Almost time for a night out!
Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Sign-up deadline nears for those looking to host National Night Out event
You’ve got two more days to sign-up your neighborhood as an official site on this year’s National Night Out party list for the city of Seguin.
Coordinating this year’s National Night Out events in Seguin is Stephanie Larrimore, the new community engagement and public information officer for the Seguin Police Department.
Larrimore says Tuesday, Oct. 1 is the annual crime prevention and community building campaign which works to bring neighborhoods together for a fun evening of promoting police-community partnerships.”
“I have had a lot of these people tell me that they’ve enjoyed hosting these parties because of the fact that they
get to meet their neighbors. A lot of the older neighbors will come out and then they get to meet some of their new neighbors. We work a lot of hours. We work 40 plus hours a week. We have kids. We have certain events. So, a lot of times even I just wave at our neighbors and keep driving. At these block parties, people get to know their neighbors and the kids get to play with each other. It’s just a nice environment. It’s a nice way to meet the surrounding people around you and of course, and then your first responders. If you have any other concerns amongst yourselves as people and it needs to be brought to our attention, you can let us know. It’s all about community. It’s all about connecting not only with us but with other members in your community and getting to know each other,” said Larrimore.

Navarro ISD receives prestigious Purple Star designation
(Seguin) -- The Navarro ISD’s commitment to serving military families is not going unnoticed.
The Navarro Independent School District (NISD) is proudly announcing that all four of its campuses have been awarded the esteemed Purple Star Designation by Governor Greg Abbott.
The Purple Star designation is a program established by the Texas Legislature through Senate Bill 1557, with the goal of highlighting schools that go above and beyond to meet the unique needs of these students.
Navarro ISD Superintendent Mandy Epley says this recognition acknowledges the district’s concerted effort of supporting militaryconnected students and their families. She says this latest designation only illustrates the Panther Family’s commitment to taking things a step further in making sure each family member feels supported.
“We want our kids to feel like they are welcome at our schools and they are immediately engaged with friends in a safe environment where they can learn and thrive and grow and so when we saw the opportunity there to really reach out to military families, we figured that we could do a little bit better than we had done in the past and so when we have a student who comes from a military family, we are much more aware of the fact that they may have moved multiple times in their young life and we know the stress that it may cause some of the anxiety about not knowing who am I going to sit with at lunch and what are the activities that I can be involved in at this new school? So, we worked hard to make sure that we identified a liaison at campuses that would be someone who could learn about that student and the family. Some of our folks are military related and so they were eager to offer this support to kids,” said Epley.
Navarro Elementary Principal
Laurel Wilson says “collaboration with our military school liaison has been key to fostering a stronger connection between military families and schools. Ms. Amanda Lindsey works to ensure students receive resources, referrals, and peer support to ensure military students succeed and we are grateful for her dedication.”
Epley says not only did the district dedicate military liaisons who are full time advocates for military connected students, their families and staff on military related issues, but they also offer a web page specifically for military families. She says it’s a transition program that begins on that first day of being at a new school.
“Really, it’s that opportunity to connect a kid right away to someone who will show them around the building, help them understand where they might sit at lunch, get them connected with an afternoon activity and then celebrating those folks who serve our country. It’s such a great service for them to put their life on the line for us and so we, want to celebrate that. We were already doing that with a robust Veterans Day Program but now, we specifically look forward to our Purple Out Days where we raise awareness about military children and how we help
maneuver with them through that challenge of moving and connecting and knowing that sometimes their parents are deployed or are away,” said Epley.
Epley says the fast growth of the district, of course, is keeping the district on its toes when it comes to the various needs of all students who enter the Panther family. Nonetheless, she says the district is ready.
“If fluctuates each year because of our growth. We are adding approximately 250 kids a year so it’s just depends on how they move in and choosing to be here but being so close to different bases – San Antonio being Military City USA, we do anticipate seeing increased numbers and that’s why we really wanted to make sure that our campuses were prepared to meet the unique needs of these students,” said Epley.
Epley says it’s always an honor to assist children of military families with opportunities to excel in their education. She says in the end, its these families who every day make “tremendous sacrifices for our nation.”
Governor Greg Abbott’s announcement this year highlighted a significant increase in Purple Star designations, reflecting the growing awareness of the unique challenges faced by military-connected students.
FIX-IT Façade grant application to be released
Businesses encouraged to apply
Special by Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB director
(Seguin) -- With the start of the City of Seguin’s new fiscal year on October 1, the Seguin Main Street Program is pleased to release a call for applications to its Fix-It Façade grant program.
