St. James Catholic Church gears up for two day Fall Family Festival Handcrafted outdoor bar up for bid during live auction Saturday's live music will include DJ-Marcus Demel Youngville.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- St. James Catholic Church is inviting local families to its annual Fall Family Festival. The two day festival is set for Saturday and Sunday at the Seguin Coliseum. Linda Kay, who serves as a co-festival committee chairman with her husband Augie, says the fun begins Saturday afternoon with a fun filled schedule.
This outdoor bar can be yours for the right bid at this year’s St. James Catholic Church Fall Family Festival. The hand crafted bar is set to be among the top prizes in this years live auction scheduled for Sunday at the Seguin Coliseum.
"On Saturday, we will start with mass at 4 o'clock and then following mass, there will be some entertainment from our high school's mariachis and then also from Ballet Folklorico De La Rosa and then after they finish, we will have music and we will have game booths and we will have food booths for everyone to enjoy," said Kay.
The schedule on Sunday begins a little earlier. Kay says families are invited out to start their day with a catered meal and an afternoon of fun. "Sunday, we start at 11 and we will have a meal that starts at 12 and that will be barbecue chicken by the KCs and potato salad, green beans, coleslaw and a tea or coffee whichever you prefer. We'll also have Rio playing for us on Sunday and that will be all day," said Kay. The KC barbecue plates are $10 each and will include a half chicken with all the trimmings. Tickets will be available at the door. Also, providing entertainment on Sunday
will be band Hard Cover. Other scheduled events throughout both days include gift basket raffles, a country store, bingo and food booths. Kay says this year's schedule has also been split up so kids and families who attend Saturday will have even more reason to return on Sunday. "There will also be the game booths for the kids and on Saturday, we'll have the bouncy castle, wet slide and a maze for the kids to enjoy and on Sunday, we'll also have a petting zoo and pony rides and train ride that also happens on that day for the kiddos," said Kay. Free food truck festival returns to Seguin this Saturday By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Brunch, lunch and dinner is again on the menu for the 5th Bi-Annual Hermann Sons Food Truck Festival. Food trucks will again be rolling into town this Saturday for the local fundraiser. The festival which also includes vendors, live music and kid's activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the Hermann Sons Life (Hall) parking lot.
Paul Gescheidle, one of the coordinators of the event and lifetime member of the organization, says he's excited that this year's festival has confirmed six food trucks. He says the food trucks are all ready to serve some of the best food in the business. "So far, we have Dona Kika's Tacos & Gorditas which is another tried and true returning champion. We have a new truck, Dave's Chilitown, which everything on the menu is chili related. We have Mister Softee's ice cream with their Sabrett hot dogs. We have

Pair of POW/MIA ceremonies scheduled for today By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- America's prisoners of war and those missing in action will not be forgotten today. In fact, there will not only be one but two opportunities this year to remember and honor them on this National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The first opportunity will be this Friday morning at the Manuel Castilla Park. The American GI Forum of Seguin is inviting the community to help kick off the day with a special flag raising ceremony. GI Forum members say since World War II, there remains over 200,000 military personnel still unaccounted for. The ceremony gets underway at 9 a.m. at the park located at 2261 N.

Organizers says each third Friday of the month of September is designated as POW/MIA Day. Tonight, veterans and the community will gather for its annual solemn ceremony to remember each and everyone of those who have yet to return home. The ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. today in the Geronimo VFW Post located at 6808 N. State Highway 123.
Fall Festival to feature car show, petting zoo plus more the item will draw plenty of attention at this year’s event.
ST. JAMES, continued from page 2 The St. James Brew Crew has also been hard at work constructing this year's top festival prize. Church volunteer Danny Castillo says the group of church men will again be presenting a hand crafted outdoor patio/bar as this year's top prize for the live auction. "We are all part of the church. It's grown to about 15 of us. We call ourselves the Brew Crew. We've been building I guess, we are like in our ninth year now, where we pretty much build a project and after we build it, we share the cost of the build within the members and then we donate it to the actual church and the church in turn will either auction it off or put it as a raffle item in the auction for the Fall Festival,” said Castillo. He says these past two years, the prize has been raffled off but a late start on the project this year has caused them to place the item on the auction block. But no matter what avenue they take to put the outdoor bar into the hands of a lucky person, they know

