Texas High School Bands to takeover Matador Stadium
Seguin Marching Festival set for this Saturday
(Seguin) – The Seguin Marching Festival returns to Matador Stadium this Homecoming weekend. The Seguin Matador Band will host 15 bands from across the state this Saturday.
Marc Telles, Seguin ISD director of fine arts, says this marks the 6th year in which bands of all divisions come to compete and hopefully take back some constructive criticism.
“It does several things. It allows groups from all over the area mostly Central Texas, San Antonio but we’ve had groups as far as Houston and they come in and these bands get to perform for world class judges that are music educators, high level music educators that can provide feedback to them. So, they get an opportunity to perform for their
community, perform for the students and they also get feedback that they can use to make their programs better as they progress through the season leading into UIL and any advancement that comes with UIL,” said Telles.
In fact, it’s been this band festival that over the years has encouraged the changes in format for other contests throughout the area. He says it’s all about preparing bands for their upcoming season.
“We are doing a prelims finals format so all
of the different groups get to perform. We are talking Class 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A. They perform prelims. They get awards from prelims in their classification and then we take the top eight groups and they perform in finals against each other. So 5A gets to compete against 6A and 3A and 4A and although you may assume there is a disadvantage, sometimes our smaller schools end up doing really really well and surpassing some of those larger schools so it kind of gives them an opportunity to compete within their class and then get an opportunity to perform again for a second time which is what they see when they compete at area and state marching contests, “ said Telles.

A day of connection between local artisans and the Seguin community
Takeover, continued.
High schools scheduled to perform include Flatonia, Tom Moore, Natalia, Taylor, La Vernia, McCollum, Southwest, Lockhart, Cedar Creek, Medina Valley, Harlandale, Del Valle, San Marcos, New Braunfels and John Paul Stevens.
Although the Mighty Matador Band will not be competing in the festival, Telles says it will still take the field at the end of the event.
“Our students at the very end will follow a format as if we are competing even though we are not and we will perform at the very end. We have a 9 o’clock performance to be able to perform for our community and we do get feedback from our judges even though we are not necessarily competing head to head,” said Telles.
In past years, the day-long marching festival has reportedly brought in 8,000 people if not more to Seguin.
Telles says the contest is a win-win for everyone involved.
“We are just excited to be able to have all of these groups here. it does a lot not only for our program but for the community. These groups will go and eat at various restaurants and they really bring in people to Seguin and revenue to our community and we are excited to be able to perform at the very end. We have a really exciting show and we are looking forward to bringing in a very competitive environment this Saturday,” said Telles.
Taking the field first will be Flatonia High School at noon. The prelims format will follow every 15 minutes and will wrap up with the final performance at 4:30 p.m. That will be followed with the start of finals at 6:45 p.m.
Following the performance by Seguin High School at 9 p.m. will be the presentation of awards at 9:15 p.m.

Navarro football takes to the road while Marion and Seguin play in front of homecoming crowds Friday
(Giddings) -- The Navarro Panthers wrap up their tough non-district schedule with a road trip to Giddings on Friday.
Navarro is 2-2 in non-district with losses to state powers Cuero and La Vernia. They’ve earned blowout wins over stout Navasota and Smithville teams.
The Buffaloes are 1-3 on the season. They’ve also had a tough non-district slate with losses to Columbus, Lago Vista and Burnet and a win over Jarrell.
Panther head coach Rod Blount says the Buffaloes are better than their record indicates.
“They’re very explosive. They have a sophomore running back who’s been putting up big numbers this year. He’s had big runs against everybody,” Blount said. “They’re a traditional power. They have a hard time finding games and everybody that they’ve played is solid. So, their record doesn’t dictate how good of a football team they are and the talent that they have.
“Their offensive line is big and they do a great job. They are probably one of the better moving offensive lines that we’ve seen. They’ll get on guys running that zone. They’ll doubleteam well in combo and come off linebackers.
It makes it tough on your defense. They have to stay home and be disciplined and read their keys and make tackles because if you miss on this back, he’ll take it all the way.”
Navarro will start their District 13-4A schedule on October 6th at home against Lago Vista. This Friday night’s game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Giddings Buffalo Stadium. We’ll talk more with coach Blount during the Navarro Panther report Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. on AM 1580 KWED and streaming at SeguinToday. com.
(Marion) -- Homecoming week caps Friday night in Marion as the Marion Bulldog football team hosts their rivals down the road, the Randolph Ro-Hawks.
The match-up is the first District 13-3A game for both teams this season. Randolph went unbeaten in non-district finishing with a 51-0 shutout of San Antonio Kennedy last week. The Bulldogs are coming off a 21-3 win at Karnes City last Friday to wrap up non-district at 2-2.
Marion head coach Ryne Miller feels his team is ready for the district season which starts with homecoming.
“Last week, we talked about peaking at the right time. And in order for us to peak, we gotta get guys healthy. We gotta have a good week at practice. And we’ve done that so far,” Miller said. “So, we got some guys back this week and we’re working all the kinks out.
“We installed a new offense in August. Defense is really clicking right now and special teams is playing extremely well. So, we feel all three phases are peaking going into district and the guys will be ready.”
Friday night’s homecoming game between the Bulldogs and Ro-Hawks has a 7 O’clock kickoff at Veterans Stadium in Marion. We’ll chat more with coach Miller during the Marion Bulldog Report which airs inside of our High School Football Friday night coverage on KWED.
It all begins at 6:45 p.m. with the Navarro Panther Report followed by the Bulldog Report and then we’ll go to Matador Stadium in Seguin for our Matador Pregame show ahead of homecoming in Seguin where we’ll have the Matador Report with head coach Craig Dailey as Seguin hosts San Antonio MacArthur. It all starts at 6:45 p.m. on Friday night on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

Pharma
Corp. Lowers TB Test Price After Public Outcry
(Washington, DC) -- Health and human rights advocates are celebrating after a major pharmaceutical company announced Tuesday that it’s reducing the cost of one of its tuberculosis tests by 20 percent. It’s a decision that will likely save thousands of lives in developing nations. Pharma multinational Danaher [[ DAN-a-hur ]] produces and sells the tests, and has faced criticism from organizations like Doctors Without Borders for its aggressive pricing model. Although TB has been curable for 70 years, one-point-six million people still die of the infection worldwide every year. Best-selling author and philanthropist John Green was part of the recent organized push; he says there’s work still to be done before the world is rid of its deadliest preventable disease. Green and other advocates are speaking at the United Nations Friday when the UN General Assembly holds a second meeting on the fight against tuberculosis.
