A&E presents documentary with roots in Seguin

(Seguin) – TV viewers will want to note the role that one Seguin native plays in the recently released A&E documentary series Chicano Squad. The two-episode documentary, rated one of the top shows today, originally premiered Sept. 2-3 and chronicles the work, sacrifice, and determination of the first-ever Latin homicide investigative unit purposely pulled together in 1979 to tackle the hundreds of unsolved murders in Houston’s Latin neighborhoods.
Among those who worked alongside the team in the DA’s
office was Segunite Ruben Perez, who at the time had just come on board serving as a city of Houston assistant attorney. Perez is now a Harris County Assistant District Attorney who serves as the Special Crimes Bureau Chief.
Although he credits all the work to the bilingual patrol officers who were pulled off their beats to work as detectives, Perez says he feels honored to have seen this revolutionized community policing team come together and surpass the Houston PD’s expectations. Squad, pg. 2

“My association with the Chicano Squad happened because I was one of the few Spanish speaking ADA’s who knew the language, the slang and culture of the Latino community, which was similar to the members of the Chicano Squad. They overcame all these obstacles, and yes, they didn’t know the law, but I’m trained. I’m a lawyer so whatever assistance I could give them to navigate the criminal justice system, I was there to help them as a lawyer. I don’t want to take away from all the ADA’s in the office, but I was one of the few ADA’s that came from the barrio from the Juana Heights there in Seguin, and I knew the slang. So that certainly helped in not only helping the Chicano Squad but also in prosecuting these cases in court because a lot of the victims, a lot of the witnesses were Spanish speakers, and at the time, we did not have translation services, and that was a great great advantage in going to court,” said Perez. I worked alongside them investigating and prosecuting many cases including Spanish
defendants, witnesses and victims. Our association was a natural fit,” said Perez.
Dubbed as the Chicano Squad by Houston media, the team consisted of five detectives: Jim Montero, Jose Selvera, Raymond Gonzales, U.P. Hernandez, and Cecil Mosqueda. In its quest to solve crime, the Houston PD extended the five bilingual Mexican department rookies only 90 days to solve all open Latin murder cases. Not only was it seen as a way to bring closure to cases but to “regain the trust of the community and assist in any new crimes involving Spanish-speaking people.”
“Back in the days, the law enforcement community was not exactly a bastion of equal opportunity. The ranks in law enforcement were not very diverse. Advancement could be very difficult,” said Perez.
Having no prior homicide experience, Perez says the crime fighters who also experienced their own plight of racism and discrimination within the department, in the end, proved successful having cleared 80 percent of their cases.

“I am so happy that the Chicano Squad achievements and struggles were finally documented and told. The Chicano Squad members as is documented in the docuseries faced many challenges such as few resources, very little training, and racism. I think they were set up for failure but in spite of these obstacles, because of their passion for seeking justice for victims, they succeeded. Passion for this line of work cannot be taught. The community could feel the genuineness of these men and thus the community trusted them. The Chicano Squad earned the trust of the community. I hope that that this documentary illustrates to young men and women that hard work and perseverance can overcome obstacles to whatever goal you wish to accomplish. I have been fortunate to travel to many countries of the world where opportunities can be very minimal whereas opportunities notwithstanding many obstacles in our country are available,” said Perez.
Even though the Chicano Squad inspired similar
units across the country, the concept quickly dissolved as police departments became more diverse. Despite the circumstances of the unit and the years that have since passed, Perez says some of its many lessons still exist today.
“What I learned was that as a person of color, I had to be twice as good and work twice as hard not to be considered better but just to be considered just as good,” said Perez.
Inspired to tell the story of the Chicano Squad via the documentary was Sergio Selvera, the son of one of the squad members Jose Selvera.
The historic contributions of the Chicano Squad were also recently recognized by the city of Houston. Included in that original team were people like Perez, who played an essential role in helping the squad bring justice to the victims' families. The release of the documentary was done in honor of the 45th anniversary of the formation of the squad.