“The City of Seguin recently approved its 2025 fiscal year budget which included $30,000 for the Seguin Main Street Program’s façade grants which can be used for restorations, repairs, and rehabs of exterior features of downtown properties,” said Kyle Kramm.
The façade grant program has been one of the most successful tools for the redevelopment
Out, continued.
of downtown Seguin.
The grant will reimburse projects up to $10,000 or 50% of project costs.
The project must not be completed prior to submission of the grant application.
The project can be used for a variety of exterior improvements including painting, window repairs, signage, ADA compliance, awnings, and more.
The façade grant application will be released on October 1 and can be found at https:// seguintexas.gov/885/FixIt-Faade-Grant or at the Seguin Main Street Office at 200 South Austin Street.
At the same time Main Street is accepting applications for façade grants, the City and Economic Development are still accepting applications for Business Improvement Grants (BIG). The BIG is similar to the façade grant except it is open city wide and can be used for exterior and interior improvements.
Businesses can apply for both the BIG and Façade grants, but the grants must be used for separate projects. For example, a downtown business could use the façade grant to paint their store front and the BIG program to upgrade their HVAC unit.
Both these grant programs are flexible to allow businesses to use
them to their needs. The BIG program can be found at https://www. seguinedc.com/business/ seguin-big-program
“We hope businesses and property owners take this opportunity to think critically about the needs of their business and use these grants to support their growth and development,” said Kramm. “Supporting our independent businesses, preserving our character, and beautification of the community are all important goals being met by these grants.”
Façade grant applications will be due December 2, 2024 with a review of the grant applications by the Main Street Advisory Board at its December meeting.
Larrimore says to ensure that local registered parties and gatherings receive a visit from emergency personnel, party organizers are encouraged to officially sign up their party by this Tuesday.
“Anybody can do a National Night Out Party. Our thing is we have about 22 block parties so far registered with us and there are just so many officers that can go out there and we try to make all of them. So, as long as I have a list, we are going to make it to those parities and that’s kind of where the deadline comes in to play because I need to relay to fire and to the patrol officers that these are the parties in play, and these are the places I need you to go. It’s kind of hard for me to guarantee that somebody is going to be there and so that’s why there’s that window deadline. I even had a school reach out to me saying that they wanted to have a National Night Out Party on Tuesday as well. They are having a football game and so they wanted to have a party as well,” said Larrimore.
Larrimore says the city for years has worked to encourage National Night Out events throughout the local community. She says whether it’s a large party in the streets or a simple hello to your neighbors, the Seguin PD believes the event is the continued commitment toward keeping our homes, families and properties safe.
“I know a lot of times that when we do respond to
calls, it’s not always in a good situation and so at least in this way, we can get together and have fun and talk and see kids and adults outside these difficult situations and to just communicate in general. If there are any concerns – sometimes people bring things up that aren’t a police matter, but they want to talk to somebody about it and sometimes, we can direct them to who they may be able to talk to. It’s nice for you to get to know us as well instead of seeing us at a traffic stop or seeing us at these calls,” said Larrimore.
Those wishing to register their National Night Out party or gathering are asked to email Officer Larrimore at communityengagement@seguintexas.gov.

VITAL STATISTICS
Helen Marie Tiemann Kolb was born in November of 1931 to her loving parents William Edward Tiemann and Helen Marie Willmann Tiemann on their family farm three miles east of downtown Seguin, Texas. She passed away on September 13, 2024 in New Braunfels, Texas at the age of 92. She will be truly missed by those she loved but left behind a lifetime of happy memories.
As a child, Helen attended Tiemann School, a small one-room school that Theodore Tiemann, her grandfather, started and donated the land for. She would walk to the school from their family farmhouse. Her father farmed the family land around the farmhouse and school. As a young girl, Helen witnessed the beginning of World War II as the skies above their farm filled with trainer aircraft circling the Tiemann farm after the Army Air Corps built a runway less than a mile from their farmhouse – now Randolph Auxiliary Field. She had two older brothers, Rev. Dr. William Harold Tiemann who became a Presbyterian Minister and Dr. Kenneth Edward Tiemann, an accomplished pharmacist. By example, her parents instilled traditional hard-working principles and taught them love of God and love of neighbor.
