1962 and began a career at Texas Lutheran College. She gathered many friends at TLC, The Guadalupe County Board of Realtors, and Cascades.

Roxanne married her sweetheart, Jerald “Pat” Patterson, on November 18, 1952. This union led to the births of Craig, Kim (Schmitt), and Lori (Hood). Roxanne is survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Pat Patterson passed away in 2010.

Jack Hay, age 85, of Seguin, passed away on August 11, 2023. Jack was born on April 13, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lavon (Jackson) and Samuel Joseph Hay.

Jack served in the auto parts industry working as a parts salesman up until his retirement. He worked at several parts stores and automotive dealerships from Boerne to Gonzales. He enjoyed working in his shop and was a fan of Auto Racing. His most precious times were spent with his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Polly Hay; sons, Scott Hay and wife Debbie, and Samuel Lee Hay and wife Colette; grandchildren, Matthew Hay and wife Lanie, Rebecca Arnst and husband Kolby, and Shannon Canham and husband Colt; great-grandchildren Landon Arnst, James (J.J.) Arnst, Elizabeth Chamberlain, and Jaxson Hay; brother-inlaw Ben Hoeffner and wife Bea; several nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

Ouida Quita Gravett, age 89 of Round Rock, formerly of New Braunfels and Orange passed away on August 2, 2023. Quita was born on August 17, 1933, in Edom, Texas to parents Murphy & Ruthie King.

She moved to Orange TX and lived there for 68 years graduating from Stark High School in 1951. She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was an active member of United Methodist Women’s Ministries. She worked for Don Dunaway Insurance Agency for 30 years.

After moving to the Austin area, she joined First Baptist Church of Round Rock and was a member of WOW. She then moved to the Ranch Senior Community in Cedar Park. She loved living there and made lots of

William Crawford “Dub” Dailey, Jr., age 85, of Seguin passed away at home on August 9, 2023. Dub was born on February 19, 1938, in Manor, Texas, to Pearl (Stowers) and William Crawford Dailey, Sr. Dub married Betty Jo Sherrill Dailey on October 10, 1958, in Austin, Texas.

Dub attended Austin High School after finishing his formative years at HornsbyDunlap Consolidated School. He then embarked on several business ventures across the state before settling into a 30-year career with the Austin Fire Department, retiring as a lieutenant in 1992. During this time, he also helped his father manage the family farm and ranch operations in Webberville. After retiring to the Seguin area, he enjoyed attending sporting events for his younger children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dub never went anywhere without knowing someone.

Dub is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty Jo Dailey, his parents and seven brothers, and one sister.

Survivors include eight children: daughter Debbie Dailey; son Keith Dailey and wife Maggie; daughter Donna Sumners and husband David;

new friends and enjoyed church services and Bible study. Her children and family were the light of her life. She was a huge San Antonio Spurs fan and she always loved to dance. She was also an avid reader. Quita is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Donald L. Gravett and Horace Strange, son Keith Gravett, brother, Lindley King; sister, Carolyn Kerrigan, and husband Bob, and granddaughter, Kasondra Pipkin. Survivors include her son, Terrell Gravett, and wife Kendy; daughter, Shanon Robnett, and husband Nathan; daughter-in-law, Rayma Gravett; grandchildren, Brendan Gravett and Justin Gant, Britney Gravett and Marcel Garrett, Kevin Robnett and wife Leslie, Brandy Robnett, Carla Jankowski and husband Andy, and Andrew Tingstrom, J.T. We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of JoAnn (Josephine) V. Casarez, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend. She was born on March 19, 1954, in Seguin, Texas, where she spent her childhood and formed lifelong bonds with her family and community. On August 9, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones at home, JoAnn peacefully left this world to join the eternal embrace of her heavenly Father. Throughout her life, JoAnn had a zest for life that was truly contagious. She approached every day with a beautiful smile and a heart full of compassion. Her warm and caring nature touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

JoAnn had an array of interests that brought joy to her life. She loved immersing herself in the beauty of nature through camping trips with her family. One could often find her playing bingo, eagerly anticipating each call of the numbers. But perhaps nothing brought her more delight than gazing through the window at home, marveling at the graceful presence of the birds. JoAnn found solace and inspiration in these simple pleasures.

JoAnn’s love for family knew no bounds. She leaves behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the hearts of those she held dear. Her dearly beloved husband Julian Casarez stood by her side throughout their journey together. Their unwavering love was an inspiration to all who witnessed it. In addition

to Julian, JoAnn’s memory will continue to live on through their children: Jennifer Castillo (Michael), Julian Casarez (Monica), and Jessica Montes (Erick).

Being a grandmother brought immeasurable happiness to JoAnn’s life. She adored her grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. Tiffanie, Jeremiah, Sierra, Julian, Jillian, Isla, Timothy, and Emery brought boundless laughter and joy into her life, and their memories together will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

JoAnn’s strength and resilience were nurtured by the love and support of her family.

She is further survived by her siblings Rosa Sepulveda (Irineo), Oscar Villarreal (Diane), Gloria Macias (Luis), Sylvuia Mc Phail (Mike), Cynthia Rojas (Guillermo Sr.), Norma Camarillo (Joel), Abel Villarreal (Maria), Stephen Villarreal (Margie), Elizabeth Gomez (Mario), and Ruben Villarreal (Alma) were her pillars of strength throughout her life’s journey.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Pedro Villarreal, as well as her brothers, Pete Villarreal and Carlos Villarreal.

RFK Jr. Walks Back Abortion Comments

(Des Moines, IA) -- Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is walking back comments he made about an abortion ban. In an interview at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, Kennedy Jr. said he would support a national abortion ban after the first three months of pregnancy if elected president. When asked to go further if it meant signing a federal ban at 15 or 21 weeks, he said yes. Sunday night, Kennedy’s campaign team said he misunderstood the questions, blaming a “crowded and noisy” exhibit hall. The statement went on to say that his position on abortion is that it is “always the woman’s right to choose.” RFK has run a controversial bid to unseat President Biden as the Democratic candidate, most notably his spreading of disinformation about vaccines and deaths during the COVID pandemic.

State Of Emergency Declared By Hobbs Because Of Heat

(Phoenix, AZ) -- A State of Emergency now exists in the Valley because of major heat in the area. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs made the announcement Friday, which came after a record-breaking July for the Phoenix metro area that included 31-straight days of temperatures that reached 110 degrees or higher. The move will help support local heat relief efforts and is aimed at providing resources for future heatwaves, including more cooling centers around the state. Hobbs said “extreme heat threatens our health” and she’ll use every resource she can to “keep Arizonans safe.”

Federal Investigation Into VUMC Record Release

(Nashville, TN) -- There’s now a federal investigation into the release of patients’ medical records by Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti had requested the record release which included those from a transgender clinic. A class action lawsuit says VUMC did not safeguard the privacy of transgender patients. Skrmetti said he requested the records only to look at improper bill issues. Now, reports say the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is investigating. .

Bed Bugs Discovered in 7 Major Strip Resorts

(Las Vegas, NV) -- Guests staying at hotels on the Las Vegas Strip might want to double check their beds before laying in them. In the past year and a half, health inspectors have found bedbugs in seven resorts on The Strip. That’s according to a Southern Nevada Health District complaint, obtained by KLAS-TV. Named on the not-so-desirable list are Circus Circus, Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Palazzo, Tropicana, MGM Grand, and Sahara. It’s believed people unknowingly brought the bedbugs in through infested luggage, clothing, blankets and pillows.
