Seguin hires new city attorney

(Seguin) -- Seguin City Manager Steve Parker recently announced that Mark Kennedy has been selected as the new City Attorney.

Kennedy brings over 21 years of law experience to Seguin. Prior to joining the City of Seguin, Kennedy spent 10 years as General Counsel at Hays County where he advised the Commissioners Court, the Hays County Sheriff and other county offices on a wide array of legal matters.

Prior to that, he worked for four years with the Hays County Criminal District Attorney’s Office in San Marcos as Assistant District Attorney - Chief of the Civil Division. “I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the City Attorney for Seguin,” said Kennedy. “Having worked along the high-growth

corridor between Austin and San Antonio most of my career, I hope to utilize the knowledge I have gained to better serve the Seguin community.”

Kennedy graduated from Texas A&M University with both a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Master of Education degree. He earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law Center. He is licensed by the

Supreme Court of Texas and serves as a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas District and County Attorneys Association, and the Hays County Bar Association.

“I am excited that Mark Kennedy is joining the City of Seguin,” said Seguin City Manager Steve Parker. “I had the pleasure of working directly with Mr. Kennedy on several key issues during my previous employment in San Marcos, Texas. I feel the initiatives that we worked on together greatly benefited the citizens of that community. I have always found Mark to be extremely intelligent, a tactful negotiator and someone who is truly a servant leader. We are very lucky to have him joining our team,” said Parker.

Kennedy’s first day with the city of Seguin is Oct. 2.

Youth invited to take lead in ancestral historical recovery

(Seguin) -- Teatro is excited to announce it has received a Humanities Texas grant for its Ancestral Historical Recovery: Reframing the Self Through AutoRetratos (Self-Portrait) project.

From September 14, 2023 to June 2, 2024, this project will engage youth in the community every Thursday at Teatro’s Cultural Arts Center at 921 W. New Braunfels St. Seguin, TX and via Zoom from 5:30PM-7:00PM. Zoom days have already been designated along with detailed topics which can be viewed on the proposed syllabus document that will be handed out to applicants.

The goal/objectives of this project are (1) to diminish the disconnect Latinx youth feel about their environment and cultural history--which was catalyzed by colonization, forced migration and assimilation; to place participants within their own stories by dialoguing and cataloging oral histories from their elders; and (2) to teach participants how to appreciate the everyday art around them that they will eventually curate, edit and archive in Chapbooks for future

generations. By creating portraits of their elders’ past, they will mold an in-depth auto-retratos: a selfportrait to solidify their self-esteem and to carry with them throughout the course of their life. This project embraces the exchange of knowledge of multiple generations orally and visually (artifacts presented to participants from elders to be used in their chapbooks). Participants will learn research methods such as conducting ethnographic interviews, learn how to transcribe looking for parallels, symbols, and themes. They will also learn how to use audio & other technology devices to capture the interviews, as

well as learn how to tell a story that can be written for future generations to read.

These chapbooks will be housed in the genealogy and circulation section of the Seguin Public Library as well as at Teatro De Artes’ Cultural Arts Center located in Seguin, TX at 921 W. New Braunfels St. Applications will open on Tuesday, August 1, 2023 via our website www.teatrodeartes.org and will be advertised on all our social media channels.

Participants will be accepted on a first come first basis and must be 14-18 years of age, 8th grade –12 grade students, who reside in Guadalupe County. All supplies will be provided. Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin was founded on July 9, 1982 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The mission of Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin is to promote a better understanding of the Mexican American culture by the teaching, study, practice, and performance of the arts. This project is partially sponsored by Humanities Texas, Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin, and the City of Seguin.

Seguin Commission on the Arts offers new grant opportunity

(Seguin) -- This year, the Seguin Commission on the Arts will once again offer a grant program to support arts and cultural activities that promote or enhance the arts in Seguin. Applicants can apply for funding to cover up to 50 percent of their total project cost and the applicant’s match may include cash and in-kind donations of goods and services.

"The Commission's purpose is to support and promote art in our community," said Kelly Follis, Chair of the Seguin Commission on the Arts. "We believe that a grant program is the most effective way to gain a clear understanding of projects in need of support and to most equitably allocate our funds. We look forward to hearing from

local artists about how we can assist them in making their dreams a reality for the benefit of our community."

