Neighbors helping Neighbors: TLU Soccer players team up with Rodriguez Elementary School for annual matchup
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The pups were no doubt watching from the sidelines as the Texas Lutheran University Men's Soccer Team defeated JWU-Denver 2-0 this past Sunday in Seguin. That win against Johnson & Wales, however, was not just a win for the Bulldogs but it was also a win for the students at Rodriguez Elementary School.
The students were invited to not only cheer on the players but also work the sidelines -- shagging balls and showing off their own soccer skills -- during the second annual Game for A Cause fundraiser at TLU's Gustafson Field. Ramiro Ramos, the physical education teacher at Rodriguez, says he has worked over the years to coordinate a partnership between his students and members of the TLU soccer team. Ramos says not only are they literally neighbors but

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail A.T.M

Seguin ISD to begin discussion on possible redistricting By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees will begin its discussion on redistricting. Trustees are scheduled to hear a report on the school attendance redistricting process during tonight's meeting. The responsibility in setting school attendance zones falls in the hands of trustees with input from district leaders. District officials say the last time a new set of attendance zones was established for schools was in 2010. They say the new zones aligned with the opening of the Rodriguez Elementary School campus and the Ball Early Childhood Center. After 10 years with the same attendance boundaries and new home construction in progress, the school district is looking at undertaking the process of evaluating current and future enrollment projections at Pre-K to eighth grade campuses. Upon evaluating the current zones, district officials hope to bring forth a recommendation to the school board. That timeframe for a recommendation has not yet been determined. District officials say the process will be conducted with the assistance of a professional demographer as well as a committee of parents and staff representatives from all Pre-K through eighth grade campuses. Trustees tonight are also expected to discuss the Seguin ISD's Emergency Operations and Safety Protocols. District officials say the 86th Texas Legislature recently passed a law requiring school districts to establish a Safety and Security Committee and to "the greatest extent practicable, include certain representatives."They say in addition to the superintendent and the president of the board of trustees, "a member of the district's board of trustees is also required to be a designated member of this committee." SOCCER, continued from page 1 "It's called A Game for A Cause and so we get all of the donations and they bring us soccer balls and we are able to make a community connection with TLU and of course our school. A lot of these students come to our school and they do a reading program with them and then in May, we'll do a soccer camp with them. So (Head) Coach (Eddie) Salazar and myself and also Mrs. (Michelle) Townes -- her son is Cameron Townes who plays on the team -- have all put it together. So, it really has come along. This is our sec-
ond year. Last year, I think we had about 25 kids and this year, we had 60 sign-up. Of course, we maybe had 50 of them show up but it's been real good. It's been a really good experience and the kids really love it," said Ramos. Michelle Townes, whose son was the first to score in the game, was among those who helped organize the effort on behalf of the Bulldogs. She says it was a great way for the parents of the players to also get involved and show their support. "Well my son is a senior this year. We started the Rodriguez Game for A Cause last year. I know the boys had been reading to Rodriguez for several years and so I don't know how it
came about -- I guess we were all talking last year with Coach Eddie and he decided that it would be a great idea. I think that the kids enjoy this but I think these players enjoy it just as much. It goes both ways," said Townes. Ramos, after the game, told the Seguin Daily News that he was appreciative to TLU for rolling out the red carpet -- treating kids with Kona Ice, t-shirts, foam fingers and other goodies during Sunday afternoon's game. "The kids remember it. As of right now, they are getting their trading cards from all the players. We will take a picture here in a little bit and of course, they did tailgating for us and we had drinks and the whole nine yards.
It was really good," said Ramos. More importantly, Ramos says the kids will have something new when they return to class. "When I leave here today, I'll leave with probably about 25 soccer balls. Our goal with the monetary donation is to get soccer goals at our school. We have soccer goals but they are in really bad shape," said Ramos. Rodriguez Elementary School students, again, are expected to learn more about the game from TLU players during an after-school sports camp this coming spring. The free camp is part of a yearlong series of other after-school sports camps and activities offered at the local elementary campus.

for the past 15 years and thatthese additions to the committee are only in response to ensuring that all Texas school districts are in compliance with the new law. The Seguin ISD's
Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) is updated annually in conjunction with the District Safety Committee. The updates this year, again, only reflect new safety related legislation
including threat assessment protocols. The meeting begins today at 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Board Room located inside of Oak Park Mall.

