Seguin’s Fiestas Patrias celebration set for Sunday WEEKEND EDITION

(Seguin) – Downtown Seguin this Sunday will be filled with plenty of live music, food and vendors.

In celebration of Diez y Seis de Septiembre, the Seguin-Guadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will again be hosting its annual Fiestas Patrias celebration but this time on a Sunday.

Instead of hosting the event on the usual Friday or Saturday, Joe Rea, of the Hispanic chamber, says the group not only wanted to ensure the celebration but it also wanted to offer it on a less busy night.

“Usually on Sundays, people after church, they have the afternoon free, and they are always looking for something to do on Sunday afternoons and this is the earliest that we could have these people to come out and

perform for us. That’s why we are doing it on Sunday and usually people on Sundays, they watch football, and they relax on Sunday afternoons, but this is a good chance for them to come out and enjoy the mariachis,” said Rea. Rea says the community will be treated to fun family events including plenty of music.

SHS Head Cheer Coach invites girls to Saturday cheer clinic

(Seguin) – Local girls are invited to cheer on the Seguin Matadors. Local girls in Pre-K through 8th grade are invited to sign up for this Saturday’s annual Mini Mats Cheer Clinic.

Clarissa Ramirez, SHS head cheer coach, says the invitation guarantees a fun filled morning.

“Mini Mats is a cheer clinic that is hosted here at the high school. It’s an outreach program that was designed to encourage kids. But it’s also just a good time for kids to have fun with our cheerleaders, learn a dance and socialize with some friends,” said Ramirez.

Following the cheer clinic, Ramirez says the girls will get to show off what they have learned by performing during the SHS Community Pep Rally scheduled for Sept. 18.

“The children that choose to participate are going to be learning a routine that has been choreographed by our cheerleaders and they are going to do a parent

showcase that day, but they are also participating in our Homecoming Pep Rally for the community here at the stadium at the high school. They perform. They get announced. They have a good time,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez says the Mini Mats Cheer Clinic is a fun experience that supports the SHS cheerleading program.

“There is absolutely no experience required. All they need to show up in is tennis shoes and some workout shorts. We provide them with a T-shirt, and we teach them everything they need to know. It’s open to anyone who is wanting to participate (pre-k to 8th), said Ramirez.

Registration at the door is $35 per child. The Mini Mats Cheer Clinic will be held from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the SHS Student Activity Center located on the south end of the high school campus. A special performance for parents will be held just prior to wrapping up at 10:45 a.m.

(Seguin) – TLU is inviting the community for some family fun on the lawn.

Extending the invitation for a fun-filled family picnic this Saturday are Texas Lutheran University’s Mexican American Student Association (MASA) and the Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS).

Sharing the excitement of bringing all families together is TLU Senior Sophia Sauceda. Sauceda, who also serves as the intern for the Center for Mexican American Studies, says the groups felt it was important to host an event that brought families together in the spirit of Latinx Heritage Month.

“We wanted to do it kind of as a kickstart to Latinx Heritage Month. We celebrate it every year at TLU and we wanted to do this as our kickoff because coming from different Latinx backgrounds, one thing that is very

“We are having Mariachi Jalisciense. We are also having Folklorico De La Rosa and DJ RG. We are going to have food, drinks, vendors and it’s free to the public,” said Rea.

prominent in all of us is we are so close with our families. So, we figured that this would be a great way to not only get our TLU family out there but also the community families of Seguin as well because a lot of us are from Seguin so this way, we can have this integration of the TLU and Seguin community. We want to build those bridges between TLU and Seguin and so we figured we’d do this for Saturday. We really wanted it to be family oriented but what do you do on the weekend when you go over to your family’s house? You watch

Sauceda says the picnic is free of charge and hopes that families will come out to enjoy some delicious free food.

“We will have free food and free drinks while supplies last. We will be having chicken, beans and rice as well as aguas frescas all completely free. We will be having a vendor market there as well,” said Sauceda

Other activities include bounce houses, water activities for the kids plus a 25-foot screen where folks will be able to watch some college football.

The free picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the TLU Alumni Plaza and Langner Hall parking lot. The parking lot is located off of Prexy Drive.

Trump Vague On Obamacare During Debate

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Former President Donald Trump is not saying what he’ll do about Obamacare if elected. During last night’s presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, the GOP candidate was asked if he had a replacement plan for the Affordable Care Act, and responded that he had “concepts of a plan.” He also didn’t mention any changes to Obamacare, saying he would only change it if “we come up with something that’s better and less expensive.” Health insurance subsidies that were expanded under the Biden administration are set to expire in 2025. Nearly 50-million Americans have been covered through Obamacare since 2014.

New FDA Rule: Mammography Results Must Contain Breast Density Info

(Silver Spring, MD) -- A new FDA rule now makes it mandatory for mammography reports and letters sent to patients to contain an assessment of breast density. That’s because having dense breasts puts a woman at a higher risk for breast cancer because that type of tissue can hide cancer. Experts say women who learn through mammography that they have dense breasts should consult their doctor about possible next steps, including an MRI or an ultrasound.

Early trials show the rate of weight loss appears to be more rapid than what’s been reported from other drugs. Q: With our high temperatures, it just doesn’t seem like fall. When can I apply my fall fertilizer?

A: According to Doug Welsh, Extension Horticulturist, do not apply your fall fertilizer until your warm season lawn (Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia) stops growing. After a few cool nights of 50 or below, the growth of your warm season turf grasses will slow. When you don’t need to mow for two weeks that will be the time to fertilize. Welsh’s chart in his Texas Garden Almanac shows October 15 as the date in Central Texas. However, with our unusual weather, we need to check the night temperatures and play it by ear.

Q: Is it true that wildflowers are planted in the fall?

A

: Yes, it is. Late August and September are be best times to plant seed. The Texas Department of Transportation, in an article on Bluebonnets, says that seed may be planted September 1 through December 15 of each year. They suggest planting no later than midNovember because this allows time for the seed to germinate and grow through the winter. During this time a good root system is formed which gives a sturdy plant and many flowers. Remember that bluebonnets like alkaline soil, moderate fertility, and well-drained soil.

We are extremely lucky here in Texas to have two large wildflower suppliers nearby. Wildseed Farms is east of Fredericksburg and is well worth a drive. Native American Seed is in Junction and also has a New Braunfels warehouse. Several seed planting suggestions come

from Native American Seed’s catalog. One is to mix fluffy or small seeds with a carrier such as coarse sand, perlite, or rice hulls for even distribution. This makes it more free flowing when you broadcast the seed. Take half the seed mixture and spread it evenly over the whole area. Then cross back in opposite directions and spread the rest. We are reminded that most seeds should never be buried more than twice their diameter and small seeds should not be buried at all. Some gardeners use a rollerpacker after their seeds are broadcast, although, personally, I just walk all over the area. Then water frequently and lightly until the seeds germinate. Reduce watering over time as the plants become established and rain returns.

Q: What are the fall bloomers in our area? It always seems that nothing is in bloom in late fall.

A: One of my favorite fall bloomers is Goldenrod or Solidago. My stand in the back yard was having a hard time since it is in my unwatered area. However, the recent rain perked it back up. Another fall bloomer is Frostweed or Verbesina virginica. It is a lovely plant and mine have been doing fairly well in the drought. After they freeze, if you hurry right out, you can see the lovely freeze patterns of the water exuded from the stems. Chrysanthemums, Frikarti aster, and Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha) also bloom in the fall. And in the winter and early spring, we have the lovely violets (Viola odorata) although I will be surprised if any of mine made it through the drought.

FYI: Keep those birdbaths filled. Mine are being emptied every day.
