New Seguin Crossing retail center to welcome more big brand stores to the community

(Seguin) -- The largest retail development project in nearly 30 years is coming to Seguin. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday approved a deal that will allow the Seguin Crossing retail project to get started.
The new shopping center will be built along the Interstate 10 Frontage Road and Jay Road, which is an area near the Starbucks located east of State Highway 123. The joint venture is being developed by Collett & Associates and the Alexander Family. The city of Seguin, the Seguin Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and Guadalupe County all worked together to also make this project possible.
Seguin Economic Development Director Josh Schneuker the new shopping center will include a number of major national retailers. He named a few during Tuesday’s council meeting and suggested that more are expected to come.
“This is a big, big deal in Seguin.
We are announcing the Seguin Crossing retail development project that will be home to future tenants such as Hobby Lobby, James Avery 5 Below, and a national sporting goods retailer. We anticipate that those tenants are working to be open by the fall of 2025,” said Schneuker.
The Seguin Crossing retail development will include more than 135,000 square feet of new retail space, and it will represent a capital investment of at least $25 million. Schneuker describes it as an historic project for Seguin.
“This is the largest retail project built in Seguin in at least 20 years -- since the Home Depot was built. It’s the largest multi-tenant retail development project built in probably about 30 years. So, I want to thank you all, the EDC Board, and the (Guadalupe) County commissioners for helping get this project over the finish line tonight,” said Schneuker.

Much like the recent announcement of Chick-fil-A coming to Seguin, on I-10 near Highway 46, this project will receive some local incentives. Most of that will come from a grant from the SEDC. That grant will be used to help improve the infrastructure in that area so that the project can move forward.
“The EDC, as a part of this project, will be providing an infrastructure grant for the project that you just approved. We’ll be appropriating funds for that out of our incentive infrastructure fund. And we’re also appropriating the funds for the Chick-fil-A project that was approved a few weeks ago. We’re just securing that money and making sure it’s ready to deploy once the (Seguin Crossing) developer and Chick-fil-A meet their performance benchmarks outlined within the performance agreement,” said Schneuker.
Mike Robbe, of Collete & Associates, says they are thrilled to bring this exciting new retail development to Seguin.
“Seguin is one of the fastest-growing communities in the United States, and its rapid population growth has driven significant demand for more retail options. Our decision to develop here was influenced by Seguin’s vibrant economy, strategic location, and the city’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly
environment. The national retailers involved in this project see the immense potential in Seguin and are eager to serve this expanding market. We believe this development will not only meet the needs of the community but also contribute to Seguin’s continued growth and prosperity,” said Robbe.
The project is set to break ground by the end of 2024 on a 14-acre site located at the northeast corner of the westbound Interstate 10 Frontage Road and Jay Road. The majority of the retail tenants at Seguin Crossing aim to open their doors by fall 2025, just in time for the holiday shopping season.
Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen says they are incredibly excited about the retail project.
“Expanding and diversifying our retail offerings has been a key priority for the city. This development reflects our commitment to providing residents and visitors with access to well-known national retailers. It’s a significant step forward in positioning Seguin as a vibrant hub for shopping, dining, and community activity,” said Mayor Dodgen.
Seguin is currently one of the 25 fastest-growing cities in the United States for communities with populations over 20,000. From 2022 to 2023, Seguin ranked as the 21st fastest-growing city in the nation, with a 7.79 percent population increase.

Between 2020 and 2023, the city experienced a 22.3 percent growth rate, placing it 25th nationally. Within the past year, Seguin has been the fastest-growing community in the San Antonio metro area and the third fastestgrowing city in the broader San Antonio-Austin mega region, trailing only the cities of Kyle and Georgetown.
City officials say this rapid growth has spurred a retail boom in Seguin, with national retailers like Chick-fil-A, Ross, Marshalls, Boot Barn, Spec’s, and Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply recently opening or planning to open in the market within the next year.
The new Seguin Crossing retail center will feature Hobby Lobby, Five Below, and James Avery. Schneuker says other stores will be revealed later, including a nationally recognized sporting goods store, which has led to speculation that it will either be an Academy Sports and Outdoors or a Dick’s Sporting Goods store.
The major players in the project include the SEDC, Collett & Associates, and the Alexander Family. The SEDC says it is the driving force behind economic growth and prosperity in Seguin, Texas. As a Type A Economic Development Corporation, the mission of the SEDC is to promote and enhance the economic vitality in Seguin, Texas. The primary goal of the SEDC is to attract and retain businesses, facilitate job creation, and stimulate
overall economic prosperity in the community.

