(Seguin) -- This one’s for the dreamers. For the ones who strive for the impossible. For the underdogs.
This is the story of a boy who grew up working the fields of California, his family struggling to make ends meet—a boy who couldn’t even speak English until the age of 12, who moved constantly with the harvest seasons, never able to settle in one place and get his bearings.
Young José Hernández’s life changed the day he watched Apollo 17’s Gene Cernan on television as he made the last moonwalk in 1972.
From that moment, Hernández made it his life’s ambition to defy all odds and become an astronaut too. As he grew up, he never lost sight of that vision until one day (spoiler
alert), the dream came true.
The road that led him there is long and winding—and incredibly inspirational to anyone who’s ever wanted to reach for stars of their own. Hernández applied to NASA’s astronaut program again and again, faced rejection again and again—11 times, no less.
But he persevered. That little boy who spent years of his childhood working in the fields would eventually make it to the International Space Station aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2009— a mission that lasted almost two weeks, covering close to six million miles, and completing 219 orbits around the earth. TLU invites public to National Voter Registration Day event
(Seguin) – Are you a registered voter? Would you know where to start if you weren’t?
If you answered no, then today, is the day to let TLU take the wheel as it recognizes Sept. 17 as National Voter Registration Day.
The right to vote is one of the most sacred privileges in this nation, and Texas Lutheran University officials are encouraging members of the community to use their votes to make their voices heard. The public, today, is invited to stop by the fireside lounge in TLU’s Alumni Student Center, where there will be free food, a non-partisan election information table, and a voter registration table.
Michaela McLean, sophomore political science major and campus organizer for the MOVE Texas Student Club—a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization founded to increase election participation—says there is a longstanding trend of thinking that there’s really no reason to vote, and that one vote can’t possibly make a difference.
“We want to change that,” she adds. “We’re in an era of information constantly coming to us—and we can apply that information to something tangible, like the election.”
McLean says historically, the 18-24-year-old demographic had been the smallest when it came to voter turnout.
“But in 2020, that trend was reversed now making it one of the largest groups to offer up registered voters. McLean also points out that this election year will bring the most diverse group of voters to the polls in the nation’s history. And that she says is what they “are striving for.”
Today’s voter registration event is free and open to the public. The event will be held from 1 to 7 p.m.
Guadalupe County asked to consider appointing a rep for Texas Silver Haired Legislature
(Seguin) – Guadalupe County is being asked to consider the appointment of an individual who could help improve the lives of older Texans, especially those who reside in the area.
The effort would be through the Texas Silver Haired Legislature (TSHL). The TSHL is described as a “model legislative session which enables older Texans to initiate and debate policies that affect their peers.”
Acknowledging the lack of representation of Guadalupe County in their group is Edward Rogers. Rogers, who is from Boerne, serves as the deputy speaker pro tem for the TSHL.
Rogers says the goal is to improve the lives of older Texans, the fastest growing segment of the state’s population.
“TSHL is a statewide all volunteer non-partisan self-funded nonprofit organization. We receive no funding from city, council, state or federal sources. We were organized and established in 1985 by the Texas Legislature to serve as the voice of aging Texans before the state

And now Hernández is coming to Texas Lutheran University to tell that story and inspire others as the featured speaker for this fall’s Brown Event. TLU’s Brown Event, sponsored by the Jessie S. and Jack Harold Upton Brown Cultural Enrichment Endowment Fund, is a multi-event series that has taken place every year since 2010, bringing world-class speakers and entertainers to campus and sharing them with the whole community. The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. in Jackson Auditorium. The presentation will be followed by a meet-and-greet and book signing.
legislature. I’m here on behalf of over 28,000 older adults and voters here in Guadalupe County. On their behalf, TSHL brings resolutions to the legislature regarding issues requiring legislative action to improve the lives of aging Texans 60 or better. My role is to serve as Kendall County’s rep to the Alamo Area Agency on Aging. We collaborate with many local agencies serving seniors here in Guadalupe County that serve the needs of aging Texans. Guadalupe County is part of that 12- county Alamo Area constituency. To my knowledge, Guadalupe County has not had a TSHL representative in
the past and that’s really not right. Guadalupe County should have representation,” said Rogers.
In his presentation before the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court, Rogers not only raised awareness about the program but also provided commissioners with a twopage review of the qualifications for TSHL representatives and a list of expectations for their involvement.
“It is customary for those of us in TSHL to reach out to our county commissions courts. We are hoping that one of you may know of someone who might be a great nominee for your county,” said Rogers.
The statewide organization recently adopted eight different legislative issues that they believe are worthy of attention and that could draw in state funds impacting the quality of life for aging citizens.
That list will be provided to designated state leaders in October. It is reported that since the inception of the TSHL, more than 200 laws have been directly influenced by the organization’s recommendations.

