GRMC to host food distribution event this Saturday
(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center will be doing its part this weekend to make sure families who need food, get the food they deserve. GRMC on Saturday will host its first pop-up food distribution event of the year in the back parking lot of the local hospital.
GRMC’s Elaine Bennett has worked for years to organize this event and says the food is the direct result of hospital employees who had fun during the annual GRMC Strikes Out Hunger Bowl-A-Thon.
“This distribution is really coming from our employees of GRMC. These are the funds that we raised from our annual bowl-a-thon,” said Bennett. Not only are employees responsible for raising funds but they will also make up the bulk of volunteers at Saturday’s distribution.
Bennett says to receive food, families will want to arrive early. She says food will then be distributed between 9 and 10 a.m. or until supplies last. Food, pg. 3

WEEKEND EDITION
Sign-up is now underway for Fit for Duty 5K, 1 mile run/walk
(Seguin) -- Sign-up is still available for those wishing to join Seguin’s first responders for the second annual Fit for Duty 5K and 1-Mile Run/Walk this Saturday in Max Starcke Park.
Hosting the event is the Seguin Professional Firefighters Association L4122.
Firefighter Celestial Gahley says the idea is to bring the community and its first responders together.
“Our purpose is to bring together police, fire, and community to help close that gap between all of them. We’d like to be more involved with our community and also to show some cohesion between the police department and the fire department that we are all here to
support them as the community,” said Gahley.
To help make things fun, Gahley says the run/walk is being organized with some friendly competition.
“We started this race last year and we do -- I like to say -- a friendly, rivalry theme just to get some more interaction because there’s the old rivalry between police and firefighters and so we kind of stick to that theme just to make it fun. So, we kind of do a contest to see how many members will sign up under police department and how many will sign up under firefighters and we designate that by t-shirt color so red or blue so they will pick one of those, and like I say, it’s just a run/ walk whatever people would like to
do. We’d like the entire community to be involved. So there’s nobody not eligible for this whether it’s small children, adults -- anybody and everybody that you can think of not just (here in) Seguin,” said Gahley.
The 5K run/walk gets underway at 7 a.m. followed by the 1 mile race at 8 a.m. Both races will begin at the large pavilion located on the park’s east side.
Registration for the event is encouraged in advance at https:// www.athleteguild.com/event/ seguin-tx/2023-seguin-firstrespondersfit-for-duty-5k1mi.
Late registration and packet pick-up will be held at 6 a.m. Saturday.

York Creek VFD to host BBQ fundraiser
Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Zorn) -- If you are looking to support an area volunteer fire department, then York Creek VFD's annual BBQ and Auction is the event you will want to be at this weekend. The fire department will be hosting its annual fundraiser on Saturday at its firehouse located at 9951 FM 1101.
Assistant Fire Chief Scott Robinson says the community throughout the county and surrounding areas are invited.
"We will have the barbecue at 5 p.m. To-go plates will be offered as well. For folks who are able to hang out and join us, there will be live music. We will have the auction which kicks off at I believe around 7 p.m. It will give people time to eat and socialize before we move into that mode. There will be some activities for kids out there. Every year, we've got a couple of different folks that bring out bouncy castles and they do face painting -- just stuff for kids to do and honestly, after that, it's really just a lot of fellowship," said Robinson.
This year, the fundraiser is even more pressing for the VFD as it looks to replace an important piece of equipment. Robinson says like all VFDs, having the right equipment is crucial when responding to those emergency calls.
"As volunteer fire departments go, we work off a county subsidy which is provided to us by the county government and that part of it we greatly appreciate it but we also seek additional funding support from the community and through grants. One of the things that we are striving to do this go around is one of our wildland trucks is 21 years old and is definitely in need of replacement. We have
unfortunately had to put a lot of time and money into keeping that truck operational and it's becoming a costly thing so one of the objectives is to replace that truck which is kind of our focal point with the fundraiser this year," said Robinson.
BBQ plates are $12 each and include brisket, potato salad, beans plus all the trimmings. Those unable to attend the fundraiser but who would still like to support the York Creek VFD are asked to send a message via Facebook or call 512-738-7159.
Food, continued.
“This food distribution is a little bit different. It’s a first come, first serve. It’s going to be very important to show up. We will register you onsite so you will see our volunteers working with you as you drive up. We have the route posted on our Facebook. We know it’s really hot out there so we want to keep everyone hydrated. Just as a reminder, bring an ice chest with you. Bring water for yourself in your car as you wait. The San Antonio Food Bank truck will arrive at 8 that way we can get started at 9. We will be distributing over 10,000 pounds of food within this hour. Normally during this time of year, produce is really the heavy product that is on the truck. So with that said, you want to have the
appropriate cooler or something of that nature in your car. We are going to work as fast as we can to get you through the line and get you home to enjoy the food that the food bank has provided,” said Bennett.
The drive-through line will operate in the back parking lot of GRMC. Drivers are reminded to not block driveways or entry into the Walmart parking lot while waiting for food.

