Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office committed to keeping people out of the water By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- The work continues this week to keep people out of the water. Taking the lead in ensuring that people adhere to the court order issued last week is the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office. Area hydroelectric lakes were officially closed Thursday as part of a settlement agreement between GBRA and plaintiffs from two separate lawsuits that sought to prevent the river authority from draining the lakes due to concerns about the safety of the dams on each lake. Sheriff Arnold Zwicke says keeping folks out the water is top priority for his office. "I believe that number one with what needs to happen is that everyone needs to stay off that lake. What we are finding is some people who are unaware that -- you are going to have people from out of town (and) those lakes do get used from people and you'll be surprised where they are coming from to come to the Guadalupe River. We are working with TxDOT

and parks and wildlife right now to close the ramp at I-10. That's in the works and has been forwarded up to Austin and we are waiting for that order to be given but number one is educate the public that those lakes are closed," said Zwicke. Not only will the sheriff's office be vigilant in patrolling the water but deputies will be parked at various locations around the lakes. Zwicke says just because you don't see them on the water doesn't mean that there are no eyes in the area. "What we are doing is we will be out and about on the boat traveling from lake to lake as well as patrolling by land looking for anyone that's on that lake to send to get off that lake. We also have a lot of citizens that will be calling us and have been calling us with the concerns. The people want to do the right thing to keep the lakes closed like the judge's court order states," said Zwicke. See LAKE, page 2

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Georgia Hester, chamber membership and events manager, says this year's event will welcome a special motivational speaker who is not only accomplished with the U.S. Army but who will bring people along on her personal journey. "So Sept. 24, we are going to kick off with our social hour and a private meet and greet with Elizabeth McCormick whose our keynote speaker this

year. She is a former Black Hawk (helicopter) pilot and has some books that she'll have for sale-- autographed books after the event but it's just going to be kind of a time before where you can come in and talk with her and also come for the social hour anyways because it's always fun to hang out before the program starts at 7 p.m.," said Hester. The chamber banquet each year not only recognizes the changing of the guard but it also helps honor those volunteers who have made a significant difference in the community. Hester says those wishing to attend are encouraged to get their tickets soon as seating will be limited. "We have tickets at the chamber already. They do increase as the day nears and so if you look online, you'll see that you'll want to get them early and we've got some sponsors already

lined up. Lots of fun things happening and we are excited to welcome the incoming chair Doug Parker," said Hester. As Hester mentioned, the outgoing Chamber Chairwoman, Elaine Bennett, of GRMC Foundation, will be handing over the gavel to incoming Chair-Elect Doug Parker, of Parker's City Pharmacy. The banquet gets underway at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Tickets for the chamber banquet are $40 in advance or $50 at the door. Sponsorship tables are also still available. Tickets can be purchased at the chamber office located at 116 N. Camp St. or online at www.seguinchamber.com.

that is to stay off and out of the water.

Zwicke says right now, warnings are being issued for those ignoring the law. However, he says here soon, those warnings will turn into citations.

"My understanding fishing from the bank will be okay. It's just no bodies touching the water. It's all toes out of the water. You can not be in the water," said Zwicke.

"What the deputies are doing now is whoever they are coming into contact with, they will be giving them a field interview. It's not a warning but a field interview -- we will be tracking who we warned on the lakes and when the ordinance does go into effect, they can't say that they weren't warned," said Zwicke. Again, Zwicke says the court order is simple and

Last week's settlement agreement temporarily halted the draining of the lakes until a trial date. That date is planned for one year from now. The settlement called for the closing of the lakes for the next 30 days. During that time, a panel of three experts will be working to determine what areas, if any, should

If the panel of experts aren't done piecing together their safety surveys by Oct. 19, then there is the potential for the lakes to be closed off to the public for an additional 30 days to ensure the work. Guadalupe County Boat Patrol in full swing at area lakes LAKE, continued from page 3 Zwicke says this extension into the fall has created some shift juggling among his officers. Nonetheless, he says deputies are stepping up and continuing their duties on and around the water. "It's going to create a little bit of overtime. It's also going to create some rearranging of the patrol schedule with the manpower out there but the judge has issued an order and we plan to enforce that," said Zwicke. As of late Friday, an ordinance drafted and forwarded to GBRA by the Guadalupe County Attorney's Office was still under review by GBRA. During the court hearing, the ordinance was said to have been designed with "teeth for

"I would ask the residents from the lakes that are affected that we are all in this together that we need to work forward to a solution. Number one is safety and it's been recommended until we find out what exactly is going on with those dams -- that we keep it closed and keep everyone safe," said Zwicke. When deputies are not responding to a call on the water, Zwicke says the boat and boat truck will remain on standby at the sheriff's office or positioned along an area bank. Zwicke says ignoring to stay off or out of the water is a Class C citation with a fine of up to $500.