According the press release issued on the project, the company is made up of a team of dedicated real estate professionals whose main goal is to provide the highest level of service possible to our clients. Collett team members work together to serve our clients in the areas of development, leasing, property management, strategic asset management, investment sales and brokerage.
The Alexander Family is well known in Seguin. Its presence here began in 1980 with the purchase of the Gulf Oil Distributorship. They say recognizing the strategic location of Seguin for future growth, property was acquired along Interstate 10 and SH123 Bypass. Initially constructing a new office for Alexander Oil Company and adding Jud’s Food Stores on the property was the start of attracting new businesses to Seguin. Over the years, the family has also developed other projects, includnig the Ranch at SH 123 Apartments. the development includes two restaurants, four hotels, two coffee offerings and The Ranch at SH123 Apartments. The family stated it is very pleased to have partnered with Collett & Associates to bring a new retail development to the city of Seguin.

Lady Mats win battle for first place with Edison
(Seguin) -- The Seguin Lady Matadors won a battle for first place in District 27-5A with a straight sets victory over San Antonio Edison on Tuesday night at Goldie Harris Gym.
The Lady Mats took the sweep, 25-15, 25-19, 25-14. Seguin has not lost a set this month. The Lady Mats have swept all of their five district matches so far this season.
Five Lady Matadors had double digit digs led by senior Karina Lerma with 19. Senior Ayla Arcos had 16 digs, sophomore Britlyn Walls came up with 13, junior Gisele Morales had 12 and sophomore Danica Rushlow had 10 digs.
In the kill department, the Lady Matadors were led by Lerma who punched through 16 kills. Sophomore Ellie Anderson added 12 kills while fellow sophomore Rebeka Wilke joined Lerma and Anderson in double digit kills with 10. Morales set up her hitters with 38 assists on the night.
Seguin was helped by their depth late in the match from sophomore Mia Hernandez. Hernandez found open spots on the Edison side of the court to bury a couple of kills and secure the sweep.
Seguin head coach Ashley Farris talked about her hitters Hernandez, Anderson, Lerma and Wilke after the victory.
“Mia definitely stepped up and got some good kills,” Farris said. “It’s hard, she’s next to Ellie (Anderson) and our middles are our goto kids, everybody knows it. And obviously we have Karina (Lerma) set up outside. Rebeka Wilke had a good night. She had a heck of a practice today and we kinda knew she was gonna be on fire.
“And we had five girls in double digits in digs. To me, that’s a very good night because I’m a big believer that defense wins championships. So, we gotta continue to be scrappy like that and it’s gonna do us a lot of good in the future”
Seguin is now 5-0 in District 27-5A and tied with San Antonio Burbank atop the district. The Lady Bears fell to 4-1.
The Lady Mats will host San Antonio Highlands on Friday. The Lady Owls are 5-1 in district play. The match will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Goldie Harris prior to Friday night’s homecoming football game.
(Universal City) -- The Navarro Lady Panthers picked up a non-district win on Tuesday night over Universal City Randolph.
The Lady Panthers dropped the Lady Ro-Hawks in four sets, winning 25-13, 25-13, 19-25, 25-14. Navarro is now 21-11 on the season and will host Lackland Stacey on Friday.

