(Seguin) – Seguin High School is calling on all Matadors to show their school spirit. Tonight marks the annual Homecoming Community Pep Rally at Matador Stadium.

SHS Student Council Advisor Heather Brown says this year’s Homecoming celebration

began on Monday and observes more than just Matador pride.

“The actual theme of the week is Hispanic Heritage. We wanted to partner with Hispanic Heritage Month. This is the first week of that and so on campus, it is reflective for us. Spirit, pg. 3

Seguin ISD, Gallup to conduct family, staff survey

(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD families, students, and staff will have an opportunity to share their feedback on the district this fall.

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Veronica Vijil says the district will soon be rolling out a survey to parents, staff and students. She says overseeing that process is independent and internationally known research firm, Gallup.

“This is an opportunity for us to learn from our key stakeholders, our parents, our students, and our staff. Their honest feedback is vital to our growth and success as a district as we work to serve our students, their families, and our employees,” said Vijil.

Gallup will send survey invitations to families, staff, and students directly. The Gallup team will also directly receive all survey responses. District officials say it is important to note that those responses will remain confidential.

Once collected, Gallup will share its final report on overall results with district leadership. All district staff and families will receive survey invitations directly.

Student surveys, however, will only be open to those in grades 5-12.

Surveys for families will be conducted from Oct. 7-21. Staff and student surveys will then be open from Oct. 28-Nov. 11.

Women jailed following area drug bust

(Schertz) –A pair of women are behind bars for allegedly selling and distributing narcotics throughout Seguin, Schertz and New Braunfels.

Arrested were Aniza Rojas, 29, of San Antonio, and Stephanie Deleon, 34, of Converse. According to officials with the Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force (GCNTF), the women were arrested at approximately 1 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13 in the 17000 block of I-35 N in Schertz. The operation resulted in the seizure of 14.8 grams of Methamphetamine, 13.1

grams of Alprazolam pills, and 856 grams of Promethazine with Codeine syrup.

Narcotics officials say the women were suspected of attempting to distribute narcotics at the time of

their arrest.  Rojas and Deleon were subsequently booked into the Guadalupe County Jail. Both subjects face charges of Manufacture or Delivery of a Controlled Substance in Penalty Group 1 over

four grams but less than 200 grams, Manufacture or a delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 3 less than 28 grams, and Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 4 over 400 grams. Rojas also faces an additional charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2 over 1 gram. The Guadalupe County Narcotics Task Force (GCNTF) is composed of Detectives, Investigators, and Criminal Interdiction K9 Units from Seguin Police Department, Cibolo Police Department, and the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office.

School

the kickoff of this year's

Spirit, continued.

‘Our first Spirit Day was Monday, and we had a lot of students come and wear their quine(nera) dresses on campus. It was awesome to see so many big, beautiful dresses on campus. I don’t know how they fit in the desk. Not my problem,” laughs Brown. “It was really neat to see the girls come out, full out and celebrate their heritage.”

This year’s theme, of course, will be rolled out onto the football field during tonight’s pep rally. Brown says the students have planned some great performances.

“With our Community Pep Rally, we are featuring our Mariachi Matador, and they are going to be playing by themselves and for Grupo Folklorico De Seguin High School – our ballet folklorico group here on campus and then, two of the performances by our Star Line and dance team are both to Hispanic music so we are really just trying to celebrate our heritage here on campus,” said Brown.

All other SHS teams, groups, and activities will also be represented tonight. Brown says Homecoming is more than just football.

“In between that will also be the percussion, the band and other groups to talk about – like other athletics – to talk about what they are doing also in their school year –in their competitive season as well. So, it’s not just for the football team. It’s for all athletics and all of the activities that we have here on campus. So, we really try to celebrate everybody,” said Brown.

Brown says that one of the big draws for the Homecoming Pep Rally is the annual Mini Mats performance. She says the program is designed to showcase and celebrate all students.

“They had their practice this last weekend with the high school cheerleaders teaching three different groups of

Mini Mats so we had the little little guys and then we had the elementary age students and then the middle school age students that will be performing throughout the pep rally,” said Brown.

Brown says she hopes folks will come out and enjoy the pep rally. She says no matter whether you are alumni or have kids in the district, the pep rally is just one more way to celebrate the community.

“It’s really important that we do have cohesiveness between our community and the high school. So much division already exists out there. It’s time to come together and celebrate and lift each other up no matter what it is – if it’s the football team, the volleyball team, the band, the cheerleaders, the dancers – anybody that performs. Just come out and see all that we have to offer at the high school and just come and support the kids because that’s what we are here for. We are here for the kids,” said Brown.

Tonight’s SHS Community Pep Rally will also unveil the winners of the Homecoming Court for all freshman, sophomore, and junior students. The announcement of this year’s Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The names will be announced before the Matadors’ 7 p.m. kickoff against Victoria East.

The 2024 Homecoming Spirit can also be seen beyond the walls of Seguin High School.

That’s because many businesses offered students the opportunity to show their school spirit with the tradition of Paint the Town Gold. Various school clubs spent their time painting windows and decorating storefronts in preparation for this week’s Homecoming celebration.

Today’s Community Pep Rally gets underway at 7 p.m. at Matador Stadium. SHS Homecoming events continue Saturday with this year’s Homecoming school dance at 7 p.m.

Kolb

Helen Marie Tiemann Kolb was born in November of 1931 to her loving parents William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann on their family farm three miles east of downtown Seguin, Texas. She passed away on September 13, 2024 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 92. She will be truly missed by those she loved but left behind a lifetime of happy memories.