Matadors stun Brazoswood with epic comeback

(Katy) -- The Seguin Matadors drove 96 yards in the final minutes capping off a drive with a 15-yard Ian Moreno touchdown run to complete an incredible comeback and take down Brazoswood, 41-37 on Thursday night in Katy.
The Mats were down 30-7 at the half and were able to battle back thanks to four touchdowns from Moreno in the second half. The junior scored on a 27-yard TD run and a 21-yard catch and run score from quarterback Corey Dailey in the 3rd quarter.
In the fourth, Dailey connected with receiver Ayden Avila for a 2-yard scoring strike to pull the Mats within nine at 37-28. On the ensuing kickoff, kicker Gabe Hernandez pooched a bouncer that rolled away from a Brazoswood return man. Seguin recovered the ball, which led to a Moreno 12-yard TD run to bring the Matadors within two.
Brazoswood would drive down field on their next drive, but a fumbled exchanged between Buccaneer quarterback Noah Phillips and running back Jose Trevino was recovered by Seguin at the Matador four-yard line leading to their 96-yard scoring drive.
On Brazoswood’s final possession, the Buccaneers drove to the Seguin 17-yard line. With five seconds remaining, Ayden Avila intercepted a Phillips pass in the endzone on the game’s final play to end the game.
Moreno started his first game at running back for Seguin who were without regular starter Devin Hall. Moreno finished the game
with 296 yards on 42 carries. Following the game, Seguin head coach Craig Dailey talked about the effort from his junior running back.
“Devin’s been out for a while and we had zero rushing touchdowns through the first two games. So, we moved (Moreno to running back) to see if he could do it and after one week of practice I thought he did well, especially on a short week.”
The Matadors finish their non-district schedule at 1-2. Seguin will be back home to start District 13-5A play when they host Victoria East next Friday night at Matador Stadium.
Hoffman VITAL STATISTICS
Malcolm Emil Hoffman was born in the family farmhouse in Maxwell, Texas on March 28, 1928, to Ella (Hummel) and Oscar Emil Hoffman. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on September 2, 2024 in Marlton, New Jersey at the age of 96.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ella and Oscar Emil Hoffman, his son, John Hoffman, and wife, JoAnn Spenrath Hoffman.
Malcolm is survived by his 2nd wife, Marge Jarvis Hoffman; sister, Joyce Boggan Hagedorn; children, Grace Mueller (John), Paul Hoffman (Jennifer), Jim Hoffman ( Li); daughter in law, Madeline Hoffman. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Chris Mueller (Karly); Jennifer Mueller; Alex Hoffman; Jason Hoffman; Hannah Hoffman; and Lizzy Womack-Hoffman (Reed).
Malcolm also had two beloved great grandchildren, Mollie and Annabelle Mueller. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Malcolm also fell in love with his bonus Jarvis family: children; Don Jarvis(Jeanette); Janet Ambrose(Jim); Mark Jarvis(Ardra); grandchildren: Rick Jarvis(Amber),Jeff Jarvis, Will Jarvis, Matthew Jarvis, Michael Jarvis, Josh Ambrose, Jeremy Ambrose, Kyra Jarvis, Marissa Jarvis, Josiah Jarvis, Tabitha Jarvis, Jeremiah Jarvis, Micaiah Jarvis; great grandchildren: Chase Jarvis, Logan Jarvis, Elias Jarvis, Lauralei Jarvis, Dylan Jarvis, Jackson Jarvis, Emmett Jarvis.
Malcolm graduated from Lockhart High School and Texas Lutheran College. He was then called into ministry and attended Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio completing his master’s in divinity.
In later years he did residency in Clinical Pastoral Education, becoming a Board Certified Chaplain.
During his internship at Highland Park Lutheran Church in San Antonio, he met JoAnn Spenrath. They fell in love and got married on June16, 1952. Malcolm was ordained on June 20, 1954, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Maxwell, Texas. He had also been baptized and confirmed there. His calling to serve God as a pastor started in Wilson, Texas at St. John Lutheran Church. He then became pastor at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard in San Antonio. His third church calling was

