Seguin ISD Trustees to name interim superintendent
(Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD has chosen a direction that it would like to go while conducting its superintendent search.
That direction includes appointing Dr. Veronica Vijil, Seguin ISD’s current deputy superintendent as the interim superintendent effective Oct. 2.
During a special meeting on Wednesday, Seguin ISD Trustees discussed its plans to officially appoint Dr. Vijil to the position during its upcoming Sept. 26 regular school board meeting.
They say trustees are prioritizing stability as Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez
transitions to his new role in Leander ISD at the end of the month.
Seguin ISD Board President Alejandro Guerra stated that “Seguin ISD continues to move forward as a destination district and the goal is to maintain that momentum” as they begin the process of filling the superintendent seat with an effective, compassionate leader.
Dr. Vijil is still relatively new to the Seguin ISD having been just appointed as the deputy superintendent in July.
However, district officials say they all feel that she brings a wealth of experience to the district, Interim, pg. 3

WEEKEND EDITION
Fiesta Patrias celebration to move INDOORS
Ricardo Castillon La Diferenzia to take the stage
(Seguin) - This year's Fiestas Patrias celebration in Seguin will take on a whole new look. That’s because the SeguinGuadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce will be moving this year's celebration dance indoors.
Event Chairman Joe Rea says the event which has traditionally been held in downtown Seguin will be held this Saturday at the Columbus Club Hall located at 1015 S. Austin St.
He says rain or heat, folks will have no worries and will be guaranteed a great time.
"It's too hot. We've really just had hot scorching days and we thought, if we had it outdoors like at the park, not many people would be crazy about coming to the park where it's 103 or 104 degrees so we decided that we were going to do it indoors," said Rea.
Not only will folks have the comfort of being indoors but Rea says they’ll also have the chance to listen and
dance to some great music.
"The band which is Ricardo Castillon La Diferenzia is going to be a good dance. This band has not been in Seguin in years. It's been out of the spotlight for a long time and I've had a lot of people already ask me if he is coming and if he is going to be playing. I say yes. So, they are excited about it. They want to hear him. He has a great voice. He's a great singer and doors will open at 6 p.m. The DJ will start at 8 p.m. and then he'll play from 8 to 9 and then the band will play from 9 to 10 and then the DJ will be 10 to 11 p.m. and then the band will close it from 11 p.m. to midnight," said Rea.
The event, which will also include a booze raffle, will be held Saturday from 8 p.m. to midnight.
Tickets are $10 pre-sale or $12 at the door. Presale tickets or table reservations are available today by contacting Rea at 830-556-1663.
Teatro De Artes to benefit from Pecantown’s first-anniversary art sale
(Seguin) – A local business is celebrating its one-year anniversary by giving back to a Seguin nonprofit. Pecantown Books and Brews is inviting the community over this Saturday as it celebrates its first full year of doing business in downtown Seguin.
Owner Tess Coody-Anders says serving as the bookstore's honoring guest and beneficiary will be Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin.
"We've been really proud to partner with Teatro since the beginning. Our missions are very similar in the sense that preserving culture and advancing ideas and building connections are critical to healthy communities and we believe that connecting from downtown to Teatro and back again is important to those missions," said Coody-Anders.
Coody-Anders says to celebrate,
a host of events will be offered from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
"That afternoon we are blessed to have performances from Teatro with both Mariachi and Ballet Folklorico performances and we are super excited to host them here. Our friends at Artable Curiosities will be on hand doing spin art with kids outside under the shade trees and of course, the main event will be the roundup of incredible artists who have donated original pieces for our silent auction
and the proceeds of that auction will go to benefit Teatro and its missions," said Anders.
Although it's been open a little more than a year on the calendar, Anders says it was important that they celebrate their anniversary as a community.
"The last year has been incredible in terms of community support and enthusiasm. People are finding connections with each other, with books and ideas, with great new foods that they've never tried before and we are really proud to be a part of that in downtown Seguin," said Anders.
The public is also invited out Friday for singer/songwriter Dylan Reilly who will be performing original folk and country songs from 5 to 7 p.m.
Pecantown Books and Brews is located at 212 S. Camp St.

(San Antonio) – Thanks to the Seguin Public Library, Seguin locals may be familiar with the word cosplay. But they may not know that just outside of Seguin, one of Texas' biggest anime conventions happened just a few weeks ago.
San Japan took place at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio, where fans converged to share their love for anime.
My little sister, Cat, has been going to the event for years, and after her friends got sick at the last minute, she asked if I'd like to join her for the weekend. So, on a whim, I threw some clothes in my suitcase and headed off with her for a three-day getaway.
The last time I went to San Japan was in 2016, and once before in 2013. The first thing that stuck me when we arrived this year was how much it has grown. This convention has gone from being a relatively small, localized event to something that people from all over the state and country travel to attend. And it does it well.
The convention offered a wide variety of entertainment and shopping to check out, along with discussion panels covering all kinds of topics, from fan theories to how to become a voice actor.
BEYOND SEGUIN BORDERS
3 DAYS AT SAN JAPAN
And, of course, celebrities were in attendance so that fans could meet their favorites.
Cat and I headed to the artist's alley first –– an entire convention hall dedicated solely to independent artists and their fan art creations.
It's like a crafter's bazaar with shimmering neon lights, techno music, and shiny trinkets just waiting to be discovered. We went back there multiple times over our three days at the event, and I swear, there was still more to find. Not only that but the sheer variety and breadth of the art available blew my mind. If you're 'nerdy,' your fandom was there somewhere.
Beyond the artist's alley was the dealer's room. Rows and rows of mini-shops lined the hall, similar to the artist's alley but dedicated to what you'd consider more traditional businesses. The variety of products available isn't limited to arts and crafts; it's costumes, plushies, wall art, decor, clothing, jewelry, and much more.
Friday afternoon, Cat took me to the maid cafe. If you don't know what that is –– it's okay –– I didn't either. Honestly, I think I left more confused than I entered, but that doesn't mean it was a bad experience. After arriving, we were soon ushered into a small ballroom decorated in shades of pastel pink while pretty girls dressed in fluffy maid dresses –– also in pink, escorted us to our tables.