A talented soprano, Helen grew up singing at every opportunity, serving God with her voice for decades at St. James Catholic Church in Seguin. While attending Texas Lutheran College, and singing professionally part-time, Helen sang at an event on Randolph Air Force Base, where she met and soon thereafter married her husband of forty-nine years, Maj. Maynard Kolb. They had three children and served a full Air Force career living in Kansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California before returning to Seguin. During that career, Helen and her children were blessed to spend quality time with her family at the Tiemann farm in Seguin while her husband was deployed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. After her husband’s retirement from the Air Force, the family returned home and Helen became actively involved in the Guadalupe County community.
Over the years, Helen proudly wore many hats – she had many hobbies and constantly volunteered her time to local organizations. To name a few, she was a realtor, law office assistant to her son - Judge Kevin Kolb, a Guadalupe County Master Gardner, a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, member of the Guadalupe County Republican Women, member of the Conservation Society, member of the Delphians Study Club, Daughter of the Republic of Texas, vocalist, and active volunteer in many roles at St. James Catholic Church. She will be most fondly remembered though for the things that brought her the most joy in life – being a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
As an amateur genealogist, she proudly kept great records of her family tree
Charles (Chuck) David Teal, 76 years, of McQueeney Texas, passed away at his home on September 16, 2024. He was born on November 14, 1947, in Wichita, TX to the late Claude Durwood and Janet Leah (Wasson) Teal.
He married the love of his life, Vickie Teal. He served and was a proud Vietnam Army Veteran. He loved being a nurse for over 31 years and made many lifelong friends throughout those years! He also loved to fish but he didn’t like to eat the fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Vickie Teal, one brother Barry Teal, and one sister Jo Currie.
and Texas-German heritage. She loved to share stories passed down through generations about the struggles and the early years of German settlers to our area. Her direct ancestors included some of the first settlers of both Seguin and New Braunfels, as well as important community leaders such as her greatgreat grandfather, Tobias Meiniger – an early Texan-German architect and entrepreneur who designed various Seguin landmark buildings, including the historic landmark Sebastapool, and co-owned a stagecoach company that transported settlers from the port of Indianolia to Seguin, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.
Helen was a devout Roman Catholic and served St. James Church in any way she could – she was the first person to deliver Holy Communion away from Mass to patients at Guadalupe Valley Hospital and loved doing so weekly for many years. She also was a vocalist and song leader and is remembered by many for her beautiful solos of songs like her rendition of Ave Maria, which she sang for many years at Christmas Midnight Mass.
Her family will most fondly remember her for the joy, love, care, and support she gave them throughout the years. Known as “Mimi” to her grandchildren, a day never went by without her showing them love in some way. She attended every major event in their lives with, as she loved to say, “bells on.” She made Christmases magical and tough times bearable for everyone she loved.
Survived by:
Daughter – and primary caregiver for the last twelve years, Margaret “Margie” H. Traeger and husband John A. “Drew” Traeger Jr., their two sons: John “Andrew” A. Traeger III, spouse Megan M. Traeger, and daughters Ryan Grace Traeger and Reagan Margaret Traeger; and Steven M. Traeger, spouse Kaitlyn V. Traeger, and daughter Adeline Marie Traeger, all of New Braunfels, TX.

CDC Report: OD Deaths Dropped In 2023 (Atlanta, GA) -- A new report says overdose deaths in the U.S. are the lowest they’ve been in three years. The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also says, however, that the number of overdose deaths is still higher now than they were prior to the pandemic. The CDC report says the number of deaths in the 12 months up to April 2024 was 101-thousand-168. That’s the lowest since the May 2021 report, which was 100-thousand-997 deaths. Experts say improved access to treatment programs and the overdose reversal drug Narcan have contributed to the decrease.
Cancer Deaths In U.S. Went Down By 33-Percent In 30 Years
(Undated) -- Cancer deaths in the U.S. have declined. That’s according to a report released by the American Association for Cancer Research, which found that the cancer death rate went down by 33-percent between 1991 and 2021. The cancer death rate for children and adolescents has also dropped by 24-percent in the past two decades. The report found the decline attributable to earlier detection, lower smoking rates and treatment improvements. But the authors warn that alcohol is still a lesser-known risk factor and excessive levels of consumption can increase the risk for certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and liver cancer.
Minnesota Measles Outbreak Raises Vaccine Concerns (Minneapolis, MN) -- Minnesota’s measles outbreak has reached 51 cases. Measles is primarily affecting unvaccinated children in the Somali community in Hennepin County. Health officials emphasize the risks of measles as twelve individuals have already been hospitalized. Vaccine hesitancy, fueled by misinformation, has contributed to declining vaccination rates. Experts stress the importance of vaccinations to prevent further outbreaks and highlight that parents can opt out of required vaccines, complicating public health efforts.