"This is set up for outdoor use, somebody who likes to spend time outside maybe hanging out with the family, barbecuing, watching the game. This patio - the dimensions on it are about 8 foot by 12 foot with two long 12 foot bars on each side. It's got two fans in the inside to keep you cool, wall mounted fans and like a 32 inch TV that is set up in there. It's got an HDTV antenna on it so you can watch games out there. Our electrician set it up like we've done all our other projects where you pretty much run an extension cord to it and you can power up the whole patio with just one extension cord and it powers up the electrical outlets, fans, TV -- you name it. It's got some real nice lights, outdoor patio/party lights and they are LED. It's very nice," said Castillo. The live auction will get underway during the noon hour on Sunday. It will be followed by the closing of the silent auction at 3 p.m. The church is also looking to raffle off 50 gift cards.

use our lodge when we are not using is for our meetings and our gatherings for our own. That also being said, you'll notice the outside areas look a little bit nicer in the back. You'll see a grill under our covered pavilion. That grill can actually be utilized for events as well so if people wanted to rent out our entire lodge and use that grill for a barbecue plate sale or a barbecue fundraiser -- things of that nature -- we have that too and you'll be able to see that as you walk right outside. We've been able to put the money to good use to where not only have we've been able to pay off our debts but now, the attendees both new and old can come in and see the fruits of our labor," said Gescheidle.
Gescheidle says this year's event will be even more family friendly with the addition of several new activities for local kids. "We will have a petting zoo with a camel. We'll have a train ride for kids and a bounce house and so the bounce house, the family will be able to buy a wristband for their kids and sign a release form and they'll be able to do that at the bar where they will be able to get their beer or where they can buy raffle tickets as well. The petting zoo is also going to only be a $5 admission charge and the train ride as well," said Gescheidle. Gescheidle says thanks to local businesses, this year's event will also offer up some great prizes for its annual raffle. He says adding to that prize list will be each participating vendor. "Now the raffle is what I really want to focus on. It's what I really want everyone to know about. We are keeping those tickets at $1 price each or six for $5 but our biggest breakthrough of what really kind of warmed everyone's heart in this is we had a donation given (by) the William Luxury Hotel in Boerne valued at $1,000 and that's a two night stay for two people. That's

the biggest donation that we've ever (been) given and so for the couple that does win that, you'll get a stay-cation in another county but you are not going to go too far away. You'll feel like you'll get away but I guarantee you the luxury level that you will be provided with at the William is going to pay off overall,' said Gescheidle. Gescheidle began this fundraiser three years ago as a means to help raise money for the upkeep and renovation of the current lodge located at 2918 W. Kingsbury St. He says the Seguin Herman Son's Hall
is part of a fraternal benefit (insurance) community/society. He says because of the success of the food truck festival these last four times, folks this weekend will notice a big difference at the lodge and it will all be because of their support. "What you will be able to notice right off the bat when you walk into the building of this event is our entire lodge has a facelift. The inside of the building is no longer green. It's white and brown. It's modern colors which is going to be more appealing for hall rentals, for all of the events that we