Malcolm Emil Hoffman was born in the family farmhouse in Maxwell, Texas on March 28, 1928, to Ella (Hummel) and Oscar Emil Hoffman. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family members on September 2, 2024 in Marlton, New Jersey at the age of 96.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ella and Oscar Emil Hoffman, his son, John Hoffman, and wife, JoAnn Spenrath Hoffman.
Malcolm is survived by his 2nd wife, Marge Jarvis Hoffman; sister, Joyce Boggan Hagedorn; children, Grace Mueller (John), Paul Hoffman (Jennifer), Jim Hoffman ( Li); daughter in law, Madeline Hoffman. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Chris Mueller (Karly); Jennifer Mueller; Alex Hoffman; Jason Hoffman; Hannah Hoffman; and Lizzy Womack-Hoffman (Reed). Malcolm also had two beloved great grandchildren, Mollie and Annabelle Mueller. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Malcolm also fell in love with his bonus Jarvis family: children; Don Jarvis(Jeanette); Janet Ambrose(Jim); Mark Jarvis(Ardra); grandchildren: Rick Jarvis(Amber),Jeff Jarvis, Will Jarvis, Matthew Jarvis, Michael Jarvis, Josh Ambrose, Jeremy Ambrose, Kyra Jarvis, Marissa Jarvis, Josiah Jarvis, Tabitha Jarvis, Jeremiah Jarvis, Micaiah Jarvis; great grandchildren: Chase Jarvis, Logan Jarvis, Elias Jarvis, Lauralei Jarvis, Dylan Jarvis, Jackson Jarvis, Emmett Jarvis.
Malcolm graduated from Lockhart High School and Texas Lutheran College. He was then called into ministry and attended Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio completing his master’s in divinity. In later years he did residency in Clinical Pastoral Education, becoming a Board Certified Chaplain.
During his internship at Highland Park Lutheran Church in San Antonio, he met JoAnn Spenrath. They fell in love and got married on June16, 1952. Malcolm was ordained on June 20, 1954, at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Maxwell, Texas. He had also been baptized and confirmed there. His calling to serve God as a pastor started in Wilson, Texas at St. John Lutheran Church. He then became pastor at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepard in San Antonio. His third church calling was
McKnight
Christ the King Lutheran Church in Kenner (suburb of New Orleans), Louisiana. At this time, he has a family of 6. The culture of New Orleans was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Malcolm was then called back to San Antonio to Zion Lutheran Church on Cincinnati St. It was here that he realized his gift of listening and counseling which led him to become a chaplain. He served as the chaplain of pastoral care at a brand new hospital, St. Luke’s Lutheran Hospital in San Antonio. Malcolm later served as the Director of Chaplaincy Services for Lutheran Social Services of the South.
After retirement, he and JoAnn sold their home and did full time “RVing” for several years. They then settled in Seguin. JoAnn succumbed to cancer that she battled for many years. Malcolm was a charter member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church. He took much joy in helping build this ministry. He was also a member of the Retired Pastors Breakfast Club, the Whataburger
Breakfast Club, and the Saturday Su Casa Breakfast Club. He continued toserve the South West Texas Synod in many roles.
In 2010 Malcolm was blessed with the love of Marge Jarvis. He was smitten! They married on May 12, 2018, and had an extraordinarily close relationship for 6 beautiful years. They had adventures that spanned from Alaska to Texas. Their days were filled with devotions, discussions, family, and just holding each other’s hands.
Malcolm’s gentle nature and wisdom, infectious smile, and uncanny humor will cause many to shed a tear with a smile from a memory of him for years to come.
Malcolm’s celebration of life will be held on September 21, 2024 at 10:30 am at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, 416 Dolle Avenue, Seguin, Texas, with a light lunch to follow. Joyce Marie Warncke, age 88 of Seguin, Texas died peacefully surrounded by loving family members on September 12, 2024, at The Blake Assisted Living Facility in New Braunfels, Texas.
She was born October 23, 1935, in Stockdale, Texas, daughter of John and Ida Mae Sells. She was married to Glennwood E. Warncke for 71 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother that loved her children and her pets.
She is preceded in death by her husband Glennwood Warncke, her parents, sister and brother-in-law. She is survived by her 4 children and their spouses, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their gratitude to New Braunfels Hope Hospice, and numerous caregivers.