Christ the King Lutheran Church in Kenner (suburb of New Orleans), Louisiana. At this time, he has a family of 6. The culture of New Orleans was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Malcolm was then called back to San Antonio to Zion Lutheran Church on Cincinnati St. It was here that he realized his gift of listening and counseling which led him to become a chaplain. He served as the chaplain of pastoral care at a brand new hospital, St. Luke’s Lutheran Hospital in San Antonio. Malcolm later served as the Director of Chaplaincy Services for Lutheran Social Services of the South.
After retirement, he and JoAnn sold their home and did full time “RVing” for several years. They then settled in Seguin. JoAnn succumbed to cancer that she battled for many years. Malcolm was a charter member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church. He took much joy in helping build this ministry. He was also a member of the Retired Pastors Breakfast Club, the Whataburger Breakfast Club, and the Saturday Su Casa Breakfast Club. He continued toserve the South West Texas Synod in many roles.
In 2010 Malcolm was blessed with the love of Marge Jarvis. He was smitten! They married on May 12, 2018, and had an extraordinarily close relationship for 6 beautiful years. They had adventures that spanned from Alaska to Texas. Their days were filled with devotions, discussions, family, and just holding each other’s hands.
Malcolm’s gentle nature and wisdom, infectious smile, and uncanny humor will cause many to shed a tear with a smile from a memory of him for years to come.
Malcolm’s celebration of life will be held on September 21, 2024 at 10:30 am at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 416 Dolle Avenue, Seguin, Texas, with a light lunch to follow. Joyce Marie Warncke, age 88 of Seguin, Texas died peacefully surrounded by loving family members on September 12, 2024, at The Blake Assisted Living Facility in New Braunfels, Texas.
She was born October 23, 1935, in Stockdale, Texas, daughter of John and Ida Mae Sells. She was married to Glennwood E. Warncke for 71 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that loved her children and her pets.
She is preceded in death by her husband Glennwood Warncke, her parents, sister and brother-in-law. She is survived by her 4 children and their spouses, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their gratitude to New Braunfels Hope Hospice, and numerous caregivers.

42 AGs Push For Warnings On Social Media
(Washington, DC) -- A bipartisan group of 42 attorneys general are asking the U.S surgeon general for a warning on social media platforms. They sent a letter to Congress, citing the generational harm being caused to the mental health of America’s youth by these platforms. The letter acknowledged that sometimes they disagree on important issues, but they’re all concerned about social media platforms threatening the safety of children.
CDC: COVID Levels “Very High” In 23 States
(Washington, DC) -- New federal data is giving us a look at COVID-19 levels across the U.S. The CDC says data collected in late August showed 23 states reporting “very high” levels of COVID activity in wastewater. A CDC viral activity map shows the highest concentration of COVID activity in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Authorities say people in the affected regions should seek medical help if they have trouble breathing, persistent pain in the chest and other COVID symptoms.
Study Shows High Doses Of ADHD Drugs Increase Psychosis Risk
(Boston, MA) -- A new study out of Boston shows high doses of ADHD drugs are linked to a much greater risk of serious mental health issues. Scientists at Mass General Brigham have found that people who take high doses of Adderall, Vyvanse or dextroamphetamine are five times more likely to develop psychosis or mania. Their findings have just been published in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Stimulant use to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has skyrocketed in recent years, especially in adults.. A study earlier this year shows prescription rates for ADHD drugs rose 30-percent from 2018 to 2022 among people 20 to 39 and 17-percent in people 40 to 59.
Study Suggests Early Puberty May Be Linked To Common Chemical
(Durham, NC) -- A federal study suggests that early puberty, a growing issue in America, may be linked to a common chemical found in many personal care products. It’s called musk ambrette and is used in a lot of inexpensive or counterfeit fragrances and other scented personal care products such as lotion, body washes and shampoos. Researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences believe that musk ambrette can trigger early maturation by latching onto a puberty-related brain receptor. In May, a Harvard study showed that more than 15-percent of girls now experience early periods defined as younger than age eleven. That can produce shortened stature and higher adulthood risks of breast cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

The City of Seguin will have changes to its Trash Service beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. The four key changes are: Carts must be out by 6 a.m., all items must be in carts, there will now be quarterly bulky item pick-up, and you will need vouchers for extra bulk items.