Matadors chase first win in 5 p.m. district opener vs. Austin-Northeast, Friday's game to air on KWED (Austin) - Something has to give in Friday's District 12-5A-Division I opener at Nelson Field when Seguin visits Austin-Northeast in a matchup of 0-3 teams.
Northeast has only managed 207 yards of total offense in three games, but Bush warns that their physical tools have to be respected more than those numbers might suggest.
The numbers show that Matador fans have more reason for optimism than supporters of the Northeast Early College Raiders.
"They're really scary, because they're going to have a lot of size," Bush said. "You're going to see some big guys out there on both lines. They've got some speed. I like the quarterback. The quarterback (David) Rivera plays well. You don't know. They're just scary. You're afraid that any night could be the night that they put it all together, but they have not put it together well yet. Tonight's going to be about us, and how good can we be, and it's going to be about our execution."
While Seguin has struggled defensively in giving up 46 points anid 523 yards per game, the offense has shown flashes of brilliance in losses to Antonian, New Braunfels, and Central Catholic. The Matadors average 30 points and 458 total yards per outing in Travis Bush's fourth season as head coach, and junior Marques Washington has been one of the most prolific running-backs in the region. Washington enters Friday with 561 rushing yards (8 per carry) and seven touchdowns after piling up a career-high 268 and four scores in last week's 51-43 setback to Central Catholic. Junior quarterback Micah Rodriguez has filled in admirably for injured starter Jhalen Mickles, totaling 452 passing yards and three touchdowns against two interceptions. Dravan McKnight (19 rec., 230 yds., TD) and Clark Ullrich (16 rec., 167 yds., TD) have been reliable targets in the passing game. A.J. Mustafa's Raiders take no such statistical building blocks into district play. Northeast has been outscored by a combined total of 132-7 in losses to Cedar Creek (47-0), Bastrop (24-0), and Georgetown-East View (61-7).
Kawaski Latham has been the Raiders' most productive player, rushing for 134 yards on 16 carries and the team's only touchdown. Seguin's defensive leaders include linebacker John Michael Mata (35 tackles, INT), defensive end Ian Box (8 TFL, 1 sack), and Dillion Gutierrez (INT ret. for TD). Because Seguin and Northeast are playing the first of two scheduled Friday night games at Austin ISD's Nelson Field, the Matadors and Raiders will kick off at 5 p.m.