As a child, Helen attended Tiemann School, a small one-room school that Theodore Tiemann, her grandfather, started and donated the land for. She would walk to the school from their family farmhouse. Her father farmed the family land around the farmhouse and school. As a young girl, Helen witnessed the beginning of World War II as the skies above their farm filled with trainer aircraft circling the Tiemann farm after the Army Air Corps built a runway less than a mile from their farmhouse – now Randolph Auxiliary Field. She had two older brothers, Rev. Dr. William Harold Tiemann who became a Presbyterian Minister and Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann, an accomplished pharmacist. By example, her parents instilled traditional hard-working principles and taught them love of God and love of neighbor.

A talented soprano, Helen grew up singing at every opportunity, serving God with her voice for decades at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. While attending Texas Lutheran College, and singing professionally part-time, Helen sang at an event on Randolph Air Force Base, where she met and soon thereafter married her husband of forty-nine years, Maj. Maynard Kolb. They had three children and served a full Air Force career living in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California before returning to Seguin. During that career, Helen and her children were blessed to spend quality time with her family at the Tiemann farm in Seguin while her husband was deployed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned home and Helen became actively involved in the Guadalupe County community.

Over the years, Helen proudly wore many hats – she had many hobbies and constantly volunteered her time to local organizations. To name a few, she was a realtor, law office assistant to her son - Judge Kevin Kolb, a Guadalupe County Master Gardner, a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, member of the Guadalupe County Republican Women, member of the Conservation Society, member of the Delphians Study Club, Daughter of the Republic of Texas, vocalist, and active volunteer in many roles at St. James Catholic Church. She will be most fondly remembered though for the things that brought her the most joy in life – being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

As an amateur genealogist, she proudly kept great records of her family tree and Texas-German heritage. She loved to share stories passed down through

Georgia (Bartosh) Barber, passed away on September 15, 2024, in Victoria, TX at the age of 97. Born in 1927 on a farm west of Granger, TX to Mary Millie Kaderka and Lad Joseph Bartosh. She attended parochial school and graduated from Granger High School in May 1945.

Georgia married Jerry Lester Barber in June 1945 who preceded her in death in 1989.

She is survived by three daughters, Jeri Gail Skrondahl and husband David Skrondahl of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jill Marie Chumchal and husband Gary Chumchal of Victoria, TX, and Julie Anne Chidester of Irving, TX.

Georgia is also survived by granddaughter Heather Marie Tobias and

generations about the struggles and the early years of German settlers to our area. Her direct ancestors included some of the first settlers of both Seguin and New Braunfels, as well as important community leaders such as her greatgreat grandfather, Tobias Meiniger – an early Texan-German architect and entrepreneur who designed various Seguin landmark buildings, including the historic landmark Sebastapool, and co-owned a stagecoach company that transported settlers from the port of Indianolia to Seguin, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.

Helen was a devout Roman Catholic and served St. James Church in any way she could – she was the first person to deliver Holy Communion away from Mass to patients at Guadalupe Valley Hospital and loved doing so weekly for many years. She also was a vocalist and song leader and is remembered by many for her beautiful solos of songs like her rendition of Ave Maria, which she sang for many years at Christmas Midnight Mass.

Her family will most fondly remember her for the joy, love, care, and support she gave them throughout the years. Known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, a day never went by without her showing them love in some way. She attended every major event in their lives with, as she loved to say, “bells on.” She made Christmases magical and tough times bearable for everyone she loved.

Survived by:

Daughter – and primary caregiver for the last twelve years, Margaret “Margie” H. Traeger and husband John A. “Drew” Traeger Jr., their two sons: John “Andrew” A. Traeger III, spouse Megan M. Traeger, and daughters Ryan Grace Traeger and Reagan Margaret Traeger; and Steven M. Traeger, spouse Kaitlyn V. Traeger, and daughter Adeline Marie Traeger, all of New Braunfels, TX.

Daughter – Helynne “Lynn” Mary Starcke, spouse Hilmar Starcke, three children, Christopher L. Lawrence, Michael Lawrence, Michelle Van Overloop, and husband John Van Overloop.

Daughter in law – Elizabeth Murray-Kolb; and her son Michael Murray, spouse Tabitha Murray, and son Roger Murray.

Also survived by nieces and nephews: Dr. Terri Horan and husband Charlie Meeks and their respective children, Dr. William J. Steele III and Max Meeks; Lisa Tiemann; Stephen and wife Malia Tiemann; and Karen and husband Bill Blackwell.

Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Helen M. Tiemann & William E. Tiemann, her son Judge Kevin M. Kolb, brothers Dr. William H. Tiemann and Dr. Kenneth E. Tiemann, and nephew Andrew “Andy” Tiemann.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels, Texas on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 10 a.m. A reception will follow next door in St. Mary’s Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that you make donations to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School or Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Music Ministry.

She is also survived by her longtime companion, Alton Mattke of Seguin, TX, and Naomi Ramirez her devoted friend and caregiver as well as nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Booster

(Washington, DC) -- Most Americans plan to get this year’s flu shot, but not the new COVID-19 booster. In a new survey from the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, 56-percent said they will get the flu shot but only 43-percent said they’ll get the Covid booster. Over a third of respondents also said they’ve gotten Covid vaccines in the past but don’t plan to again. Study: Engaging In Arts And Crafts Improves Mental Health

(East Anglia, UK) -- A new study out of England suggests that engaging in arts and crafts improves mental health. It could be knitting, sewing, quilting, scrapbooking, painting. Cognitive psychologist Helen Keyes says she and her research team at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK say it doesn’t seem to matter what you’re doing as long as you’re using your hands creatively and seeing artistic results. Dr. Keyes has found that arts and crafts can significantly improve well-being, not just in people with mental health conditions, but also in the general population. Past research has demonstrated that doing arts and crafts reduces cortisol production, the body’s stress hormone.