Kolb
Helen Marie Tiemann Kolb was born in November of 1931 to her loving parents William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann on their family farm three miles east of downtown Seguin, Texas. She passed away on September 13, 2024 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 92. She will be truly missed by those she loved but left behind a lifetime of happy memories.
As a child, Helen attended Tiemann School, a small one-room school that Theodore Tiemann, her grandfather, started and donated the land for. She would walk to the school from their family farmhouse. Her father farmed the family land around the farmhouse and school. As a young girl, Helen witnessed the beginning of World War II as the skies above their farm filled with trainer aircraft circling the Tiemann farm after the Army Air Corps built a runway less than a mile from their farmhouse – now Randolph Auxiliary Field. She had two older brothers, Rev. Dr. William Harold Tiemann who became a Presbyterian Minister and Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann, an accomplished pharmacist. By example, her parents instilled traditional hard-working principles and taught them love of God and love of neighbor.
A talented soprano, Helen grew up singing at every opportunity, serving God with her voice for decades at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. While attending Texas Lutheran College, and singing professionally part-time, Helen sang at an event on Randolph Air Force Base, where she met and soon thereafter married her husband of forty-nine years, Maj. Maynard Kolb. They had three children and served a full Air Force career living in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California before returning to Seguin. During that career, Helen and her children were blessed to spend quality time with her family at the Tiemann farm in Seguin while her husband was deployed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned home and Helen became actively involved in the Guadalupe County community.
Over the years, Helen proudly wore many hats – she had many hobbies and constantly volunteered her time to local organizations. To name a few, she was a realtor, law office assistant to her son - Judge Kevin Kolb, a Guadalupe County Master Gardner, a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, member of the Guadalupe County Republican Women, member of the Conservation Society, member of the Delphians Study Club, Daughter of the Republic of Texas, vocalist, and active volunteer in many roles at St. James Catholic Church. She will be most fondly remembered though for the things that brought her the most joy in life – being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
As an amateur genealogist, she proudly kept great records of her family tree and Texas-German heritage. She loved to share stories passed down through
Georgia (Bartosh) Barber, passed away on September 15, 2024, in Victoria, TX at the age of 97. Born in 1927 on a farm west of Granger, TX to Mary Millie Kaderka and Lad Joseph Bartosh. She attended parochial school and graduated from Granger High School in May 1945.
Georgia married Jerry Lester Barber in June 1945 who preceded her in death in 1989.
She is survived by three daughters, Jeri Gail Skrondahl and husband David Skrondahl of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jill Marie Chumchal and husband Gary Chumchal of Victoria, TX, and Julie Anne Chidester of Irving, TX.
Georgia is also survived by granddaughter Heather Marie Tobias and
generations about the struggles and the early years of German settlers to our area. Her direct ancestors included some of the first settlers of both Seguin and New Braunfels, as well as important community leaders such as her greatgreat grandfather, Tobias Meiniger – an early Texan-German architect and entrepreneur who designed various Seguin landmark buildings, including the historic landmark Sebastapool, and co-owned a stagecoach company that transported settlers from the port of Indianolia to Seguin, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.
Helen was a devout Roman Catholic and served St. James Church in any way she could – she was the first person to deliver Holy Communion away from Mass to patients at Guadalupe Valley Hospital and loved doing so weekly for many years. She also was a vocalist and song leader and is remembered by many for her beautiful solos of songs like her rendition of Ave Maria, which she sang for many years at Christmas Midnight Mass.
Her family will most fondly remember her for the joy, love, care, and support she gave them throughout the years. Known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, a day never went by without her showing them love in some way. She attended every major event in their lives with, as she loved to say, “bells on.” She made Christmases magical and tough times bearable for everyone she loved.

Daughter – and primary caregiver for the last twelve years, Margaret “Margie” H. Traeger and husband John A. “Drew” Traeger Jr., their two sons: John “Andrew” A. Traeger III, spouse Megan M. Traeger, and daughters Ryan Grace Traeger and Reagan Margaret Traeger; and Steven M. Traeger, spouse Kaitlyn V. Traeger, and daughter Adeline Marie Traeger, all of New Braunfels, TX.
Daughter – Helynne “Lynn” Mary Starcke, spouse Hilmar Starcke, three children, Christopher L. Lawrence, Michael Lawrence, Michelle Van Overloop, and husband John Van Overloop.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels, Texas on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 10 a.m. A reception will follow next door in St. Mary’s Hall. 39-Million People Could Die Worldwide By 2050 Due To Antimicrobial Resistance
(London, UK) -- A new study warns that 39-million people could die worldwide by 2050 due to antimicrobial resistance. We’re talking about superbugs that don’t respond to antibiotics because they’ve been used so much including for colds or other viruses. Antibiotics are designed to fight bacteria, things like pneumonia, sepsis and life-threatening fungal infections. But according to a major study just published in the British medical journal Lancet, antimicrobial deaths are skyrocketing in the more than two-hundred countries studied, up 80-percent in the past 30 years among people 70 and older. Experts say there’s an urgent need for new antibiotics and for less use in livestock and food production.

Meta Plans To Force Teens Into Protected Instagram Accounts
(Menlo Park, CA) -- Meta plans to force teens into protected Instagram accounts. This is in response to ramped up pressure on Meta to do more to protect adolescents’ mental health and well-being. So, Instagram will implement new settings in the next 60 days to all teen accounts in the U.S., Canada, the UK and Australia which will automatically make those accounts private and restrict what kind of content they can see. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been accused in lawsuits of failing to shield teen users from predators and from bullying that’s led to suicides.
Maine Lawmakers Want Answers About Big Spill
(Brunswick, ME) -- Maine lawmakers are now calling for answers following a massive spill of toxic chemicals in Brunswick. They’re pressing leaders at Brunswick Executive Airport about what led up to the accidental discharge of thousands of gallons of firefighting foam back in August. Some of the chemicals have already made it into that community’s water supply and concerns are growing about the possible impacts on public health. The Navy is being asked to step in and help clean up any remaining mess.

The City of Seguin will have changes to its Trash Service beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. The four key changes are: Carts must be out by 6 a.m., all items must be in carts, there will now be quarterly bulky item pick-up, and you will need vouchers for extra bulk items.