Texas Lutheran bounces back with 31-21 road victory over East Texas Baptist But the Bulldogs were stuffed on the next four plays, and ETBU reeled off two straight scores to tie the game at 14. TLU started its next drive after ETBU's tying touchdown on the TLU 25 with 2:13 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs marched 75 yards in six plays and took 1:58 off the clock to take a 21-14 lead into the half. Freeman capped the drive with a 13-yard TD pass to Mason Perkins, who juggled and then caught the ball between two defenders. "We preach through practice, through the weekend and when we are at the hotel, all we talk about is adversity," said Freeman. "We know we are going to face adversity, and how we are going to overcome it. Coach (Gustafson) talks about how are we going to respond to things, and he liked how we responded today." The Bulldogs received 12 rushes for 80 yards from Chris Monroe, 22 rushes for 68 yards from Ian Leslie, and 67 yards on 14 carries from Austin Mathews.
Texas Lutheran quarterback Wade Freeman was named the American Southwest Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for 208 yards of total offense and four touchdowns Saturday at East Texas Baptist. Photo by Joey Dearing. (Marshall) - After a last-second loss to Hendrix last week, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs bounced back with a 31-21 road victory over East Texas Baptist in the American Southwest Conference opener for both teams.
"It started Monday in film," said Freeman. "We talked about how their defense presses a lot on the receivers, and we wanted to come out and attack their corners, and tell them that they aren't better than us on the presses."
TLU rushed for 273 yards on 60 carries, ran 77 plays, and held the ball for 36 minutes, 49 seconds.
Freeman found Perkins four times for 76 yards, and Romero three times for 57 yards.
The Bulldogs limited All-ASC quarterback Brian Baca to 162 yards passing and no touchdowns. Baca was picked off once. Bulldog quarterback Wade Freeman threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. The sophomore signal-caller completed 10 of his 14 passing attempts for 151 yards and had two TD passes to CJ Romero (43 and seven yards) and one TD strike to Mason Perkins (for 13 yards). Freeman was named the ASC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Tigers.
"Wade, every snap he gets he is growing with confidence," said Carl Gustafson, TLU's head coach. "Obviously, you see the talent. He can really make things happen with his feet. But he can throw the ball well too. He is really doing a good job. I am really proud of him. The supporting cast around him played solid as well. His receivers came up with some huge catches at big times." Freeman rushed 12 times for 58 yards and had a long of 18, on the play that essentially sealed the win for TLU. The 18-yarder came on a 4thand-13 from the ETBU 34 with 4:04 to play in the game.
The Bulldogs initially looked as if they were committed to a punt on fourth down, but the team called timeout. Freeman and the offense emerged from the timeout and took the field. "During the timeout, (Offensive Coordinator Neal) La Hue was talking to our head coach," said Freeman. "Coach La Hue was talking all week about when it is fourth and long distance to get to the pylon, (ETBU) mans up and leaves nobody there for the quarterback. He just knew that I was going to be able to pick it up with my feet." Freeman's rush took the ball down to the ETBU 16. TLU ran out the clock with five consecutive rushing plays from Ian Leslie that took the ball down to the ETBU 3. TLU jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the fourth quarter and had four chances inside the 3-yard line to take a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter after a DaKwa Davis interception that took the ball down to the ETBU 3.
A week after committing 14 penalties for 150 yards, TLU committed only three for 17. "I couldn't be more proud of our team," said Gustafson. "The sting of last week, that can go one of two ways. You can crawl in a hole and feel sorry for yourself, or you can learn from it and respond. Obviously, I think our guys did that. It's not really a surprise. I'm really glad that we played well enough to win, but these young men handled it better than the coaches did, I tell you that. They showed up on Tuesday ready to go to work, and we got better, and they got the payday." Davis led TLU in tackles for a second straight week. He had 13 total tackles for a second consecutive game. James Bell and Keyshawn Holman each collected eight tackles. TLU defeated ETBU for a third straight time and for the ninth time in the last 11 meetings. The Bulldogs return to Seguin for next Saturday's 6 p.m. home game with Southwestern University. See MORE SPORTS, Page 5

Pesticides May Have Caused Illnesses At Cuban Embassies (Ottawa, Canada) -- Those mystery illnesses that struck U.S. and Canadian diplomats and staffers in Cuba might not have been diabolical. There was speculation that an attack using sonic weapons of some sort might have been to blame but a new study out of Canada says pesticides may be to blame. Researchers say the hearing loss, vision problems, dizziness and headaches complained about might have been caused by a mosquito spraying campaign. Cuban health authorities launched an intensive effort, starting in 2016, to rid the island nation of mosquitoes that could be carrying the Zika virus.
Study: North American Bird Population Cut In Half (Washington, DC) -- There are three-billion fewer birds in North America than 50 years ago. A
new study by top bird watchers and government agencies says the continent has lost half of its bird population in the past five decades. Georgetown Environment Initiative Director Peter Marra coauthored the study says when something's going wrong with birds, something's going wrong with the environment. He blames habitat loss and the growing use of pesticides that kill insects affecting the entire food chain.
South Korea Joins Calls To Stop Vaping (Seoul, South Korea) -- South Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare is advising the public not to vape. A statement from the ministry says, "The U.S. government is looking into the cause and effect of vaping and severe respiratory illness, and we advise the public to refrain the use of liquid e-cigarettes until the study is completed." So far there are have been no cases of vaping-related illnesses reported in South Korea. The country now joins India, Brazil and Thailand in issuing warnings about the health effects of vaping.