Seguin Matadors kick off season with Alamo Heights Friday night on KWED radio
(Alamo Heights) -- The 2023 high school football season starts Friday night for the Seguin Matadors.
The Mats will be on the road at Alamo Heights in a rematch of last year’s season opener won by Seguin 42-39 at Matador Stadium. The Mules had a number of suspensions going into that game, mostly seniors who were lost to graduation but the San Antonio Express-News still ranks the Mules as the number two Sub-Class 6A team in the area.
Seguin head coach Craig Dailey says the Matador defense will need to key in on Alamo Heights junior Michael Terry, who plays quarterback and will also line up at wide receiver. Dailey says Terry is the Mules’ play-maker who will get the ball a lot.
For the Matadors offensively, Dailey says the Mules’ defense will present his team with a lot of different looks.
“Honestly, they give you a little bit of
everything so we gotta take what they give us,” Dailey said. “They’ll play off ten, 15 yards from you and dare you to throw underneath. And then the next snap, they’ll be in your face and bring in everybody. So, our kids are gonna need to do a good job of applying their rules and take what the defense gives us.”
Kickoff between Alamo Heights and Seguin is set for 7 O’clock Friday night. And you’ll hear the game right here on KWED. Our High School Football Friday Night coverage starts at 6:15 with the Navarro Panther Report with Head Coach Rod Blount followed by the Marion Bulldog Report with Head Coach Ryne Miller. The Panthers host Navasota on Friday while the Bulldogs are on the road at Hondo.
We’ll have our Matador pre-game show from Alamo Heights High School right after the Bulldog report where we’ll hear more from coach Dailey during the Seguin Matador Report. It’s all apart of
our High School Football Friday Night coverage on AM 1580 and streaming online worldwide at SeguinToday.com.
(Belton) -- There are a couple games of note Thursday night on the high school football schedule. Seguin’s opponent next week, the New Braunfels Unicorns are in Belton tonight to take on Denton Ryan.
New Braunfels came from behind to beat the Raiders 34-33 in last year’s season opener. Kickoff between Ryan and New Braunfels is set for 7 p.m. at Crusader Stadium on the campus of Mary Hardin-Baylor University.
(Laredo) -- And Seguin’s District 12-5A foe Boerne-Champion is in action Thursday night. The Chargers are in Laredo to take on United South. That game starts at 7 O’clock at Bill Johnson Stadium down in Laredo.

Biden To Spend 1B$ On Midstage COVID Vaccine Trials
(Washington, DC) -- The Biden administration says it’s allocating one-billion dollars for mid stage COVID vaccine trials. A White House official said in a news conference Tuesday that the billion dollars will be split among four biotech companies and that trials are set to begin this winter. The administration is also allocating 300-million dollars for the development of a new monoclonal antibody to protect people who are immunocompromised. Those trials are expected to begin this fall.
Third Of Adults Believe COVID-19 Vaccine Misinformation (San Francisco, CA) -- A new survey says a third of adults believe misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines. That’s according to a poll by KFF. Nearly all respondents said they had heard of the false claims, with 96-percent saying they knew of at least one of the 10 claims they were asked about. The most widespread involved COVID vaccines. A third of the participants said they thought COVID vaccines “caused thousands of sudden deaths in otherwise healthy people,” with 10-percent saying they think it’s “definitely true” and 23-percent saying it’s “probably true.” Close to a third also said they thought ivermectin, a parasitic deworming medication, was an effective COVID treatment.
One In Every Five Women Mistreated While Receiving Maternity Care (Atlanta, GA) -- About one in every five women are mistreated while receiving maternity care, and close to a third face discrimination. That’s according to a new CDC report. Those experiences are even more common for Black, Hispanic or multiracial mothers. About 30-percent of them faced mistreatment, and 40-percent said they were discriminated against. Chief Medical Officer for the CDC Dr. Debra Houry said in a statement that the healthcare community needs “to do all we can to make sure we are delivering equitable and respectful care to women during pregnancy and delivery.”
CDC Warns About Nationwide Salmonella Outbreak Tied To Pet Turtles (Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is warning about a nationwide salmonella outbreak tied to pet turtles. There’ve been 26 salmonella cases across eleven states from last October to mid-July. All involve people who bought tiny turtles online, in pet stores or at reptile shows. The CDC is now issuing a warning about buying turtles with shells less than four inches long. They’re banned in the U.S. because of the salmonella risk but are often sold anyway.