Welch Earns SCAC Special Teams Player of the Week Recognition
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran punter Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/Canyon) has been named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Welch is honored for his performance in Saturday’s convincing 31-8 win over Centenary.
Welch, a 6-3, 210 pound senior from New Braunfels was outstanding in the field position battle. He punted five times for a 41-yard average with a long of 50 yards. Three of the 2023 All-ASC First Team punter’s punts were spotted inside the 20-yard line. It is the first player of the week honor in Welch’s career.
After finishing seventh in Division-III a season ago, Welch ranks 19th in Division-III with a 42-yard average through two weeks of the 2024 season.
Welch and the SCAC-leading #RV Texas Lutheran Bulldogs (2-0, 1-0 SCAC) travel to Abilene this week to face the McMurry War Hawks in a battle between the top two teams in the 2024 SCAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Hoffman
Malcolm Emil Hoffman was born in the family farmhouse in Maxwell, Texas on March 28, 1928, to Ella (Hummel) and Oscar Emil Hoffman. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on September 2, 2024 in Marlton, New Jersey at the age of 96.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ella and Oscar Emil Hoffman, his son, John Hoffman, and wife, JoAnn Spenrath Hoffman.
Malcolm is survived by his 2nd wife, Marge Jarvis Hoffman; sister, Joyce Boggan Hagedorn; children, Grace Mueller (John), Paul Hoffman (Jennifer), Jim Hoffman ( Li); daughter in law, Madeline Hoffman. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Chris Mueller (Karly); Jennifer Mueller; Alex Hoffman; Jason Hoffman; Hannah Hoffman; and Lizzy Womack-Hoffman (Reed). Malcolm also had two beloved great grandchildren, Mollie and Annabelle Mueller. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Malcolm also fell in love with his bonus Jarvis family: children; Don Jarvis(Jeanette); Janet Ambrose(Jim); Mark Jarvis(Ardra); grandchildren: Rick Jarvis(Amber),Jeff Jarvis, Will Jarvis, Matthew Jarvis, Michael Jarvis, Josh Ambrose, Jeremy Ambrose, Kyra Jarvis, Marissa Jarvis, Josiah Jarvis, Tabitha Jarvis, Jeremiah Jarvis, Micaiah Jarvis; great grandchildren: Chase Jarvis, Logan Jarvis, Elias Jarvis, Lauralei Jarvis, Dylan Jarvis, Jackson Jarvis, Emmett Jarvis.
Malcolm graduated from Lockhart High School and Texas Lutheran College. He was then called into ministry and attended Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio completing his master’s in divinity. In later years he did residency in Clinical Pastoral Education, becoming a Board Certified Chaplain.
During his internship at Highland Park Lutheran Church in San Antonio, he met JoAnn Spenrath. They fell in love and got married on June16, 1952. Malcolm was ordained on June 20, 1954, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Maxwell, Texas. He had also been baptized and confirmed there. His calling to serve God as a pastor started in Wilson, Texas at St. John Lutheran Church. He then became pastor at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard in San Antonio. His third church calling was