Matadors cruise past Northeast in district opener on its final possession of the half, and Rivera found Nick Hernandez in the end zone from 11 yards out for the game's final points in the closing seconds.

(Austin) Seguin boarded the bus at Nelson Field and left Austin with a Week 4 win in the books before most of the high school football teams in Texas had even kicked off Friday night. Micah Rodriguez threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Matadors thrived under the bright sun and blue skies of a 5 p.m. start to throttle Austin-Northeast 44-6 in the District 12-5A-Division I opener for both teams.

The Raiders ran 11 plays, converted two fourth downs, and chewed up more than eight minutes of clock to move the ball 27 yards on the opening drive of the third quarter. Seguin pulled the starters and slowed its offensive tempo as well when the coaches and officials agreed to go to a running clock.

The win was Seguin's first of the season after a tough 0-3 stretch against non-district opponents Antonian, New Braunfels, and Central Catholic. By comparison, Northeast looked like a team running in quicksand as the Matadors jumped out to a 23-0 lead in the first quarter and stretched it to 44-0 before the Raiders broke up the shutout in the waning seconds of the half.

"We kind of got sloppy there at the end, and that's what we talked about," Bush said. "It's important if we get an opportunity in games like this to get those young guys in and get some reps. A lot of guys got their first reps as a varsity player there in the second half, so it looked kind of sloppy there at the end, but again, proud of the way we played."

"It goes back to who we played in non-district, you know, we played at a high level, and we looked a step faster than them on the film on both sides of the ball, and that was the point of doing that," Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. The Mats committed three penalties and ultimately punted on their first possession, but quickly took a 2-0 lead on a safety when Northeast quarterback David Rivera chased a snap over his head and downed it in the end zone with 9:10 to play in the first quarter. Rodriguez scored Seguin's first touchdown on a oneyard quarterback sneak just 27 seconds later after completing a 44-yard pass to Jonathan Patterson, and the first of Garrett Stiles' six PAT kicks pushed the lead to 9-0. A three-yard run by Washington four plays after Dezvonn Smith blocked Rivera's punt and a 50-yard scamper by Dravan McKnight following a short throw from Rodriguez gave the Mats a 23-0 cushion at the end of the first period. Seguin added an eight-yard touchdown run by Washington, a 27yard scoring strike from Rodriguez to Ullrich after a fumble recovery on a kick return, and a 20-yard TD toss from Rodriguez to McKnight to make it 44-0 by the 5:54 mark of the second quarter. The Matadors didn't cover more than 45 yards or run

Rodriguez finished 8-10 passing for 167 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. Washington ran for 46 yards and two scores on just eight carries. McKnight led the receivers with 70 yards on two catches, both touchdowns. Ullrich hauled in two receptions for 39 yards and a score in the first half, and completed two passes in three attempts for 16 yards at quarterback in the second half. The Matadors out-gained Northeast 291 total yards to 82, with 17 first downs to the Raiders' five. The Seguin defense allowed just 14 rushing yards on 27 carries and forced six punts on the night. In the wake of his team's dominant performance, Bush was just as eager to find teachable moments in the game film as he was after the three non-district losses.

Junior quarterback Micah Rodriguez, shown here in an earlier game, threw for three touchdowns and ran for a score Friday in Seguin's win over Austin-Northeast. Photo by Dustin Wyatt. more than five plays on any of their scoring drives.

"We're going to watch it, because we still made some mistakes we can learn from, and hopefully we can get healthy here in the open week, and our goal is to try to get on a roll here after the open week for Homecoming," the coach said.

"The key was the defense," Bush said. "The defense stopping them, getting good field position, and allowing us to get that early lead, and put them away in the first half." Northeast managed to string a three-play, 50-yard drive together
