Navarro ISD breaks ground on new high school campus
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD is really “digging” the future of its school community. The school district Wednesday morning broke ground on its future $97 million high school building. The 213,832 square-foot campus is being built south of Link Road, just next door to the existing campus off of State Highway 123.
With shovels in hand, district officials, students, and the community celebrated the long-awaited start of the project approved by voters in November 2021.
Leading the celebration of these new beginnings was Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley.
“It’s always a big deal when you have the concrete poured but I think when the walls start coming up, it’s going to be an awesome site, and just the closer that we get to that and knowing that those things are going to be there for this community, it is super exciting. It’s
just an awesome day to know that we are headed in that direction. I think somebody told me that they had goosebumps just thinking ‘Here, it is!’ It is happening.’ So, it’s pretty cool,” said Epley.
Epley says although the campus will be larger, its prominence will center around the new opportunities that this new campus will afford its students.
“It’s definitely bigger. It is a really an elevated concept of those higher levels of learning that you see 9th through 12th grade so you are going to see those environments that are much more tailored to those diverse areas of coursework so that our students who are engaging in agriculture, in technical elements, in the arts, in athletics, are really getting more specific areas that are customized to really maximize that learning environment for our students. So, they are really going to see this elevated space that allows for Navarro, pg. 3

our kids to have more opportunities to really engage with those things that are pathways for their future whether that’s a career, whether that’s a career, whether that’s college,” said Epley.
However, the construction of the new high school is not just about celebrating the area’s rich history. Epley says it’s also about welcoming the new families who are moving into the district.
“The growth is continuing. As infrastructure continues to improve in the area, we are going to see families coming here. This area is a gem of an area between the relatively affordable housing, the family friendly atmosphere and the values and the priority that is put on educational opportunities for students. You are going to see more and more families moving here. It is a very attractive area,” said Epley.
Epley adds that the construction of the new high school is only a turning point for the rest of the district’s future. She says it’s only the first of many more great things to come.
“Moving our 9th to 12th to that facility really allows us to then transition our junior high to the high school which is still an amazing facility. It will be a highquality facility for junior high and will give us that great atmosphere for those kids to be prepared and continue on to high school. That will hopefully allow us to see some
relief in the traffic areas that we see at Link and 123 but also give this opportunity in our collaborative visioning committee to look at what we will do with this land and the facilities moving forward because the growth will continue and we as a community need to make a really solid five-year strategic plan and start talking about the next steps whether that is a bond for additional buildings. Our growth and our demography are showing young families so seeing a lot more students come in at those younger ages,” said Epley.
But most importantly, Epley says the new Navarro High School will serve as a symbol of achievement.
“I think that it is absolutely a symbol of the achievement and the community and the learning that happens here and I think that what is really going to be outstanding about this building is that it is a true gathering place for the community. The opportunity to have a true auditorium, to have these open spaces where the community can come and gather and celebrate our students and the great things they are doing academically in athletics, in fine arts, in our career and technical areas, I just think that it’s going to be such a point of pride for this community to be able to have that building, to meet and really engage with students and really see the future of this community come together,” said Epley
The new campus will be constructed to serve up to 1,100 students. The district hopes to open the campus by the Fall of 2025.

Martinson
Helen Hope Balch Martinson passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Seguin, Texas on September 3, 2023. She was 57 days shy of her 104th birthday.
Helen was born to Lillian and Berta Bach on October 30, 1919 in Elba, Alabama. She grew up in nearby Fayette, where she began her life-long love of music.
Helen graduated from Montevalo College for Women, where she became an expert on both piano and organ. After graduation, she began her career both teaching and performing her talents in Greenville, and Birmingham; all the while, maintaining the grace, etiquette and charm of a true lady of the South.
It was in Birmingham where music led to her meeting the love of her life, Roy, who was an accomplished cellist. Roy lived in Iowa, and was visiting his brother, a colleague of Helen’s, in Birmingham. They were set up with a blind date by his brother, and that was it - they started making beautiful music together until Roy’s death in 2000.
After their marriage in 1947, Roy and Helen moved to Evanston, IL, where Roy completed his education at Northwestern University. After graduation, Roy was selected as a cellist for the Houston Symphony,
necessitating their move to Houston in 1950.
In Houston, Helen and Roy started raising their family - Ed and Marty, and became involved in the formation and founding of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where she served as organist and choir director for 31 years. She also taught in the Houston ISD elementary system for several years, as well as giving private piano instructions in her home.
They moved to Seguin in 1989, and she soon became involved in many volunteer activities including Seguin Conservation Society, Mid-Texas Symphony, Christian Cupboard, Lazy Daisy Garden Club, multitudes of groups and committees at her beloved St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and substitute pianist/organist at several local churches.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Martinson, parents Lillian and Berta Balch, and her brother Crawford Balch, and his wife Ruth. She is survived by her son, Ed Martinson of Houston, daughter, Marty Keil and husband Don of Seguin, granddaughter Morgan Stubbs and husband Cameron of Georgetown, and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church on Friday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E Nolte St., Seguin, TX. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Mid-Texas Symphony, The Seguin Conservation Society, or The Christian Cupboard.

Rutgers Researchers Achieve Breakthrough With Skin Patches For Vaccines
(New Brunswick, NJ) -- Researchers at Rutgers University have achieved a technological breakthrough in administering vaccines through skin patches. The researchers developed a way to efficiently coat very small surfaces with liquids such as small molecule drugs and proteins like monoclonal antibodies that gained attention for treating COVID-19. Patients would be able to give themselves medicine that otherwise would require an IV infusion or injection. The breakthrough may also make the cost of each dose more affordable.
New COVID Subvariant Accounts for Hike In Mid-Atlantic-Region
(Reading, PA) -- A new coronavirus subvariant is thought to blame for the newest rise in COVID cases in the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Pennsylvania. The new strain has been dubbed Eris. Officials with the CDC say the Mid-Atlantic region has seen a 19 percent increase in new COVID-19 hospitalizations for the week that ended Saturday. That’s up four percent from the prior week.
Flesh-Eating Bacteria Infections In U.S. May Be On The Rise
(Undated) -- There’s growing concern that flesh-eating bacteria infections in the U.S. known as Vibrio may be on the rise. Some experts think climate change is fueling Vibrio’s expanding reach, including up the East Coast. The flesh-eating bacteria, linked to consuming infected raw oysters, thrives in brackish water and is more commonly a problem in Florida, Louisiana and Texas. But this summer there was a death in Missouri, two deaths in Connecticut, one in New York and three in North Carolina. This as the U.S. experienced heat waves and above average sea water temperatures.
Night Owls Have Higher Diabetes Risk
(Undated) -- “Night Owls” have a greater chance than “early birds” of developing Type 2 diabetes. A new study out in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds that people who prefer to stay up late, even if it’s due to their natural body clock, tend to eat worse and exercise less. They’re also more likely to smoke cigarettes and to sleep less overall. The night owls studied had a 19 percent greater chance of developing diabetes.