San Japan, continued.
They served us lemonade (or tea) and a dessert of a chocolate cake or apple turnover. Our maids shared 'magical spells' to sprinkle happiness over our snacks, and we had to shout them out and do the special hand movements they taught us –– this is not my cup of tea. Nonetheless, I joined in for my sister, who was having the time of her life.
The maids performed song and dance routines and led a ballroom-wide game of paper rock scissors, and soon it was over.
The next day, Jarred Kindles joined us at the convention for the afternoon, and we took the opportunity to explore something we hadn't checked out yet –– the gaming area. They had arcade-style games, PC gaming opportunities, a board game library, and lots of room to set up any tabletop game –– even Dungeons and Dragons.
"There was a lot of different stuff there," Jarred said. "The hosts were super friendly. I sat down for a while and played one of the PC demos, which was really cool. I've never been to anything like this before, and didn't know what to expect. It was nice to see they had stuff for people even if the costume aspect of it doesn't appeal to them."
That evening, Cat and I headed back to our hotel room in the Hyatt, and kicked off our shoes to sore, tired feet. I'm unsure how many steps we walked, but it was a lot. We hoofed it to and from the convention center to the River Walk Mall and back multiple times a day because that's where most of the food was unless you wanted to stand in a long line for the single nearby food truck or pay high prices inside the convention.
That evening, a few events were happening, and we planned on going to the anime rave together, but Cat was too tired. I almost stayed in, too, but something about having a solo adventure sounded fun, so I got dressed and did it. I met some really cool people standing in line and inside the event and had a fantastic time. The music was great, and the DJ even mixed in some that I knew, making it even better. I only stayed for an hour or two and then headed to bed.
The weekend was a lot of fun, and the event would be perfect for families looking for something to do not far from Seguin–– I even ran into a few locals while I was there! I think the part that has stuck with me the most is how diverse it was. Every single kind of person was there, from babies to older folks. People of all ages dressed up and just PLAYED because growing up doesn't have to mean giving up something you love.
My favorite cosplay of the entire event was a family dressed up as the characters from the Emperor's New Groove. They had the babies in the stroller, and dad was Pacha. Izma and Kuzco were there too. It made my heart happy to see them all having fun together and getting complimented on their costumes. Fun for the sake of fun –– we should all try it a little more often.

Martinson
Helen Hope Balch Martinson passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at her home in Seguin, Texas on September 3, 2023. She was 57 days shy of her 104th birthday.
Helen was born to Lillian and Berta Bach on October 30, 1919 in Elba, Alabama. She grew up in nearby Fayette, where she began her life-long love of music.
Helen graduated from Montevalo College for Women, where she became an expert on both piano and organ. After graduation, she began her career both teaching and performing her talents in Greenville, and Birmingham; all the while, maintaining the grace, etiquette and charm of a true lady of the South.
It was in Birmingham where music led to her meeting the love of her life, Roy, who was an accomplished cellist. Roy lived in Iowa, and was visiting his brother, a colleague of Helen’s, in Birmingham. They were set up with a blind date by his brother, and that was it - they started making beautiful music together until Roy’s death in 2000.
After their marriage in 1947, Roy and Helen moved to Evanston, IL, where Roy completed his education at Northwestern University. After graduation, Roy was selected as a cellist for the Houston Symphony,
necessitating their move to Houston in 1950.
In Houston, Helen and Roy started raising their family - Ed and Marty, and became involved in the formation and founding of Christ the King Lutheran Church, where she served as organist and choir director for 31 years. She also taught in the Houston ISD elementary system for several years, as well as giving private piano instructions in her home.
They moved to Seguin in 1989, and she soon became involved in many volunteer activities including Seguin Conservation Society, Mid-Texas Symphony, Christian Cupboard, Lazy Daisy Garden Club, multitudes of groups and committees at her beloved St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, and substitute pianist/organist at several local churches.
She was preceded in death by her husband Roy Martinson, parents Lillian and Berta Balch, and her brother Crawford Balch, and his wife Ruth. She is survived by her son, Ed Martinson of Houston, daughter, Marty Keil and husband Don of Seguin, granddaughter Morgan Stubbs and husband Cameron of Georgetown, and several nieces and nephews.

The decongestant is found in common medicines like Benadryl Allergy Plus Congestion and Sudafed PE. During a two-day meeting, FDA scientists said their studies showed the decongestant wasn’t any more effective than placebo. Some speakers at yesterday’s listening session criticized insurers and providers for denying treatment and services to lower-income patients. Ellison said that there are costs associated with medical services, but that life-and-death treatment shouldn’t depend on whether a patient owes money to a medical provider.