Navarro battles La Grange in matchup of 3-0 programs (La Grange) - The Navarro Panthers hit the road for the second straight Friday to put their own 3-0 record on the line against that of the La Grange Leopards in a rematch of a game that was cut short by extended lightning delays in 2018.
Navarro looks to keep those explosive players on the sideline with its ball-control Slot-T attack against a Leopards defense that Blount identifies as the most talented his group has faced to this point.
La Grange jumped out to a 14-0 lead over Navarro at Erwin-Lee Field in last year's Week 4 clash, but the unyielding weather threat forced the teams to cancel the remainder of the game and declare it no contest.
"We've got to start out taking care of the guys up front - that's the most explosive defensive line we've seen in quite awhile," Blount said. "They're very fast off the football, aggressive, do a great job of squeezing and reading their keys, so we've got to take care of those front guys, get the linebackers, and just kind of grind out the clock a little bit."
Matt Kates' Leopards have defeated Fulshear 2813, Columbus 24-21, and La Vernia 43-39 to keep their 2019 record unblemished. The Panthers have started Rod Blount's second season with a 17-16 squeaker over Gonzales, a 55-15 blowout of Marion, and a 33-7 thumping of Marble Falls. The La Grange backfield tandem of Matthew Johnson (351 yds., 2 TD) and D.J. Taylor (223 yds, 3 TD) has sparked the Leopards to an average of 236.7 rushing yards per outing, and Caden Cooper has completed four touchdown passes to keep defenses honest.
The Panthers have averaged 443.7 rushing yards per game and nine per carry, with senior fullback Euler Deleon leading the way. Deleon has churned out a staggering 15 yards per rushing attempt, totaling 503 yards and seven scores on just 33 carries. Seven other Navarro players have scored at least once. Nick Billings and Mark Wozniak have each coralled interceptions. Friday's kickoff in La Grange is set for 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Blount can be heard between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m. during the Panther Report on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Marion looks to snap slide in home date with Hondo (Marion) - The Marion Bulldogs hope to end a string of two consecutive losses in their final non-district game Friday when the Hondo Owls come calling at Veterans Stadium. Marion kick off Ryne Miller's second season as head coach with a 29-13 win over Luling in Week 1, but stumbled against Navarro in a 5515 setback the following week and saw a 217 halftime lead slip away in a 36-35 overtime thriller against Blanco last Friday. The Bulldogs attempt their U-turn against a 12 Hondo squad that dropped its opener to Llano 33-0, bounced back with a 27-12 win over Lytle, and came up short to Class-5A Medina Valley 41-14 last week. Brett Ratliff's Owls have leaned on mobile quarterback Brandon J. Garcia (513 total yds., 4 TD, 3 Int.) and 6'0, 200 lb. running-back Trey Dickens (277 yds., 8.1 per carry, 2 TD) for the bulk of their offensive production, but from a different mode of attack than what Marion's defense has faced in previous weeks. "It's kind of nice to see a little spread team for once, after about four or five weeks of seeing
Slot-T, Wing-T," Miller noted. "Those guys will spread it out a little bit, but they'll still run I-formation and things like that. I think our guys, putting themselves in a different situation that they're going to see a little more in district, just having a great game plan going into it, and putting our guys in the right spot." Senior quarterback Zach Goodwin leads Marion with 641 yards and five touchdowns through the air to go with 89 yards and a score on the ground heading into Friday. Jayden Williams (14 rec., 265 yds), Jacob Devora (12 rec., 131 yds., TD), Samuel Montoya (4 rec. 119 yds, TD), and Hutch Rabenaldt (2 TD) have given Goodwin a versatile group of targets. The Bulldogs look to ramp up the running game against Hondo after producing just 59.3 yards per game and 2.2 per carry over the first three games. Friday's kickoff at Veterans Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. A complete interview with Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. between 4:00 and 4:30 p.m.
Lifegate meets Granbury-North Central Texas Academy in neutral site game (Temple) - Lifegate pursues its third straight win of the six-man football season Friday when the Falcons meet Granbury-North Central Texas Academy at Mean Joe Green Field in Temple.
Stout attributes some of the North Central Texas offensive struggles to a tough schedule, and says the Lifegate defense will have to be prepared to face a capable opponent.
The Falcons are 2-1 in John Stout's first season as head coach and riding a two-game shutout streak after mercy ruling Corpus Christi-Annapolis 50-0 on the road last Friday.
"The key matchups are, they've got three players that are pretty good," Stout said. "They've got some speed. We've just got to contain them, and we've got to sheep-dog them on the outside. Just make sure that they don't get to the outside, and make sure we cover up the inside also. The ends have got to block off the outside run and turn it back inside, and as long as we do that, I think we'll be fine."
North Central Texas dropped to 0-3 with a 46-15 loss to WacoParkview Christian. The Pioneers fell to Coolidge 55-20 and Zephyr 54-0 in their first two games.

Study Says Teen Vaping has Doubled (Ann Arbor, MI) -- Teen vaping has doubled in the past two years. A study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at data from over 42-thousand students in the 8th, 10th and 12th grades. The researchers at the University of Michigan found "significant increases" in the number of young people using e-cigarettes. Between 2017 and 2019, they found, rates of vaping more than doubled in each of the three grades. The lead author of the study says parents with school-aged children should begin paying close attention to these devices, which can look like simple flash drives and frequently come in flavors that are appealing to youth.
Media Companies To Stop Running E-Cigarettes Ads (New York, NY) -- Major media companies are dropping ads for e-cigarettes over health concerns.
CBS and WarnerMedia have announced that their networks will no longer run commercials from vaping companies, including Juul [[ JOOL ]]. CNN, which is owned by WarnerMedia, announced recently that it wouldn't show ads for e-cigarette products, but now other WarnerMedia channels like TNT and TBS won't carry them either. Health concerns about vaping have been raised in recent weeks after reports of a surge in lung illnesses linked to e-cigarettes.
New Guidelines Released On Sugary Drinks For Kids Under 5 (Minneapolis, MN) -- The first-ever guidelines are out on what young children should drink and it takes aim at sugar. Healthy Eating Research unveiled the list of beverages from birth to the age of five. They say infants need only breast milk or formula until six months of age and then small amounts of water are okay. The guidelines say kids under one shouldn't drink juice, but between the age of one and three, half a cup a day is fine. Kids four to five years old shouldn't be drinking more than three quarters of a cup of juice a day.