Christ the King Lutheran Church in Kenner (suburb of New Orleans), Louisiana. At this time, he has a family of 6. The culture of New Orleans was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Malcolm was then called back to San Antonio to Zion Lutheran Church on Cincinnati St. It was here that he realized his gift of listening and counseling which led him to become a chaplain. He served as the chaplain of pastoral care at a brand new hospital, St. Luke’s Lutheran Hospital in San Antonio. Malcolm later served as the Director of Chaplaincy Services for Lutheran Social Services of the South.
After retirement, he and JoAnn sold their home and did full time “RVing” for several years. They then settled in Seguin. JoAnn succumbed to cancer that she battled for many years. Malcolm was a charter member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church. He took much joy in helping build this ministry. He was also a member of the Retired Pastors Breakfast Club, the Whataburger
Breakfast Club, and the Saturday Su Casa Breakfast Club. He continued toserve the South West Texas Synod in many roles.
In 2010 Malcolm was blessed with the love of Marge Jarvis. He was smitten! They married on May 12, 2018, and had an extraordinarily close relationship for 6 beautiful years. They had adventures that spanned from Alaska to Texas. Their days were filled with devotions, discussions, family, and just holding each other’s hands.
Malcolm’s gentle nature and wisdom, infectious smile, and uncanny humor will cause many to shed a tear with a smile from a memory of him for years to come.
Malcolm’s celebration of life will be held on September 21, 2024 at 10:30 am at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 416 Dolle Avenue, Seguin, Texas, with a light lunch to follow. Joyce Marie Warncke, age 88 of Seguin, Texas died peacefully surrounded by loving family members on September 12, 2024, at The Blake Assisted Living Facility in New Braunfels, Texas.
She was born October 23, 1935, in Stockdale, Texas, daughter of John and Ida Mae Sells. She was married to Glennwood E. Warncke for 71 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that loved her children and her pets.
She is preceded in death by her husband Glennwood Warncke, her parents, sister and brother-in-law. She is survived by her 4 children and their spouses, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their gratitude to New Braunfels Hope Hospice, and numerous caregivers.
A gravesite funeral will be held at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park on Friday, September 20, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jeremy Roy officiating.

AK Infant Dies From Whooping Cough
(Juneau, AK) -- An Alaskan baby is dead after contracting whooping cough. The state health department confirmed yesterday that an infant has died from pertussis. It’s Alaska’s first infant death connected to the ongoing whooping cough epidemic sweeping the state. State health officials say Alaska’s whooping cough rates are the highest they’ve been in over ten years. Alaska has recorded 234 cases so far this year, with most of them being in July and August. State Epidemiologist Doctor Joe McLaughlin said that the last highest number was in 2016, when there were 149 cases reported.
Order Signed Allowing People To Get Mpox Vaccine
(Albany, NY) -- New York health officials are taking action to prevent the spread of mpox in the Empire State. An order has been signed allowing people 18 and older to be vaccinated by a pharmacist without a separate prescription from their doctor. Currently, there’s a variant of mpox spreading in African countries, but the good news is the number of cases in the state has remained low in recent months. Symptoms of mpox include swollen glands, muscle aches, headaches and fever.
Calls To Poison Control Over Energy Drinks Up 20%
(Undated) -- Calls to poison control centers about children drinking energy drinks are up 20 percent. Data out shows there were more than 28-hundred calls in 2023. Energy drinks contain higher levels of caffeine than soda or coffee and can cause problems for children. Both the FDA and the American Academy of Pediatrics say it’s advisable that children and teenagers avoid the beverages, which in extreme instances can result in cardiac arrest.
Schumer Plans To Put IVF Vote To Floor
(New York, NY) -- There’s expected to be a vote in the senate on an in vitro fertilization bill. New York Senator Chuck Schumer says he’s putting the bill that Republicans previously blocked up for a vote tomorrow. The bill would give people the right to access IVF treatments and force insurance companies to cover IVF procedures. The bill would also allow service members to freeze sperm or eggs prior to deployment to a combat zone.

City of Seguin Trash Service Changes
The City of Seguin will have changes to its Trash Service beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. The four key changes are: Carts must be out by 6 a.m., all items must be in carts, there will now be quarterly bulky item pick-up, and you will need vouchers for extra bulk items.