Eligible projects must meet the following criteria:

• Promote the Arts

• Be within the Seguin City limits or extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) of Seguin

• Be publicly viewable

• Be completed by September 15, 2024

A few examples of eligible projects include, but are not limited to, murals and other public art pieces, arts festivals and events, film projects, theatrical productions, and more.

Local businesses, individuals, and non-profits alike are eligible to apply for grant funding so long as their project meets the criteria.

Applicants may not receive funding from any other city board or commission who distributes Hotel Occupancy Tax funds for the project in their application. Awardees will receive 80 percent of their grant after the official notification and execution of a grant contract; the final 20 percent will be released after the funded event upon completion of a final report.

Applications for the Seguin Arts and Cultural Grant Program are now open on an ongoing basis until funds are exhausted. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on the first Friday of the month, at least 60 days prior to the event or project. The complete guidelines and application can be found online at www.seguintexas.gov/art.

TLU football to kick off season this weekend in WISCONSIN

(Oshkosh, WI) -- The Texas Lutheran University football team will be up in Wisconsin this Saturday to open their 2023 season against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The Titans are ranked 21st in D3football. com’s preseason poll. Oshkosh finished the 2022 season with a 6-4 overall record. The meeting will be the first ever between the two programs.

The Bulldogs finished 4-6 overall last year and 3-5 in the American Southwest Conference in head coach Neal LaHue’s first season. TLU started the 2022 season 0-3, but finished the year winning four out of their last seven games.

LaHue says his team is excited about the trip up north to face a stiff foe this weekend.

“You want to play good people (and) we play in a tough conference. And so, we’re gonna fly

up there. We haven’t flown anywhere in a while,” LaHue said. “It is Labor Day weekend. So, that’s the challenge part is handling all the travel and delays if there (are) any. I think our kids are excited. They’re excited about getting on a plane and going to play.”

Bulldog quarterback Seth Cosme (Angleton/ Angleton) returns for his fifth-year after finishing fourth in NCAA Division-III in completion percentage (73%) and seventh in completions per game (23.2) and being named All-ASC Third Team in 2022. Cosme was one of four Bulldog plyers named to the conference’s “Players to Watch List.”

Jacob Forton, an All-ASC Third Team running back last season and Smithson Valley grad, was named to the watch list following a breakout 2022 season that saw him lead TLU in rushing with

506 yards and finish tied for second in the ASC in rushing touchdowns (10) and third in all-purpose yards (1,031).

Senior linebacker Caleb Giles (Houston/ Lamar) will look to build upon a 2022 season that saw him make 44 tackles including one sack and three tackles for a loss and three interceptions.

Punter Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/ Canyon) handled the team’s punting and kickoff duties in all ten games last season, totaling 38 punts for 1,365 yards (35.9 average), with five forced fair catches and seven punts inside the 20 while adding seven touchbacks on 39 kickoffs.

Saturday’s game between TLU and WisconsinOshkosh kicks off at 1:05 p.m. at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The game will be streamed at TLUBulldogs.com.

Scientists Fully Sequence Y Chromosome For First Time

(Washington, DC) -- Scientists say they’ve fully sequenced the Y chromosome for the first time. That means they have new information that could give insight into male infertility and other health issues. Published in the journal Nature, the study fills in the half of the human Y chromosome that had been missing since the same group of researchers gave its first attempt 20 years ago. A co-lead author on the study said in a statement that “this is really a huge shift in what’s possible.”

Americans May Be Advised To Drink Less

(Washington, DC) -- Americans may be advised to drink less. That’s what President Biden’s alcohol czar told The Daily Mail last week. Dr. George Koob explained that the USDA may revise its alcohol consumption guidelines to look more like Canada’s. Canada announced new rules earlier this year, recommending people limit their alcohol consumption to just two drinks a week. Current recommendations in the U.S. say women can have up to one drink a day while men can have up to two drinks a day. Dr. Koob said most of the health benefits people attribute to alcohol have more do with diet. Alcohol consumption guidelines aren’t up for review until 2025.

Studies Show Swearing Is A Sign Of Intelligence

(North Adams, MA) -- If you have the mouth of a sailor, you could just be more intelligent than most. Studies have shown that swearing is a sign of higher intelligence and also helps manage pain. A Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts professor who has studied the subject for over four decades says the benefits of using vulgar language have been discovered using “a lot of research on the brain and emotion, along with much better technology to study brain anatomy.” A 2015 study showed that well-educated people were better at coming up with swear words than those who were less verbally fluent. Another study showed that those who curse are more honest and have higher levels of integrity.
